Something has changed. In the past it was delicious. Last visit, cold hard sandwich with 1 slice of meat, no potato sticks or pasta salad on my to go order. Potato soup has changed, texture is gel like. Only good thing was the zucchini bread! Overall, very disappointing.

Hickory Street Cafe is a must if you’re in Abilene, Texas. This cafe that serves up some of the best homemade zucchini bread that you’ll ever come across and can be bought in loaves to go, is only open during the week for lunch. It also serves salads, sandwiches, soups and other fresh baked goods. The children’s menu includes Mac and cheese, which was a hit with some of our group. The chicken salad and quiche were also made with fresh ingredients. I had a sandwich with a side of the cream of potato soup and fresh fruit cup topped with yogurt… delightful combination. And what’s better than a good meal served with a raspberry ice tea with free refills. It was a charming atmosphere in a historic home with very tasty food. In fact we bought a few loaves of the zucchini bread to take back home because it was that good. Tip - make reservations to make sure there’s a table available. Highly recommend!

I've been here a few times before and it was always wonderful. Not so this time. The broccoli parmesan soup was tasteless so I returned it and the sandwich was mediocre. My waitress did not ask if I'd like anything in replace of the soup nor did she ask if we wanted dessert or take home containers when she brought the check. I asked if it would be deducted from my check and she said nothing in response as she wisked away the cash for my tab and debit card for my friend's. Shortly thereafter, she returned the debit card but never brought back my change. She and 2 other employees were talking about a customer at the next table over in front of all the other customers. Having waited for quite some time, I eventually got up and asked the hostess for take home containers and my change. She immediately brought the container and interrupted the employee conversation to inquire about my change. Our waitress brought back the change with no reduced price for the uneaten soup, no answer as to why, no apology, no thank you and no "have a nice day". There were other items to note but space is limited. Very disappointed on multiple layers, especially the lack of courtesy and customer service! I will go to Sweet Thyme Kitchen next time instead.

First time here, it will not be my last! Came after lunch rush and it was peaceful, but I’m sure even with a ton of people the food/service no doubt would still be just as excellent! Words couldn’t express the attentiveness our waitress provided! (Unfortunately I cannot remember her name! Sorry!) and the front desk lady gave the most warm welcoming and cheery feel! The atmosphere was bright and airy. The decor was spectacular and gave you a farm/cottage house feel. We had the Philly cheesesteak, chicken salad sandwich, and the side fixings of pasta salad, broccoli cheddar soup, potato sticks, zucchini bread (absolutely delicious!!) , paired with their sweet iced peach tea! Please, if it’s a lovely day or even a rainy one… stop in and have brunch or lunch! You will not be disappointed!

Google
Oh my goshhh it was delicious. The zucchini bread was amazing, the Wisconsin cheese soup was AMAZING, chicken salad AMAZING! I came for my birthday I had never been before, now I’m gonna have to make this a monthly thing

Google
This place is sooo good....reminds me of England it's such a great spot. It was very warm in there and they grabbed a fan just for me..... definitely recommend this gem of a restaurant.

Google
BE AWARE= Food was great and really nice customer service when I picked up food, BUT since I found them through menu online and called my order in...I was unfortunately shocked/confused to get the total. I got home with the order and had to check online again that the prices I had seen online were correct. Approximately $3 to $5 difference in most items on the menu! So you can see how that might add up quite a bit. I hope to see them update the website ASAP... Would have hoped that they would stick to their online pricing for the mistake or *make it a point to inform customers that do call their order in, that the prices are quite different online. Again staff were really nice but, price difference wasn't told to me when ordering over the phone or even when I picked up the food.. only explained over the phone to me AFTER I'd gotten home and double checked what I saw online to make sure I wasn't imagining the menu prices.

Google
I have eaten at Hickory Street cafe for almost 20 years. After today I sadly won't be returning. Whoever bought them is running this business into the ground. The Wisconsin cheese soup was bland and lumpy. The zucchini bread use to be amazing it has become dense and not the same. I am sad as this use to be a well loved establishment, however, I think those days are gone

Yelp
Love this intimate little place. Come to dine here every time I'm in Abilene. The waitresses have been there for years and the atmosphere is very homey, like you're coming back to mom's house for lunch. Highly recommend. They also do seasonal desserts/loaves of bread like Lemon Poppyseed and Carrot Cake!! Delectable.

