Heroic Italian San Francisco

I'm a long time customer of this Heroic so this review is way overdue but I just had a really nice experience yesterday and thought it was time to share what I think of this little gem. The food is so good (sandwiches, the calabrian shrimp, the meatballs, and their gluten free pizza to name a few of my faves) but the customer service that you get from David (the owner of Heroic) makes it exceptional. I find that it's rare anymore in the restaurant industry to get the level of customer service you get from him. He is so kind and so accommodating. You can tell that he truly genuinely cares what your experience is. Customer experience like this makes repeat customer in itself. Doesn't hurt that his food is DELISH as well.

Five stars for Heroic Italian! The Polpette sandwich and spicy tomato soup combo is non-negotiable. The food was phenomenal—hot, fresh, and seriously flavorful. The soup has a creamy texture with a nice kick of spice, and the sandwich is packed with delicious meatballs, peppers, and sweet caramelized onions. It truly is a perfect lunch spot, and you can enjoy it all alongside their expert wine selection. Stop in for a great meal!

Came here for a late lunch. Beautiful people and incredible sandwiches. Didn’t plan to drink but they had a lovely red that paired too well with my sandwich.

Sandwiches: 5/5 Service: 5/5 Ambiance: 4/5 Overall: You will be saying OMG when you eat the OMG! The extended review... Sandwich: OMG - 5/5 - The flavor on this was awesome. The bread was nice and fresh and the meats with the spreads made for a nice flavor combination. The pricing on the menu could be a little bit high compared to other sandwich places I've been to but the flavor was undeniably awesome. Service: 5/5 - David, the owner, was super friendly and helpful in explaining all of the sandwich. His passion resonated when he was describing the menu. You could tell he was very proud of the quality he was providing. Ambiance: 4/5 - So there are a few tables outside to enjoy. The only issue is that it's hard to see that there is a sandwich shop sitting in the middle of a wine shop. There was some marketing outside on the sidewalk but I think it wasn't enough to take advantage of foot traffic.

As a local neighbor and business owner, Herioic Italian has become my go-to to grab a quick bite and for most of my client luncheons. My favorites are the cesar salad with chicken, and the OMG sandwich. Yesteray, Dave and his crew surpassed all my expectations by catering a client event with 28 lunch boxes- with 4 different sandwiches... my guests kept telling me they were wowed at the presentation and couldn't get over how flavorful the sandwiches were; from the bread (deelish!) to the meats, not to mention the generous portions. I told 40 people all about how special your menu and restuarant is. Thanks, Dave to you and your crew for the fabulous lunches and the over-the-top service! I'll be back for more!

Was hesitant to try the very well reviewed $17 OMG sandwich due to its exorbitant price. But it is aptly named, OMG I spent $17($21+with tip) on this sandwich. This is roughly six inches with very sparse amount of meat or ingredients listed on the menu. The bread is pretty good but not anything to rave about. This is half a sandwich not a full sandwich.

While I love a great sandwich, great sandwiches are far and few in-between. Heroic Italian is a place where you can find a great sandwich. I tried the signature "OMG" and it did not disappoint. The real hero of the sandwich is the bread. It's light, airy and crispy so you don't feel bloated with carbs. But the bread's real super-power is letting the flavors of the imported Italian meats and assorted toppings shine through. I had mine spicy which wasn't really hot but definitely added a touch of flavorful heat. I'll be going back to try their other sandwiches as well as another aptly named, "OMG."

It can be easy to walk by Heroic Italian and not realize it! There are no signs for the restaurant. Instead you will see a wine shop. Wine shop in the front, Heroic Italian kitchen in the back. When I entered, the man at the cashier explained that I could take a seat at any table outside, scan the QR code and order directly on my phone. The QR code links to the specific table you're at so they know who to bring the food to. I ordered the OMG spicy, no lettuce, add burrata. This sandwich was beyond delicious, literally the most perfect sandwich. I should have kept the lettuce on there since it prob would have balanced out the saltiness of the meats, but that's my fault! The roasted tomatoes were my favorite part!! They were so incredibly flavorful! My mouth is drooling just thinking about them! I can't wait to come back to SF to try their other sandwiches!

