Snack on Skewers of Chinese Barbecue While Being Serenaded at This Futuristic Music Bar - Eater San Diego

"Are Chinese skewers the new hot pot? One of the latest trends in Chinese cuisine — shaokao, aka Chinese barbecue — has landed at Hi Guest Music BBQ in Clairemont Mesa where the food is sharing the spotlight with local music talent. Mmm-yoso spotted the already-bustling restaurant, which recently opened in the same Genesee Avenue complex as Mike’s Red Tacos and Thai Time 3. Decorated to the max with neon lights and trippy oversized sculptures, the space is dominated by a wall-length screen on which a holographic projector broadcasts a range of immersive displays, from underwater scenes to desert landscapes. Most tables order a succession of skewered proteins, from chicken wings and chicken cartilage to beef tendon, pork belly, sheep testicles, and squid, but the mostly street food menu also includes soup, noodles, and rice dishes as well as desserts like roasted sweet potato topped with pork floss and trendy rose-infused roasted milk. At the back of the restaurant, a small stage plays host to a cast of resident singers who perform ballads, pop songs, and country music from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Made up of music students as well as professionals, the roster is open to any nationality; amateurs may also have the chance to croon a tune during late-night hours." - Candice Woo

New review- We came back to try more skewers, and it was another great experience dining at here. We also saw the live music performance this time, the singer sang really nice and created a nice atmosphere. The foods here are delicious as before. This time, I would like to recommend their vegi salad, it is very authentic! The service is so fast and friendly! Very good place to eat authentic Chinese barbecue. Previous review - Super fun and delicious Chinese bbq spot. I really love the atmosphere here, they have live music from Thursday to Sunday with the projectors all around, very beautiful. The foods here are great, their bbq is authentic and well grilled. I also love their ChongQing style noodles very much, which probably the top 3 I’ve ever had in US. Their desserts are delicious as well, I recommend the pear soup, fried milk and Jasmine milk tea drink.

Love love love this place!!! Great atmosphere and real authentic food! The flavor is very close to the Chinese North Eastern BBQ l've had in China. My favorite dishes are beef belly skewer, Sour Napa beef casserole, fried rice, and stewed pears. Moreover, the resident singer there is great! Love his singing, I think his name is Paris. Must try place in SD!

I love Chinese skewers but he doesn't, but this is the only place he likes, so we've been here twice in two weeks. He likes lean beef. I like the roasted milk, egg plant, and fried milk. There's live music when we've been here on Friday nights. The service is great and the servers are attentive. We'll keep coming back!

I recently had the pleasure of ordering from Hi Guest Music BBQ and their dishes have left a lasting impression on me. The standout was certainly the Peas Meat Sauce Noodles, which captured the essence of authenticity with peas that were cooked to soft perfection, melding seamlessly with the flavorful meat sauce. The fried rice, too, was a hit — it had a certain homemade quality that brought back fond memories of my childhood. Equally commendable were the lamb skewers, which I found irresistibly tasty and would highly recommend. This place is a must-try for those who appreciate true, home-cooked flavors.

Food here was delicious! The food does take a while to come out, but I think the wait is worth it! They also have a special $0.99 deal on the lamb skewers!

Great experience even on a Monday night! Service was great and super attentive. Even though no one was singing, the music they played was great for singalongs. Skewers were delicious and favorable and the sausage pancake was tasty. Would come again when I visit SD.

Beef belly skewers are a must!!! Good vibe, not too loud. There was a lady singing while we were there, Friday night. Great service~ would definitely come back with friends.