Yelp
This is my third time updating my review, which I feel like says something in itself as I normally do not go back and update! The atmosphere of Hickory Street is cute! It's truly the vibe of a grandma's cottage! Good place to meet for lunch! The pricing, quality, and quantity of the food served continues to not impress me though. I think some days it's better than others here. I like the experience itself and not so much the food here if I'm being transparent.

Yelp
WOW! I'd heard great things about this place and was super excited to try it. I got the chicken salad sandwich and it came with 2 sides, so I chose the pasta salad and for an extra $1 the zucchini bread. The sandwich was absolutely delicious and fresh with crunchy grapes in there. The pasta salad was good, but nothing super special about it. They gave me 2 delicious and warm slices of zucchini bread with butter on the side. If you only get one thing from here it has to be the zucchini bread! I ordered my food to go and it came out quickly.

Yelp
It's been a while since I've submitted an issue of "In my Humble Opinion." I'm kinda falling behind. In my humble opinion. Hickory Street Cafe 5 stars February 22, 2023 Me and my Aunt arrived before 11am and already people were waiting for the door to open. Hickory Street Cafe is a cute 1 1/2 story cottage style cafe refurbished into a small restaurant. Each room inside seats 2-4 tables. We sat in what May have once been the dining room. Placed our order around 11:05 and lunch hit the table at 11:09. Seriously swift service. We both ordered the chicken salad. Mine was on the croissant sandwich. The service was great, food was amazing. And I absolutely must recommend the zucchini bread. It was fantastic.

Yelp
This place is a cute little lunch spot. Everything is fantastic! They are known for their chicken salad and the zucchini bread which as they should be. They claim zucchini bread is a vegetable which yes let's make that a movement. Everything is delicious. It is a very small place so make reservations if you can. Because it is so small, there are often only around 2 waitresses for the entire place so pack your patience and maybe don't expect refills to keep flowing but otherwise it's great!

Yelp
My family and I had lunch at Hickory Street for the first time, and it was a wonderful experience. From the start, the servers were kind and attentive. I was also delighted to see that many of the entrees came with their famous zucchini loaf. The bread was so good--probably the best zucchini bread I've ever had. I also had the cheese soup. It was good, though it could have used something crunchy to go with it. I had the salad sampler for my entree. All of the salads were good, along with their homemade maple vinaigrette. The pasta salad was yummy, but the chicken salad was my favorite. I loved the cashews on top, which I've never seen before. Prices were also very reasonable. This is such a cute lunch spot; I'd definitely come again.

Yelp
Restored old house converted into a darling tea room style restaurant. Service was great and the food was wonderful. Great place for ladies to visit and enjoy conversation with a variety of delicious sandwiches, salads, soups and desserts.
google avatar

Yelp
This place has a lot of healthy options. The raspberry and peach teas were excellent as was the turkey, Swiss, avocado spread croissant. You can eat inside the traditional sit down way or outside on a park bench.
google avatar

Ren B.

Yelp
This place was AMAZING. The service was wonderful and the food went well beyond my expectations. The ambiance is adorable and cozy.

Yelp
Wonderful as usual! Peach tea, Broccoli Parmesan soup was a great start! It wasn't long and their marvelous chicken salad with 2 thick slices of zucchini bread. Always so nice to come here. Great service and food!

Yelp
Worth a 7minute drive from the highway. The restaurant was very busy but did not have to wait to be seated. Had their chicken salad and zucchini bread, both were delicious. Also drank their peach tea which was quite good. Restaurant is in a historic home, cute ambiance. Reasonably priced as well.

Yelp
I used to love eating here, but each time I've been lately it has been completely bland. The "famous" chicken salad tastes like plain boiled, shredded chicken with a few grapes and cashews thrown in. The pasta salad has had little to no dressing on it. And side salad had warm lettuce. Just overall not a worthwhile experience anymore for the money :( the zucchini bread and maple dressing are both still yummy though, so if you go I recommend those. All the desserts looked good.

Ben P.

Yelp
The food was ok, Lady's would probably really love it, but it was just not my style. I'm a chicken fried steak and tators kind of feller. I do know my wife loved it though.

Justin W.

Yelp
A great place to eat. I love the fact that they have new food options on a regular basis. The atmosphere is welcoming and nice.

Yelp

Yelp
Driving through Texas. We used the Yelp to see if we cound find something different. And this is it. We got here as it was opening and people were already waiting to get in. The waitress was the best I've seen in a long time. She seemed to know the right questions to ask to help us get exactly what we wanted. And the food was delicious. We ate great sandwiches and salads, and we loved the zucchini bread.

