Trendy Dumpling Review - Greenway - Houston - The Infatuation

"Trendy Dumpling focuses on dumplings, crispy Beijing duck, and tongue-numbing Sichuan dishes. But silver tins of shrimp shumai and fluffy pork bao buns also line the tables at the Greenway restaurant. And if you’re not afraid of spice, get the boiled beef which comes in a massive pot, bathing in a chili peppercorn broth. Your eyes may water from the heat, but the flavor of the delicate strips of beef might evoke tears of joy, anyway. Trendy Dumpling has a selection of wine, beer, and sake in-house but they’re also BYOB, so you can bring your favorite bottle with you to have with your spicy boiled beef." - Gianni Greene

Wow, wow, wow! Last night, my wife, friend, and I visited Hi Trendy Dumplings in the Heights for the first time. The food was absolutely divine! The service was on point. Our meal was possibly the best Asian food we've ever had in Houston. From their freshly prepared soup dumplings to their homemade noodle dishes (soups and stir fries), to the unique appetizers, our taste buds were treated to a symphony of Asian flavors and favorites, each with a unique twist. If you're seeking delicious and authentic Asian eats, you've got to try Hi Trendy Dumplings.

Quick dumpling options to grab a bite to eat. Casual atmosphere lots of small groups good for a date night or a quick lunch. They even had instructions on how to eat the dumplings. Did seem like it was pretty busy and a high traffic spot. Could probably use a good thorough cleaning. The building was not dirty it just seemed to have a lot of dining traffic. Overall the dumplings were delicious.

Been here a few times so highly recommend the delicious weekday lunch special. Tasty food and great variety in a “bento box” style. Menu is all in English surprisingly but it was still easy to see what the items were since I’m more familiar with the Chinese names. The meat in the beef noodle soup is very lean. I prefer a little more tendon style meat. You can choose between thick or thin noodles. They make soup dumplings and pan fried dumplings in house.

This review is for take out only. We ordered walnut shrimp, biang biang noodles, Singapore rice noodle, pan fried bao, chocolate soup bao, amazing fish, Mongolian duck, and garlic pork tendon. Portion sizes were more than sufficient to feed 5 adults. Prices were okay, similar to prices back in Illinois. Prices are slightly expensive if people are wondering. Overall a 4 out of 5. It’s a good solid Chinese restaurant. -walnut shrimp 5 - can’t go wrong with this. Big pieces of shrimp. Shrimp was perfectly cooked, wasn’t dry. -biang biang noodles 5 - anyone can eat this dish if you don’t want it spicy at all. Noodles had a good chew. -Singapore rice noodle 5 - it has chicken, beef, and shrimp with spicy curry sauce. It’s not too spicy. They put a lot of meat in here. None of the meat was dry. Noodles were a little chewy. -pan fried bao 5 - it has pork inside. They were delicious. Easy to tear and the meat was juicy. -chocolate soup bao 3.5 - mostly for the kids. I prefer the chocolate baos from Din Tai Fung. -amazing fish 5 - highly recommended. Fish has a bit of a kick to it but not too much. They were cooked well. Fish was moist inside. -Mongolian duck 5 - I never saw Mongolian duck before but it was great. Duck pieces were very tender. -garlic pork tendon 4 - the pork itself was good but I think they overdid it with all of the peppers,

Delicious food and nice environment. My favorite is pork tendon and must try their buns as well. The owner is a sweet talented lady who draws the pictures on the wall!

Google
Spicy pork biang biang noodles were really good- made with actual cut up Thai chili peppers, and the noodle tasted home made (it was one very long strand of noodle that had the pork and beans plated on top of, which we had to cut). Would recommend trying this. Chili oil dumplings were too doughy and did not taste freshly made, like they had been sitting out. The Duck Duck Go noodles were probably the most disappointing. The broth was super bland, even after we mixed it up, and the duck itself tasted fine but nothing to write home about.

Low key ambiance. Staff is very hospitable. Started with a delicious soup dumpling. Mild, but flavorful. The Taiwanese Noodles were tasty with julienned vegetables and small bits of chicken. Loved the eggplant dish prepared with a light soy sauce mix. The walnut beer-battered shrimp was lightly sweetened. Finished off with a chocolate drizzled waffle topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Google
We come because we love the delicate soup dumplings. I also love the green beans and sautéed cabbage. It is great to go to a restaurant where you can get in some servings of vegetables and find it a treat. Today I tried the chili oil dumplings which were also delicious.

