The Best Restaurants in Eugene, Oregon | Eater Portland

"A cozy community gathering place, Hideaway Bakery is best known for its breads, pastries, and pizza, made with organic grains and baked in a wood-fired oven. But its penchant for baking is just the start once you dive into the cafe menu, with breakfast staples like chilaquiles and or a lox bagel with layers of cream cheese and lots of capers secured in place with plenty of cured fish and a pile of lettuce and pickled onion. On sunny days (and maybe even the gloomier ones for those lucky enough to get a seat under the awning) the patio is unbeatable. Order at the counter and expect your coffee to come out the side window." - Brenna Houck

Great food, large (mountain rose herbs) tea selection. Friendly staff and nice atmosphere. Gluten free options. Decent prices. And aptly named as their signage is easily missed. Definitely a local favorite!

This cafe was highly recommended while we were in town. We arrived early before the crowds and I was excited to try the Parisian. Unfortunately there was some miscommunication about the ovens and we would have had to wait over an hour and fifteen minutes for a sandwich. Very disappointing especially on a weekend during the Track and Field Olympic Trials when you know the town of Eugene will be busy. We did have nice espresso drinks and got a free pastry. Edit update: I returned a year later and it wasn’t any better. We ordered three simple sandwiches (two were the same and one was a breakfast sandwich) and it took 41 minutes from the time that I paid to the time that we received our order. It was around 2p. That’s excessive.

7/30/25 - The owner of Hideaway Bakery read my original review from 7/23/25 and refunded our meal because of the poor experience we had as stated below as well as letting me know that staff would be informed on how the situation should have been handled. Therefore, I have changed the stars given from 1 star to 4. I really appreciate that they did this, and this makes me want to give our experience there a 2nd chance. I have never posted a poor review, but my daughter and I had a bad experience at Hideaway Bakery yesterday. I called at 11:50am to order our sandwiches because my daughter had a short lunch break. When we arrived at the bakery to pay for the sandwiches I told them I called in my order. After waiting over 30 minutes and seeing people who ordered after us receiving their orders, my daughter asked if ours would be ready soon because she needed to go back to work. They said somehow they lost the order and would make them right away. Finally, at 12:45, we got our sandwiches, and my daughter quickly ate half of it on our way to drop her back off at work. The bakery didn't even offer to make it right in any way. I had added a 20% tip when I paid, which was not deserved. Also, the tables under the cover, which were shaded each had a single person on a laptop at them, so we had to sit in the full sun in 90-degree heat. It was not a good experience at all, unfortunately.

Great little hidden gem!! Love the food and the atmosphere here. All the staff was super friendly!

Google
This place is so SO good! They have a huge wood-fired oven, so the place always smells faintly of wood smoke in addition to the incredible smells of the fresh baked treats. There is a full menu of delicious breakfast and lunch options. They have lots of gluten free goodies, including several varieties of artisan bread and a dedicated GF pastry case every day. They have indoor seating, but the patio outside is definitely the best place to sit (bring your well behaved dog!). The line can move slowly during the peak morning rush, so allow yourself a good 20-30 minutes.

Google
Delicious brunches by the fireplace await (or eat on their covered patio, or an outdoor table in the warmer weather)... fantastic toasted sandwiches, sweet and savory pastries, homemade breads and cakes and yummy coffee as well! Sometimes on the weekend, the wait for your food is extremely long, but it's always worth the wait... just peruse the Eugene Weekly while you wait!

Amazing bakery. Coffee was incredible! Best treats!

Loved this place. Everything was delicious! Expect a line and go early because they run out of everything. Strawberry lemonade is a must. Great atmosphere. Laid back with lots of charming flowers.

Yelp
An absolute classic neighborhood breakfast and coffee spot in Eugene. I miss living nearby. Fantastic coffee and pastries. It's almost always packed with a line out the door but the staff get things moving quickly. Cooked food from the kitchen does take a while to come out though, so don't expect a grab and go experience. Very kid friendly with a spread out seating area outside and a sandbox that is open during good weather.

