Best Vietnamese Food Dorchester Boston | Eater Boston

"The bun tom nuong bi is the move at Hien Vuong. Vermicelli noodles come served with various vegetables, charbroiled shrimp, and shredded pork. This Dorchester Avenue spot also serves up a seriously good bowl of pho." - Terrence Doyle

Located in City Market. The food was delish. It came out very hot as you can see from the pic (steaming). The only thing for me was the price. The price from the menu must not be accurate. Idk how my two dishes pictured was a $60 check.

We stopped in while at river market this weekend and enjoyed it. The people there are warm and helpful. It was quiet, quaint, and the food was good. When we needed containers, the lady there packed it all away and bagged it for us.

My mom has been going to Hien Vuong for 27 years. It’s owned by the same people. I’m 21 years old, and we don’t live out here anymore. We drove the 5 hours back out to KC today and had to stop by. I loved it again like I always do. #2, #71, and #75 are menu staples for us because we’re pescatarians. Common complaints about this place are that the service isn’t peppy and they charge auto gratuity of a mere 15%. These people work hard and take pride in their food. It’s a pleasure to know them and their craft. I think people pass judgement on them sometimes because they don’t falsely inflate their mood for tips. If you’re looking at this review to figure out whether you want to go eat here- just go ahead and plug the address into your GPS. When you go up to pay, ask about the grandchildren photos and you can see the owner light up. This is a ramble and a half, but Ive stood by Hien Vuong for 21 years. I think everybody should try them at least once.

First It was our first time inside it looks alright not very clean . Second we had to wait over 30 minutes to get the food the lady who helped was very rude and unprofessional and lastly the food is not what it should be . The meat was old and also one of the plates was dirty from the bottom . I would not recommend sadly . Also prices are not what they have on the menu

Unfortunately, probably one of the worst pho places I've had in the area. Portions are small and overpriced. My regular size bowl was small. Their large size pho is as big as a regular size at other pho places. A 3 eggroll appetizer was $8.99. Spent $60 on just 2 pho bowls and 2 appetizers. The elderly lady (probably owner) that took our order told us she is going to automatically add 15% tip on our order. Um, okay. First time here and most likely my last.

It was great to fing out that Hien Vuong Restaurant have vegan options. The veggie broth for the Pho was amazing, the Bun as very tasty, and the tofu on both dishes was great. I forgot to take a picture because it looked so good that I dove right in😋

Google
Portion sizes were smaller than what I anticipated from other pho places I’ve been to, however pho broth was super tasty! Deep fried shrimp was good however totally thought they were going to be the skewered shrimp for the price and description of it! Still the shrimp were crunchy and sauce was good!

Unfortunately, very disappointed with the experience. My main criticism is how salty ALL the dishes were (both soups and noodle ones). Honestly, at times it was almost inedible it was SO salty. You always expect a little extra salt when you get food out in places but this was just unpleasant. My second criticism was that you barely get any of the “proteins” in your dishes. Someone in our table got the dumpling and pork soup and it came with ONE dumpling; one! And two others got shrimp dishes that came with one/two shrimps, respectively. You’re not paying cheap either, dishes run between $10-12 - you should absolutely be getting a bit more bang for your buck. It feels a bit like we’re being ripped off if I’m being honest - and as a customer, it’s a pretty miserable feeling.

Yelp
Just really good, no BS, authentic Viet food. You can tell it's all made fresh to order. I grew up eating Viet food and this did not disappoint

Yelp
Excellent fresh food. I had the #61. It is super good. Attentive service and quick food delivery. This is a great place to eat!

Yelp
I was in the mood for Pho when I entered; but seeing the Tomato and Pineapple Soup on the menu, I decided to try something new and unique. I ordered it with a chicken broth base and egg noodles. The large bowl was served without a plate of add-ins like pho has and the main ingredients were cauliflower and broccoli. A fine bowl of soup, but not enough "wow" for a repeat order. My Cafe Sua Da was served traditional style, not premade like some places are doing. Excellent and bold! A few things stand out that keep Hien Vuong from getting 4 stars: My lady server insisted on telling me how to create and drink my beverage. I found it a bit condescending. There were no condiments on the table after I was served my meal, I had to get up and go to another table to retrieve soy, sriracha, hoison. Not a big deal but my server just watched from another table that she went and sat at, while not offering any assistance or sympathy. When paying my tab at the register, I was given a receipt and told, "write down your tip here". Very awkward, a better system needs to be created. The place is small and in very old City Market stall, yet that is no excuse for it's run down appearance. The space really needs a deep clean and a reset. With 3 other Vietnamese restaurants in the surrounding blocks, I would probably not return here.

