"Despite its access via a long lane, this restaurant surrounded by stunning vineyards is clearly signposted. It occupies the ground floor of a small house which is glass-fronted throughout and boasts breathtaking views. The cuisine here bears the signature of chef Joachim Koerper and is based on Alentejo cooking with hints of international influence. We can highly recommend the local eggs, DOP-certified Malhadinha-reared merino lamb and the honey produced on the estate." - Michelin Inspector

Herdade da Malhadinha Nova, Alentejo, Portugal - Explore & Book

"We have to pinch ourselves as we rock up at Malhadinha Nova. The sheer size and absolute tranquility of this vast 450-hectare wine estate hidden away in the depths of untouched Alentejo is intoxicating. We spot storks nesting in trees, peacocks spreading their wings, and horses roaming free. A river snakes through a forested valley on one side, and neat vine terraces stretch as far as the eye can see. We hop in a jeep and whizz off along the dusty path into the wilderness – there’s something vaguely safari-like about the whole experience. Scattering the sprawling grounds are five plush houses, a winery, spa and a gourmet restaurant. Some of the houses are split into rooms and suites, others are rented as whole properties. You can hop between them by golf buggy, choosing to breakfast at one and lunch at another. Wine tasting is a must – reds, whites and rosés are created in the boutique on-site winery – and the dinners served in the glass-walled restaurant are unmissable (all perfectly paired with a home-produced wine, of course). The whole estate oozes exclusivity – chefs cook lunch in open kitchen-living rooms at each house, creating a sense of private dining, and you could quite easily wander the grounds and not see another soul for hours. You can just imagine the rich and famous hiding away from the world here (and I’m reliably informed they do!). Highs Great food, top wines, gorgeous rooms: what more could you want? Each house is beautifully styled and has its own unique character The estate's rugged landscape – rolling hills, forests, lakes, river - and roaming wildlife make it feel like a true wilderness The whole place has a really intimate, exclusive vibe You can learn how the Malhadinha wines are created and, if you like, join in with the annual grape harvest Lows The off-the-beaten-track location means there isn't a huge amount to see in the area, and the coast is over an hour away Access to and around the farm is tricky so be sure to remember your arrival instructions, and perhaps opt for a 4x4 if you're renting a car We found the service at reception a little slow The tennis court looked quite tired on our most recent visit" - Lucy Richardson

Herdade da Malhadinha Nova (Beja, Alentejo) 2 Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"At the heart of a sun-dappled swath of Portuguese farmland dotted with vineyards and olive groves, Herdade da Malhadinha Nova is a quiet paradise for wine enthusiasts. The luxury hotel occupies just a small portion of a vast 1,000-acre property, wedged between Lisbon and the Algarve in the beautiful and sparsely populated region of Baixo Alentejo. Guest rooms and suites are housed in a collection of villas generously spread out among the landscape, and while amenities vary greatly — some have fully equipped kitchens and private pools, others have fireplaces, grand pianos, and wide terraces — all are wonderfully elegant yet down-to-earth, taking inspiration from traditional Portuguese architecture with details like terracotta floors and high wood-beamed ceilings. Go for a dip in the picturesque blue-tiled infinity pool, pedal through the vineyards on a complimentary bicycle, tour the onsite state-of-the-art winery, and dine on regional MICHELIN Green Star cuisine in the hotel’s restaurant: nearly all of the ingredients, from free-range eggs to olive oil, are organic and produced on the estate." - Tablet Hotels

This is a really special five star hotel experience. Very personal, warm and relaxing. And finally a five star hotel with five star service without all the stupid formalism of other five star hotels! If you really want to wind down and truly relax this is the place. Thousands of birds, millions of flowers in spring and oak trees everywhere. Excellent wine and food also help. And fantastic breakfast next to your room. Rooms are also fantastic. And there is so much space everywhere!! There is also a lot to explore in the area close by (villages, city canyon with beautiful pools etc.) - and there are no crowds! This is the place where you can get rid off 99% of all other tourists and explore Portugal to yourself😀 We only booked two nights. I would recommend to book at least three nights…

If you’re reading this review: 99% of your work is done. You’ve discovered this absolute gem. Now the last 1% is booking your dream vacation. What an absolutely incredible experience. Great service, stunning landscapes, gorgeous rooms, delicious wine and foods. My soul is refreshed. Thank you to the entire team for an incredible stay. I read many reviews before booking stating that “2 days is not enough”. I’m one to get bored easily so I didn’t listen: and only booked 2 days thinking that it would be enough time. But my gosh - my biggest regret is not listening to these reviews and booking a longer stay. I absolutely cannot wait until I can return. Thank you to the entire team. You have created paradise.

