HI-Do Bakery

I bought kingcakes cream cheese here twice. The first time about a month ago, it was good. The second time, about a week ago, i can hardly taste any cream cheese throughout the cake. It definitely Haido cut back the cream cheese, and i don't think this is right.

The person behind the counter was very pleasant and gave me a history of the business, which was insightful. Hi Do Bakery’s staff if the by far the best in the West Bank. They will always greet you with a friendly smile. It’s best to arrive early or croissants, cookies, scones, french bread, etc will be hard to find. I highly recommend Hi Do as the place to go in New Orleans West Bank for a delicious treat.

Always a pleasure. Bought an almond cream filled cake for my work thanksgiving pot luck and it was extremely well received. Fed 90+ people and got rave reviews.

I had $5 this morning thinking that I could buy 2 croissants; that was the old days. Their prices have increased over the years. With tax, a ham and cheese croissant is now $4. Croissants are still fiya though!

No matter what is trending each year as the "king cake du jour", Hi-Do is non-negotiable on our annual king cake list. Yes, we get the cream cheese! But wait, there's more! Pastries, cakes, cake slices, cookies, and proper French patisserie items (from a Vietnamese bakery, no less!). I've never, not once, had anything less than delectable, delicious orders from Hi-Do. It's a quick drive to best bank, and even the longest lines out the door (during carnival) go quickly. Oh, and their breads are LUSH! Enjoy!

I got Hi-Do bakery's cream cheese filled king cake at King Cake Hub. It was FANTASTIC!!! I could eat it for breakfast with my cup of joe every day! SO soft and moist, fresh, with plenty of delicious cream cheese filling in the middle! My boyfriend always said he didn't like king cakes, but that's because he never had any really good ones. He changed his mind after having Hi-Do's and LOVED it! He was like, "I guess I like king cakes now!" I know people rave about Dong Phong, but Hi-Do has some serious game! Skip the line and overhyped craze for Dong Phong and grab some Hi-Do!!

KING CAKE REVIEW! We had high hopes for these king cakes! Unfortunately, we tried the traditional one first and it was very dry. The sugar were overly piled high. We each had a piece and couldn't eat the rest. Second chances! Cream cheese king cake! MUCH BETTER! "Cake" not as dry, just enough cream cheese to moisten it up, still had to scrape some sugar off, but much happier with the 2nd one!

Popped in today after my flu shot as I needed a boost. Plenty of items at still at 1pm. I opted for 4 plain croissants and 2 apple turnovers. The croissants were crisp on the outside and flaky on the inside, I used them the make tuna sandwiches. The apple turnovers were a bit of flaky Heaven. It was cash only, total of 13.50$ . Now that I add it up, he overcharged me, even if I add tax. Lame. Honestly though, I can accept it. Next time I'll add it up myself. This small oversight is certainly not going to dissuade me from going back. I mean I can think of a million delicious reasons to return.

I called ahead 2 days for a Saturday pick up. The person that answered the phone was pleasant and answered all of my questions. On the morning of pick up it was super easy to skip the line and go to the window for my pick up. When she handed it to me it smelled so good and fresh as if it had just came out of the oven. When I mentioned that I would be taking it to MS she was kind enough to wrap it in a plastic bag. My friend was Uber happy to get a fresh King Cake just in time for Lunar New Year. Next time I'll have to try a few of their delicious pastries as well.

Quick and easy. Came in about an hour after they opened to get a small king cake. Staff was friendly and packaged up the cake quickly. It's a small mom and pop shop and it smelled amazing. I'll have to try their bread and other pastries next time

There are bakeries for days in NOLA where one can get king cake but I'm convinced that Hi-Do is high up on the list. For years they've been serving the community their versions of high carb classics, many of which are every bit as good (if not better) than the aforementioned king cake. I think anyone and everyone who is in the Gretna / Terrytown area owes themselves a visit to this excellent local bakery. They've definitely made a name for themselves locally; everyone hits up Hi-Do all throughout the year but especially during the holidays and mardi gras. They are great on the phone with custom orders for big groups and are super helpful in helping folks choose something worthy for takeout. There are a few tables inside, but most folks are in and out. As previously noted, their king cake is legendary. It's perfectly sweet and with just enough frosting for a sugary taste that doesn't overwhelm. It is the consummate gift and a quality addition to any special occasion gathering (#1). The cream cheese stuffing and optional strawberry swirl gives it the extra indulgence that would make most sweet tooths cower in happiness. My personal favorite is when they have it in the shape of a fleur-de-lis. Not many bakeries offer this. Everything else is also on point. I love their super simplistic but tasty cookies and the fluffy crunch of their croissants. The cinnamon roll is as filling as it is underrated and the carrot cake deserves some love. I'm so impressed with this family owned biz that I go out of my way to be there every time I'm in the area. Love this bakery!!! Everyone was super friendly and they made sure everyone has their mask upon entry. Was able to get a Medium size plan king cake. Also got two chocolate covered croissants WHICH ARE FILLED WITH CHOCOLATE TOO! Those are amazing. The king cake was good too. I would probably get a filled one next time. They tend to stay moist longer. But very good price for the medium. I would recommend everyone making the drive out there to the bakery if you're in Jeff parish like me. Well worth it and not that far off the bridge.