Yelp
Cute little spot! Came in for lunch a couple of days ago. I ordered chicken pho and a lemonade. Lemonade took a while to come out but was so good and fresh. The pho came out soon after and was very bland looking. HOWEVER, I took a sip of the broth and it was very good! Decorated my meal with the toppings they provide and added sauce and it got some color. Overall, good meal. Convenient location. Nothing extraordinary.

Yelp
After an educational experience at the nearby Arabian steamboat museum, I literally stumbled upon this Vietnamese restaurant while looking for a Starbucks. There is a Farmer's Market / City market here, which also is home to a Vietnamese restaurant called Hien Vuong. I was hungry and it was past 2:30pm on a Wednesday afternoon. I thought Pho seemed to be the thing to have after a nice vacay in metro Kansas City before traveling to Des Moines, IA the next morning. With that said, City market seemed deserted especially on a weekday afternoon. I entered Hien Vuong Vietnamese restaurant and there was nobody dining presently. I guess I had basically beat the lunch rush and got the place all to myself. I got a table next to the corner of the restaurant, which is pretty small. There was about 6 tables, I think and the ambiance felt like I was in someone's home turned into a restaurant. What stuck out in my experience here at Hien Vuong Vietnamese restaurant was that when I was in the middle of eating, a guy came into the restaurant and asked the owner whether or not they were looking for any job openings. I'm not sure if she was frightened or just didn't know what he said. She kind of shook her head and he left after that. My experience here lasted about 45 minutes and I ordered the shrimp summer rolls and a large bowl of Pho Dac Biet. The usual for me. The overall experience here at Hien Vuong Vietnamese restaurant was quite interesting, homespun, and lack of Air conditioning. You could feel the heat on you really and the outside wasn't hot. Just humid inside and the temps were in the mid 50 F outside that afternoon. The service was nice and friendly. The owner made small talk with me when I finished and paid the bill. Somehow, she knew I was visiting from out of town or something. The ambiance was quiet and interesting, but still a good time having Vietnamese fare while on vacation. The prices here was fair and usually on par with what I normally see out there anyway. For the most part though, the experience here at Hien Vuong Vietnamese restaurant could have been better, especially with the air conditioning aspect, but it is what it is. I definitely beat the lunch rush so it wasn't crowded at all. Score one for me, I guess. The summer rolls were particularly good Since it was made to order. The Pho itself was good and okay, although decent, maybe should have ordered with extra noodles on the side. It was a nice meal with water to drink. I wonder if I had alcohol with my Pho, would it get incrementally better? That's another story and another restaurant experience for another day. If you are in the area and want your Pho fix, consider coming here and check things out. The Pho was good and delicious, although the portions could have been scantly better. They gave little vegetables and I do love basil in the broth. Hien Vuong Vietnamese restaurant is located at 417 Main Street in the heart of urban Kansas City, Missouri. They accept major credit cards, as well as cash. The restaurant is part of a farmers market vibe, so it makes sense to come here when they have a good amount of foot traffic. I guess I came along afterwards but i still dig the quiet ambiance. As far as parking goes, there's plenty of parking here for those who need them. Not sure if it's a private parking lot that you'd need to pay, but it's parking for anyone and everyone who wishes to park here for the area restaurants and the farmers market. If you are familiar with the KC bus system, consider the routes you need to come here to Hien Vuong Vietnamese restaurant. If you are like me, Uber and Lyft while on vacation is always a good thing and a godsend in my line of lifestyle. However, if that Pho craving is so strong and you're visiting Kansas City, you can check this place out just to be sure you can secure that taste of the broth that day or be wishing you did the next morning. I know i had that feeling before. Go and get some! Pho is where the heart is. 4.0 stars for the overall experience. 3.0 stars for the ambiance, but 4.0 stars for the service and the food. 3.0 stars for the prices. 5.0 stars for the location. Support local! B

Yelp
I came to visit KC's market for the first time in my life, and I was really hungry. One bowl of pho filled me up. Although it's summer, I'm glad I ate a huge hot bowl of soup here. It was phenomenal. It was out quick and the lady was very kind!

