18 Restaurants Worth a Drive Out of Nashville - Eater Nashville

"A long-standing essential in Pulaski, Tennessee, Hickory House breathed new life when owners Jonathan and Jackie Perry took over in 2014 and upped the ante for quality by offering fall-off-the-bone beef ribs, pulled pork, brisket, and some of the best Certified Angus Beef steaks in Tennessee. Weathering a pandemic by shifting the model from its former buffet heyday and adding a full bar, the Perry family shows the staying power of a tried-and-true local favorite by pivoting in the toughest of times for the restaurant industry." - Delia Jo Ramsey

We heard about Hickory House recently on TN Crossroads. My husband made a note to visit sometime. This weekend we decided to explore some & try something new to us. We drove around on the lovely Spring afternoon & ended up near Pulaski. He looked up Hickory House Restaurant. It’s near the ballpark in Pulaski. There were so many cars parked all around the building. Only 30 minutes wait said. They were prompt & so courteous to us. The restaurant was full. The service was amazing. Everyone was very kind & helpful. Their menu looked wonderful with so many delicious dishes. Steaks 🥩 are their specialty we were told. So that was our choice. Our meals were perfect & delicious. We had enough food for another day of take home. We shared a Banana Pudding. Just enough sweet to finish our dinner. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience & will return again. Thank you for your hospitality!

Nothing special, but I didn’t have the steak, which is what they are known for, I understand? Have to try it again (maybe). Wouldn’t drive out of my way to eat here, but I would stop by again if I was passing through and was feeling steak that go-around.

Exceptional Southern Comfort Food & Wonderful Service! From the moment we walked into Hickory House, we knew we were in for something special. Our meal was nothing short of fantastic, and our server, Gale, was absolutely wonderful—warm, attentive, and made sure we had everything we needed to enjoy our experience. We started with the fried green tomatoes and mushrooms, both fried to golden perfection. The tomatoes had just the right tangy bite, balanced by a crisp, seasoned crust, while the mushrooms were juicy and earthy, bursting with flavor in every bite. For the main course, the brisket was simply outstanding—tender, smoky, and so juicy it practically melted in my mouth. It paired perfectly with the green beans, which were slow-cooked and seasoned just right, giving them a deep, savory richness. The cucumber salad was a refreshing contrast, crisp and cool with a light, tangy dressing that balanced the heartier dishes beautifully. We also had the salmon patties, which were packed with flavor—flaky, moist, and seasoned with a perfect blend of herbs and spices. And then there was the chocolate cobbler—rich, decadent, and sinfully good, with a gooey, molten center and a slightly crisp topping that made every bite pure heaven. Just when I thought it couldn’t get any better, I finished with the cast iron cookie and vanilla ice cream—and it was to die for! The cookie arrived warm, with a crisp golden edge and a soft, gooey center, while the vanilla ice cream melted into it perfectly, creating the ultimate sweet and creamy bite. The food, the service, and the atmosphere all exceeded expectations. Hickory House is a true gem, and I can’t wait to come back for another unforgettable meal!

Good place to eat. Had some business to take care of and wanted to eat at a local restaurant. This place was recommended. Got fried mushrooms to snack on. We both got hamburgers, loaded baked potatoes and I got coleslaw. Can’t complain about the food at all. Unfortunately for me they were out of banana pudding. We did get apple cobbler to go. I would recommend this place.

Google
I rarely purchase food at a restaurant. I spent almost $40.00 on my familys meal The hamburgers were blood, red and french fries we're soggy. I called up to complain to the manager. The lady took my name and number she said either someone would get back to me or send me something in the mail. took my name and complaint said they would get back to me.

Google
We met my daughter and her fiancé there as like a halfway point from where we live. Thank goodness we found this place we got there Saturday night about 5:30 2 prime rib dinners were ordered A volunteer plate was ordered and the hoecake was ordered. Also fried green tomatoes. 😋 Everything was delicious and we all shared with each other. I am not a rib fan but this place made me a believer!!! That's how I like my ribs, meaty, tender and delicious . Let's not forget the cobbler, Saturday night was apple and nothing pedestrian about it, not mushy at all like many places serve, hats off to the owners, this place is a gem in your town

Google
We ordered fried oyster, ribeye, grilled cheese, fries, catfish fillet and loaded potato. Also we ordered to go brisket with 2 side (fries) and very disappointed because the server kept forget the food and he didnt include the bbq sauce to my brisket. We will not going back to this place!

