The 21 Best Things to Do in Charleston

"Brunch at High Cotton restaurant is a hot ticket—reservations recommended, unless you manage to beat the church crowd and stampede there early. It’s a convivial place divided into four separate dining areas: a cozy, darkly paneled bar where the bluegrass players set up, a rear “French Quarter” room opening to a patio, the more formal “East Bay Room” (the quietest seating, musically), and the grand, sunny main dining room surrounded by street-facing windows. The food is a smorgasbord of southern flavor—fittingly, as brunch is should be an indulgent ritual–and highlights include crispy fried oysters, buttermilk fried chicken over Belgian waffles, and the like. Meat lovers go for steak & eggs (twin filet mignon) or the burger with sunny-side-up egg and béarnaise. Bring your family (cinnamon rolls and beignets for kids). Bring your friends. Tap your toes to the upright bass, and feel your mood lift." - Allston McCrady

Bluegrass Brunch at High Cotton — Brunch Review | Condé Nast Traveler

"What were your first impressions when you arrived?   Every Sunday from 10AM-2PM, the thick brick walls and heart pine floors of this 19th century building resonate with live bluegrass. Brunch at High Cotton restaurant is a hot ticket—reservations recommended, unless you manage to beat the church crowd and stampede there early. What’s the crowd like?   Families, vacationers, couples, locals in their Sunday best: everyone comes. There’s a real energy here—an amalgam of banjo, fiddle, whirling overhead plantation fans, friendly servers, gleaming white tablecloths, conversation, and clinking mimosas. What should we be drinking?   Most guests opt for the flight of mimosas: a carafe trio of different fruit nectars (try the peach) with your choice of a full or half bottle of bubbly. There’s also a classic Bloody Mary, of course, with veggie-infused vodka, garnished with crunchy okra and lemon. Coffee, tea, wine, juice, soda, cocktails: however you brunch, High Cotton obliges. Main event: the food. Give us the lowdown—especially what not to miss.   It’s a smorgasbord of southern flavor—hard to choose. Crab cakes benedict with Creole hollandaise is a star. The chef riffs on shrimp and grits by adding okra and fennel ladled with a blackened tomato-saffron gravy. Meat lovers go for steak and eggs (twin filet mignon) or the burger with sunny-side-up egg and béarnaise. There’s lighter fare in the form of various tasty salads, but I would guess that’s not why most people come. Brunch is typically an indulgent ritual: crispy fried oysters, buttermilk fried chicken over Belgian waffles, and the like. And how did the front-of-house folks treat you?   Lots of youthful, smiling servers here, warm and attentive, expertly trained, as one would expect from any of the Hall Family establishments (and if bluegrass is not your jam, you should consider the Gullah gospel brunch at Hall’s Chophouse). What’s the real-real on why we’re coming here?   Bring your family (cinnamon rolls and beignets for kids). Bring your friends. Tap your toes to the upright bass, and feel your mood lift." - Allston McCrady

For a Wednesday night, this place was packed. Great service, food, and live music. Ordered a seafood tower for two, split a ribeye steak with mashed potatoes, and blueberry pie for dessert. Would recommend and will be back!

Google
Stopped by on a Sunday around lunch time excited to try the place out but did not realize it was a brunch only menu so the items I was hoping for and craving was not an option. We first sat in the bar area but the vibe was just not there and it was very dark so we moved to the dining area which was much better. But off the bunch menu everything was good from the Beef carpaccio to the crab cake Benedict. The server was very nice and next time we are in the area we will make sure to check the menu times as we heard great things about the place but the brunch was good.

Google
Incredible meal, incredible service, gorgeous atmosphere. Came to High Cotton for dinner mid week. The first thing that stands out is how incredible the service was. From the minute we walked in it was 5 star all around. The food was also wonderful, the summer fruit salad was delicious, fried green tomatoes with pimento was out of this world, the entrees from the Steak to the Bouillabaisse were just mind blowingly fantastic. Loaded with seafood and flavor something i just dont get often back home. We were treated to an incredible chocolate cake as well. I just cant think of a better meal and experience. Next time im in town I will 100% be back.

Google
The breakfast food was fantastic. The seating we were blessed with, up on the platform, gave us a great view of the entire restaurant. All of the food was excellent, though the bacon was a little basic. I say that knowing the bacon is fantastic when it's incorporated with your dish. I just wouldn't recommend it on its own. Definitely come here for the Charleston atmosphere.

Beautiful restaurant! Our service was fantastic - very attentive, made great suggestions, super friendly. Our group couldn’t decide between the beignets or the cinnamon roll, so we got one of each (for a party of 5 this was perfect). We also had a basket of blueberry muffins, but my daughter devoured those before I could document them. My daughter split the chicken and waffles with her grandmother (she said the gravy on the side would have been better, just in case you aren’t a huge gravy fan, but she really liked the chicken). The shrimp and grits were a hit, and I very much enjoyed my omelette (plus the sweet potato hash - that was a star of the meal). We split hummingbird cake only because I’m on the hunt for finding one as good as my step-grandmother used to make for holidays. The bar is set super high, but I will say this is one of the better cakes I’ve tried (plus the bananas foster sauce poured on top was delicious!). Highly recommend this restaurant (and we also saw the cutest baby shower being set up in the back, it looked like a great spot for a celebration!)