Uneven H.

Yelp
Interesting. So I've been going to this place on and off for 20? Years. Nothing has really struck out. Seems decent and can't really complain. Today is a different story. Extremely rude service. Very unfriendly. And they forced me to pay a gratuity. Not sure how these guys became so bitter but they want to extend zero effort towards customer service. Plus the pho is not bad but very bland. And they over cooked the noodles.

Yelp
This is a continuation of my mission to eat at a new place every week or so, even though this is an old eats. When I first came to Kansas City and didn't know anyone, this was the first place I went to. It has some good memories for me, but I hadn't been here since 2008. It happened to be the first time in a year or so since I had been to River market and I decided to pop into this legacy place. The restaurant had not changed since I had first been here and it is still a hole in the wall place, which I tended to like. I ordered the large Beef and Tendon pho and my meal came out to about $13 with tip. The good thing about this place was the broth, it is pretty good, if a bit salty. The rest of the pho was sorely lacking. The noodles were limp and felt old, as did some of veggies like the coriader and basil. The meat was lacking, coming in little bits, rather than slices and I found maybe one piece of tendon. I often get this cozy feeling after eating Pho, as it is my comfort food but with this place, I felt....empty. It was a strange feeling and I was sadly letdown by the first place I had every been to in KC. Vietnamese food is competitive market here in KC and there are many quality places you can go to. Unfortunately, some places do well with the quality of food and some do well with their location. I would say that if this place didn't have the River market location, it would have folded a while ago, cause it doesn't excel with the food.

Yelp
The service was absolutely slow and the wait staff ordered items for us that we did not want!! There is NO BATHROOM INSIDE and the waitress DEMANDED A TIP!!!! Wt holy moly?!

Yelp
Cozy Vietnamese restaurant in the middle of River Market area. This is definitely a family-ran mom and pop shop. I was away on a trip and was craving a nice cozy bowl of pho and strong Vietnamese coffee. Would come back again. It was designed really nice inside as well.

Yelp
I don't know why this place doesn't have a higher rating. I find it to be very good and I like the quaint atmosphere. The spring rolls were some of the best I've had in town, and I enjoyed their sauce. I ordered a veggie dish with egg noodles and tofu. The tofu was prepared well & while I'm not convinced they were actually egg noodles, they had a unique and delicious flavor I have not experienced before. The veggies were also crisp and very fresh. I love when there is still a crunch to the vegetables. Their homemade sauces are pretty yum too. The only down side is that I developed the start of a migraine about 15-20 minutes after the meal, which I fear may be the result of MSG and I know while it is natural, some will also add it to ingredients/dishes. So I guess it's a crap shoot if I'll be back, but I did still want to sing their praises!

Yelp
I have meals here a few times. I like its environment, location, and its noodle soups, particularly its dumpling BBQ soups.

Yelp
I've been here twice thinking that my experience would be different each time. But during and after my meal, I can't help but think I did this to myself. There are so many good or better Vietnamese restaurants in a .5 mile radius in the Rivermarket so I have no idea why I would ever choose to eat here. There are SO many items on the menu. There is no way a restaurant can be good at ALL those items. I ordered the Spicy Beef Noodle Soup. It looked like they used the Pho broth, noodles, beef and sprinkled a Spicy Beef flavoring packet into it. There was barely any meat or noodles in it. To top it off, I paid $10 + $2 tip. That's $12 for a minuscule bowl of soup that tastes nothing like it should. As much as I love supporting local Vietnamese restaurants, I can't recommend this place to anyone. I take that back, you might like this place if you prefer a more American twist on Vietnamese cuisine, kind of like a generic Chinese takeout place. If you're looking for the real thing, keep driving.