This place is something truly special. Tucked away in the middle of nowhere, it offers beautiful suites with views over a stream and vineyards—and some even have private pools. It’s peaceful, relaxing, and just feels like a little slice of heaven.||The restaurant is Michelin-mentioned and absolutely worth a visit—great food and even better wines. The service is super personal and friendly, and the whole place is a perfect mix of working farm and luxury hotel.||And the breakfast? Just amazing.||If you're heading to the Alentejo region, this is definitely a place to consider. We loved every minute.

It is a beatitiful setting, the rooms were clean and the staff are friendly. The range of activities is good. What let's it down is the attention to detail. You feel like you're searching for a staff member to order a drink or be given a menu etc. It definitely felt understaffed, the resturant we ate in was nice but the food was pretty average. The beef Wellington was one wellington portion cut in half, there were no potatoes served with it. They also didn't know how to make a virgin mojito despite normal mojito being on the menu. The breakfast is very average for a hotel of this price. The facilities are OK it seems tired in parts. There is no indoor pool, the main pool in the house we stayed in was ice cold and the slightly warm weather pool which should have been a whirlpool or jacuzzi was broken but you could still use it and was more pleasant than the main pool. We had a relaxing stay but I don't think we will be back.

My two-day stay at Herdade da Malhadinha Nova (July 2025) started well, with impeccable service on the first day when the hotel seemed quieter. However, the second day, with the hotel apparently at full capacity, was a great disappointment and revealed a drastic drop in service quality. In the restaurant, the experience was chaotic. The staff were visibly lost, and the food arrived salty and cold. When we tried to complain to the chef and the team, we were met with an indifference that surprised me, especially in an establishment that prides itself on being a Relais & Châteaux. The disorganization persisted at breakfast, with the team again disoriented. It’s a shame to see a hotel with such refined taste and design be so undermined by the lack of professionalism and coordination of its staff. For a hotel that is part of the prestigious Relais & Châteaux association, which promises excellence in hospitality, the service I received on the second day was far below what was expected and required. Unfortunately, I will not return to this hotel and do not recommend it. The inconsistency in service and the lack of attention to complaints are unacceptable for a hotel of this category.

Google
I appreciate what they’re trying to do here. But it’s really not a 5 star hotel simply due to the service. Style, rooms, property, food - it’s good. But when service is inconsistent, it impacts the guest experience negatively. Situations that weren’t good for us: - arrived to breakfast first day with ZERO instruction. We were stuck for 30-40 mins with no instruction on how to order hot food or tea until we translated on our phone asking a staff member who wasn’t the one who is supposed be the English speaker - they were helping everyone but us which was frustrating. The one who was supposed to assist who knew English kept saying sorry until he disappeared into the kitchen and didn’t come out until after we finished our meal. (Breakfast on our second day was better because we knew what to do, we ordered immediately after sitting down not leaving it up to chance) - our room was by a common area pool - there were dirty dishes left there from the afternoon we arrived up until midday the next day. That should not be expected with full time staff on site. Overnight okay, but during the evening and morning when staff are around? - Booked activities and had to ask clarifying questions often about instructions or meeting point or transfers repeatedly - had a cooking workshop and they had a translator but he wasn’t actively translating and was using his phone. There were other people who dropped us off who could translate sufficiently but they left. So we didn’t really end up cooking, we actively translated using our phones. Food was great and people were nice but just wasn’t worth the price and either the hotel should’ve arranged properly or not offered this to us - last day, booked a massage in the morning. Picked a time so I’d have enough time to shower after the treatment and pack my remaining toiletries before checking out. Showed up a few minutes before my treatment and the spa door was locked (shouldn’t be) and waited standing outside until I texted the front desk. Who only then followed up with the therapist and asked me to come back some short time later due to some issue the therapist had. Trying to be accommodating but also when I highlighted the time issue, and asked for grace with the check out period so I can still shower and finish packing, they said they can give me a bit of time but that guests were coming after and I cant be too late. The fact other guests are coming is reasonable but just the whole approach to dealing with this situation was disappointing, inconsiderate to me - and my time being wasted. I couldn’t tell if I was to accommodate the team or the team was supposed to accommodate me.