LOOK PHOTO BELOW AND READ... The customer service is certainly lacking as well. I received this response from the owner. It's so weird lmao The owner definitely seems confident about his business and does not pay attention to the negatives. The real issue here, business owner not listening or being adequately. No matter when you bake your breads or where your sausages are imported from, it's about the taste and quality of the final product. ((Maybe you imported cheapest sausages, try lil more expensive ones)). If you got that kind reviews, be kind, listen your customers and improve or double check your products. Think about that, Mr. Business Owner:) UPDATE: Please, start with customer service. Read/learn what is that and how to reply to reviews like mine! Haha, what's important is that they don't lie and pretend with good quality. They are what they are. You buy cheapest sausages and using old/dried breads lol

Oh hey, I know Heroic Italian from my recent visit to their Downtown Berkeley location where I indulged in a tasty burrata pinsa (review: https://bit.ly/3qfi8M2). This currently mini-chain was started by Boston-born brothers Jeffrey Mertihue and David Bullitt down in Santa Monica where they became popular for their Italian sandwiches. I was happy to find out they opened a spot on Castro but was surprised it was a pop-up in front of Swirl, the wine shop close to 18th Street. They built out four dining booths at the curb and set up tables on the sidewalk. Each space has its own QR code that allows you to review the menu and make your order. Human interaction was at a minimum. But you won't hear me complaining...or young mothers with toddlers in baby strollers. The process made it efficient without having to wait for a server's attention. I ordered in two parts starting with the $18 Chicken Caesar Salad with a generous amount of shredded rotisserie chicken nestled with romaine and crostini croutons (photo: https://bit.ly/3oIrGio). It was mixed with parmesan, anchovies, Dijon mustard and garlic, and the result was tasty even if the dressing was on the excessive side. The second part of my lunch was the $10 Crostini and Burrata where they served toasted wedges of Montesacro bread with a big helping of creamy Balsamic-drizzled burrata (photo: https://bit.ly/42hZVuQ). This could become a Castro habit. AMAZING sandwiches!! We ordered the OMG and Quadronno, and they are both some of the best sandwiches we've had in the Bay Area. These reminded me of the sandwiches I have had in Florence and Rome. While the sandwich was so delicious that I wish it was bigger, the bread to meat ratio was perfect. The flavor was great without being salty or greasy, and it didn't feel too heavy. We can't wait to go back! P.S. I ordered online and went inside Swirl for pickup at the back counter.

Quality meats, breads, and accompaniments. The OMG & Quadronno are some of the best sandwiches in the city. Plus the folks at Swirl are also great at recommending new wines to complement your order.

Food is good; however, the Toast app for ordering is totally dysfunctional! Finally had to give up and won't return to this restaurant until they figure out how to fix their order process!

Had to stop by and try this cute restaurant inside of Swirl wine bar. The food was bomb af & paired perfectly with the wine. They go above and beyond by making their pesto & other dishes from scratch. I highly recommend visiting, and supporting this local Castro business. | IG: Smackinfood

Is this a case of the tail wagging the dog? Swirl on Castro has invited Heroic Italian into their wine shop, ostensibly a bid to allow one to eat while consuming the alcohol Swirl serves up. But this works both ways: Heroic Italian brought me in. A glass of wine and a Pliny the Elder (a steal at $6) from Swirl were the nice afterthought. However you cut it, this is a win-win proposition for both the businesses and the consumer. If I weren't sitting in a Covid-era al fresco structure on Castro with '80's pop songs being piped in the experience could almost have me believing I was in Rome. Heroic Italian doesn't have an extensive menu (almost exclusively sandwiches and salads) but what they do have will practically have you crooning an aria. Good stuff that had me recalling my last visit to Italy. Two of us shared the Gladiator Salad ($16) which is a salad for lovers of cured meat. Featuring Italian Prosciutto, Spicy Salami, Copocollo, Porchetta, Mortadella and more, this is not the sort of salad I'd choose for myself but as a shared offering it was perfect. A shared Quadronno Sandwich ($16) though? I'm not even a sandwich lover but, arriving at the table oozing melted Burrata, this thing was a dream. Orders are placed here via a QR code and I'd checked "spicy" but not paid more for "extra spicy" and neither should you. One bite in particular left my eyes watering and it took a while for that to settle down. I'd still get it spicy - not extra spicy - but I'd approach the sandwich with more caution. Any way you approach it though, this was a marvelous sandwich. Both the salad and the sandwich featured bread from Montesacro Pinseria, also in SF and about which I can only say "best bread ever". Though it was clear the fillings were top notch it was the fantastic light, chewy, and crunchy bread that elevated it above what it would otherwise have been. You can, of course, order a soda from Heroic Italian but you're here at Swirl so you may as well go big. Perhaps a bottle of Italian wine should be added. In our case, it was a glass of wine from Switzerland ($11) of all places, and a nice big bottle of icy cold Pliny the Elder IPA, bargain priced at $6. A little taste of Rome on Castro Street; I didn't know it was needed but it was. It most certainly was.

