17 Remarkable Coffee Bars to Discover in Orange County

"Located in a historic house on a picturesque street that feels utterly removed, this hidden gem is worth the venture. While the coffee menu is delicious and the pastries are baked in-house, it’s the good-heartedness of the owner that elevates this cafe to something truly unusual. Hidden House is owned by a local Marine, and the San Juan location has incidentally been dedicated to town veterans, as noted by the cafe’s Wall of Honor. There’s also local lore about the place bringing luck in love after multiple people, including the owner, fell in love on the front porch." - Jordan Morosco

The Hidden House Coffee is such a cute hidden gem! The cozy vibe pairs perfectly with their delicious selection of pastries—both sweet and savory. I loved my iced maple brown sugar coffee (so smooth and flavorful), and the cinnamon rolls were amazing. The jalapeño ball was a tasty surprise definitely worth trying. Highly recommend if you’re looking for a chill spot with great coffee and treats!

Google
First. Time. Here. San juan Capistrano Hidden coffee. There's line but the wait is worth it. Delicious fresh coffee and vegan chocolate chip cookies for me. And the just walk outside and enjoy everything there. I always wanted to be here. And I love ♥️ this place.

Google
Very nice coffee shop in a cute neighborhood. The line was fairly long because it was so busy on Sunday afternoon. They have their own blend and lots of merch as well. The coffee was really good and had a strong flavor. Staff were very friendly and polite.

Google
Hidden House Coffee is a true gem! The service is always friendly, making every visit a pleasant experience. Their coffee is fantastic, with a variety of flavors and plenty of milk alternatives for lattes. The pastry selection is top-notch—everything is always fresh and delicious. One of the highlights is their seasonal kombucha, which is always a refreshing treat, along with their expertly crafted lattes. I’ve been coming here for three years now, and I always look forward to getting one of my favorites—whether it’s the Honey Lavender Latte, the Matcha, or in the past the dearly missed Maple Bourbon Latte. The atmosphere is absolutely gorgeous, making it well worth the 5+ minute wait. If you're looking for a cozy, high-quality coffee spot, this is it!

Google
Great space Great service Great coffee Quaint nice place with home vibes. Theres indoor and outdoor seating right across the train station so u get some cool views of the train passing thru. The attendants were nice and patient and kind.

Google
We stumbled across this coffee shop on our visit and it was amazing. Their matcha with homemade strawberry syrup was delicious. I highly recommend trying this place out of your in the neighborhood!

Google
Service was lighting fast despite the line being out the door. We basically got our drinks (batch brew, two iced lattes) by the time I tapped to pay. My disappointment lies in the pastries. I saw they had Kouign-amann and was thrilled to try it. Let me tell you— do not get the kouign-amann here. The one I had was, while fresh, extremely bread like and almost cakey? It was so dense and definitely NOT what is standard for this pastry. There were zero layers and you can tell they didn’t even bother with the lamination or butter process on this batch. Obviously Hidden House isn’t known for its French pastries, but tbh I felt like I was misled by false advertising. Any decent baker would be able to bite into one of these and say “this is more of a donut than a kouign-amann” before putting it out for customers to buy. Totally disappointed by that, but at least the coffee was good and fast.

Google
The name fits since about 3 different people asked me on the street where I picked up a cup of coffee. They def know how to pull a good espresso and the vibes fit. Only downside is you may get hung up on the other side of the tracks with a passing train but maybe that’s supposed to be part of the experience.

Yelp
Adorable area. Parking can be hard. They seem to have a lot of regulars that come in there. Baked goods looked good but didn't get any. Super small inside. My bourbon latte was delicious. Would definitely go back

Yelp
This is a super cute and neat spot that's quite literally "hidden" in historic San Juan Capistrano. It's on a lovely street with a cozy interior and a nice enclosed patio area with a fair amount of seating. The service was quick and friendly. My maple bourbon latte was a solid latte, but I was a little disappointed that I couldn't taste the maple bourbon. Other than that, I would come back to try some more items on their menu.
google avatar

Kimberley K.

