Hideaway Cafe - Review - Pacoima - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"At Hideaway Cafe (also known as Cafe Escondido), you’ll spend as much time gazing at plants you can’t identify as you will eating. This fully outdoor restaurant in Sylmar is open only on weekends (it operates as an actual nursery during the week), with tables surrounded by vines, lizards darting around, and rows of succulents and leaves. Everything is cooked over a woodfire grill in the open kitchen, which gives the meats in the tacos, quesadillas, and burritos a nice char. Some of the food can be slightly underseasoned, so stick to the al pastor or birria for the most flavor." - Cathy Park

This place is a hidden gem. The ambiance is amazing. It almost feels like your on vacation and not in L.A. They are open on the weekend and not permanently closed as some people have claimed on Yelp. The food is very good... cooked over a wood burning grill. The smell of the wood burning and the food cooking is amazingl The service is good and everyone is very laid back and relaxed. I met some other customers who are regulars and they all were very nice. Give them a try... you won't regret it. Enjoy!

A Hidden Gem in the Garden! 🌿✨ I absolutely love this café—it’s nestled in a beautiful garden surrounded by nature, making it such a refreshing place to dine. There are plenty of plants, and the atmosphere is so peaceful. The food is incredibly fresh since everything is cooked to order. The staff are friendly and attentive, adding to the overall warm experience. The ambiance is perfect, and the way they present the food and tableware is thoughtful and unique. It’s a fresh take on Mexican cuisine, and I highly recommend this hidden gem! 🌮🌿💛

This gem was transplanted from Mexico. I love how they nestled a small menu cafe inside a lush plant nursery. The friendliness of the staff is unparalleled. We parked our RV and a gardener said he’d watch over it. Great servers. I found the ceramic mugs so charming that when we were all finished, I asked if any were for sale. She said no, but gave me three!!! What a wonderful place.

Come early and sit near the grill and outdoor kitchen. Smell the wood fire and hear pot lids gently rattle over knives dicing the onions and tomatoes. Sun filters through the verdant setting and feel sensorially immersed before an authentic plate of Mexican cuisine. The experience pairs well with a nearby canyon hike, or horseback ride around the Tujunga wash.

Absolutely magical 💖 25 years of being a nursery has made an absolute hidden gem. With an outdoor kitchen built for his daughter's dream, this little Cafe transports you to anywhere but Los Angeles 😅 The menu includes homemade everything. Tacos, Menudo, rice beans and the best sauces around, it's worth the local trip.

I hate giving bad reviews but I am truly shocked with the way they handled customer complaints. When our food came, they forgot to place my order, since I was on a time crunch, I asked for it to go. When I arrived home, (over an hour away) I realized my order was wrong. They told me to text the number about my situation and “we’ll see what happens” when I asked when I would get a response they said the owner isn’t here and “I am so busy so I can’t really help” this was all through TEXT by the way and when I called I got no response. They wanted me to bring the plate all the way there in order to get my refund. Then they offered to pay for an uber, which would cost more than the refund by the way!! I kindly asked them to send the plate to a friend near by but they were adamant about needing the plate to get a refund. I also ordered 2 pan dulces and was patiently waiting for them. When I asked, she said they were out. Fine but why didn’t you tell me that when I ordered??? I simply wanted a refund for the plate THEY made a mistake on and still haven’t been able to resolve anything.

"I visited this restaurant a few years ago and had a much better experience, so I was excited to hear they were back in business. The location itself looks fantastic, creating a great first impression and raising expectations for the food and menu. Unfortunately, that's where the positives ended. The chilakiles portion was shockingly small and resembled fast food quality, while the barbacoa was overwhelmingly salty. Even the aguas frescas came in a small 16oz cup. The quesadillas were incredibly basic, seemingly made with store-bought tortillas. To top it off, the service was incredibly slow. We waited a staggering 1 hour and 8 minutes for our food to arrive. During this time, we witnessed several other customers leaving due to the long wait and, from what we could gather, similar dissatisfaction with the food. Adding to the unpleasant atmosphere was a poorly functioning kitchen hood, which filled the entire space with smoke, causing eye irritation and a lingering bad smell. For a total bill of around $110 for three orders and one simple quesadilla, the value was abysmal. Honestly, you can find far better and more satisfying food at a local food truck. It's disappointing that a place with such visual appeal failed so miserably in terms of food quality, portion sizes, service, and overall atmosphere. I won't be returning."