Yelp
I've only been here twice but the first time I came I ordered the oxtail tomato soup with the biang biang noodles and it's just one of those dishes I think about often. I actually have a notes in my 'notes' app called "dishes I think about often" because sometimes it just takes one. They say to never ask a girl what's on her notes app... cause it's just hodge podge like this ^^ Anyway, idk this soup has oxtails, these delicious thick chewy noodles, green olives, bok choy in this creamy, hearty hot tomato broth? I've never had anything like it. I'm not sure if it's a a speciality of their region or if it's just a made up dish. Either way, I think it's the tits.

Yelp
The food is fantastic, prices are good, servings are huge. The service was excellent and food came out fast. Can't wait to eat here again. Sichuan Beef Flat Noodle and Chili Oil dumplings were both outstanding. The dumplings come in a plate of 6, don't mind the late photo. Also this beef flat noodle entree could serve a family of 4!

Yelp
Quite disappointing. I've wanted to try this place for a while now.. since it first opened and just never had the chance to. I moved out of Houston and I'm back visiting and thought I finally got my chance to try it! Thai Tea was overly sweet and didn't taste like a Thai Tea-it tasted like artificial/boba water if that even makes any sense. After a few sips and trying to convince myself to drink it..I gave up and threw it out. Guess the only place worthy of getting a Thai tea from is an actual Thai place. Beef Flat Noodle was okay but definitely had better. Some beef bites tasted a bit funky or off and the beef was overly salted. Maybe they were trying to mask the funk? Chili Oil Dumplings were the only decent thing I ordered but still not that great. Will not eat here again or recommend it to anyone.

Yelp
Great place for a workday lunch. Lots of parking, plenty of tables, and quick service! Menu is vast, and I'm always spoiled for choice, I try to get something new every time I visit. On my last visit I had the vegetarian chili oil dumplings, and they were a bit one note. I've had these before elsewhere, and the inside is usually stuffed with a medley of veggies that are well seasoned. Here, it was mostly greens that weren't very seasoned so the chili oil was doing the only lifting. The Biang Biang noodles were new to me, and I ordered them because I saw that Yelp had it as a highlight, and it did not disappoint! The noodles tasted fresh, and the veggies in the dish weren't crisp and spicy. I'd happily order them again!

Yelp
Hard to believe this is in the Heights area as I'm skeptical of places that define themselves as Chinese/Taiwanese cuisine. Had a date here back in early March where we both were curious if this was the right place to visit. I think by the time we looked at the menu and sat inside, our anxiety was put to bed as the server gave us a quick rundown of the items and guided us to some solid food where we went with the following items: Chili Oil Dumpling - 6/10 Pan Fried Bao - 9/10 Taiwanese Fried Noodle - 7/10 Taiwanese Beef Thick Noodle Soup - 8/10 The Chili Oil Dumpling is alright, basically steamed dumplings soaked in chili oil and soy sauce. While you could easily make this at home, it's not a bad dish here. The pan fried bao was probably our favorite with a nice crispy texture but soft on the inside with the pork filling. The taiwanese fried noodle is the vermicelli stir-fried with shrimp, chicken, beef, trimmings, and a soy-sauce base. It's quite a portion and decent flavor but nothing that jumps out. The beef noodle soup ordered was pretty good with a hearty broth mixed with a little chili oil. I went with the thick noodles for that and I'm glad I did. The beef was tender and intensified the broth. While it's not the best beef noodle soup I've had, I enjoyed it and would get it again next time I'm here. While I prefer Chinese/Taiwanese food either in Chinatown or Katy, this is a nice alternative if I'm in a pinch and need something nearby.

Yelp
Great service, super clean, and a lot of variety. The beef soup and shrimp dumplings were my favorite.