The sandwiches were decent (two of us got the OMG) and one got the Marinetti. The Marinetti came out much later than the two OMGs (~10 min). The service was pretty terrible, they didn't even clean the dirty wine glass that was left on our table from the previous person, nor give us cups of tap water to drink. We still paid 20% tip (as the app required payment before any services were rendered), but DEFINITELY NOT WORTH THE PRICE!

Another excellent experience with this restaurant!!! I was in SF and really wanted a good sandwich. I didn't want to drive all the way to Berkeley remembering how delicious Heroic was the first time I went. I'm so glad they had a sister restaurant only 3 miles away from where I was. Since everyone raves about the OMG! I had to try it, and the name totally fits this sandwich. First off again the bread Is amazing! It's crunchy on the outside and soft and chewy on the inside and very light not leaving you feeling heavy after eating the whole sandwich. The meats were divine. Sliced paper thin and literally melts in your mouth. All the condiments in this sandwich made it amazing in flavor and that truffle aoli was to kill for. If I ever eat a sandwich with meat it won't be anywhere else!!!! Had to grab another box of the delicious marinated olives and one of their Italian sodas.

Honestly this was such a meh sandwich to me. Def fresh ingredients, good roll, and good service, but the actual sandwich just wasn't that good. I got the mozzarella, roasted tomato, avocado with added chicken. For my boyfriend, i got the OMG. We split them. Getting the spicy sauce on the side may have been a mistake. I kinda forgot about it for my first half (the chicken mozz) but my second half, the OMG, I added it and it made the flavor really pop. Def recommend the spicy sauce! Either way, both sandwiches were pretty disappointing, and way way overpriced. $43 for both, and they aren't large sandwiches. I'm 120 pounds and i easily finished a full sandwich in one sitting, even though I usually save half of a deli sandwich for later. For comparison, these things have to be 1/4 the size of Palm City sandwiches, which are actually slightly cheaper by a dollar or so. Probably won't be back. Will try Rossi or Hot Johnny's next time!

I'm always on the prowl for a good sandwich. Like when ppl ask the age old question, which carb would you choose to only eat for the rest of your life, I'd choose bread over rice or noods. When ppl say they're cutting carbs out of their diet to lose weight, I could never. I ordered the chicken tetrazzini sandwich for one reason- green peas. I love them. I was of course disappointed to see that my sandwich barely had any green peas or mushrooms. I made it thru 90% of it before even seeing a speck of green. I thought maybe the other half would have more. Nope. Yet my two friends who got the same sandwich had theirs stuffed with them! I was extremely envious as I watched them devour their sandwiches, while constantly looking down at my own sadwich (not a typo). For a place that charges $17+ for a sandwich, they should have better quality control. Maybe they made mine last and were running low on ingredients? It's not an acceptable excuse tho. And for a sandwich at this price, I honestly expected it to be larger/more filling. Deliboard is about the same price point and I can barley eat half of it in one go. The chicken itself was nothing to rave about, and was kinda dry tbh. Perhaps the worst offense is that they fucked up the bread. The top part of my bread was over toasted and had the texture of chips instead of soft bread. Each time I took a bite, it was so crispy that there were crumbs/flakes flying everywhere. I'm honestly really upset whenever I have a meal that I feel was a waste of calories. They had a leg up already since I was starving after a workout class nearby, and it just didn't hit the spot.

One of the best sandwiches I've ever had. The price for these sandwiches are pretty expensive however it is well worth it. Fresh bread, top of the line ingredients, can't beat it.

There was covered outdoor seating which was very fun to sit at in the rain. The service was brief but not unfriendly. The store has a wide variety of wine to choose from. The food was quite tasty and fresh but definitely expensive for what is on the plate. The kitchen was very clean which was nice to see.

One of our favorite sandwich places in SF, but they are more than a sandwich place. We first tried Heroic Italian on one of the YES events and we have been coming back time and time again. My favorite is the Quadronno, but we really like all the sandwiches, salads, etc. Fresh ingredients, tasty, and the bread--really delicious. What's great is that they have salads too for those of us that want to eat less carbs. And if you like wine, they share a space inside Swirl so you can enjoy wine with your food. Outside seating available by sidewalk or in a parklet.