John W.

Yelp
Fantastic eats. My wife and I have been twice now and both times were great. Food and service were top notch and the zucchini bread is worth every penny.
google avatar

Yelp
This restaurant is fabulous in terms of food and is one of the most unique restaurants I've ever been to, it's zucchini bread is quite good as it's highly suggested, they also serve great sandwiches and have a good amount I've diverse things to pick from the menu as well as a make your own sandwich. The service is so kind and never fails us always working hard to make their customers feel good! The restaurant it's self is an old house from a long time ago which really makes the mood really chill and calm in my opinion. I highly suggest this restaurant to anyone!!!

Yelp
The sandwich was phenomenal!! I love croissant sandwiches, and this was a perfect one. Next time I will try the BLT on a croissant. The pasta salad side was super small and nothing to rave about. The shoe string potatoes are a weird addition that I could go without. They're just awkward to eat because of their size and they just seem like something you'd snack on at home, not get at a restaurant- especially when dining in. Not satisfied with the sides. I think I'll see if they can be subbed out for something else next time. It's a very cute restaurant with a decent amount of seating. There's even a super walk up window for to-go food. I stopped by the window to get a peach tea (sooo good) and zucchini bread (which I did not try, I got it for a friend. But I've heard great things about it!) I really wish they were open on weekends because I'd love to go here more often!

Marguerite B.

Yelp
Busy little place ... chicken salad sandwich is delicious. Get there early. 15 minutes after opening it was almost full inside. There's a takeout window outside making it very convenient. I definitely would go back!
google avatar

Tim L.

Yelp
Great little restaurant/cafe! Service was fast and friendly and the atmosphere was very cozy and family oriented. Had the "famous" chicken salad sandwich and was very impressed. Prices are very reasonable, lunch for 2 for less than $25. Great place for lunch, check them out!
google avatar

Yelp
Place is quaint and cozy. It's basically a converted house into a restaurant. Their potato soup is a must have. They also have excellent zucchini bread. Honestly order anything there. You won't be disappointed.

Isabella B.

Yelp
The new owners have completely ran this place into the ground. We've come multiple times within the last two months, and each time we have had to wait 40 minutes to an 1 hour and a half for food to come out. Nothing fancy, just sandwiches or simple salads. I saw multiple tables walk out,and to-go has been up to an hour and a half every time we try to order! Every time we've come,we have been told they are training new kitchen staff. Not sure what happened to the ones they had had, because this has been an ongoing problem for months now. The employees have seemed just as put out as we are,and have apologized for their new management. Last time we came, they had also changed the meat within the chicken salad, and began using cubed chicken. The quality of food has gone down, and you're having to wait longer for lower quality food instead of the usual 15 min. Not to mention,we have also seen the unprofessionalism of the new managers. We have seen one of them come out and cry in front of customers, and could hear loud cursing/arguing all throughout the restaurant. We never had these problems when the restaurant was under Amy. I hope they fix things soon, because it was so good at one time.

Yelp
wife and kid got avocado spread turkey sandwiches and they were good. I got the chicken salad on croissant and it was a big ol meh. the potato straws are just lazy and canned. $37+ for something I could do better putting together at home

Kate M.

Yelp
so yummy. Awesome salad awesome place. Great service great vibes ! had the Harvest salad and peanut putter pie YUMMMM

Yelp
This is one of mine and my husband's favorite lunch spots! The food is always great and the service is quick and very friendly. I love that the soup rotates throughout the week. The peach tea is the best in town and the zucchini bread is top notch! My husband loves that the BLT has preserves on it and how hearty the bacon is.

Jeannie R.

Yelp
Taco salad and chicken salad are both amazing. The quiche and sandwich combo are also very good.
google avatar

Taylor S.

Yelp
WOW! This has easily become one of my favorite places for lunch. You can order outside and eat at their tables on their beautiful yard or go inside where this beautiful home has been turned into small seating areas that make it feel cozy. The staff goes well above and beyond to make you comfortable and make sure you try all the good stuff! I had one of their amazing salads with their maple vinaigrettes and it was soooo delicious! (Not to mention zucchini bread- a gf one too! On the side) They had this Wisconsin cheese soup that lit up my taste buds and made me so happy! I'll come back a million times

Yelp
Preface: I have not eaten here in probably 15 years. I cannot speak to what the menu, the service, or what the current state of business here is. However, I have such fond memories of this place to this day. It's been so long but I can still remember the zucchini bread and the potato soup. I had nearly forgotten all about it until I saw the name of the restaurant come up on the map. From the more recent reviews I am seeing, I am positive this place hasn't lost its touch. Hickory Street Cafe & McKays Bakery the two (most classic) must eats when in Abilene.