Yelp
Overall, great atmosphere! Food is a little eh though. It was packed today, and a little below freezing. The line was moderate in speed, so we didn't have to stand outside too long before we could get inside to place our order. The woman at the register was very sweet and explained where to pick up the drinks and where to go inside with our number. I ordered a basic breakfast, with fried egg, add bacon and my friend ordered chilaquiles. As a sweet, I ordered a carrot cupcake, and she ordered a chocolate croissant. For drinks, we ordered 16oz hot chocolate and latte. The total for that, without tip, was $39. The drinks were piping hot, which on a really cold day, was a godsend. We headed inside, where there were two fireplaces, and got situated. The food took about 40 minutes, and we got our cutlery and dug in. My friend LOVED her chilaquiles and said it was awesome. The basic breakfast I ordered was missing the bacon, which was an extra $2. It took a while to get the food, so we decided not to bother with trying to find someone to fix that. The potato's were a bit lukewarm, so I think the plate maybe had been sitting for a while. Otherwise, it was good. Overall, the basic breakfast was underwhelming, but knowing the chilaquiles was good balanced the review out. The atmosphere inside was really what made this place special, it was warm and cozy. The fireplaces were nice, and the space was inviting. Everyone, including the customers, were nice, so it was a good experience despite the mishap with one of the orders.

Yelp
Hideaway Bakery is my go-to spot on rainy days for a comforting meal, a cozy drink while I work, or a pastry to enjoy by the fire while I read. There's plenty of seating, both inside and outside, so you're almost always guaranteed a spot. While I've only visited during rainy weather to enjoy the warm fire, the outdoor seating looks equally inviting and I imagine it's perfect in the warmer months. The coffee is good--I've had better in the area, but maybe I just haven't found the right one here yet. I'm a big fan of their paninis, especially the one with bacon, brie, apricot, arugula, and balsamic glaze--SO yummy! I always recommend it to anyone who loves the sweet-and-savory combo. Their soup changes regularly, but the mushroom soup is absolutely fantastic. I can't wait to have it again! If you go during rush hour, expect to wait a little, but it's definitely worth it!

Yelp
Great food cooked to order. Clean, open, covered, dog friendly patio. The bakery has both gluten and gluten-free options (and a few vegan ones). Really friendly staff. What more could you ask for!

Yelp
The Best Coffee Shop In Eugene. Wow, can't say enough good things about this shop, the best pastries, latte, and people! Must go!

Yelp
Located in the same parking lot as Mazzi's, you can also inside where it is warm, and the fireplace is making it cozy, or outside at the picnic table. Awesome coffee and pastries with the best cafe staff on earth. Friendly, and warm, make you happy that you came in. This is a really great place to come by yourself, meet a friend, have a meeting and a few people were working remotely. All around great neighborhood hang out spot. Check it out!

Yelp
How does this one-of-a-kind bakery not get a 5 star rating? After visiting back in February this is July and I still cannot stop thinking about this place. Throw in cooked brunches on their menu--which you can enjoy at indoor or outdoor tables (with a fireplace in the interior part) in addition to the exquisite selection of baked breads and inventive rolls. People of Eugene don't know how good they have it. Traveling here from Los Angeles I lamented there was no equivalent bakery with the finesse/sophistication in the sprawling LA metro area (I'm over the standard Mexican bakeries, they're the same old things repeated.) At Hideaway the rolls and croissants were inventive, caught my eye for playful flavors, and tasted superlative. The coffee was complex and delicious. The brunch was absolutely delicious with good quality vegetables, flavorful cooking, subtly done eggs. YUM. Go here and don't regret missing out on one of the West Coast's top five bakeries ( in my humble estimation). Extra brownie points for the staff not putting on posh affectations despite their sophisticated menu. This place is down-to-earth and exciting, both.