O.m.G that sandwich still has my heart. It's bold and a great portion. The quality of everything from the bread to the meat is amazing. Also the ceaser salad was wonderful. I love a piece of anchovies so it was right up my alley

My biggest pet peeve is biting into a sandwich and the crunchiness of the bread is so hard that it cuts the roof of my mouth. Nothing worst than trying to finish and enjoy a sandwich when the top of your mouth is all raw. I'm a huge fan of sandwiches and while good quality meat is usually the star, I think the bread is just as important. Hence, I can be super picky about my bread but I'm happy to report that Heroic Italian's bread is hands down, a great compliment and may actually be the star of their sandwiches! Made fresh daily by a local bakery just for them, their bread is one solid component that should not be overlooked. Just the perfect amount of crunch on the outside to hold up the sandwich, yet soft and chewy on the inside to protect your mouth. Having artisan bread like that warrants the price. Upon arriving, I was greeted by the owner, David. Super cool guy, we chatted for a bit while I was waiting for my sandwich and learned that his brother runs their original location down in Santa Monica. David wanted to share a piece of their childhood and the sandwiches him and his brother grew up eating with us in SF. Thank you for spoiling us! It was hard choosing between the OMG and the chicken tetrazzini sandwiches but ultimately, the mayo w/ black truffle infusion in the OMG won me over. Unfortunately, I did not get a chance to check out the back patio many others have mentioned, I had to take my sandwich to go but I couldn't drive off without taking a bite into that sandwich first. Layered w/ the right amount of meat where I was able to bite into it w/o struggling to fit it into my mouth, the meat to bread ratio was on point. OMG, that's one sandwich worth talking about! I saved the other half to share with the Mr. and he was impressed by the different meats in the sandwich. He worked at an Italian market growing up so he's super particular about his sandwiches. Often times, he'll just walk into a market, pick his own meats, grab a roll and some cheese and make his own sandwiches but when he got nothing to say and keeps munching away at it, you know he approves of it too! Get the OMG, you will not be disappointed!

Heroic Italian is located inside the Swirl Wine shop, and is a bit difficult to find (thankfully we have the help of google maps to pin down its location!) The interior is compact, but they have plenty of space for their outdoor seating options. I went around 2pm and got the OMG Sandwich, which has italian deli meats. There weren't many other patrons during this time, and I got my sandwich in the span of a few minutes. The bread's texture is like the crust/bottom of a pizza, but was a bit too tough to bite into. They ask if you want the spice in the sandwich or on the side, and even though I'm a wimp when it comes to spice, I asked for it to be left in the sandwich. The dried peppers really weren't terribly spicy- the spice adds a lot of depth to the sandwich and is a nice kick of heat.

How could any Italophile not give Heroic Italian a try​? I couldn't pass it up when I heard about their ​OMG sando! It's made up of meats imported from Italy and bread from Montesacro. Yes, THAT Montesacro, the authentic pinseria in SF that uses ingredients from Rome. All those ingredients​ equated to a solid sando that didn't disappoint. The OMG is made up of quality meats. I purposely took a few bites of the salame, capocollo and​ prosciutto​ separately, and they were all super fresh. Yep, just as good as you'll find in Italy. I was especially excited about the bread they use from Montesacro​ Pinseria, since it's high on my list for pinsa. I'm crazy in love with pinsa, but unfortunately, it's a rare find in the Bay Area. The bread, which was still warm, is outstanding and I easily could enjoy it plain. It definitely had a nice crunch, but along with a bit of a "scratch the roof of your mouth" kind of texture. About 20 minutes later though, it was just perfect. Normally, sandwiches get soggy over time, but this softened up really nicely. This was one of the few sandos I've ever had that held up very well over time​! At $16.00, the OMG isn't particularly​ a large sando, but without a doubt, is a quality one. It's also the price of admission in San Francisco these days, it seems. Buon Appetito! TIP: Pick up a nice bottle of vino to pair with your sando inside at Swirl, where Heroic Italian is located.

Brand spanking new (pop up?) in the back of a wine store, owned by 2 brothers who are also running the show. Article here in Eater Sf about them: https://sf.eater.com/2020/12/10/22167891/heroic-deli-sandwiches-castro It was day 1 of the official opening and they definitely under estimated (or were caught a bit surprised by) the demand the Eater SF article the night before caused. Anyway - a VERY nice friend masked up and picked me up at the airport around lunchtime and we were going to go grab to-go lunch in SF before she dropped me off at my apartment. I debated Deli Board, but I had just read this article - so we ordered 2 sandwiches online (pretty pricey - with tip $40) They were set to be ready in 35 mins. I ordered the first one listed (OMG I think it is called) It is basically a mixed meat italian hero with giardiniera (which was the best part of the sandwich and super- duper tasty - they should sell it by the jar!). I loved everything about it (the proportions, the layering of the meats, the quality ingredients - with the slight exception of the bread, which was for me a little dry. I would love to try the other sandwiches and salads, but I imagine this place is going to be popular, and I don't love waiting. We got there 5 mins AFTER our pick up time and still had to wait about another 40 mins. BUT we were the lucky ones - there were about 6 people standing around waiting for sandwiches that they ended up getting "make-goods" for. They ran out of rolls for the lunch rush. Again this is likely due to 1st day jitters and under-estimations. In the time of COVID, it takes brave people to open any kind of food establishment - I wish them much luck and prosperity!