Yelp
I love Vietnamese food but I came here with an open mind since I was told that this was one of the best Vietnamese food places in the area. I loved the traditional feel of the place, the ma and pop atmosphere and that it was packed when we came in for lunch. The menu was insane in that it had so many options, maybe too many for a Vietnamese restaurant. My friend ordered pho and I ordered some spicy beef soup. The pho had great flavors but the portions were so small for the price paid. My friend had ordered a large and it barely had an noodles or beef. we were asked if we wanted t upgrade to combo beef but we ended up just going with the beef slices in soup. We also ordered egg rolls but they were the wrong egg roll skin. Instead of spring rolls skin which is smooth and thing and crispy, they used the Chinese egg roll skin which when friend was thick and bumpy which we didn't care for. I've had a lot of summer rolls and this was not the typical Vietnamese summer roll. Overall, I wasn't impressed and will continue to hunt for a better Vietnamese restaurant.

Yelp
Food is mediocre. Service is eh. We ordered a rice and noodle dish with waters, The waitress forced us to give 20% tip - I'm all for tipping but she charged her own tip and when I tried to correct to 15% she embarrassingly demanded the 20%. It was just a little shocking and very rude the food wasn't great to begin with and she did was very forceful. Anywho the foods BLAH and the waitress is bold lol

Tiffany G.

Yelp
The service is great, cozy place with wonderful food. Never have had anything ordered I didn't love! Awesome environment for great conversation and friendly small get togethers.

Yelp
So we stopped in a few weeks ago to check this place out. Every time we go to the market, we always remark about how lovely this restaurant smells when we walk by. We'd already tried a few other places to eat in the Market that day, so we ended up splitting a snack. We ordered the Number 64 Beef and egg noodle. I must say, I'm picky about my cooked broccoli. Typically it is either way overcooked or still raw and crunchy. It was perfectly cooked here. The veggies in the dish were quite delicious. The beef however, was pretty salty. The broth too was quite salty. Overall, perfectly cooked but generally pretty salty, even for me. The staff was kind and professional. Food was timely, prices were fair. It is worth a try, undoubtedly!
google avatar

Yelp
This was a disappointing experience. The device was quite slow and pho was a bit average.

Yelp
I loved everything about this place. The only thing would be the staff. The lady that took our order was a bit dismissive. But the food was delicious, and the ambience, as well as the location, is great. I had the Bf Pho Soup. I would recommend getting one of the other soups, as this one only had the beef. But even still it was yummy I loved the spring rolls. I personally didn't like the dipping sauce, but my mother and sister did enjoy. I remember coming here with my grandmother a few years back, and not much has changed, in a good way. I enjoyed it back then, and I enjoyed it my last visit. I heard that there is Carry Out, but haven't ordered myself. Totally recommend.

Maddie D.

Yelp
My family has been coming to this restaurant since I was born. It's a family favorite. The food is always so fresh and delicious. I personally recommend the spring rolls, they are the best I've ever had!

Melanie V.

Yelp
Come here if you want good food and an extremely rude waitstaff. Food was fine, but the lady forgot to bring me a drink I ordered. after I pay for my food up at the register, I forgot to leave a tip because I paid at a separate place and there wasn't a tip jar. Immediately, the lady starts yelling at me for not leaving a tip. Now was it on me for forgetting the tip? Totally. But I don't expect to be berated into giving you one, especially with such subpar service. Take your business elsewhere.
google avatar

Kristen B.

Yelp
Spring Rolls were amazing....so close to Saigon 39.....but a little different (used mint instead of cilantro). And peanut sauce very good. "House vegetable" Dishes were okay but a little bland.
google avatar

Wedge N.

Yelp
Very clean. With fresh tasty ingredients. Not 4 or more stars due to portions being small and pho broth being bland. All ingredients were tasty but the large bowl have very few, very thin strips of meat. The shrimp/calamari rice noodle dish came with 3 shrimp (not big) and 2 pcs of calamari. I was amazed at the fresh cilantro and basil AND sprouts and the noodles ALL were sourced and presented with care. However the absence of what I'd say were fair proportions dings this place by a star.
google avatar

Betty C.

Yelp
Nice little place. We tried to joke around with the asian lady there but she wasn't having it lol. Egg rolls are really good though. And steaming hot! The noodles are great. It's filled to the top of the bowl. The noodles are a bitch thicker than other viet pho I've had (and I've had A LOT) but it's not a problem. Still tastes good! I also took a bite of the jalapeño and about died it was so spicy hahaha.
google avatar

Brittany S.