Google
This isn't the fanciest looking steakhouse you'll ever go to, but its steaks put some of the fancy ones to shame! I was amazed how good their steaks were, their Kansas City strip is without a doubt one of the best steaks I've ever had! The appetizers and sides were great too. I'm not sure about the deserts because I was too full from steak to try them! We will be back here for sure. Its not cheap, but you get what you pay for, and you definitely get your money's worth here!

Yelp
If you want some good authentic southern food, go here. Service is amazing, they're always nice & helpful with questions when you're indecisive. Ambiance, amazing. Smells good, clean, & food is great!

Yelp
Love Love Love One of my absolute favorite places ! Always spot on Best Brisket hands down !

Mike V.

Yelp
Came by this location while in Pulaski for a football game. Decided to try the Brisket and the ribs. Both had decent flavor, but was a bit disappointed with the size. We definitely didn't get a full rack of ribs, and the brisket was a bit skimpy too. That being said, the service was excellent and we had a good time trying a new place

Roger B.

Yelp
The food was fantastic. The service was great. We were not rushed to eat. Location is a little awkward, but super being beside the ballfield.

Bougie P.

Yelp
Drove 12 miles off of I-65 to come have lunch at this place only to find out they were closed for renovations. It would've been customer-mindful to broadcast that information in your website. Waste of time and gas. Boo and hiss!

Yelp
Came here for lunch while in town on business. I was there with some folks that knew the owners. It is a rustic looking place, I think it was meant to be that way, it wasn't dirty or anything just rustic. They have "incredibly" expensive steaks, BBQ, burgers and an $8.99 lunch plate with 3 sides. Kind of an interesting mix of options. I had the smoked chicken with collards, lima beans and creamed corn. Before my food made it to the table they were out of corn, this was 12:30 in the afternoon. It took a while to get our food which cut into my already tight agenda an I was not informed that I could not get the sides I ordered until food was delivered. The server was not very attentive to our needs either, drinks were empty for some time before they were refilled. My 4 star rating was because the quality of the food was much better than the service, speed or preparedness. All of the food was cooked properly and seasoned well. I wouldn't go here on purpose again but if invited I wouldn't say no either.

Yelp
Stoped in first time. It was fairly busy. Being called hickory house I expected some tasty smells but was unable to get a hint of anything. Ordered bbq over cornbread and slaw. Very bland no hint I was eating bbq. Cornbread almost burnt. Considered a steak. Better make sure before you order one of those pricey things. That's why I tried bbq. If it's a steak house I couldn't smell them or any kind of bbq going on there

Yelp
The hickory house has amazing food! They also have an amazing team working for them, my food was brought out to me in under 15 mins, now that's a good place to eat.

Connie J.

Yelp
First time eating here. I was not impressed. We ordered Sirloin Steaks. Mine was rare and tough. The collard greens tasted like canned greens. The service was very substandard. Our server barley checked on us, I really expected better than this. I definitely won't be returning.

Richard M.

Yelp
Everything was fresh and prepared well. I got it as carry out and they included extra sauce.
google avatar

Joan G.

Yelp
This restaurant has awesome lunches. You choose 2 meats, 3 veggies, plus cornbread and cobbler all for $8.99. Great pulled pork BBQ sandwiches too. Clean and friendly.
google avatar

Alicia W.

Yelp
Still one of our favorites. Ordered the onion rings today. Don't do it! They reminded me of Burger King onion rings. Seriously you can do better.

Brandy L.

Yelp
Great food. Hospitable staff. Clean. Nice environment. Down home and comfortable. Could not have been happier.

Yelp
No masks on any servers or patrons, no social distancing, tables and customers cheek to jowl. Welcome to the Brigadoon bubble. COVID hot spot? It's your choice. We saw what was happening inside and decided to wait outside for a to go order. Maybe BBQ is just really worth taking a risk over yourself and family and friends. That's what Darwinism is all about, after all. Or maybe just go to a safer restaurant until next summer. Nevertheless for the time being, the owners, staff and clientele of the Hickory House seem to have developed herd immunity. To common sense.