I wanted to try a King Cake and was recommended to try this bakery. I ordered the small King Cake. It was freshly made with bavarian cream. Upon pick up it was nice and warm.

I've really enjoyed their king cake this year. It's super soft and the cream cheese is filling is good. We also get bread for banh mi here. It's a nice little spot on the westbank

Cute bakery. I have had their creme filled king cakes before, so I wanted to see what else their bakery had to offer. They had cookies, scones, lots of croissants, bearclaws, and a few more baked goods. We were in a hurry so we ordered several items and they all tasted really good! So glad we were able to make a quick stop before heading back to Pensacola.

Best King Cakes I've ever had. Their ham & cheese croissants are delicious too. Great service. They only take cash or personal checks but they now have an automatic teller machine in the bakery.

Love this bakery! Outside of Carnival, it's great for flaky streudels, classic soles and desserts. During Carnival it's a must for king cake traditionalist. They're plain, sweet doughy bread with mounds of sugar atop are the best of what my memory offers on the original McKenzies. A bonus is they're creative kind cake shapes that bend the Mardi Gras confection into crabs and crawfish. It's worth the trip across the bridge for this New Orleanian.

Hi-Do is still THE place to go! I drove from Baton Rouge to pick up 3 king cakes that I had ordered during the off-season to bring to friends in Atlanta that had never had king cake before. Yes, I carried 3 king cakes through the airport and on the plane with me. THAT'S how good Hi-Do is. When I came to pick up the king cakes, I mentioned that I was going to the airport. The staff went out of their way to first, package up the cakes for me so they'd be airtight and safe, and second, in a nice tote bag so it would be easier to carry. Talk about wonderful service. Love love love Hi-Do. And you can bet that I got some croissants to save for breakfast the next day! Days later, their baked goods still taste great.

One of the better New Orleans king cakes. I like that it's more of a light brioche with fine colored sugar....as opposed to other places having that super sweet white icing, or coarse sugar crystals. Still like the taste of McKenzie's king cake (now sold at Tastee's) better, although the Hi-Do is better for presentation purposes. We tried the plain, the apple filled, and the cream cheese filled at Hi-Do. I prefer the plain although kids like the filled version, which is sweeter. My all-time favorite king cake - which sadly no longer exists (unless someone brings it back!) - is the one from Lawrence's Bakery "Mr Wedding Cake" which was braided with a clear light apricot glaze and very fine colored sugar. Thankful that brother make the trek in the morning to Terrytown. Best to get here early.

Best bakery on the westbank! I always come here to get my banh mi in batches every few weeks. The bread is always soft and tasty. Whenever I need some croissants for a fundraiser or conference group, I always come here. Their plain croissants are buttery and flaky. The ham and cheese croissants are always a hit. And now getting to the good stuff... they have the best kind cakes!!! I always get my king cakes from here during Mardi Gras season. When I'm unlucky enough to have grabbed the baby at work, I order a large king cake ahead of time and pick it up the day of with no complications at all. Everyone loves the Bavarian or cream cheese filling but even their plain king cakes are great. Support local businesses!

The Fleur De Lis King Cake from @hidobakery. This place serves up some of my favorite king cakes in the city. It basically tastes like super sweet, soft bread with sugar on top. I'm a purist when it comes to king cakes, so I really just like it without a lot of cinnamon or white icing, and Hi Do's never disappoints . If you like filled king cakes, I also loved the strawberry filled! : : What's also unique about this place is that they will make a king cake in the shape of a fleur de lis ( above), crab , crawfish , or crown . Just make sure to call ahead.

Soooo this is strictly my review on the king cake! To be more precise, a cream cheese filled king cake! If you have never thought to heat up your piece of king cake then you gotta try it! In actuality, my king cake was fresh out the oven...and decorated with nothing more than colored sugars! No frosting ...nothing fancy...plain ol color Mardi Gras themed colored sugar! As they hand me the box, I felt the warmth of this freshly baked king cake. I was instructed to leave the lid slightly opened to cool the cake! I have never had hot baked cream cheese king cake before...I was curious to try. I cut a small piece with the plastic knife they provided.... omg! I can't believe how it sliced soo smoothly. I watched the warm, oooeeeyyy gooey cream cheese flow out of my slice. I picked it up and carefully took a bite out of it. It was the best tasting king cake ever! The bread was ever so soft, the cream cheese was melty and sweet but not overly sweet. This is unlike any other cream cheese filled flavored I've ever had! It was amaaaaazzzing! I can't believe I have never gotten one before from this Vietnamese bakery! With that being said, I will be back over and over again!

