"A meal by Gert De Mangeleer and sommelier Joachim Bouden is in a class of its own, starting with the swish Botanic Sanctuary Hotel, which immerses you in a world unlike any other. Concrete and muted shades of grey set the scene in the intimate restaurant which boasts a stunning architectural backdrop. In a bid to maintain the element of surprise, the establishment asks guests not to post photos on social media, so we won’t dwell on the amazing chef’s table where diners are invited to admire his work first hand either. Suffice it to say that chef De Mangeleer’s distinctive signature and love affair with Asia can be tasted every time. The menu pays tribute to his motto: “Simplicity isn’t simple”, which says it all! Razor-sharp precision and boundless creativity remain the inimitable hallmark of this chef, who painstakingly pairs daring combinations of ingredients. For example, he may cook Anjou pigeon in hay and herbs before adding the finishing touch tableside on a binchotan BBQ, all of which is then flanked with side dishes like melted foie gras, red beetroot, wild strawberries and a knockout pigeon gravy with fermented garlic. The chef’s talent shines through in his flair for culinary sophistication and unorthodox ideas that enhance the taste and flavour of each ingredient, as he reinvents textbook techniques and jazzes up pedigree recipes. You are in for a truly unforgettable experience." - Michelin Inspector

What Makes a Restaurant Romantic? 14 Restaurants Weigh In

"A restaurant is made romantic by several things together. First of all, the overall atmosphere: the setting (preferably not too far apart), the lighting and the right music. On the other hand, the service also has an important function in sensing what attention a couple wants or does not want." - Jillian Dara

Last Dinners: Why Are These Top Restaurants Around The World Closing Down?

"Three-Michelin-starred modern Belgium restaurant Hertog Jan in Belgium will close on 22 December 2018 after 13 years. The dynamic duo, chef Gert De Mangeleer and sommelier Joachim Boudens, shook the Belgian culinary circles when they made the shock announcement last December—and in the wee hours of the morning. In a statement, they said: “Our biggest dream has always been to stop with Hertog Jan at the pinnacle of our career.”" - Kenneth Goh

What an experience! We had high expectations when we started our evening at Hertog Jan but after 14 courses we were flabbergasted by the creativity and taste of every dish. This mixed with a highly skilled, motivated and friendly staff and we had the best cocktail to enjoy our night fully. We even got an additional dish to take home and enjoy the experience further the day after. Thanks to the amazing staff for the wonderful dinner!

This was an excellent experience. The food amazing, bold flavors expertly combined, quite some memorable dishes like the unsalted caviar, the mushroom ‘stew’, the white asparagus. Great wine selection and great service.

We had a wonderful experience during our lunch at Hertog Jan. This was our first visit to a 3 star restaurant after we ate at several 1 and 2 star restaurants and it totally lived up to our expectations. The plates look amazing and taste even better. The service is spot on and the attention to detail is incredible.

We made a reservation for two to celebrate a birthday on a Saturday in June. First, the location is beautiful. The walk to the restaurant from entering the park is stunning, and really adds to the uniqueness of the restaurant. Second, the style of the restaurant itself is amazing. It is very intimate, with grey, beige and dark tones. We have not been to a place more beautiful than Hertog Jan at Botanic. Finally, the food is amazing. I do not want to give away the many surprises, as that is something the chef will take care of. We especially liked the use of local ingredients, and the stories shared by the staff about the dishes. The whole experience is really personal, where we felt appreciated as guests. Some of the highlights: the dessert was delicious, with rich flavour combinations (truffle and buttermilk ice cream) making for a perfect dish. The use of yuzu in some of the dishes was executed perfectly and we loved the beetroot dish (amazing texture and flavours). All in all, a night to remember. A restaurant where you can indeed 'leave it to the chef'. P.s. the surprise that we took back to our hotel was perfect!

The motto "where precision meets poetry, and simplicity becomes a statement" describes the experience at the monastic Hertog Jan perfectly. We had lunch and fell in love. The restaurant blends perfectly in with the Botanic garden, the 'garden of poets'. I cannot wait to try the menu inspired on the next season.

Probably one of the most complete dining experiences one can find. From the tea ceremony at the beginning till the gift "foody bag" you open at home. Do not skip the signature dish! Why? You will see. No spoilers here. Kunst met de K van Culinair.

It was a pleasure dinning at your place. The food was extraordinary, the athmosphere was lovely and the evening unforgettable. We enjoyed the tast of so many different flavors and the time was just flying by... thx a lot!

Pretentious and not very inventive. Form dominates over content. In the middle of the meal, I had a mild allergic reaction (skin turning red and fingertips turning red, numb and itchy). I have never had allergic reactions before in my life. Maybe due to the food ingredients or the cutlery (they use tin implements for some of the courses). The restaurant could not provide any anti-histaminic. When I asked for a glass of water, the waitress first engaged in a long conversation with another table and finally brought a glass of water with a long face. My mood and evening were ruined. Michelin stars lately say more about the "have you seen me" mentality than about real craftsmanship.