Yelp
Had a great experience here. The matcha was actually good. They were very accommodating to my "lite ice" request and tried to make it according to what I wanted. These people actually know what customer service means. I loved the historic vibe.
google avatar

Yelp
Very busy but they are quick! Coffee was good. Grab a cup before you head to the mission.
google avatar

Polly H.

Yelp
I can't comment on the service because I wasn't the one to order but my goodness is this my favorite chai? Absolutely fricken YES! Most dirty Chai's give me a stomachache but this one was perfection in a cup! Love love love and would absolutely recommend this place

Yelp
You know the staff are a bunch of coffee connoisseurs when there's an Espresso Tonic on the menu. YAY! I'm totally here for it. I am always on the search for the hippest latte menu I can find or the trendiest curated espresso drinks with a bougie or serene setting to people watch while sipping on my $8 liquid treasure. It is who I have become and I am okay with it. Places like Hidden House Coffee celebrate me and my crazy coffee habits. Delicious Espresso Tonic by the way.

Yelp
I went out with my friends and my boyfriend over the weekend and there was an hour wait for our table. We decided to walk over to Hidden House Coffee since everyone needed a lil pick me up. There was a small line once we got there and it grew after we arrived. It was very cute and cozy inside which is always a vibe when it comes to coffee houses. We all got the same exact coffee which was a dirty chai latte with oat milk. It was tasty and I would totally go again When I'm in the area again.

Yelp
What a quaint coffee spot! I was in the area attending an event and afterwards we decided to walk the area and found this cute spot. Although full from a previous meal, a iced Chai tea sounded good. The service was very friendly and quick. It was quite busy, mostly people ordering to go. With the chill in the air, all the indoor seats were taken. They also offered some baked goods which I did not take advantage of. I will certainly return to try some another drink and baked goods! Merchandise is also available. This sweet spot is located in the center of the train drop off. You will find other shops to visit and many restaurants as well. Why not grab a drink and goody while you wait for your train/Metrolink. You'll be glad you did. Check them out!
google avatar

Yelp
Cute coffee shop/hangout spot. It's gets quite busy throughout the day but the line moves quickly. Tried an oatmilk latte with vanilla and it was delicious. The coffee is smooth and full of flavor. Prices seem reasonable when compared to other coffee shops. It looks like they make their own flavor syrups. They do not accept cash. They have a decent amount of seating outside and some fun board games to play. Nice way to spend some time outside when the weather is so nice! The whole area is very walkable and easy to get around.

Yelp
Hidden House is a must if you're looking for good drinks and service! I love how attentive, friendly and welcoming they are! This is what keeps me coming back ps make sure to sign up for their rewards

Yelp
Line out the door. Is it cause it's close to the train or.... It's the coffee, people, and pastries The girl at the counter was pleasant and friendly. None of the typical coffee house snobbery. Has a welcoming smile. I should have gotten her name. But she had these cute stars on her face. Ordered chia latte: sweet not to spicy, perfect taste & temp Kouign-Amann: one of my favorite pastries of all time. You rarely see it places. Was delicious. Perfect amount of sweetness American and marine flag out front which I appreciate.
google avatar

Heather D.

Yelp
This is always a great, local spot. Today I tried a maple bourbon latte. This was pretty well balanced with the amount of sweetness. This is a great spot tucked away behind the train where you can take your coffee to go and walk around the area with scenery.

Yelp
Stop here first, grab a cup of the best coffee you'll ever have, and shop the shops of old downtown San Juan Capistrano. Seriously, this was my best cup of coffee ever. In fact, it was so good I had to ask where the bean was from and how it was prepared. The beans were from Guatemala and they offered a small bag for just $23. When we walked in the smell was so grand that we knew we were in the right place. The quinticental coffee shop.
google avatar