Best sandwich in SF! Super fresh and delicious with unique wines at Swirl. A hidden local gem!

Haven't been blown by a sandwich in the Bay Area until now...and wow that OMG sandwich is absolutely incredible. I stopped by on a Friday afternoon and was greeted by the owner, who was extremely kind and friendly. I ordered the OMG and had the sandwich in my hands within 10 minutes. Everything about that sandwich was perfect. The bread was crunchy but not to the point where your teeth get tired of chewing. The house-made sauce was tangy and slightly spicy. The combination of meats went together so well...I'm literally still thinking about how good it was. Can't wait to return and introduce my friends to this place!

The OMG is delicious. I consider myself a sandwich connoisseur, and the OMG is one of the best sandwiches I've ever had. The OMG is the perfect balance of meat-to-bread ratio and a myriad of flavors that will leave you very satisfied. I felt contentment after eating this sandwich. I know it's a weird thing to say, but I was very happy after my meal and didn't feel like I wasted my money.

I'm currently on the lookout for my new favorite sandwich place in this city, so I went here around 1:40pm on today (Tuesday). Heroic Italian is located inside a place called Swirl and there's outdoor dining available too. They have a huge selection of wine if you're interested in that. The menu is outside on the front door (I didn't notice the menu at first, but the server David B. was very nice and walked me to the menu. I ordered the OMG sandwich. First bite into my OMG sandwich and I was like "wow!..." At first, I didn't think my sandwich would be that flavorful since it didn't look like it had a lot of meat inside, but it actually works because these meats are not the cheap kind. Their menu is outside at the front door. The OMG sandwich contains Italian prosciutto, spicy salami, capocollo, mortadella, porchetta, smoked mozzarella, roasted artichokes, and tomatoes, lettuce, house-made giardiniera, mustard, mayo, with an Italian black truffle infusion. I don't know about you, but most of those ingredients sound fancy to me! I'd recommend this place! Heroic Italian might be my new favorite sandwich place. I love sandwiches where the bread is crispy on the outside, but soft on the inside so that is a HUGE plus for me!

Swirl wine bar and in-house pop up restaurant Heroic Italian, is so good, I don't want to tell you about it. But I do because I want them to be around for a long time. We come for wines by the glass at the tables in the sun out front, and order delicious, flavor-filled savory food from Heroic Italian to accompany the wine. Seriously enjoyable environment, customer service and quality food and drink. Nice jazzy but current music playing. Tables and parklet booths in the sun and shade. And you're spending at local businesses, not big corporate joints (no offense to them but it's nice to support small, local folks doing a great job). Love love love these two businesses.

I originally discovered Heroic Italian via their location in Santa Monica last year, but had not been able to secure a reservation. I was excited to see the name pop up on Yelp as they were promoting. Wow! I ordered the OMG ( which should add the 6th letter of the alphabet to make it a 4-letter sandwich) as well as the spicy Marinetti with Prosciutto. The OMG? Italian Prosciutto, Spicy Salami, Capocollo, Mortadella, Porchetta, Smoked Mozzarella, Roasted Artichokes and Tomatoes, Lettuce, House-made Giardiniera, French's Mustard, Mayo with Italian Black Truffle Infusion. The Marinetti? Fresh Imported Bufala Mozzarella, Avocado, Roasted Tomatoes, Basil and Garlic Pesto, Aged Balsamic Glaze. ( I ordered this Spicy and with Proscuitto). Quadronno? Prosciutto, Burrata, Roasted Tomatoes and Mayo with Italian Black Truffle Infusion. All were equally yummy. Showed up at 12pm on a Friday and met David the owner. Sandwiches were made while I perused the wines at Swirl. David was extremely helpful when the ToastTab app didnt seem to work and he gave me a little more history of why he set the store up inside a wine bar. I went off with my friend to have lunch and I couldn't get enough that we went back the next day! The OMG was the star of the lunch, but I actually think I like the Marinetti more. The second time I got the Quadronno and the OMG again this time with the Burrata. I swear I am going to blow my budget (and diet ) apart until I try everything on the menu including the salads. Brought it home and just savored every bite. While great with the Burrata, I think I prefer the OMG straight. Each sandwich can be ordered spicy if you prefer. In my opinion it is not that spicy. The bread is the understated star in my opinion. It really holds up well and the sandwiches are constructed such that the flavor enhances the bread without making it too soggy. I like the fact that the sandwiches are not overstuffed (all due respect to my beloved Primanti Brothers in Pittsburgh) that you can get your mouth around it and taste every ingredient including their amazing prosciutto. If there is some way to define a sandwich that is " just right", this is it. David opened the restaurant during Covid quickly in this alternative location. I do hope that he is able to expand and open a full restaurant up here like the one in Santa Monica with pastas and a relaxed dine in location where you can enjoy a nice glass of wine. I will definitely be back and already have returned. I don't normally give 5 stars for take out, but it has been a long time since I found a place where I'd eat anything on the menu! Came back one more time this week for the Genoa!!