Yelp
We left without being served. We were ready to order when our waitress dropped off our drinks. Instead, she left to talk to people at another table. The people at this other table were obviously friends with several of the workers there, because the hostess/manager also came around to talk to them. After about five or ten minutes of chatting with them, our waitress took their order and left without taking ours. This was in spite of us having been seated before they were. After sitting around for another ten minutes, hearing their loud, profanity-laced conversation from across the room, we decided to leave. On the upside, after I explained our rationale for leaving, the manager/hostess comped our drinks. All of this happened on an evening when we'd travelled over an hour from Huntsville, AL. We'd done so because of the COVID-19 restrictions in Alabama, and we knew that TN had loosened their restrictions earlier. This was to be an early Mother's Day dinner for my wife.

Aubri Y.

Yelp
It sucked, I took a bite and a hair was in it. It took 1 hour just to get my food and the waiter was so rude

Yelp
Great little bbq joint in Pulaski TN. The building itself is neat in that it appears to be built into the side of a hill. Delicious southern sides to go with the bbq including their own bbq sauce made in house. Jars of it are available for purchase. Very friendly staff especially the gracious owner, a really lovely & charming lady. I will definitely comeback!

Sean F.

Yelp
Treated myself to the 22oz Bone-In Cowboy Ribeye. I've had great steak all over the country and Hickory House is as good as it gets!!! Steak was cooked to the perfect temp and delicious. Collard greens had great flavor as well. Highly recommend!!
google avatar

Ricky R.

Yelp
Outstanding food. They have a really good buffet and the prices are outstanding. It is in an odd place but it is worth the drive.

Shane R.

Yelp
You don't accidentally end up here. GPS gets you close and one road over. Parking wasn't an issue but I can see where it may be at times. Make the effort. I honestly overnighted in Pulaski because it was the most reasonable Hampton Inn close to my route. I'll come back specifically for Hickory House. Pleasant, prompt service and the ribeye exceeded what you have any right to expect.
google avatar

Yelp
Great change of pace to try. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Nice quiet little place. Food was awesome the pulled pork and the smoked chicken were extremely tasty as was everything on the buffet. They have a good selection of everything from beans, multiple kinds of potatoes, good selection of vegetables and great desserts. Even the salad bar was great and the price was the best surprise very reasonable. A must try.
google avatar

Yelp
My visit to The Hickory House was fantastic. The servers were extremely friendly and welcoming. The food was absolutely wonderful. I'll had The Volunteer, their sampler. Everything was cooked perfectly, the pulled pork was tender and tasty, the smoked chicken was juicy on the inside, just the way it's supposed to be , and the smoked sausage was some of the best I've ever tasted. I'll definitely be back next time I'm in Pulaski !
google avatar

Bryan P.

Yelp
This has so far been one of the better steak and bbq restaurants that I have been too and if you are going here I would recommend the buffet but the ribs are out of this world also the prime rib is awesome and everything on the buffet was A++++++++++ so I give them 5 stars
google avatar

Henry V.

Yelp
One of the best southern buffets I have ever seen. And I have seen a lot growing up in the Carolinas. Everything was fresh from the garden. Salmon patties today with stemmed okra and real creamed corn. This is a hidden gem.
google avatar

Yelp
Unbelievable! Great value and the food is AWESOME! Enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere and friendly service. I WILL be back the next time I am in this area.

Yelp
Don't waste your time coming here!! We came on a Saturday afternoon with our daughter who attends Martin Methodist. When we came in I was skeptical of the buffet when seeing it. Went ahead and ordered the buffet and was never told that it would not be restocked because it was going to be pulled in about 20 minutes. So we each had one plate with a small amount of pulled pork. When we asked if they were going to bring anymore out, that's when we were told that the buffet was over and it was not going to be replenished. The food is average at best and the service was absolutely nothing to brag about. There are definitely better restaurants and bbq in town. Check out the Rusty Spur, much better!!!
google avatar

Cara D.