Yelp
Background On Visit: Was out all day and needed a pick me upper to drive back home. Background On Owner: He's a marine so come support! Didn't get to meet him, but his 2 minute and 2 seconds speel about his shop and his life made me want to visit. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8WQRBci1AM4 Restroom: Restroom is available. Just one unisex restroom. You might wait for a bit to use it. Wifi: It's available Type Of Payment: They only take credit card. Cash is definitely not KING here! Coffee Program: They roast their own beans Pastry Program: Kevin Montoya of Carley Cakes Location/Parking: Located near the San Juan Capistrano Train Depot. Parking can be found in the parking structure for $2 an hour or you can find free parking in the surrounding streets like Camino Capistrano, El Camino Real, or Forster St. Ambiance/Decor: This shop reminds me of this coffee shop in Azusa called, Mantra Coffee and BNB. Pretty chill place with minimal furnishings inside, but decent amount of tables and chairs outside. Service: Service was good and drinks came out at a decent time. Coffee Of Choice: I had the Guatamalan roast. It was solid and was the right pick me upper that I needed to drive back home. Coffee For Thought: It would be nice to visit again.

Yelp
I've avoided this place for a while because of the long lines but this time the line wasn't so bad. I did enjoy my experience. It is a tad pricey but I can see why it's so popular. I saw several people walk away after waiting in line because it was so slow. My only real complaint is they don't stay open later.
google avatar

Evie B.

Yelp
One of the best coffees I've ever had plan on going back the next time we're down in San Juan Capistrano. The staff were very nice and friendly.
google avatar

Yelp
Stopped by to grab a bite to eat. The place is very quaint and it was busy. I didn't grab anything to drink but settled on a Bagel Bomb Herb. They sold out of the bacon cheddar :(. Cream Cheese and Cheddar Cheese Center was a nice surprise. Overall, not bad for a bagel. The coffee shop reminded me a Hobbit House. Outdoor seating and indoor seating is available. WiFi password is expresso.

Yelp
I really wanted to love this place but they kinda dropped the ball. To start, there was a long line but gotta give them kudos for creating a nice place on a really nice street. As you walk in, the Sonos speaker is right above the door entrance which makes it hard to hear your partner next to you. They would be better off moving that to the corner of the room. Service wise, the girl that took our order wasn't friendly at all. Not sure if she was having a bad day but she didn't seem happy or excited to take our order. I ordered an iced peach black tea. My gf got a latte. Her latte came out pretty quick and I noticed people behind me got their coffee right after. I was confused because usually ice tea is quicker to serve than making espresso. I had to ask the barista for it and he poured me one where the cashier was. He was really nice and apologetic about it, but made me realize that was the cashier girl's responsibility which why I never got it. I'd recommend checking this place out but they really could improve the issues I mentioned.

Yelp
Hidden little gem! So cute and great place to catch up with friends :) tasty drinks and great service! WiFi is a bit spotty so working remote is rough. Still enjoyed my time and excited to go back!
google avatar

Yelp
The coffee was ok, nothing special. The order taker did her job. Why the 1 Star. Refusal to accept American dollar. This is not ok and is discriminatory. I support businesses that support the American Dollar.
google avatar

Jaymes M.

Yelp
Ok...I seriously don't get the ratings. I've been here several times over many years, and each time I am just not impressed nor do I like my drinks. I don't know why I keep going back. At our most recent visit, we ordered an iced coffee. We asked if they were able to do an iced Earl gray latte to which they said "uh...yeah...yeah, we can...". I should've said never mind right when I heard them hesitate. As you can see from the photos, the drinks were so watered down. I don't think they brew strong enough to account for the ice watering down the beverages. We sat Inside the cafe and were able to observe that the windows and walls needed some wiping and cobwebs taken down. When I say webs, I'm talking real spiderwebs. I didn't have a chance to approach the pastry display so I didn't get to see how clean that area was. A reviewer on Yelp mentioned the display case was filthy. There is ample seating available to the front and sides of the cafe but not sure if I could ever sit out there as nothing seems to get wiped or cleaned. That's too bad because the cafe looks so homey and adorable from the outside. It seems to be pretty popular. Closest parking will be at the parking garage across the way for $2 an hour. This was our last visit.

Yelp
This place gets points for it's unique coffee experience. They sell a unique version of matcha (not like starbucks) - legit uji matcha at your service. The baristas are very friendly, despite being very busy and noticeably on the move. They are efficient and the matcha latte was delicious. My father didn't care for the drip, and I agree it tasted a little old (we got there around 4PM). There's a line so the wait is long, but it's a must for coffee lover's if you're in San Juan Capistrano!
google avatar

Azusa H.