I participated in my first ever Yelp Elite event at Swirl/Heroic Italian and I'm glad I did so. I don't come to the Castro often, in fact, I don't even live in San Francisco anymore. However, the sandwich I had was so damn good, I will definitely be heading back again. I got the OMG sandwich and that's a perfect name for it because oh my goodness was it delicious! The sandwich was loaded with quality meats and toppings and the bread - oh my goodness the bread is light airy and just the best bread I've had in a long time. Aside from the delicious sandwich, the customer service was exceptional. The person who helped me went into great detail explaining each sandwich, giving his personal opinion of his favorite and was just so nice and welcoming. In summary, the sandwiches are the bomb here and the staff are awesome - I'm so happy I went to this event!

Really enjoyed the food. Spoke to both the owner of Heroic Italian and the gentleman selling wine/spirts inside and they were super cool. And OMG that sandwich! It was the perfect assortment of pork cold cuts and sun dried tomatoes. I also purchased the caprese salad A: to support the business and B: because it looked so good on the menu. We really enjoyed it, super favorable, so much so, we didn't even need the olive oil dressing it comes with. Next time I'm in the Castro, I'll definitely make it a point to swing by. And I'll make sure to walk up the Castro St. hill because I'm going big again!

Located in the Castro, this spot has some bombbb Italian sandwiches! The particular one I got had prosciutto, roasted tomatoes, and burrata oh yessss. And the bread is great - nice crunch but not too hard. I could eat this every day for real!

I'm not sure about this place while the food looked delicious, I did not enjoy the dressing on the salad and I ended up not finishing it. Additionally the service was very poor, they were slow, and didn't bring any water or utensils for the salad. Furthermore, they only had outdoor seating but it was raining and the seats were all wet. Another major complaint is the online ordering/paying system. I had to select the tip before I was able to experience the food or service which felt scammy to me.

Thank you yelp for the food! This place is located inside swirl. The owner is super nice and friendly. Ordering can be done easily online and picked up. I tried their OMG sandwich and the genoa warm sandwich. Both exceeded my expectations! Let me preface by saying that I'm not normally a fan of sandwiches in general. Most of them don't hit the spot for me. These both did! The OMG is a very savory sandwich. Perfect for those who love your fancy deli meats and charcuteries. It is a tad bit too salty but a perfect combination with the baguette they use. This one would be amazing with wine (which you can pick up at swirl while you're there!). I also wasn't able to taste the truffle but I got it spicy and I enjoyed the kick (wasn't too spicy at all). The genoa shined with the pesto sauce. The shredded chicken wasn't dry at all and worked well with the sauce. I loved the tomatoes in there, it really brought out an extra layer of flavor with the tang & the mozzarella cheese was thick slices. Overall would really recommend picking up one of their sandwiches. They also have vegetarian and vegan options!

Delicious sandwich spot in the Castro! We tried the OMG and the Quadronno - although both were really good, I loved the simplicity of the quadronno. The bread was perfectly warm and crunchy on the outside but still a bit chewy on the inside. We got both sandwiches spicy which is a Calabrian chili, garlic and olive oil blend - would def recommend and it didn't add too much spice or overpower the other flavors of the sandwich. I think the price is a bit high to become a regular habit, but the ingredients were very high quality and service was very friendly - would def stop by as a treat for a high quality lunch when we're in the area!