Yelp
We were looking for some good southern BBQ. Stopped for a quick bite to eat on our buisness trip per recommendations from Yelp. This place was fast, clean, and had everything a great BBQ should have.
google avatar

Jason D.

Yelp
They offer a buffet style barbecue. The pork, pulled pork, chicken was all moist and tasty. The ribs were a bit dry but had good flavor. Corn bread lacked taste, vegetables and rice were good. Staff was courtious and attentive. Location makes parking tricky and tight but worth the stop.
google avatar

Jeff E.

Yelp
This place reminds me of my grandmother's cooking. Great southern comfort food at a great price. This place is worth driving from Nashville!
google avatar

Kimberly R.

Yelp
I'm no BBQ specialist, but this was very tasty. We ordered takeout and it was very loud over the phone, so we knew they were busy. It's a small, family operation, which I found really fun. I wish they had put silverware with our order, but we managed. For sides, my daughter loved the mac and cheese, and I thought the cole slaw was really good. You may like the baked beans, but I wasn't a fan (my husband was, though). I'd recommend this place for sure.
google avatar

Monica P.

Yelp
We drove almost an hour, round-trip, off Ii65 to eat here based on positive Yelp reviews. Unfortunately, after eating the Friday night buffet, the best I can say is, meh. The cornbread was dry, the ribs were tough, and I had to sort through the stack of plates to find a clean one. The mac n cheese shells were boiled to within an inch of their life. I gave three stars because the hush puppies were tasty and the sliced pork, while a little dry and hard to come by, was flavorful. Also, the young woman who waited our table was friendly, although our dirty dishes were never cleared the entire time we were there.
google avatar

Yelp
There Filet Mignon (Mama's Q's) is top notch above anyone steak place I can think of. We go to Conner's frequently and it's better than there's!! We have always enjoyed the hickory house but for whatever reason didn't realize about there steaks!! Fantastic!! Hickory House all the way!
google avatar

Sonya Harbin P.

Yelp
Best buffet food ever!!! The ribs and smoked chicken to die for!!! We live about 40 miles away but the drive is so worth it!
google avatar

Dez S.

Yelp
I kind of hate this place because I love it so much!!! I want to eat here all the time!! Every time I have family come in from out of town I have to bring them here! I also recommend to anyone who visits our town.

Sharon J.

Yelp
Can I say yummm yummm! Brisket plate delicious. My husband says best smoked sausage he's ever had. We didn't choose the buffet but after eating off the menu we would not hesitate to choose the buffet. Use your GPS to locate it- it's a little bit of a surprise - its street just behind Sonic

Darla L.

Yelp
Awesome lunch. I had a pulled pork sandwich and my husband had the beef brisket sandwich. Told our waitress next time we were bringing a cooler and take home some bbq by the pound. If you are looking for small town quaintness and good food - you have found the right place.
google avatar

Jeff C.

Yelp
I know the name sounds like a BBQ place and they do have great BBQ but we ordered a filet and ribeye steak. This was the BEST grilled, hand cut, Certified Angus Beef I've ever eaten! And when you add truly southern side dishes you can't go wrong!! We will defiantly be back and bringing the whole family!
google avatar

Bama B.

Yelp
We are regulars here and have never been unhappy. It's hard to find a parking space during lunch but it's worth the short walk to the overflow parking. Both the buffet & menu items are great and the beef is local. If you're getting take out, call ahead. It can get a lil crowded at the register. Overall this place has good food and friendly faces. A home town favorite for our family.

Chris H.

Yelp
I had the chicken with broccoli and baked beans. The rest of the family had brisket, chicken sandwiches, etc. Everything was delicious. It wasn't too busy and the staff was friendly as you would expect to find in a small Southern town.
google avatar

Michael R.

Yelp
Now that they have weaned out the weakest servers, this place is pretty good. The cobblers are worth the price of admission ( peach is the best ever) but you will pay for it later with that kind of sugar overdose. I really like the spicing of the bbq, the smokiness, and their house beans. The service last Wednesday for lunch was exceptional so she got a fat tip and a compliment to her manager. If they would leave the sugar out of the green beans and the collards, (totally grossed me out), it would be 5.

JP S.

