Hewn, a Top Chicago-Area Bakery, Expands to Lake County - Eater Chicago

"Hewn Bread, the Evanston bakery that’s earned a following well outside the North Shore, is opening a second bakery in Lake County. Hewn’s second location, targeted for a fall debut in Libertyville, represents an increased focus on the bakery’s retail business. Since opening in Evanston in 2013, Ellen King and Julie Matthei have supplied bread and pastries to dozens of restaurants and coffee shops throughout the city and suburbs. Libertyville’s initial menu will be a scaled-back version of Evanston’s, serving up favorites including croissants, brownies, and loaves of blonde country and whole wheat seeded bread. Grab-and-go lunch sandwiches such as the caprese and turkey with cranberry offered in Evanston will likely roll out early next year. The new location will also expand on the bakery’s coffee program through a partnership with Counter Culture Coffee, which offers free education and classes to both the baristas and bakers." - Samantha Nelson

We've been driving down to Evanston to get Hewn for years and are thrilled that this location is closer. This is the best place to get bread and pastries in Lake County now. Their locally sourced grain is impressive and the flavor of their bread is sublime. I recommend popping in and trying a pastry and a coffee. I do wish they would bring their garlic knots back.

Based on an article I read about this being a female owned and operated business and absolutely loving sourdough bread, I was super excited to visit this small take out bakery. The bread did not disappoint and the young man that suggested we try the blonde loaf was very friendly and super helpful. The bread was absolutely worth the trip. Nice crust in the outside, chewy and soft on inside and that wonderful sourdough taste! We also purchased an almond croissant and sticky roll which were both delicious. The products are packaged nicely in brown bags. The bread bag had the story of the bakery on it snd said fermented in Evanston which I thought was a nice touch and creative marketing strategy! Why not 5 stars? My issue with this business is that they are cashless, which I found out as I was trying to pay. The young woman cashier said rather rudely in a condescending tone “we are cashless, do you have a card?” When I said oh this is my first time here and I had no idea. She just stared at me blankly and not friendly at all. I only had cash on me but thankfully, my husband was with me and had his card. Customer service is a huge deal for me and this interaction felt awkward and unwelcoming. Almost like I was being shamed for trying to pay with cash. It might be nice to have a sign on the door or by the register that says you are “cashless”. Also, suggest adding this info on your website to alert the public of this business approach. Not sure I’ll be back based on this first impression. The bread was great, but the customer service specifically the rude cashier left me disappointed in the experience.

Breads are excellent - long-ferment, heirloom grains. Our favorite is the Blonde Country - slightly chewy, slightly sour, and excellent crumb. Great for dipping in olive oil, to using in a sandwich. Pastries are also overall very good - (and I've had almost all of them). The blueberry muffins are full of nice moist blueberries. The chocolate croissants could use a bit more chocolate bits in there so you can get some with every bite. Occasionally we'll get a croissant that's over-done, but it's rare.

We are excited to have this bakery in the neighborhood. We have not visited their Evanston location yet, but this is the next best thing. The staff are so nice and helpful are able to answer all questions on their bakery items. We’ve made it a Saturday tradition to pick up pastries a loaf of bread for the week. The quality of their pastries is 10/10 and you can tell it was made with high quality ingredients. Worth a visit! Or two!

Google
Since the opening of Hewn, I stop by almost once a week to get my fix of their Blonde Country loaf! Absolute perfection in terms of taste (sourdough) and texture (chewy on the inside and light crispiness on the outside). Staff is always incredibly friendly and happy to make suggestions because there are just too many darn amazing things to choose from! I’m so happy to have them in the neighborhood!

Google
Tldr: this is the best bakery, hands down. There is not a single thing I've had from this bakery that hasn't been exceptional. The bread loaves, the pastries, the cafe drinks; everything is great.

Google
My husband and I stopped in last Saturday morning and we were very excited to try a variety of pastries. Unfortunately, everything we purchased was dry. The flavors were ok, but not the quality we were expecting.

Amazing artisan bread, plus pastries and coffee. Carryout only

Yelp
Hewn Evanston is a favorite, so whilst passing through Libertyville and by Hewn I decided to stop. I picked up some monkey bread and a kouign amann, which is my favorite pastry. As usual they were delicious. It was picholine olive bread day and I almost got some because it is so delicious, but didn't know if I had space in my freezer so I had to pass this time. (But seriously if you're there and it's olive bread day, get some.) The service was friendly, and they had a nice selection still left around 11am when I was here. A different vibe here for sure because there was no one there when I entered, and the Evanston location is usually pretty busy. Parking is street only.

Yelp
It's ok. Good, above average bakery. But a bit disappointed maybe because of the hype?