OMG you had me at bread. Flavorful sammy wrapped in delicious carbs. I didn't have time to stay and eat, and after a long ride home, the sandwich was still bomb! Not the biggest of sandwiches, yet will leave you satisfied fo sho!

Came here for the yelp elite sandwich and was able to meet the owner who was very nice ordered their best selling OMG sandwich and it did not disappoint. Bread was light and fluffy, filling was a good amount and wasn't greasy.

Want a sandwich that will blow your damn mind?! Well it's here damnit! Holy delicious Batman! My friend and I got one of the Italian inspired hoagies and one of the roasted chicken with pesto and fresh mozz - we went dutch, split them and just let our tastebuds go on a ride. The bread is also on point. I'm so sad I don't live in SF to be able to make this a regular occurrence. Yummmmmmy!

Friendly staff and great sandwiches, what else could you ask for! First thing to note, Heroic Italian was a little hard to find. The storefront actually says Swirl because these two places share a joint space. The only way I was able to find this place was because there was a standing outdoors sign letting you know that Heroic Italian is inside, so be sure to watch for this! I got the OMG sandwich and it was delicious! They put in 32 different ingredients, and with each bite you get a blast of a different flavor. Sometimes theres salami, sometimes theres prosciutto, sometimes I can't even tell what it is I'm eating! Always a fun surprise that keeps you guessing. David was also really nice, he came out and talked to me for a bit as they were preparing my food. This is first restaurant, inspired from his brother who opened a restaurant in LA!

This is a great new sandwich spot out of Swirl! I ordered the Quadronno, which is prosciutto and burrata. The bread was good and crunchy, the ingredients tasted high quality, and overall it was a tasty sub! I hoped that it'd be a little more loaded up for the price, but at the end of the day, if I were at Swirl buying wine, I'd definitely grab a sandwich too!

I've lived and worked in San Francisco for over seven years and I've eaten a lot of sandwiches and lunches. The OMG sandwich is a perfect sandwich. 10/10. You can scan their menu if you have two phones off the QR code that's in the first menu picture. And you can order ahead of time. Big plus!

Super lowkey sandwich shop located inside Swirl, a wine store. The chicken tetrazzini sandwich is bomb. Eat it right away when its fresh and warm. The bread has great texture, is perfectly lightly toasted, and not soggy at all. The chicken is juicy and I could tell that it was high quality rotisserie chicken. Wine store looks has an extensive selection that you can browse while waiting for your sandwich.

Kudos for them opening during these challenging times. The OMG lived up to its name with the amazing bread & authentic Italian meats. The light crunch from the toasted roll gives way to a soft but not doughy interior, which holds the dressing and mustard nicely without being soggy. The various meats in the sandwich work well together contributing to the overall taste. It all works together beautifully. Definitely order the spicy sauce as the kick from the chilies adds a great depth of mouth feel and taste. We don't live in the city anymore but will definitely be back. Oh, and the wine shop (Swirl) has an amazing selection of Japanese Whiskies. Next time I'm in the city I think I'll pick some up too.

OMG the sandwiches. They are incredible. I order from here pretty often and I think it's a best kept secret in the neighborhood. They are kind of expensive (almost $20 a piece) but sooo worth it! Could easily be shared by 2 people. Located inside of Swirl Wine bar in Castro, not it's own stand alone shop. Pro tip - order to go online ahead of time (the staff at the wine bar can't ( won't?) take your order so they will direct you to their website/toast tab site anyway). If you dine in person there's QR codes on their sidewalk seating. Always ready within 5-10 minutes. RUN, don't walk and get a sandwich! They do have other foods - I think flat bread pizzas and salads (which I haven't tried) but if they are anything like the sandwiches they will be worth it!

What a wonderful discovery, right with Swirl on Castro. Clever menu, snacks and filing choices and did I mention the bruschetta ? Fast service , good prices Enjoy!