We just returned from a 2-night stay at Herdade da Malhadinha Nova and absolutely loved every moment. It was a truly special experience from beginning to end. We stayed in the Suite Monte da Peceguina, a beautifully decorated two-story suite with two large beds—perfect for up to four guests. The design was cozy, with thoughtful materials, a warm fireplace, and attention to every little detail. Housekeeping came twice a day and always left a sweet treat, which was such a lovely touch. We had most of our meals—breakfast, lunch, and dinner—at the restaurant at the Monte, and everything we tried was excellent. On our last day, we had lunch at the main restaurant, which holds a Green Michelin Star, and the food there was absolutely incredible as well. Every single staff member we encountered was kind, warm, and genuinely committed to making our stay exceptional. We did a wine tasting and tour of the winery with Francisco, which was informative and enjoyable, and a quad bike tour of the estate with Eduarda, which was a highlight—so much fun! I highly recommend both activities. We truly wished we had stayed longer—two days didn’t feel like enough to soak in all that the estate has to offer. We’re already looking forward to going back. One of the most memorable things about this place is that it’s family-owned, and you can feel that personal touch everywhere—from the wine labels (each bottle features a drawing from one of the children in the family!) to the way the staff treats each other and their guests. It never felt like a commercial hotel—it felt like being welcomed into someone’s home. That’s incredibly rare, especially in luxury settings. We also loved the on-site shop, which sells their own wine, olive oil, honey, and other Portuguese products. I especially wanted to buy some of their delicious honey, but it had sold out. The front desk went out of their way to call the warehouse and made sure I had a jar before I left—such a kind and thoughtful gesture. Thank you to everyone at Malhadinha for the care, attention, and beautiful memories. We will definitely be back.

Google
Underwhelmed, overpriced for what it offers. We recently visited with our toddler and we werent lucky with the weather, there arent much activities to entertain a young child during bad weather, no indoor pool Also no indoor gym for adults Many of the staff seem quite incompetent, forgetting things and just a general look of dissatisfaction in their faces like they would rather be elsewhere. If you’re unlucky and someone orders just before you do at lunch you will be waiting for your food for an hour since its just one chef preparing in a small kitchen, not ideal for families. The shower and bath water takes forever to heat up and less than 5 mins later starts cooling down already Lots of things which are normally free in other hotels, such as a dental kit or flipflops can be used for a price Breakfast was good and the place is beautiful though

Yelp
The staff is very nice and helpful. Comfortable room with a beautiful bathroom. Heated tile. No room number, just cute whimsical pictures of butterfly, snail, and little creatures on wall to match with your key. The pictures are actually their wine labels and were drawn by the owner couple's children. The fireplace area is very inviting, great place to relax and enjoy the evening. Or to use your computer/phone as you don't get much wifi signal in the rooms (but it seems to be a common problem in the hotels I visit in Portugal.) The infinity pool has a nice view of the vineyard but it was too cool to swim in when I visited. Breakfast buffet is very delicious too, elegantly laid out with juices, fruit, an array of cheeses (some locally made), bread, home-made yogurt in glass jars, and more. The hotel is part of a farm, where they grow grapes, make their own wine, breed their pigs (pata negra) to feed on acorns, grow olives and make oil, plus more. The staff is happy to take you on a tour of the farm in their jeep, which was very interesting and a good learning experience. If you come at the right time, you can participate in the grape or olive harvest as well, and may get to stomp on some grapes! They do have some very good wine, and the olive oil is so flavorful I bought a bottle. Dinner at the restaurant is certainly delicious, from the bread with dip and spread, to the codfish and dessert. It's more modern fusion than rustic traditional. The location is somewhat in the middle of nowhere, but if you just want to chill and not do a lot, this is a great place to stay. More for couples than family with kids. It's a bit overpriced but I definitely plan to return for a special occasion, maybe my anniversary? Room Tip: There is no bad room, but they have two bigger rooms with a loft.

Yelp
Herdade da Malhadinha is a beautiful, calm, peaceful and serene property. We loved our three day stay at this boutique 10 room property. It was completely relaxing. The hotel is set in a large estate surrounded by grape vines, olive trees, and cork trees. The views are lovely and peaceful. Breakfast is served buffet style - a huge spread with produce from their farm (fruits, honey, olives, fresh jams) and local foods. Eggs are made to order. Just delicious! There are activities available on property for a fee (archery, horse back riding, etc). We did their complimentary wine tour which included a tour of the property and wine tasting. They are truly a family business - the wine bottle labels feature artwork from the owners' children. We also did archery with their activities guide, who is super friendly. We traveled as a couple and found it very relaxing. There were also families with children, but it was never noisy. It's a beautiful space. There is a beautiful infinity pool, but the water is way too cold even on warm sunny September days. They offer spa services (I had a massage - it did not meet expectations), but it's not up to par with the rest of the property and I don't recommend. The on-property restaurant is a delicious. They use in season and local ingredients. They exclusively serve their own wines and the olive oil is made with their own olives. The desserts are creative and delicious! We loved our stay and would totally recommend!