Yelp
Hewn Bakery in Libertyville is a nice stop for pastries or a sandwich! They also have Tala Coffee Roasters coffee which is always good. The cinnamon roll and almond croissant were awesome. The cinnamon roll had a ton of frosting and the almond croissant was huge! Friendly service and the line moved quick! Check it out next time you're looking for fresh pastries, breads, lunch, or a coffee! I

Yelp
Omg this place! I finally stopped in here as I've been wanting to for a while but never got a chance to. It was magical. The bakery items were beautifully displayed and very fresh. I went with a ham and cheese croissant. I can't get over how amazing and huge it was. So much flavor and so flakey. So many other options as well and decent pricing. I am very excited to come back and try more! The service was quick, I was in and out in a minute or two on a Saturday morning. Ambiance was calm but small.

Yelp
We decided to stop for coffee in Libertyville. Hewn Bakery had great reviews, so we dropped in. Immediately we grated my the finally guy behind the counter. We asked questions shot the pastries for sale. Many scones, cinnamon rolls, cookies, etc. We got a money bread, cinnamon roll, lemon-ginger scone, and another roll with caramel injected in the middle. The pastries were a little plainer than expected, but moist. They were good, but just drier than expected. We were expecting sticky sauces on the pastries. We also got 2 latte's and the coffee was really good. Prices were reasonable, service was good, and the food was good.little bland but still very good. I definitely recommend Hewn.

Yelp
The coffee is affordable and service is sweet. The pastries are to die for. Great spot.

Yelp
What an awesome addition to downtown Libertyville! I love the smell of pastry/ bread when you walk into the store. The employees there are friendly and helpful with suggestions. They are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays!!! I stopped by around 2PM on a weekday and some of their popular pastries were gone already. I do highly recommend their Morning Bun, Kouign Amman and Savory Croissant. You can't go wrong with some sweet honey on your pastries! I can't wait to stop by again at an earlier time to try more of their pastries and breakfast items!

Angie M.

Yelp
Cute into town bakery with glass cases filled with crafted yummy baked goods. I chose a cherry galette which had a tender crust and not overly sweet filling. Just perfect! They do serve coffee but with no indoor seating I opted to go across the street to a cafe for coffee.

Yelp
This cute coffee shop located in libertyville is a hidden gem where you will find the best pastries. The highlight here for me was the crescents which were buttery, flakey, and the perfect texture. There are lots of choices to choose from, and the staff were knowledgeable and gave recommendations. The coffee wasn't anything special but not bad. Would highly recommend trying pastries here!

Yelp
Sheesh. Diet...say "bu-bye." This...place...is...awesome! 6 stars would be awarded! So in my quest to find pecan sticky rolls as good, or better than, my family recipe...I found a close runner-up. Light, buttery, loaded with sugar and cinnamon, with a generous amount of pecans...these are equal to counter service there---both are excellent. The other offerings I selected to "sacrifice" for my research--Ginger Lemon Scones, Chocolate Croissants, Blueberry Scones, and a Fruit Danish--all excellent, magnifique! I'm not sure what is baked on site, or at their main locale in Evanston, but all were fresh, airy, and flavorful. The coffee station also contributes to the cute, clean ambiance of the shop. The shop also sells flours for baking, if you're willing to delve into home baking, in addition to some "foodie fodder" merchandised on several racks. Try the spoon jams---fabulous smeared on one of their buttery, flaky, delectable croissants! I recommend the Berry, paired with a savory ham croissant! Delish! So the friendly counter people were so helpful explaining how the business came about and why they came to Libertyville--I am thankful Hewn has elected to serve the downtown area! Fire up those ovens, I think the community needs to break bread, once again, after Covid. Grab a coffee, get a wonderful pastry and don't forget a loaf of bread to take home. All the area grocers need to stock up on butter, because Hewn is going to cause a run on their supply! Kudos to Hewn...well done!

Yelp
I'm convinced they don't make anything bad! Every time I come in I try something new and I love it. My favorite was the savory croissant, so good! The shop is small and quaint, it's very lively but not loud. We waited a few minutes for others guests to be serviced, it was not long by any stretch of the imagination. Only critique is there isn't an option to warm any of the food items, but they are all spectacular cold!

Yelp
This Libertyville location was named as an "outpost" by the bakery with its main location in Evanston. This Libertyville shop is a grab-and-go type of place that offers different bread loaves, pastries, and coffee. I ordered a variety of croissants: ham & cheese, chocolate, & the Kouign Amman. All were wonderfully flakey and buttery- very delish! This was the first time I had a Kouign Amman and it was slightly sweet and savoury from the sugar & butter. Would recommend it! They had plenty of sourdough loves and 1 brioche option when I visited. I ended up getting the brioche, but it was a bit dry. Also it's a bit pricey. Can't wait to come back to try the other pastries!

Yelp
I am so happy Hewn Bakery has a home in Libertyville! It definitely fills a missing piece in the area. The staff is super friendly and the bread and pastries are absolutely delicious! The first time I went (grand opening), I purchased the blonde country loaf, plain croissant, and chocolate chip cookie. The blonde country loaf was just wonderful-Crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside (I had to stop myself from eating half of it on my drive home). The plain croissant was so buttery and flaky! The chocolate chip cookie was just okay. On my most recent trip (photos added), I ordered the whole wheat seeded loaf, a chocolate croissant, a savory croissant, and a matcha latte. Everything tasted fantastic! The loaf had a wonderful nutty flavor, the chocolate croissant and savory croissant were so deliciously flaky and buttery, and the matcha latte was super tasty! I'm thrilled to have a wonderful bakery to support that's so close by! Welcome to the neighborhood!