Yelp
I really love the Pho they make here. Its kind of an awkward walk and not very easy to find, its well hidden but totally worth it!! I come here with my boyfriend frequently when we are in the craving mood for some awesome Pho. The serving is so large, we easily split one large bowl of it!! So the price is fantastic. I give 4/5 stars because some of their other entrees are just ok. But their Pho is so spot on, we will ALWAYS return here.
google avatar

Sherika F.

Yelp
I've walked past this restaurant a few times during my visit in River Market. I finally decided to see stop by and try out their Vietnamese iced coffee. As soon as I walked through the doors, the entire restaurant filled with the good smelling Vietnamese food. If I didn't have lunch 30 mins prior, I would have stayed to try something from their menu. However, I bookmarked this place and will visit again.
google avatar

Jewel L.

Yelp
My friend has eaten there many times so she took me there expecting the same good food. She ordered her favorite meal, which comes with sheets of iceberg lettuce to make wraps. They gave her smaller pieces, and not enough. She asked for a little more. Other server comes over & says: that will be an extra charge. Really, for a few sheets of iceberg lettuce? Then my friend got sick right after lunch. Overall no.
google avatar

Breanne L.

Yelp
Food was amazing! Pho broth was so tasty, noodle cooked perfect. My husband ordered the chick fried rice and it really was good. I don't understand the bad reviews because the food was outstanding. Cute lil restaurant in the market place.
google avatar

Donna D.

Yelp
Cute little hole in the wall spot with great service. However, I was not impressed with the food at all. We ordered Vietnamese egg rolls and it was the thick Chinese style egg rolls, that tasted store bought .... Yuck. The seafood rangoons were too salty and greasy. Appetizers were definitely a miss, but we only ordered because we were hungry and waited 20 minutes for our pho. I cannot believe how small the "small bowl" was. I thought it was a kid size bowl and it was super shallow. But anyway, the broth had little to no flavor. And the noodles were still hard as if they weren't cooked long enough. I'm usually full 3/4 thru a real bowl of pho, but I was hungry right after. My mom is Vietnamese and wanted to go out and eat Vietnamese food while we were on vacation, she was not happy. Sadly, our whole party was disappointed.
google avatar

Ilene H.

Yelp
First time here and I liked their menu selection. So many things to choose from and admittedly I have never had Vietnamese food before; not authentic like this. I really liked my experience and the food was delicious. The service was good and the place gets packed quick. Come and bring your friends.

Mr T.

Yelp
This restaurant does not even practice social distance. The waitress/cashier was rude. Food was the worse of all the Vietnamese I ever ate. The waitress demand me to leave tip for her bad services and bad manner. I told the owner and they don't care and I will never return to the restaurant again. Ok
google avatar

Susan B.

Yelp
Nice little spot in River Market when most places were closed. The food was decent but it was just too hot to be in an open air place. We served ourselves as I waitress wasn't there. Still a large serving for the price and it tasted decent.
google avatar

Teena F.

Yelp
I was very disappointed with the food here. Hoping it would be authentic as possible, the foods certainly did not have any authenticity to it at all. Being in kc, its rare and hard to find good local Vietnamese restaurants anywhere! Stumbled upon this tiny spot inside the market area, so I thought I'd give it a try. The food was below mediocre and service wasn't very welcoming or friendly. Not to mention, the waitresses/waiters never stopped by to check on us. It's difficult to swallow that a small bowl of bland pho cost almost $8!!!!!

Brian K.

Yelp
I don't mind rude Asian aunties and lack of customer service, but the pho was flavorless and portion lacking.
google avatar

Bryan H.

Yelp
Stopped in since I was craving Pho for breakfast and my goto Vietnamese spot was closed for the weekend. I hadn't been here in over 10+ years since my last visit and was reminded of why. Service was not polite or inviting at all. I don't think they said a word to me when I ordered or paid for my food. The broth of the pho was bland and very clear almost looking like plain boiled water. I knew I made a mistake by coming here once I saw that. The noodles were thicker than I like in my Pho and could have cook for about a minute longer. I ordered the large bowl and the shallow serving dish didn't hold much food. Wasn't pleased and won't be going back.
google avatar

Eddie H.