Ordered the OMG. The good: Quality meats and the bread is SO good......like, seriously delicious. I always say a sandwich is only as good as the bread it's on, and this definitely measured up. The bad: Pretty much everything else on the sandwich. First off, a major pet peeve of mine is false advertising. In this case, it plainly stated on the menu that roasted artichoke hearts were going to be on the sandwich. I looked. Nothing. When I brought it to the staff's attention, they said that it was "in the mayo", however, on the menu it said that the mayo was black truffle. There is a big difference between actual artichoke hearts and mayo flecked with bits of artichoke heart. One is a spread and the other actually serves to break up the richness of the meat. In fact, the only actual roughage present on the sandwich was shredded lettuce (I ordered it without tomato)......another thing that was not listed on the menu that was on the sandwich. That brings me to my next point.....the giardeneira. Where was it? I tasted no vibrancy from any sort of pickled veggies. No acid, no vinegar. Also, and this is probably the biggest problem I had, was the fact that there were olives on the sandwich! I HATE olives in my food and there was no mention on the menu of them being on there. Maybe they put it in the giardeneria? I hate them because they completely overwhelm all other flavors for me and this sandwich was no exception. I ate it over 2 hours ago and I can STILL taste them. I was excited for the truffle mayo, however the flavor of the olives completely overroad any truffle flavor that was there. Also, the price point. At $17 for an italian sub, it better be the best I've ever had, and, unfortunately, it was not. I may go back and try something else simply because I loved the bread, but I am not itching to necessarily.

Love coming here for a quick bite to eat! It's on the way from my apartment to Dolo so it's my go-to picnic food. I typically order online for pickup and they always do a great job of having my order ready super quickly. FOOD - OMG (5/5) - This one is my default order every time and it's so good it makes it hard for me to branch out and try the others. They're very generous with the cured meats inside, but it's still well balanced with the bread and other ingredients. I always order it with the "spicy" modifier (if you get it on the side it's $.50 but free if it's in the sandwich), which is basically this pickled pepper mixture that adds a nice acidity and heat to cut through the saltiness of the meats. The sandwich is on the saltier side given the nature of the ingredients so would definitely recommend having a bit of water (or a glass of wine ) to wash it down. - Genoa (3/5) - Had really high hopes for this one but it was just ok. The shredded chicken was a bit dry and unseasoned, and the pesto was overly oily and drenched into the bread. Each bite felt bland but also too oily, so probably wouldn't order again. OVERALL It's 5 stars just for the OMG, but at $17 it's definitely more of a treat yourself sandwich than something I can consistently get for lunch.

Okay. Came here for the first day, opening. Major crash, they were overwhelmed. Popularity is a bitch. Still, eventually got a delicious sandwich and the chopped salad was beyond expectations. Tonight we were close by, starving and indecisive about what we wanted. Salad? Yes. Something different? Okay. Something between a nosh and a full meal? Yep. Ordered the farro salad with chicken. Excellent, feeds 2 with extras. Cant beat it.... the charcuterie board?! The owner asked if we had dined there before. He mentioned he just added the antipasto to the menu, "please let me know what you think." My wife was blown away. She expected boring whatever; we got an amazing assortment that was beyond quality good. It's a perfect and easy plate for a picnic, plus the guys at Swirl can find you a great wine to accompany your meats and cheeses.

Best sandwiches and so happy they are in our new neighborhood! the bread is the star but also everything inside as well! we love the prosciutto burrata sandwich and the vegetarian one the best.

I love a good sandwich and literally OMG was amazing. Deliciously made with fresh local ingredients. Got the famous OMG spicy witch had the following. Italian Prosciutto, Spicy Salami, Capocollo, Mortadella, Porchetta, Smoked Mozzarella, Roasted Artichokes and Tomatoes, Lettuce, House-made Giardiniera, French's Mustard, Mayo with Italian Black Truffle Infusion. I love simple items made correctly and man that cookie was delicious. Crispy edges and soft but chewy center. Felt like eating my grandmother's batch when I was a child. Must try and make sure you place your order early!

Such a great local spot with many tasty sandwiches. I've been here a few times and have tried the Mount Etna Salad, Antipasto Cheese Board, and the Vegan Sandwich. Although they don't have a a lot of vegetarian/vegan options, all of the options that they do have are so good. I would definitely recommend the Vegan Sandwich (even for meat eaters). It's super flavorful and comes on the perfect sandwich bread. Get the spicy sauce on the side so you can dip your sandwich in it...or just slather it all over! Also, the restaurant is inside of Swirl wine shop so you can grab a bottle for a picnic or drink wine outside at their tables while you enjoy your food.

The OMG definitely lives up to its name! It may sound like a lot of ingredients in one sandwich but everything works so well together. Each bite is full of flavor and I really enjoyed the roasted tomatoes & artichokes and the pickled veggies. They complimented the sandwich perfectly. The truffle mayo was delicious too. But can we talk about the bread for a minute? The bread was like a really good, properly done pizza dough. It had just the right amount of chew and held up well despite all the stuff in it. The sandwiches are smaller than other sandwich places but it was enough to satisfy me without leaving me overly stuffed. Thank you David for sharing your passion with us because it really shows!