Yelp
The first time I came here was with friends, and there was a food-trailer on the back-side of the seating area and you ordered at the same spot for food & coffee but they came out in different areas. So, I'm glad I had friends there to help guide us! That might have been a summer-thing or they re-shifted their kitchen but either way it is different now. But, regardless the food is just as delicious! Their actual food items are delicious. And, their baked goods are amazing! I also have tried many different of their coffee drinks. It is a unique spot off of AMazon Parkway, I recommend checking it out!

Yelp
I just found this lovely spot and will be going back! Wonderful selection of bakery treats. What I loved the most, their gluten free options! Going to a bakery, I always "assume" I won't be able to eat anything!! Nope, not here they love their gluten free friends! I had a cranberry orange gluten free muffin so good! Their coffee and drink selection, wow impressive! I had a honey cardamom latte, yum. Considering I am typically an Americano fan! They have both outdoor patio sitting with heaters and indoor. This place was busy but loved the experience. A new spot I'll be frequenting.

Yelp
When I was still at UO I would schedule my entire week around when I could get my next BLET cause it was the absolute best breakfast in town. Not only is it made fresh with the in-house bread, the price and portion cannot be beat. The entire menu is absolutely stacked, as well as having some of the best coffee pastries and bread in town. Although the wait time is usually pretty significant, they now have a dependable online ordering service so you can time what you want from the kitchen, which is always going to be separate and much longer than anything from the counter. The parking lot is a bit tight, but there's also lots of other available areas.

Yelp
I went here with my friend last weekend. After waiting an hour for my food I walked up to the counter to ask about my order. The woman there was so upset I had even asked and proceeded to very harshly tell me it was coming. She was so sarcastic and rude I actually teared up. As I sat back down I waiting another 20 minutes until my friends went up to ask again about my order. She was met with sarcasm and eye rolls as well. Love the food, horrible and rude staff.

Yelp
Quintessential Eugene - highly recommend (don't forget to get a baked good!). Service was a little slow (about half hour) but was delicious nonetheless! VERY friendly and welcoming staff

Yelp
I enjoyed coming to Hideaway bakery! I love the ambiance of this spot. Awesome outdoor seating and picnic tables in the sun. Also some indoor seating as well. Wide selection of breads, pastries, and desserts. I really enjoyed the coffee here too. They have a breakfast and lunch menu. Does get crowded on weekends. Would recommend.

Yelp
I've always loved Hideaway Bakery, but I was very disappointed with the service today. I arrived around 11:40 and placed my order no later than 11:45. However, I didn't receive my food until 12:45--an entire hour later. I had ordered a bacon, egg, and cheese croissant, and when it finally arrived, it was cold. To make matters worse, my friend, who was still waiting for her order after I received mine, asked the staff politely if they knew when her food would be ready. Instead of offering any helpful information, they responded rudely, simply telling her to wait and that it would be out "when it's out." This experience was far from the high standards I've come to expect from Hideaway Bakery. They were also out of napkins, plates, and and ketchup.

Yelp
Really good but their stuff takes forever I ordered a CUP of soup and it took 40 mins to come out

Yelp
Such a sad experience :( really rude and crazy wait times for really bad food. Really disappointing

Yelp
Waited over half an hour for toast to go. Inquired about the order multiple times. If you don't value your time, this is the place to go.

Yelp
Back here again and just thinking to myself, I love Hideaway, I love Hideaway, I love Hideaway... *shouts from the rooftop* I LOVE HIDEAWAY!
google avatar

Lori S.