Yelp
While in Houston, I was craving some noodles and stumbled upon this restaurant near where I needed to be later in the evening. It's located near the Walmart in the Heights area of Houston. I ordered the biang biang noodles, fried pork bun, and Mapo Tofu. The biang biang noodles were okay; the noodles were very uniform and chewy, but the spice and flavor didn't meet my expectations compared to other places I've tried. The fried pork bun had a nice crispy exterior, and the filling was packed with meat and had great flavor. The Mapo tofu was good. Although I miss the version I had in Asia, this one was decent. It had the heat I was looking for, but the flavor was slightly lacking for me.

Yelp
I had dinner here about a week ago. One of my dining partners recommended it and I'm glad he did. I ordered the beef and broccoli with flat noodles for $17. The food arrived less than 15 minutes later. It was a large plate of beef, broccoli, carrots all bathed in brown gravy over a bed of white flat noodles. It was delicious. I liked the gravy especially and the delicious noodles and left happy. I would order this meal again and our table service for all 3 of us was very good too.

Yelp
I really liked this place for the price. It was affordable and delicious. Within a Walmart parking lot, so there are tons of parking spaces. It was really tasty and i really liked the thickness of the biang biang noodles. Service was fast. Ambiance is a typical Chinese restaurant. Seating is around ~40 people.

Yelp
Trendy and delicious! It's a casual ambience serving delicious food at affordable prices. Quick service! I went to the restroom after we ordered, and by the time I came out, we already got one of the dishes! Pan fried baos: 3.5/5 The filling was very tasty and the inside was fluffy, but I wish the outside had a light crisp to it. Biang biang noodles: 5/5 so chewy and flavorful! This dish is perfect for sharing and I would definitely order again! Amazing fish: 5/5 lives up to its name! mild kick and crispy!

Yelp
Dumplings make everything better. Went on a Sunday evening during the great thunderstorm tornado power outage and I knew it was heaven as soon as I felt the ac. It is roughly 15 or so tables with a lot of take out that night. Waited about 3 min for them to clean a table off and bam. Have been to their sister spot Trendy Dumpling off the SW freeway so knew partly what was coming. Order: hai gau (crystal shrimp dumpling), soup dumplings, biang biang noodles, chicken and green beans and pan fried noodles. Hai gau (2/5) - ok, the filling was meh and the skin was a bit tough Soup dumplings (3/5) - filing was ok in taste, good ratio of soup, skin was chewy Biang Biang noodles (4/5) - chewy noodles, nice sauce, tasty Chicken and green beans (4/5) - really nice flavor and cooked perfectly Pan fried tofu (3/5) - nice flavor, some of the tofu was fried a bit hard Def will return again because the food was nice. They also have lunch specials. Would love to try their fish dish. The staff were friendly. And attentive. They do sell wine, beer, and boba! And it's only 7 min from my house!
google avatar

Yelp
I like the paintings on the wall but the food is not good. Prices are inexpensive, but both dishes we ordered were too salty. The noodle dish I got had way too many onions and only like a couple noodles.
google avatar

Tiffany J.

Yelp
We stopped for dinner after the gym one evening. The food was good with great portions. The service was fine, minimal interruptions yet attentive enough. We can sit inside for a laid back date night or take it to go. I'm sure I'll go back because it's good and convenient.
google avatar

Yelp
Great atmosphere and great service, loved how fast the food came out. Absolutely loved the spice and flavor of the duck noodle soup. Will definitely be back again
google avatar

Yelp
These are some reliably great dumplings near the heights. The rest of the spots we would typically go for soup dumplings are either in Chinatown or Midtown, either way a bit tougher to get to. The pork bao are solid. Singapore noodles were spicy, but a little dry. The meat in the noodles was cooked very well, though. This is kind of a small location, so around dinner time there can be a 10-20 minute wait.

Yelp
Came here back in January and have not stopped coming back since. The service and food is great. I've brought different friends and family members here as well and they've loved it! Now I usually order to go and eat it for lunch. Good pricing for the food. The vibes match the food.
google avatar

Sarah W.

Yelp
This was just alright in my opinion. I got the beef noodle soup (not spicy) and the broth was super bland. Maybe if I hadn't gotten it non-spicy it would've been good but it just didn't hit the spot for me. The other stuff was better, especially the garlic cucumber salad. That was definitely my favorite dish! The egg waffle was also really good!