This place makes my favorite king cake. It is traditional and still uses granular sugar instead of icing. Even the small is decently sized, especially compared to the smalls other places make. The chocolate pastry I got was also delicious. They are quick and the service is great. The only slight negatives are the location and that they are cash/check only.

Phenomenal cream cheese king cake. I got it fresh when it was coming out of the oven, and it was divine. So far my favorite king cake that I've had. THEY ARE CASH ONLY. They do have an ATM but why pay that fee if you can avoid it. Also, the parking lot is not the big so consolidate cars and carpool, and save yourself the headache of finding parking. I was able to find a spot right away but why take the chance that you might not be able to. They can also make king cakes in different shapes for a slightly more expensive price. A fleur de lis, a crawfish, etc. I will be back to try their other pastries.

I knew about their king cakes but it had been a while since their chocolate croissants so across the CCC we go... A rainstorm later, we walked out with an almond croissant and a chocolate croissant and I was a very, very happy lady. These things are HUGE. I mean, took me two days to eat the, big. I started with the chocolate croissant as I'm on an endless journey to eat them all. These are not only stuffed with chocolate but also covered with milk chocolate. Obviously, they're delicious. The shell isn't as crispy as others I've had but it doesn't matter a bit because even though some croissants may be a teeny tiny bit better, this is the croissant that I know I'll crave every now and then. This is the croissant I know I'll want on a long drive. This is the croissant I'll want when I miss home.

Best. King. Cake. Ever. I lived in Terrytown for nearly 10 years and moved to Houston about 2 1/2 years ago. I've been missing Hi-Do's King Cake. It is easily the best I've ever had. We drive from Houston every year and grab us a cream cheese King Cake (or two ). Of course the traditional New Orleans King Cakes are good but I'm not not a fan of the frosting (it's too sweet) and overdose on cinnamon. That's just me, though. If you haven't tried Hi-Do, please do yourself a favor and check them out. I promise, you won't be disappointed!

We all know regardless of which side of the river you reside on this is one of the carnival season musts. My reason for choosing them is actually the opposite of everyone else. I actually avoid cakes that tend to be too sweet. I want to actually enjoy the cake and not be overtaken by fillings and toppings. I can get the original cake without worrying about it being a super dry ring like other places. This family owned buisiness has amazing customer service and a real home-y feel. I need to try a few things off the regular menu and get back with you on a more full review. I'm almost sure it won't disappoint.

Me and my roommate went here so she can try her first king cake. Pretty far from where we live--It's tucked away in a strip mall on the West Bank. The staff was very friendly. We bought a cream cheese filled king cake. I liked that the dough was soft and warm, almost like a donut! I personally didn't care for the topping. It wasn't icing, it was kind of just a bunch of purple, green and yellow sprinkles. The cream cheese tasted okay. I just wish the cake was sweeter!

Review Milestone Alert: I've hit 800! Normally I reserve milestone reviews for places that hold a significant memory for me. For example, my beloved Coney Island is review #500. Its Wonder Wheel is #700. And yet for review #800, I pick Hi-Do Bakery, a place that I visited for the first time two days ago. Y'know, at once I had a feeling of nostalgia for the West Bank the other day (I don't question these things. They just happen). I love finding new places, new neighborhoods, even better. And I have Yelp to thank for this, time and time again because the reviews of businesses in this area have been intriguing me for months now. Hi-Do is a modest bakery and appears to have been in that strip mall forever (or at least since the 70s). That doesn't mean their product is at all modest or mediocre. It's the kind of place that you might find through a local you may or may not meet in a bar if you're in town for a brief visit. But put "best king cakes" through Yelp and there Hi-Do appears in the middle of a lengthy list. And so I landed here two days ago. To try my first slice of King Cake. I've been at occasions where King Cake was served but all of these times I was vegan and so, no king cake for me. But on this day, despite my belief that avoiding sugar is the best thing for me, I decided it was crucial to try this iconic baked good. And delicious it is. I ordered up a small, strawberry-filled ring They have plenty, in different shapes (tradtional ring, fleur-de-lis, crawfish), with different fillings. Three sizes. The cake is beautiful with the requisite granulated sugar, not too much icing, and the fruit filling is similar to that of a jelly donut. In fact, the moist, chewy texture reminds me more of a jelly donut than a more dense danish (a good thing. I feared a more dry texture). Wait, if you know what this is, it's actually reminiscent of a sweet challah bread with strawberry injected into it. The cookie I tasted (with a jam center) was also divine. More than flavor, king cake is a huge tradition here and I'm glad I finally had my first bite. And I'm glad to capture it in my 800th review because only two days later and it already feels like a significant occasion.