Yelp
Drove from Huntsville Alabama to Hickory House to celebrate Mother's Day a day early with my family. We chose Hickory House based off of the great reviews it had online. We arrived at the restaurant and were quoted a 30 minute wait. We weren't seated until an hour later. Once seated, we were told that many of the items on the menu weren't available due to shortages of food. Our waitress took our drink orders and left. During this time, a party full of the owners friends were seated at a table near us. Our waitress returned with our drinks and quickly left before we could place our order so that she could go socialize with the party sitting at the other table. She talked with them for at least 10 minutes, then took their order ahead of ours. All the while, the party sitting at the table were using vulgar language and being very loud. My three younger siblings were disturbed by the display that these friends of the owner were putting on. So much so that my youngest brother had to put his hands over his ears due to the language. After not being waited on for 20 minutes due to the party of friends, my parents and I decided that it would be best for us to just pay for our drinks and leave. We spoke with the waitress and the manager on our way out and neither of them seemed to have much remorse for the events that lead up to our decision to leave. It's a shame we didn't get the chance to taste the food. We just couldn't justify to ourselves paying high prices for a limited selection of food, all while not being waited on and having to listen to the owners friends being allowed to curse. Based on this experience, I cannot recommend Hickory house to anyone.

Yelp
This place is great! The food is great and the service was excellent! Great place to go for a steak or ribs! Wonderful atmosphere! For sure not a chain restaurant. You won't be disappointed.

Yelp
Happy to find this authentic Southern Sunday buffet lunch. Not much else around was open as we drove from one State Park to another, so we were glad to find delicious fried chicken, BBQ, Lima beans, greens and homemade cherry cobbler just the way my Mom use to make it. Delightfully friendly waitresses happy to refill our sweet iced teas. If you are looking for true Southern home cooking, this is the place to go.

Yelp
My family just across the state line and has been raving about this place ever since they tried it so when I came to visit this is the first place they wanted to take me. An hour drive through the country later, we arrived at a cute little establishment kind of tucked away at the bottom of a hill. We were cheerfully greeted and seated by one of their wait staff. Because my parents were so pleased with their past experiences with the BBQ buffet, I opted to try it instead of ordering an entree. They give you the option of just the buffet or the buffet with a salad bar. It being a BBQ buffet I doubted I would have room for a salad so I chose to try the buffet on its own. They had a very nice selection, comprised of ribs, shredded pork shoulder, greens, creamed corn and essentially all the Southern staples that a good BBQ should have. I was stuck on the ribs, cornbread, cream corned which were all delicious. The ribs practically fell off the bone and every taste of every dish reminded me of all the cookouts we've had and still have. It's the kind of cooking only your grandmother can do. The real star for me though was the blackberry cobbler. Cobbler is my favorite Southern dessert and I often make if over the summer when blackberries and peaches are at their peak. This cobbler had a nice flaky crust that held up to the moist filling. The crust was on both the top and bottom of the cobbler which made the flaky, dry texture all the more surprising. Surprising yet very welcome! I'll definitely try to visit The Hickory House every time I come to visit my parents!

C L.

Yelp
Good service, nice family atmosphere, and excellent food. They had a buffet but we ordered from the menu

Matty C.

Yelp
Fantastic food! Greatly respectful and caring service. Highly recommend. Beef is locally sourced and fantastic. Your steak should be cooked to the temp you order as long as you respect the quality of the meat and order rare. Will be back. I certainly loved it. P.S. Try the catfish.

Yelp
The Hickory House has reopened under new management. I always enjoy good family owned places and the Hickory House didn't disappoint. I ate lunch there today (12/2/14) and had the BBQ buffet. The food was good, the atmosphere was nice, and the service was AMAZING!!! I also saw some plates of catfish coming from the kitchen, can't wait to go back to try those out. The buffet changes daily, today it was pork chops, BBQ chicken, sliced pork, and pulled pork (very good!). The hot sides were also very good, I had the rice with mushroom and the mashed potatoes. The buffet is $7.95/ lunch and you can add the salad bar for a few dollars more. They do have wine and beer. It's a small place and the parking in front fills up fast but there is a small city lot locates just across the creek (don't worry there is a bridge, you won't need your fishing waiters). I enjoyed both the food and southern hospitality and will definitely be back the next time that I am in town!
