Our experience at this restaurant was on October 5, 2019, so it wasn't affected by what it currently going on with the COVID-19 pandemic.
My wife and I had a layover at MSP on our way home from our vacation, and upon exiting from our gate I spotted the Hi-Lo Diner. I've always wanted to eat at the original, but it's never worked out for us, so I thought this would be a great opportunity to try it. The place wasn't very busy (less than 15 people), but it was still some time before we were seated.
I've always wanted to try their famous Hi-Tops (food on top of a house-made donut), so I ordered a Gary Cooper (fried chicken w/ syrup and gravy), and my wife ordered a Fodero Breakfast (eggs, toast, bacon, hash browns). About ten minutes goes by, and then our server comes back to inform me that not only are they out of chicken, but they're also out of donuts! Really? The dish you guys are known for you ran out of, and you're not even that busy?
I was more than a little annoyed by this revelation, but I decided to make the best of it and ordered their Hash Stuffed Hash (corned beef, hash browns, eggs, hollandaise sauce). Nearly 30 minutes later, we finally got our food. I didn't want to take a chance at waiting forever (again), so I ordered a slice of their Key Lime Pie and refills on our beverages. We got our refills and pie about 15 minutes later, along with the final bill (I insisted on getting that right away, too).
The food was good, but not great. The slice of pie was about the size of a deck of cards, and it was $7! If that was the best tasting key lime pie I've ever had in my entire life I could have forgiven the cost, but it wasn't; far from it. We left feeling very disappointed in the entire experience. We might still try the original Hi-Lo (at some point), but we'll never go back to the one at the airport!