Yelp
I just relocated back to KC and came here for lunch with my mom, something we've been doing since I was a kid so there's probably one extra point just for old time's sake. We ordered the same thing we do everything - #3 Banh Tom,#14 seafood soup with vermicelli and #21 seafood soup with egg noodles. Everything was still pretty tasty. Mom my thinks prices have gone up and portions, like the number of shrimp in the banh tom have gone down and there's a lot of competition nearby so this little place may have to step up it's game.

Kristina K.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious! I am a vegetarian and gluten free and this restaurant has so many options for me! I had one of the vegetarian salads and it included pickled cabbage and an assortment of fresh vegetables. It was absolutely amazing. I left very satisfied. The service was relatively good. It was very simple and not over the top. I think this place has a bad reputation due to expectations. Everyone wants something different. I recommend at least giving this place a chance because it just might surprise you!

Eryen N.

Yelp
Really unimpressive pho tai. Basically like 3 or 4 small slices of flavorless gray beef. Kind of a dingy restaurant.
google avatar

Gina J.

Yelp
The food was great (very fresh and full oud flavor) and the service was fantastic. Don't expect ambiance or upscale. Expect authentic food and authentic people with great service. Put it on your list of places to try at city market!
google avatar

Tony S.

Yelp
A lot of people go here for the pho but everything is fairly decent for the price I'll definitely say that. I do like their coffee drinks better than a few of the other restaurants around town for sure.

Yelp
I ate lunch here with my coworker and it wasn't busy at noon; however, it did fill up quick near 12:25ish. The place was small and maybe can fit less than 30 people (maybe). My coworker told me prior to coming here that they had some pho. Since I'm trying to add more to my Kansas City pho list (currently while writing this review I have just 1 place so I didn't bother making a Yelp list), I thought I try this place out. I ordered a regular pho tai for $5.49 and a large would be $6.49. My coworker ordered a rice plate that came with beef and pork but I don't remember the name of it. It wasn't long before our food came out. I was surprised by the size of my regular pho. It can be best described as small or tiny (at least for me). Immediately, I didn't think it was worth the $5.49. I tried the meat and it wasn't bad. However, the broth had an overwhelmingly strong taste. I think it had a lot to do with the fact that the bowl was tiny so the flavor was concentrated. The noodles didn't have flavor in them and it tasted like it was straight out of the box (if they did use it from a box because I can tell they don't make their own noodles). The broth's flavor wasn't soaked up in the noodles. That also might be why my pho came out super fast. I didn't want waste the food so I tried to fix my pho by adding hoisin sauce which helped some. I was still hungry when I finished my bowl. I've ate pho many times and this was the first time that I had pho in such a tiny bowl not to mention the flavor of the broth being too strong thanks to the size of the bowl. My coworker's rice plate tasted okay mainly because the rice was a little watered or not cooked properly; however, the meat was good but it doesn't make up for the rice being the way it was. If I had to take somebody who has never eaten pho before, then I would take them elsewhere. There was also a $10 minimum to use a credit card.

Yelp
I was craving for some hu tieu Nam Vang and this is one of the few places in town that has this dish, so I gave this a try with a few friends. The shop is small, but it was not very busy when we went around dinner time on a Thursday. I thought the service was very good, and the lady was also very friendly and helpful. The menu is very extensive, with about 10 pages. Two of us ordered the clear noodle soup (#14) and one of us ordered a steamed rice dish with grilled pork, egg cake, and a fried egg (I don't remember the item #). The soup came out pretty quickly, but the rice dish took a little bit longer. The clear noodle soup didn't look as appetizing as it normally would; it might have been because of the white broth or the lack of garnish. When I tasted the broth, it's pretty mildly flavored in my opinion. I added hoisin sauce to add more flavors, but it probably would have been better with some fish sauce instead. With some adjustments, the soup turned out pretty good! I'm a huge fan of clear noodles, because they're a little bit chewier than the usual pho noodles. However, with this noodle, sometimes it can get too clumpy or too chewy if not prepared right. The noodles I had here were just perfect! I would definitely come back here to try some other things on the menu!

Yelp
Sitting here in freezing weather with fogged glasses, wet chin and a full belly of Pho!, what more could I ask for? So flavorful and great wait staff! Get a Large #9 and enjoy!