Yelp
My mother always sings their praises, but I'm rarely on this side of town... until lately. I've been checking in on an aging friend of mine regularly now and part of that is making sure they get more sustenance than what "meals-on-wheels" delivers. *MOW is certainly a blessing and a big shout out to all the volunteers who make it happen!* When my dear friend asked for homemade spaghetti and sourdough, I got to cooking. I was going to swing by Great Harvest, but we were closer to Hideaway. I took a $10bill w me and was shocked to find the seeded sourdough was $11. I fished through my pockets and came up with enough to make the purchase. This is a gigantic loaf of bread... weighty, rustic, crusty, yet squeezable... delicious! We're on our third day of slicing off pieces to drizzle w olive oil and grill in a cast iron skillet. It hasn't dried out or hardened yet... at all... it's still as palatable as it was he day it was baked. This is most definitely a substantial loaf of bread worthy of coming back for. I appreciated the written message to customers posted at the register, explaining the increase in pricing due to inflated costs of organic flour and the like. They expressed their desire to keep their doors open while navigating the rising costs of doing business post-COVID. This message meant a lot to me and explained what I didn't even realize I was curious about. Thank you. I also had to smile at the bread-makers silly conversations with one another while I stood in line. It's wonderful to encounter someone enjoying their job these days. I will be back... with a little more cash in my pocket next time.

Deborah H.

Yelp
Yummy cranberry, golden raisin vegan scone. Really nice honey cardamom latte. Nice vibe & outdoor seating. Helpful service. Truly a hidden gem.

Oregon G.

Yelp
One of Eugene's great bakeries, Hideaway makes fat loaves to take home and use for sandwiches or just by itself, fruit filled pastries among the best I have ever had. It served a limited breakfast and lunch menu and meat filled hand sandwiches. It is always busy. Food is very fresh and delicious. Most is takeout, but there is covered patio space as well. I divide their huge sweet rolls into quarters and reheat them for sweet treats over several days. So good.
google avatar

Yelp
This place has fallen hard. Quality of my pastries yesterday were just bad. Service isn't really something employees care about, apathy is the word of the day. My family from out of town ordered breakfast on line paid for it only to call and see when might be good to pickup to be told "oh sorry they're closed ". I can't recommend this place any longer, pains me to say it's a shat show. One star would've been cruel.

Yelp
Hideaway is a beautiful addition to the already beautiful Mazzy's Italian Restaurant!! I absolutely love location and charm of it!Im a former South Eugenian and I spent a lot of time there on the Amazon Parkway bc there's so much available there! Hideaway has very delicious wood fired bread and pizza just like old- county Italian Style! They've a wonderful variety of pastries and espresso drinks and for the wine lover's, they has an extensive list for them to choose from!I love the variety of potted plants /flowers and herbs back in the patio area. The location of the property has a beautiful rustic and coun

Yelp
Everything is delicious! In our group we tried breakfast foods, a salad, and panini. Terrific.

Yelp
Very popular spot, so the line will probably be long, but it's totally worth it. Everything we had was delicious.

Yelp
I used to love this place. Go, and get in line, order your food, sit inside or out and enjoy it. Now they have a food cart outside, using all those non-recyclable goodies to eat your food. Inside sells pastries only or frozen take home , it's just not the same And, their bread prices have skyrocketed! Needless to say, I am not a happy camper.

Yelp
I wish to offer feedback specifically on my and my partner's most recent Hideaway experience earlier today. Initially I looked for a contact link via the website, to no avail, and then I tried calling Hideaway's number during business hours only to receive a voice message recording stating that the mailbox is full and ending with "Are you still there? Goodbye!" before hanging up. Quite strange. So anyway, I had driven to Hideaway for carryout pastries that we looked forward to enjoying at home with coffee. I opted for a turkey/rosemary/cheese croissant, a ham and cheese croissant, an apple turnover, and a potato donut. The first time I ever tried a Hideaway potato donut years ago at the Farmer's Market, what a treat! However, over the years it seems the potato donut has been hit or miss, sometimes too hard and dry. Today unfortunately was the worst as both the potato donut and the potato donut holes that were offered complimentary "because (they had) so many" were not only hard and dry but tasted and smelled burnt. One of the donut holes had a pale area where it had not submerged completely in the hot oil and that small part was tender and tasted good. If only the entire donut hole had been of the same caliber, or better yet the entire batch. This issue is specifically what I hoped to bring to Hideaway's attention when I searched for a contact form on the website and attempted reaching them by phone. Given neither route worked, I am going through this channel in hopes the feedback reaches the powers that be, proves useful, and leads to taking the donuts out earlier. I cannot help but to wonder if I was offered free donut holes because they knew the donuts were overcooked and wanted to get rid of them rather than wasting them. Sadly they wound up in our yard waste/compost container after a few unhappy bites. For the record and in the interest of full disclosure, the apple turnover was nice albeit a bit doughy and the savory croissants were delicious. We are grateful for the partial win.