Samantha P.

Yelp
Super cute little place. Lived in Abilene almost 6yrs and never tried it until now. A great little lunch spot. Food was good. Bread was fantastic- dessert was great! Definitely a cute little cafe with such nice service and a literal home felt atmosphere

Laura S.

Yelp
Wonderful visit!!! Had a lovely lunch with my daughter while on college visit. Zucchini bread is to die for!!
google avatar

Yelp
I needed this spacious, Covid 19 precaution, brunch. If you have not been. Stop and go now. They close at 2pm!

Elizabeth H.

Yelp
Delicious lunch in a super cute setting! Place was packed. To go orders are easy if you are just passing through town. I love how you get options for sides other than just chips. Would've posted a picture but I ate it too fast :)

Yelp
The chicken salad and zucchini bread is awesome! Woman food so good even guys love it, too. I just wish they were open in the evenings. It's hard

Yelp
Enjoyed a wonderful lunch with great service in a delightful environment! The chicken salad did not disappoint and the zucchini bread was every bit as good as it gets.

Glenda L.

Yelp
Good food nice comfortable sitting area, quaint and quiet place. Love the zucchini bread loaf and chicken salad plate.

Yelp
Our must visit restaurant in Abilene TX every time we're in town. The chicken salad croissant is outstanding and so is the zucchini bread!!!

Torey B.

Yelp
I love hickory but I left my Sunglasses there and they threw them in the trash after less than a week. They were not very nice about it when I called and those were nice sunglasses. Customer service not so great.
google avatar

Yelp
This little hidden gem is amazing! This restaurant has limited hours- 11-2 pm. It's located in an old house that has been redone to cater to the restaurant needs. We were seated immediately, ordered our drinks and food. The service was quick which was great as we were in a time crunch during prime weekday lunch hours. The food options are great and have some healthy options as well. The menu ranged from salads, soups, quiches, and croissants. The zucchini loaf is a must try as well. I couldn't decide if I wanted butter or cream cheese so I opted for both.

Christine M.

Yelp
This was my second visit. The cafe is in a cute cottage in the downtown area of Abilene. The food was delicious and service good both times. I recommend this restaurant.

Nichole C.

Yelp
Good food and service! Love the sampler Where you can try a little bit of everything. Raspberry ice tea is amazing, wish they had an unsweetened version though.

K D.

Yelp
How have I missed eating here? Oh my! I now know better. I went last Friday with a friend. I had the Harvest Salad which comes with feta, almonds, pecans, cranberries and THE Chicken salad. Comes with a side of 2 LARGE slices of warm zucchini bread. I asked for cream cheese for mine. Oh and not to forget peach tea! Yummmmmmmmy! I had no room for dessert, but they had key lime pie (my parents favorite) so I got 2 pieces to go for them. Big hit. I will be back. Such a treasure.

Help N.

Yelp
Food is still delicious! Always order salad sampler-Recommend House ranch dressing. Don't forget zucchini bread!

Angela G.

Yelp
Love the harvest salad!!!! Zucchni bread is wonderful!!! The maple vinegarette makes this salad over the top!!! Not to mention the chicken salad is superb!!!
google avatar

Yelp
This place was just wonderful! I brought my state bound cross country team here (8 girls plus me) and we were totally surprised by how cute the cafe was! Not only was the cafe just darling, but the staff were oh so friendly and kind. And the food?? Just delicious. I'm coming back here for sure!
google avatar

Michelle T.

Yelp
Great food! The chicken salad is one of he best out there. Try the daily soup as well, the Wisconsin Cheese scared me at first thinking it would be way too much, but it's lite and delicious! The zucchini bread is okay, my mother-in-law has them beat.. The hours are not as convenient as I would like, but I guess that's why this place is special you have to plan for it. I would LOVE to see them try a Saturday morning brunch tho... there is no place in Abilene that offers a real ladies brunch (you know NOTHING fried except bacon-cause that's all that's around).. they have the setting for it.

Nelia L.

Yelp
Love this place. Will continue coming here for anything on the menu. Usually get the chicken salad sandwich but opted for the BLT! Absolutely awesome!!

Yelp
Chicken salad and zucchini bread is amazing! Thank you for an awesome lunch as we travel through Abilene!