Yelp
Interesting name but the food is the real star here. Our trio arrived moments before the lunch rush but a full dining room didn't cause any delays in service and our food was quickly brought to the table. We started with an array of appetizers; shrimp balls, beef pancakes, pan fried bao and the always needed egg rolls. The shrimp balls are outstanding, beautifully presented but chock full of shrimp and taste. Pan fried bao were delicious, so much so that I almost missed out entirely on the photo op, you instead get a picture of the pork interior. The beef pancakes were different and packed with cubes of beef. We were so full from apps, we almost decided to forgo the mains but leftovers rule. The orange beef was crispy and a little over sauced but that speaks to my preference and I'm sure if I asked it would be accommodated. The fried rice was large and flavorful. This a bright, sunny dining room with close proximity to shopping. It's enticing!

Yelp
The Cucumber salad was just cut up cucumbers, it had no flavor or garlic as described. The egg rolls stay they come with more than what was delivered and the chili dumplings were cold and chewy. I would not recommend.

Yelp
Came during an off time the other day and saw really good reviews so we were excited to try it out. The service was great and fast, they were super attentive. Even tho we came at a weird time, there were still a number of others eating and it felt like a casual place to go. We were just a little disappointed in our food though. The soup dumplings were really good and they had lots of soup in them. The pan fried báo were good, just a little underwhelming. The chili oil dumplings were our least favorite :( I generally always gravitate towards this item on menus, but these did not seem to have any chili oil on them and they were kind of hard. Like it was either not cooked completely or liek they were cooked a bit ago and left to sit. I'll try to come back and give it another try!

Yelp
DELICIOUS!!!! The service was great, our waitress greeted us in a very timely manner and brought us waters right away. We didn't have to wait long for her to take our order and get food came out fairly fast. The place was upper clean and perfectly located between the places I was running errands. I've been to the trendy dumpling on 59 and I'm not sure if they are affiliates but this is my new favorite location, everything was great. The portions were amazing! You get what you pay for. Great taste, great service and great portions.
google avatar

Tim F.

Yelp
We literally ordered all of the appetizers! Everything was great! We had zero leftovers! The service was on par and quick while the food was quick and delicious! Everything here was a 10/10 EXCEPT for the fact that for an entire hour, they replayed the same dang song over and over! If I hear "I'm glad you came" one more time, I will scream!

Yelp
Checked out this place on a Friday right when they opened. Wasn't too crowded and service was extremely kind and quick. We had a baby with us, and they were super sweet to her and accommodating . We ordered the soup dumplings, the chili oil dumplings, egg plant in garlic sauce and Hunan beef. Soup Dumplings, Chili Oil Dumplings and Egg Plant were 5/5. I wasn't a fan of the hunan beef and really just picked at the broccoli. Definitely check it out, pricing was good and service was great. Not too loud and nice for a lunch date!

Shandie M.

Yelp
This place is SO delicious and we frequent it often. We love the pineapple rice, and the honey walnut shrimp is amazing! We have liked every item we have ordered.
google avatar

Taylor H.

Yelp
The combo fried rice was solid! I wasn't super impressed with the dumplings, but loved the cooked bao beef. This feels more like a fast grab and go. The service was great. You order at the counter, but they continuously check in on you and clear the table as you eat. No loud music, so a great place to catch up with a friend.

Yelp
Clean, attentive staff and solid food. Stopped by on a Tuesday at 5:15pm. Was seated right away and the restaurant was about 50% full the entire time I was there. I started with the soup dumplings and chili dumplings. Soup dumplings were a 8.5/10. Great broth and flavorful. The dipping sauce was gingery and good! The chili dumplings were a 3/10 in terms of spice. Very mild. Overall they were a 7/10. Two of the dumplings were 100% dough with no filling. I wish they were spicier. Order beef fried rice and the baing baing noodles. Free rice was unreal and I'd order every time. Flavorful, hot and just yum yum. The noodles were good but I can't eat cilantro and they were topped and there was cilantro mixed in the entire dish. Good value and good food!