Hi-Do's king cake is one of my favorites during Mardigras season. The cake is delicious and the filling was just perfect, light and tasty. I've tasted several king cakes before that was way ridiculously sweet, Hi-Do makes it just right, YUM! My favorite cake is always the classic filling, cream cheese.

Hi-Do Bakery is one of my top three favorite places to get king cake. Their king cake is very soft, and what makes theirs unique is its sugar coating instead of the traditional icing. Also had their ham and cheese croissant, which is highly addicting. Love this bakery.

Everything is always fresh and delicious. The croissants are especially delicious for a meal or one of the sweet ones as dessert. Their king cakes are my favorite baked fresh every morning.

Hi-Do Bakery is a Westbank gem. Greatly known for their amazing king cakes, don't overlook their showcase of pastries and sweets! The king cakes are clearly self explanatory as most reviews will tell you their unique fillings are pretty exquisite! What makes Hi-Do king cakes so unique though, is the different shapes! There's the King Crown, Crawfish, Crab and my personal favorite, the Fleur De Lis. I do recommend calling ahead for these special shape/fillings orders. Now, onto more important things. The Croissants!! For the price ($2.29), you can't beat a better breakfast that's both savory and fulfilling. My sister and I routinely come into Hi-Do for our ham and cheese croissant fix in the morning on our way to work. The sweet ladies working in the front always heat them up for us if they're not fresh out of the oven. We come too often that they know we like it warm and fresh. I love that. To top it off, we both get one oatmeal raisin cookie that is so generous in size! Check the picture I posted for proof! Though I normally take off a star for places that accept cash only, Hi-Do actually has an ATM inside for the convenience of those who tend to forget that. Since Hi-Do is a place that does accept cash, I normally don't ask for change. They don't take tips, but do accept donations for help those in need. Double thumbs up! They also offer freshly brewed coffee. This place is a locals' favorite and will continue to be as they build their legacy for the next few decades to come.

Somehow in the land of FB, I saw an article posted about the history of how Hi-Do came to be and it sparked my interest. Not to mention, it made me a bit teary (Google From Vietnam to New Orleans, Hi-Do). Anyways I made sure to bookmark for our trip home and we made sure that our last stop before departing the City was here. It's the most humble little spot off Terry Parkway in Terrytown. Everything is made fresh every day and prices are low. That has much to do with the fact that they take cash only. Funny thing is that it hasn't stopped the steady stream of customers that stopped by while we were there. They have a very loyal following and rightly so. The sweet woman who owns the shop helped us with our order and we even met her husband and their granddaughter. It's a family affair here! We decided to go with a ham and cheese croissant (my husband's fave of the 4), cinnamon roll, almond croissant and an apple turnover. The almond croissant was flaky and butter and definitely fresh. Soo good! The cinnamon roll was massive and messy (when driving) but I would only skip next time because of the raisins. lol. They are well known for their king cakes but that's for another time! Also, they have a little self serve coffee station with PJ's coffee but nothing fancy here. Just powdered creamer and sugar packets. And of course, a cooler with cold drinks. If you're a bargain hunter, check out the wire shelf of discounted bread, pastries, etc. The stale bread would be awesome if you're an expert at making bread pudding. I would definitely make a trip here if you haven't already. Supporting small businesses and mom & pops are where it's at!

Love Love Love! My day is always to a great start when I enter into this bakery! I have an almond croissant and I'm satisfied for the rest of my morning. Everything seems to be sooo fresh. The staff is always friendly and makes sure your food is hot. A great way to start your morning. I've been hooked the first time someone let me try the croissant. They only accept cash and maybe local checks.

I don't often make it to the West Bank, but when I do I'll be stopping at Hi-Do Bakery! I had been hearing great reviews on their king cakes so I decided to order one myself....a number one that is! They can make custom king cakes in a variety of shapes including numbers, letters and fleur de lis! I was pleased to know that they were finishing up my king cake when I arrived for pickup, so it was as fresh as fresh gets! The air was filled with fresh baked bread and patrons were in and out with their selections.... Next time I'm trying a filled croissant! Ham and Cheese seemed to be the favorite! Cash only!

A lot of restaurant around the city actually order po-boy bread from Hi-Do. This means they're good right!? Right. Well, they are well known for their king cakes & before, I was like so... What? But really, yes! The cream cheese filled king cake is the best! I can skip over the colored sugar though. It's not like icing topped king cake that many are familiar with. Anyways, I've brought this to work & all of my co-workers have thoroughly enjoyed it! You can order year round. The croissants are good too. I enjoy the chocolate or ham & cheese one. I know this review is all over the place :P