Yelp
I love hideaway bakery and come here with friends and by myself to do homework all the time. The food and coffee is amazing. Customer service needs some help, as one worker in particular was rude and made me feel uncomfortable.

Wintertime O.

Yelp
Would give 0 stars if I could. Waited 30+ minutes for ONE croissant. It's the morning and people have places to be. When we walked in, the cashier was busy having side conversations with customers instead of taking orders and we had to cancel our order and leave hungry due to the insane wait time.
google avatar

Kambria G.

Yelp
Great selection of sourdoughs. I love how everything is organic and they don't add yeast.
google avatar

Klara K.

Yelp
Everything in this place is top notch. The bread is our weekly treat. Absolutely perfect and healthy. Having lived in Italy I can tell you this is the real deal. Wonderful smells and ambiance in this tiny bakery. Love the huge woodfire oven. Super friendly and helpful staff

Yelp
Was only in town a few nights but came back twice! Top notch spot. Line can be long but they do a good job with organization and it moves pretty quickly. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Hideaway is amazing. I really love the food, their pastries are tasty and are at a reasonable price, and everyone is very friendly. Coffee isn't too bad either! Come here on a Saturday morning and you'll truly feel the South Eugene community vibe.
google avatar

Yelp
Super cute little spot with lovely outdoor seating. House made strawberry lemonade was refreshing. Both the chocolate mousse cupcake and the lemon tea cake were perfectly delectable. Interested in coming back on another day to try their menu which they serve until 2pm. Great spot for a cute lil day date.

Yelp
Fun bakery nestled in south Eugene. their vessels are great, warmed up and enjoyed with their coffee

Yelp
I met up with a friend here and tried it for the first time yesterday - it was such a good find! The atmosphere inside is very cozy. It looks like there are lots of delicious breads and foods (that I need to go back and try!) The service was quick and relatively friendly. As for food, my croissant was the flakiest, richest, most flavorful croissant I've ever had! It tasted very high quality to me. The ratio of cheese to ham was small, but, the high quality of the croissant makes up for it. Overall, I would definitely go back and try more treats! (Though I believe the treats are slightly on the more expensive side, for me at least).
google avatar

Ellessa H.

Yelp
I'm so very impressed with the selection this cute little shop has! As someone trying to be vegan I didnt have to go without (not usually the case!) they had super yummy breakfast vegan desserts and delicious pastries. Not to mention the staff is so friendly, kind and attentive. When we had something wrong with our order they were quick to fix it with kindness and speed. I really enjoyed the outside setting which is so cute but the inside is also inviting and cozy. Would most definitely recommend!

Emma C.

Yelp
I LOVE HIDEAWAY BAKERY!! Went for lunch and had a wrap and cookie-- both so fresh and delicious. Great outdoor seating and laid back atmosphere. Kind staff and nice reprieve from UO campus. Would go again to try other yummy pastries and food.

Roen H.

Yelp
Amazing! Had the gluten-free chocolate zucchini bread... and I literally couldn't tell there wasn't gluten. My boyfriend got there croissant, he's a croissant pro... and was a happy camper! Coffees yummy too!! The environment is adorable and the outdoor heaters are toasty

Katherine M.