Yelp
We visited Hi Trendy Dumpling on a beautiful Saturday during lunch time. The restaurant is easy to find in the shopping area and offers plenty of parking. When you walk in you are greeted with a beautiful space that sets the rice tone for the experience. The waitstaff is very friendly and welcoming. They all work together to ensure that your experience is great. We skipped breakfast knowing we were going to want to sample as many items as possible. Here is what we enjoyed: - Soup Bao - Pan fried bao - Chili Oil Dumplings - Steam chicken dumpling - Dan dan noodle - Walnut shrimp

Yelp
Was looking for a new spot for lunch. Previously went to Luna Pizza next door and observed the dumpling restaurant next door, had to try it. Went inside the restaurant, the place was as huge inside, clean and the staff immediately took our order. I ordered some pork dumpling and they were outstanding! Furthermore I had water and it was filtered water! I ordered a lunch special, which was delicious and very good priced. I will definitely try this spot again, the food on other peoples tables looked amazing.

Yelp
So, it was alright. Outside is kinda ominous, inside is nice enough. I came to enjoy a solo lunch and was a few min shy of the lunch menu- chef was gracious enough to honor the menu for me anyway. I ordered the Szechuan shrimp (historically not my fav but my server recommended) and a size of biang biang noods bc they look so good in every pic. Maybe it was bc i came at menu change, but everything was satisfactory, not next level. Veggies were fresh and plentiful in the shrimp serving. Noods were maybe bland? It was my first time having them, so maybe that's right. Green beans were yum but a little cool in temp. I'd come back for another visit. Two word review: lunch spot.
google avatar

John B.

Yelp
The green beans and cumin lamb are my favorite. The Mongolian duck was pretty good as well. On a Friday night this place is BUSY! The place was packed, stack of people at the door waiting for a table, and with all that the staff was still gracious and moving very fast. There was a waitstaff of 2 and 1 runner/busser. And service could not have been any better! They were incredible efficient and the kitchen was pumping out food faster than expected. I think we received 3 dishes within 10 min of ordering. Our 4th dish which was dumplings might have taken 15-20 min. We were in shock the food came out so fast considering how busy they were. VERY IMPRESSIVE!!! I never give 5 stars, but they get it for their efficiency, friendliness, cool calm and collected demeanor, and of course the great food!
google avatar

Yelp
We got their biang biang noodles and dan dan noodles. Good flavor and portion sizes, but I wish the dishes had more protein. Good service and decent pricing as well.

sheri s.

Yelp
Very mediocre. Minimal flavor, pork boa were awful. Noodles were goof. Even the eggrolls were super sad with no filling

Yelp
Why 5 stars? Because we tried a lot of things and a couple of them were really memorable. --- --- --- Our family and my brother's family met up together here before taking our kids to a show nearby. We ordered a bunch of stuff and shared everything, which is truly the only way to dine. 5-stars: Mango, Refreshing, Shrimp Dumplings, Taiwain Noodles and the Walnut Shrimp. The latter two might even be 6-star worthy. The Walnut Shrimp was so sweet that it was almost a dessert, more like a funnel cake. Both were big hits at the table. 4-stars: Soup Dumplings, Chicken Fried Rice, Beef & Broccoli with Biang Biang noodles, and General Tso's Chicken. All were enjoyable, but not quite as amazing as the top list. 3-stars: Pan fried dumplings and the taro milk tea. I definitely would not order either of these again. Both were very bland in their own right. But overall, the 5-star items far outweighed a couple of things that were just okay, especially the Taiwan Noodles and Walnut Shrimp. And kudos to our sever, who was great, and dealt with a table with 3 kids and the messes that came with that after we left. My brother offered to help clean up his son's mess, but she insisted on doing so herself. This is a really good spot -- I wish it were closer to us!
google avatar

Cynthia E.

Yelp
I ordered the Mongolian Lamb Biang Noodle and the Chili oil dumplings for delivery. I loved the dumplings but wasn't so fond of the lamb Biang noodles. Just needed more flavor. I used some of the flavor from the chili oil dumplings for the Biang noodles and that worked well. I would definitely try this place again and try another dish. Good flavors overall!
google avatar

Yelp
Service was great, food was delicious. Serving size was very large. You can easily split a dish with 2-3 people. The beef noodle soup is fantastic with the right amount of spice. Chicken and Green Beans was spot on. Soup dumpling were fire. Overall 10/10

Yelp
It's a family favorite! We've been going a few times a month for the past 4 years. We've also recommended loved ones who enjoy the food as well.