Yelp
There was a line when we got there but it went by pretty fast. I got an almond milk latte and my so got the dirty chai latte and they were both pretty good! They also had pastries on display which looked delicious. The cafe had plenty of seating outside and minimal seating inside. They also played good music which I appreciate. The staff was friendly and overall a good experience.
google avatar

Shelley Y.

Yelp
Cute little coffee shop by the train tracks. I went on a Saturday afternoon and the line was quite long, but it does move quickly. I got the cold brew with cold foam. The coffee itself is more fruity and the cold foam is not sweet.

Karina P.

Yelp
What a literal [[hidden]] gem! Espresso was dialed tight & right. Miles had a great over the counter manner & really knew his stuff.
google avatar

Dee A.

Yelp
After our brunch at Breezy, we came here for some coffee. I distinctly remember a great experience here several years ago when I ordered their decaf VANILLA LATTÉ. So, I ordered it again, while my son got A MOCHA. I was so sad 'coz their coffee didn't taste like how I remembered it to be. It tasted so bland and weak, granted I got a decaf, but I also tasted my son's, and it was also disappointing. My nieces and nephew weren't impressed with the quality of their coffee either. It was such a buzzkill as I was raving how great their coffees were, and it turned out to be subpar. Not much service interaction here. You order, pay, and they call your name once the order is ready. Overall, this was such a disappointment. Their coffee no longer tastes as good.
google avatar

Nani V.

Yelp
This is a cute little hidden gem in SJC! I tried the chai latte and it was delicious! The service is friendly and efficient. Only thing is they don't have a wide selection on the menu but whatever they do have is really good!
google avatar

Heather R.

Yelp
Hidden House Coffee is a cute little coffee shop across from the train tracks. The menu isn't huge and the vibe is slightly "hipster." There's a decent amount of outdoor seating. I ordered a vanilla latte (decaf). The flavor was smooth, the vanilla was sweet, and the drink was exactly what I expected. The place gets crowded in the mornings, from what I could tell.
google avatar

Lo G.

Yelp
It's such a vibe here and omg the cafecito! Love this place and will be coming back. Great little shops and so fun to take the train on a Saturday to get there and avoid traffic.
google avatar

Jason H.

Yelp
Iced Matcha Latte was great. Hot Coffee Latte was really good. Service is okay but not too friendly. I don't think most the staff likes the job. The place is filthy. The glass pastry display cabinet was disgusting outside and inside. There is good reason they are putting the pastries inside plastic clamshells and then in the case. With how bad the display case is, there is zero possibility of me ordering anything from it, even if it is "pre-packaged". I would be surprised if the floors are swept even weekly, let alone daily with how bad the hard floor and rings looked. The counters and walls needed some attention too. My mother always said, if this is what they are showing to the public customers, you can be sure the back of the house that the public doesn't see is even worse. I probably won't be back as there are a lot of good independent coffee roasters in OC that seem to be cleaner. I would give them two stars but the drinks themselves were pretty good and they didn't make me sick (if that's something?).
google avatar

Yelp
Hidden House Coffee is such a cute shop, I love it. A good stop if you're in the area. Took a stroll with the doggo and was feeling an Iced Matcha Latte so I stopped by. It was the perfect pick me up, not overly sweet but also not too bitter, and they have dog bowls for a water break. I used to go to the one in Santa Ana pretty frequently but didn't realize that this is the same shop and the original location, neat! They're located in Los Rios Historic District. There is a free Los Rios Parking lot. I also sometimes park at the Los Rios Park, they have a free parking lot. Then I walk over from there. Prices are a bit high but I feel like most coffee shops are pricey these days so I guess this is the new standard. There was no wait on a Saturday around 4 PM. Service is friendly. Inside is cute with a couple tables you can sit. They have more seating outside on their porch and patio. Outside is also very cute and feels relaxing.
google avatar

Caitlin D.