Yelp
Excellent! Delicious spring rolls with super peanut sauce. Shrimp salad with fish sauce crisp and fresh. Basic service, simple space, family owned and run for 30 years. I'll be back!

Yelp
I don't know where to start. Nothing is good in this restaurant. Veggies served are old, serving portions are too small, and wow, their prices....expensive!

Yelp
I don't even know where to start with today's disappointment. Today was our 1st experience here. Seemed very packed and very popular. Myself and my fiancé stood in line waiting to order, which was fine, the only person working the register was also serving tables and bagging up to-go orders. When we finally got to the register to order, she was extremely short with us. We brushed that off. Every table available was dirty with dishes stacked on them. One guy came from the back who was also cooking, came to bus one table at a time. We sat down at a dirty table awaiting for it to be cleaned. It took about 20 mins before they cleaned our table. We witnessed people come and go as they got tired of waiting to order. One lady that was there before us got impatient waiting on her to-go order. She said she had been there about 45 mins before she finally got her food. After about 45+ mins, we finally got our order. It was bagged up to-go. We never told the lady at the register it was to-go. She never bothered to ask, so we assumed she knew we wanted to dine in. We chose to still dine in. We asked for bowls for our large pho. She gave us both small bowls. It DOES NOT hold a large pho. At this point we got extremely irritated. My fiancé politely asked for bigger bowls, the lady that works there got snappy and said they are all being washed. Okay cool, we will wait a bit. Pho broth was spilling out of our small salad bowls and getting all over the table. Piling up napkins to clean the spill. 2 mins later LARGE pho bowls were being delivered to other tables around us. Not once did she offer to bring us larger bowls we requested. We lost our appetites. People were still leaving due to the long wait. This was not a pleasant experience. Staff was extremely rude. The lady running register, packing to-go and delivering to tables was ignoring everyone that was asking her a question until she felt like responding to you. The only good thing that came out of it was the crab Rangoon we ordered. It was delicious! The few bites of pho I did eat was decent. Overall it was a waste of $37.54. I didn't even care to fight them to get my money back. I'll take that unfortunate loss.

Yelp
literal hole in the wall restaurant. It's still good food, just a hole in the wall atmosphere. if you are looking for a divey place, c'mon down to the river market area and they will impress you with their divey-ness. Not a lot of interaction with the staff. basically point to the menu and tell them the number you want.

Yelp
We are from St. Louis , our family had stop by this restaurant on our trip to visit KC . First , this is NOT a very tradition Vietnamese restaurant , especially if you are Vietnamese you shouldn't eat here . We ordered a bowl of Pho , a bowl of seafood Hutieu , a bowl of BúnBò and also a fried rice dish . And to tell the truth , when we taste the broth of the three soup bowls , we can't tell the different . It seemed like those were used the same broth for all three totally different soup type . This is a very BAD sign for a traditional restaurant , I ate the Búnbò but really can't tell , I had about 3 slices of beef and some beef meat balls - those meatballs we use on Phö - and that was it . They used those Pho meatballs on the tradition Bunbo Huê , this is not only bad but it's also an insult to people who love Vietnamese Foods . The seafood Hutieu had few pieces of bbq pork , a couple of shrimps and whole bunch of imitation crabs , and the herb and vegetables were stale and old , funny thing is the restaurant is surrounded by all the fresh vegetable shops .:-/ About the price , each cost around $10 , which is not bad , just about average . Will not come back and Not Recommended .

Yelp
I eat VN food every day at every VN joint in town, so I know of what I speak. Hien Vuong stands out as having the #1 Best Spring Rolls in Kansas City. I get mine with fish sauce instead of peanut and the herbs blend together for a heavenly taste. HV also does the best Bahn Tom (skramps and sweet potatoes) in town. This "appetizer" makes a good meal for one. HV doesn't skimp on the herbs like all the other places. They may not do the best Pho, but the Mi Bho Kho (spicy beef stew) could be some of the best winter soup I've ever eaten. Try it some time. I think the clear noodles they serve are also better than at other places. Stay away from the fried rice here, it's just not done well. I find the Buns to be pretty boring as well, compared to VNC39 or VNCCP as well. HV has been around for almost 20 years, run by the same family. This is the first VN restaurant my parents took me to when I was a kid and I'll always have a soft spot for Hien Vuong.