Yelp
Love, love, love this restaurant!! Shrimp dumplings and the noodle dishes are amazing. This the best Asian food I've had in Houston. Would recommend!!

Yelp
Updating bc we still love Hi Trendy Today I got the cutest lunch box. The portion was great and so was the price at $11.50

Yelp
This Asian restaurant is located at The Heights ( Yale st), location is very easy to access and there is plenty of parking. From outside looks like any other restaurant at a shopping center, but once you open the door they have a cute decoration for the Lunar Year. Restaurant is clean and roomy. I like they have pictures on the menu to help if you are not familiar with these type of food (like me) and also they have instructions on how to eat a special soup they have, I think that is great. Prices are affordable and the amount of food is generous. We got two servers, the guy, a mature man was short and direct to the point, English a little broken but still able to communicate, the girl was very nice and attentive and her English was easier to understand. There was a lot of Asian people eating here, that is a great indicator for the author the food. We ordered the pan fríen bao with pork meat, very very delicious, a must if you go. We also ordered pineapple combination fried rice and it was beautifully served on a pineapple! We also got Biang Biang noodles, so delicious. And you have to try their refreshers, we got Mango and also Lychee, both were so good! Overall this is a great place to come and eat !
google avatar

Yelp
Oooh, yum! Sign me up for the Dan Dan noods and the pan fried Bao buns, always! Why? I just love 'em! I've only had to-go orders and they have always been consistently great. (Which says a lot!) The fried rice is tasty as well. Cheers to the ease of online ordering + more great eats!

Yelp
I was amazed and disappointed in this place: amazed by how incongruent the reviews and food were against the actual experiences and disappointed by the poor quality of the food and horrible service. My first impression of how bad the place would be came almost immediately after being seated and being handed dirty menus. After ordering, I looked around and noticed a glass window into the kitchen, through which I noticed a guy pouring frozen dumplings into plastic bins. I was shook. I wondered how a place with "dumpling" in its name could fathom using frozen dumplings. I got up. I walked closer. I noticed an entire freezer filled with frozen dumplings and boxes labeled things like, "chicken dumplings," which were clearly purchased from somewhere else. The dumplings tasted frozen and poorly prepared. We ordered three orders of dumplings or various flavors, general tso's chicken, and their combination fried rice. All of it was trash. I feel confidently the positive ratings must have been purchased, because the food was totally incongruent with the food and service. The dumplings tasted like they were mass produced and frozen, which they were, which might have been the most authentic part of the experience. The general tso's chicken tasted like they were 80% bread and 20% chicken. The sauce was odd and not at all like any general tso's sauce I have ever had. The rice was unremarkable and the old edible part of our meal. Finally, all of the plates had cracks on them. I'd recommend you stay away from this place.

Yelp
This place was very nice, the environment was clean. The food was so good and the flavor was there for every dish. The restaurant waiter was great and they make sure we had what we needed. I can't wait to go back!
google avatar

Josie N.

Yelp
Went here for dinner and it's ok. The chili wontons was either old or the wonton wrapper was too thick, the crunchy shrimp balls were so small and no flavor whatsoever. It was also very overcooked. The noodles were good and the honey walnut was the best I've tasted! I would skip on the apps
google avatar

Alexis C.

Yelp
Hi trendy dumpling is a great filler for "I want some soup dumplings and I don't need a ton of variety". It can take awhile to get seated but once you're there the food comes pretty fast. There isn't a ton of variety on the menu and I would say most dishes as a 3-4 star out of 5. Chili oil dumplings - they're ok, but I'm a bigger fan of Mala. Soup Dumplings - reliable and good, the dipping sauce is pretty great. Entrees - I'm a bit picky so I tend to find one place that I love their general tso and another place where the sesame chicken is great. Nothing has particularly stuck out at Hi Trendy yet, but I keep going back so that at least says there is enough good to give them repeat business.

Yelp
This was delicious food, a great value for the money and the service was excellent. The noodles I ordered were listed as spicy and they were spicy in the warily I enjoy them. I will definitely go back and try other foods!! The restaurant was clean and they have a nice variety of foods, drinks and hot teas.

Yelp
This place was amazing! We loved the biang biang noodles & chili oil dumplings. Their milk teas were a little on the sweet side but still delicious. definitely among our fave dumpling spots in Houston!