Yelp
I'd give this place in between 3-4 stars. This was my first time in San Juan Capistrano and after seeing so many tea houses I was pleasantly surprised to see a coffee house. It was quite "hidden," had to be seeing it from a certain street to see it (or walk down further!). The outside of it reminded me of Pannikin or somewhere cute in Hawaii. Upon walking in it felt really homey and I loved the smell of the coffee. It smelt so good, I had to get a latte! I asked for an iced honey lavender latte. The guy thought I said decaf latte. I retold him and he finally added honey lavender. I said iced twice and thought he noted it, but I guess he didn't. When it came out it was hot. We mentioned it to one of the people at the espresso bar and he remade the drink (and didn't ask for the other one back). You know some places are cheap and they just dump the hot coffee over ice (which waters it down). I'm glad he didn't do that and he remade it for me! Although drinking the remade drink: iced honey lavender latte. I'm a bit disappointed with the flavor. It didn't taste like lavender nor did it have a strong honey flavor. I'd give it a 2/5 for not tasting like the menu suggested it would. - honey lavender was emphasized in purple on the menu. But 4.9/5 for service! :) There's minimal seating inside and then even more seating outside. There's a bathroom as well if needed! They had coffee merch lined up inside as well. Tshirts, hats, tumblrs, and coffee bean bags. Something to note, we came around 1pm and they were all out of pastries!

Yelp
I'm a Hidden House Stan and am at my local Hidden House in Santa Ana at least once a week. I finally made it to this location when I was visiting a friend out here and absolutely loved it! The vibes at this store versus Santa Ana are somewhat the same in that it's a beautiful space to relax or work in, but this location is definitely where you go to just sit and slow down. I ended up parking at Los Rios park and walking here which was about a 2 - 3 minute walk. I saw the parking structure across the train tracks, but my GPS routed me to the actual house and I was not able to turn right to go across the tracks to the structure. It worked out though since I didn't have to pay anything for parking. I worked from here for a little bit of the day and thought the only outlets were inside the house, but when I went out on the patio I noticed they had outlets and extension cords there too, so look for a seat on the patio if you're looking to charge a phone or laptop and sit for a few hours. Hidden House Coffee never misses and every drink I've ever had from here is always great. They have lot of seasonal drinks so be on the lookout for those and give them a try. The latest one I'm into is their cookie butter latte. This location also has really good tea drinks and their pastries are made in-house at their Santa Ana location and are what keeps me coming back. Their almond croissant is my go-to, but if you're hungry and want a savory snacks that will hold you over until your next meal, the bagel bomb is the way to go. Ask them to warm it up for you.
google avatar

Victoria L.

Yelp
Such a cute place! I don't know the area that well so I'm sure there may be easier places to find parking, but I found the last street parking after scanning for a couple minutes. Couple seats indoors but the majority of seating is outside. I love it! It's right by the train tracks so you can hear and people watch. I brought my pup and sat to journal. I got a dirty chai with a croissant (omg the croissant was so butteryyyyy so good!!)
google avatar

Yelp
I like to visit here pretty often, but it's usually in the morning or earlier half of the day... Decided to stop by on a whim on a Tuesday afternoon and the two employees working today were so nice to my friend & I and I think it's been the best coffee experience here so far. Thank you Also the playlist is so great and calming

Yelp
Fun, quirky, gf muffin is good, latte was good too with almond milk recommended - San Juan Capistrano

Yelp
The name says it all. This is a hidden gem in SJC. I went in to grab a quick coffee before jumping on a train and then I saw it - the Herb Bagel Bomb. It was delicious especially when they warmed it up for me. Wow -- crisp on the outside but soft and warm inside with cheese oozing out with my first bite. Each bite seemed to put a bigger smile on my face. The iced mocha was also good - strong, but good. I will be back for both.
google avatar

Arie R.

Yelp
This place is adorable and amazing!! It's in old town on the oldest street in the area. Lots of restaurants and a tea house and I'm not sure what else. Great to being visiting people or go with friends and family. Orange scone - omg so good!! The orange was zesty and sweet but not overly so. Vegan chocolate chip cookie - soft and fabulous! Who cares it's vegan?! Good for everyone Pumpkin spice latte - not too sweet and you really taste both the pumpkin and the coffee. Delish and would get again! Honey lavender latte - also good! Even less sweet and I thought the pumpkin wasn't sweet. People that like sweet will say it's not sweet enough and will want to ask for more sweet. It was good though! Greta service. Workers was so nice!! Prices average for a coffee shop, not cheap.
google avatar

Sam L.

