Café Escondido is a magical escape into a secret rainforest. If he was still around, it would have the potential to be in Jonathan Gold’s list of top restaurants in LA.
So why the 3 stars?
I’ve only been here once.
It wasn’t a crowded day, and we were before the lunch rush.
We ordered food and waited. And waited. And waited. After flagging down the waiter twice, we finally got chips and salsa 35 minutes after ordering (the chips are made fresh, but still….). And after flagging him down again, 15 minutes later he said “oh I thought you already had your food, let me check.”
We did not have our food. He pulled up our order on his iPad and the order was still not in the kitchen.
After more than an hour, we finally received our food and the order was wrong.
The coffee is amazing.
The salsa is to die for and adds a beautiful smokiness to everything it touches.
That’s why we’ll be back.
But the service needs improvement—there was another family there who was refunded bc one of their meals never showed up.