Yelp
Grabbed pastries and lattes this morning. All were excellent. Pastries were light and crispy full of flavor and not overly sweet. Lattes were perfect. Lots of interesting flavor combinations and also not too sweet. Service was quick and d efficient and kind. Didn't eat in.

Nishant N.

Yelp
We came to know about the Hideaway bakery from one of the blogs about Eugene so we decided to have morning breakfast at Hideaway Bakery. For the breakfast we ordered Black Tea, Croissant, Banana and Plum Bread and Vessel. It is a small bakery which provides you with different options of breads as well as breakfasts. The Croissant as well as Vessel and Plum bread were amazing and tasty and one of the best we ever had. The staff is also friendly and helped us in providing us the best options. Amazing bakery do try out when you are in Eugene.

Wella A.

Yelp
I still come here after all these years, and even though I have returned to eating food with gluten, I don't care much for their bread nor pastries here. They're too dense. The croissants and vessels are too bread-like. However, it's a great place to hang out; they have a great outdoor patio with heaters, and the self serve World Blend drip coffee is decent (I like darker roasts, and the other drip they've got was too acidic for me). A couple of pastries I do enjoy are the Orange Cardamom Pinwheel, and the Hazelnut Pinwheel, though I prefer the Orange Cardamom more since it's got wonderful spice and I enjoy the citrus scent. It's also surprisingly lighter and more buttery than the croissant (which I don't recommend from here, unless heavy, thick, bread croissants are your thing). Plus, they're open at 7a and I'm a morning person.

Archie A.

Yelp
I wanted a croissant- got one. It was ok...just kidding it was amazing! Crunchy on the outside layers on the inside.
google avatar

Jasmine E.

Yelp
I love this bakery I stop by everytime I'm in this side of town! The spicy Chai is delicious, and -right now (fall 2021)- they have a Harissa sweet potato hash (I did tofu sub) that is out of this world! Omg it is so good, caramelized onions, crispy sweet potato chunks, seared bell peppers harissa sauce and well seasoned tofu!! You need to try this, I can't speak on behalf of the eggs but I Bet that would be good if you like those. Yum yum also if you happen to get there when there is a cinnamon roll, grab it, they are the best in town !!! The only thing I didn't like was the gluten free coffee cake muffin :( not sweet not flavored... :( we can't win them all...
google avatar

Rachel B.

Yelp
It's ok. Amazing seating keeps me coming back. 11 dollar loaves of bread are ridiculous, though delicious, and the pastries aren't great either for the price. The worst food! I waited 45 min for a truly awful breakfast...rubbery cold eggs, boiled breakfast potatoes and an extra hard slice of cold toast. I said it was the worst food I've had in years and it really was. A few weeks prior I had a croissant sandwich that was fresh and heavenly so it's hot or miss here, more miss to be honest. I'm also not a fan of the 2 coffee blends they always serve, they taste metallic and never a nice, smooth cup. It's a bummer, this place could be so much better. They also can't even retain staff for long which is concerning.
google avatar

Jasmine B.

Yelp
One of my absolute favorite places to get a warm drink, or a baked good and sit outside with friends, or sit indoors and read/journal. I will always love it here. They have plenty of gluten-free and vegan baked goods and their menu is also delicious. Such a cute little place that I've been going to for years.

Lanette S.

Yelp
The food is decent. The service is, however , really bad. Our items came out all separately and 20 minutes apart, and they refused to acknowledge you with anything other than annoyance at best, and with the service window being shut in your face. My daughter could have well been done before I ever received my items. I understand that it can get busy, but a little acknowledgment and courtesy go a long way. Gave this place two chances. No more.

Becky M.

Yelp
So sad to see this place go the way it has. Service is pretty much not there, the food quality has really gone down and the old issue of waiting for ever for your eat in order is back - on paper half take out cartons instead of plates, no silverware and not even a napkin with the food which tastes nothing like the Hideaway of old. So disappointed. Won't be back. But apparently it won't matter because the place is so packed with the college crowd they won't notice as the old locals fall away...