Yelp
Cute little coffee shop right by the Amtrak station. There's not much room to sit inside (max 4-5 people). When I arrived on a Saturday morning around 10 AM, there was already a decent line forming outside. It appears there's also wifi as there were quite a bit of people working at the cafe. ..... MATCHA LATTE: 1/5 would not get again, it just tastes like milk CHAI LATTE: 4/5 pretty strong spices, but honestly a bit too sweet for me (I got it hot this time, but I can see it being tasty as an iced drink though)
google avatar

Katheryn H.

Yelp
Cute coffee shop, the bagels bombs are good, but mannnn the workers are little *****. So rude. I overheard them make fun of the all the customers while waiting for my order that they messed up on ‍
google avatar

Gayle C.

Yelp
Such a nice coffee shop, the staff were professional and friendly. Our orders were prompt and delicious. We ordered two different types of cookies and a slice of banana bread...so good.
google avatar

Ashley J.

Yelp
The Hidden House Coffee sits along side Historic San Juan Capistrano. Steps from the train, restaurants, shops, and the mission, this small shop is nestled along a narrow road. Inside and outside, this place is popin. Even on a random weekday, it's busy. But don't let that keep you from coming here, it's worth it. The staff churns out curated drinks relatively quickly. They offer your basic menu of latés and mochas with some fun seasonal drinks like a maple blueberry. I enjoyed the vanilla lavender laté myself. They have a few pastries, pies, and croissants. My favorite was the bagel puffs. Stuffed with cheese and herbs, these treats are worth it. There's a parking garage across the street, or a small park nearby with free parking. There is free wifi, indoor and outdoor seating. There is also a wheelchair accessible ramp.
google avatar

Yelp
GET THE COFFEE HERE!! The flat white was the perfect steamed milk of my dreams. Cozy vibes!

Yelp
Cute coffee shop in San Juan Capistrano. I ordered a decaf mocha latte iced no ice with extra chocolate and a an iced coffee. The iced coffee was quite good but the mocha was disappointing. It had absolutely no chocolate flavor whatsoever. The place had a few tables inside and plenty of outdoor tables. Good for a basic coffee.
google avatar

Janie D.

Yelp
Adorable coffee shop in a historic home in old town San Juan Capistrano. The interior is quaint, with lots of old photos; it really feels like you are in someone's home. They have a good amount of seating inside, and outside on the front porch. My first impression was great, but when I stepped inside, it was pure chaos. The place was packed on a Friday afternoon, with little kids running around. Drinks were spilled on the floor. The line moved very slowly. When I finally got to the counter, I was disappointed to find that they were sold out of all baked goods at 2pm; even the granola jar was empty. I got an Oat Milk Latte, which was one of the worst lattes I've ever had. The espresso was burnt, and the milk was watery. My husband was already drinking coffee from a nearby gas station, and his was objectively better. They use single origin coffees, so perhaps the baristas just need better training.

Kristen R.

Yelp
One of our favorite spots in San Juan Cap! The staff is always friendly and love the atmosphere. Chai and Matcha drinks are always delicious!
google avatar

Jennifer W.

Yelp
10/5/22 Nestled on a street that is a coupling blocks from the Mission, Hidden House is a true GEM. No bones about, got me an oatmilk latte & it was so good. Strong but not overpowering. I love that it looks unassuming & unpretentious, great customer service & just real good coffee. It looks like it was a house with a porch converted into a coffee place. Would love to come back to this place if I'm in the area.

Yelp
Great Service. Cute location. I got a dirty chai based on someone's recommendation and I loved it. Definitely recommend.

Yelp
Going here for over 5 years and it keeps getting better. The coffee has always been top notch, but the facilities, amenities and food accessories have really improved.

Yelp
Love this coffee shop I liked the cold chocolate Somewhat inconsistent wifi -will try again to confirm