Yelp
Bread like you get in Italy! No preservatives or junk that our bodies cannot handle! Friendly staff and truly amazing bread the way it was meant to be! Can finally eat bread again!!!

Yelp
my first time at the libertyville outpost of hewn. the evanston location is pretty accessible--but o was in the neighborhood and decided to stop by. take out seems to be the way to go at this location, and there are a lot of choices. the same very good bread (publican is better) and fantastic service. i ordered a blonde sourdough, savory individual tart, and a bloob scone; chocolate biscotti (an afterthought and v glad that i did). my SO thought that the tart was great--and the chocolate biscotti even better. my one biscotti was augmented by another--on the house, which made me happy! it was YUM! and so i will return, mostly because of a great experience during my first visit.

Yelp
I love Hewn! I used to make the drive to Evanston every few weeks for a loaf of good bread, a baguette and a kougn aman. It got to be a bit of a problem, weight wise. Now, Hewn has come to me! However, I didn't realize this is an outpost, and they don't bake on site. The baking happens in Evanston, and they drive the goods over in the morning. Well, the consequences of this is 1. They open later (7:30). 2. No baguettes. 3. Smaller selection of baked goods and bread in general. There's still plenty of pastries and such, the bread is fresh and yummy, and lots of local honey/maple syrup/olive oil etc pantry staples, as well as a well stocked freezer/fridge. I'll be back! But I hope they will get baguettes.

Deborah H.

Yelp
Outstanding bread! Fresh and delightful. Lots to choose from. You won't be disappointed!

Yelp
This is the an awesome place for the most wonderful breads and pastries. Everyone working there is completely knowledgeable about ingredients which is a great help for us with allergies. I look forward to the olive bread especially! The staff seems to really enjoy working there, always happy!

Yelp
Extremely high prices--around $6 for one pastry. Staff is friendly, interior is very small and becomes incredibly cramped on busy days. We have bought pastries, brioche, and sourdough from here and weren't terribly impressed by any of them.
google avatar

Kayla K.

Yelp
Lovely bakery that also makes an incredible chai. The variety of the breads and pastries is far greater than I would expect for such a small store front. Plus, the vibes are immaculate.

Sally S.

Yelp
Fabulous bakery- highest quality ingredients and the best pastries- too bad they are closed on Monday and Tuesday
google avatar

Alicia S.

Yelp
Excellent bakery choices here! I got the ginger molasses cookie and the lemon pound cake. Both were delicious. I highly recommend to anyone who likes artisan baked goods! Can't wait to go back and try the muffins and bread.
google avatar

Yelp
A great artisan bread bakery! Morning Glory muffins were delish. Nice assortment of muffins and croissants. Good service!

Jay K.

Yelp
The best bread in the world. Love that they have a libertyville location. Wish there were more of there items in libertyville, but go get their bread. It's fantastic.

Mellicent W.

Yelp
Great artisan breads! Helpful staff. Wonderful local bakery for bread. Not a "sweets" bakery

Yelp
Found by accident when the conscious cup was packed. Great coffee and baked goods. Will go again!

Yelp
Stopped in for a quick latte and grabbed a couple pastries because why not? The cinnamon roll was delish!! Buttery throughout and heavily covered in caramel sauce oh yeah!! We were tempted to purchase a loaf of bread but @9 bucks a loaf we passed. Very good nonetheless.

CK N.

Yelp
Beautiful breads and wonderful pastries topped with wonderful consistent service. I love it.

Linda B.

Yelp
Wonderful pastries! Morning buns, Monkey bread roll, StuckBun & Cinnamon Roll... all delicious. These are definitely worth the calories!!

Felipe D.

Yelp
What's not to love!! Everything here is amazing! From the breads to the baked sweets. Just go!

Scott G.

Yelp
Great artisanal bakery and coffee, the king of the Kougin Amann. Check the schedule but be sure to go when they are open and you can thank me later.

Jay H.

Yelp
Newly opened store front for their original location in Evanston. Got an assortment to try cause how else can you know what's good. Mind you I'm going to be a little more critical of things given the prices ... but to start the flaky buttery croissant and kouign amman (don't ask me to say that) were quite good. The latter was my favorite, even great warmed up briefly the day after. Got a caramel brownie which was good, maybe not great, brownie loving kid was not a fan (maybe better with chocolate pieces in it to be able to taste the chocolate better? I dunno). The cherry tartelet (sp?) was quite nice. Similar dough to that used in the croissant and unpronounceable one. The lemon ginger scone was good though on the drier end of the scone family. Definitely need coffee for that. Will need to go back and try their breads and other pastries and cookies that I missed. Only downside to the libertyville location is that it is just a storefront, the baking is done elsewhere as far as I know (presumably in Evanston). Upside is this location is 45 mins closer and we finally have a real bakery (storefront) nearby.