Google
Words can't describe how amazing this whole meal was. But I'll try. From the fantastic wine to the perfectly cooked steak and lobster tail. My wife had a salmon dish, and I'm not much of a fish eater but even I LOVED it! And dessert, a mixed berry hand pie....what a way to end the night. Amazing. Our server was AMAZING! He made our honeymoon dinner an experience from start to finish! Save up the money and drop a few hundred on an unforgettable meal! It was worth it.

Google
Came for Valentine’s Day and had a wonderful time. They were pretty busy so even with a reservation we had to wait. The live band playing was excellent, it made the wait bearable. Food was great and we received very fast and attentive service. I really enjoyed the mussels. It’s just one of those things when done right you are ready to drink the sauce lol

Google
We came for a bachelorette party and the high cotton staff were so kind and made our night so special! The food was very good and the service was so attentive. The staff provided a framed photo of our party to celebrate our bride! What a nice touch! We ordered a seafood tower which was fun for the group. The lobster mac and tempura squash were great!

Yelp
Best she crab soup in Charleston. period. Elegant and well run. The waitstaff and management hover and cover to provide an enjoyable dining experience similar to Emerils in NOLA. Menu is diverse. I had wagyu steak and scallops. My very hot date/wife went for Shrimp & Grits. I dare you to find a dish that is not delish.

Yelp
My daughter, wife, and I enjoyed a fabulous meal at High Cotton during our overnight stay in Charleston. Even on a Monday evening, the dining room was busy when we arrived for our 8 p.m. seating. We had made a reservation a couple of days in advance and were glad we did. We were seated in a comfy raised semicircle booth. Live music wafted in from the room next door. One of the owners was visiting tables and stopped by to thank us for coming by. Nice touch. My daughter started with a lovely High-Thyme cocktail made with gin, thyme, and blackberries. We had a nice Barolo red wine for the table that they decanted for us when asked. A bread basket appeared to help take the edge off for our late dinner. My daughter ordered the wagyu, my wife ordered scallops, and I ordered the prime rib steak. The wagyu had a smoky, bacon-like taste that was delicious. The scallops were perfectly prepared and beautifully presented. My medium-rare steak was rich and meaty. We also shared sides of mashed potatoes and asparagus, which were yummy. To cap everything off, we shared a mini hummingbird cake and a slice of chocolate cheesecake. The hummingbird cake was our favorite, but the cheesecake was no slouch. Service was top-notch, and it was a team effort to deliver all our meals at the same time. Everyone was friendly, kind, and enjoyable to chat with. We had a great time and will return to try some other dishes.

Yelp
Came in on a Sunday night after a great evening in Charleston. What brought us in was the live music. Was seated in the bar right away. Service was quick. Had a really tasty old fashioned, enjoyed the truffle popcorn, and the rest of our party had some tasty lemoncello. The ambiance was awesome, the dude with the guitar was GOOD, and the crowd was totally into it! Last call was at 10, which was OK because we needed Pizza. We plan on making High Cotton part of our Charleston crawl.

Yelp
Had such an amazing experience at High Cotton! I went on a random road trip to Charleston and was in search of a place with good food and drinks and came across this place !! So happy Infound them after a nice day at the beach I ended my day here. Was warmly greeted by the host as soon as I walked in and asked for a seat at the bar since I was alone. Was pleasantly surprised with the live band which placed some great music! Service was super friendly and fast! The Espresso martini was some of the best I've had in a while. For dinner I ordered the Ribeye with Scallops with a side of whipped mashed potatoes and it was so good I didn't want to stop eating it. Ribeye was super juicy and cooked to perfection at Medium temp and seared beautifully! I cannot wait to visit this place again. And this was on a Tuesday!

Yelp
What a fabulous night the girls and I had everything was perfect and the bottles of wine were amazing. If you have the opportunity and you're in Charlston GO! you won't be disappointed.

Yelp
Best cinnamon roll I've ever had! We also split a crab cakes Benedict and they were so nice to split it for us and bring it in separate plates. The ambiance in the restaurant is so classy but also so down to earth for everyone to enjoy!

Yelp
what a truly beautiful restraint with a classy vibe and amazing food! my friends and i were blown away by the quality of the food and the fantastic service. the she-crab soup is a MUST!

Yelp
What a lovely place located at the French Quarters. Parking was a bit tough but we were able to find street parking a few blocks away. Oysters were fresh and clean. Smoked duck was delicious and filling, perfectly paired with brussel sprouts and some glaze. We also ordered some asparagus and rib eye, all were tasty and perfectly cooked! I could tell this place make sure their guests are having the best service and experience. Drinks were also made very well, and not too sweet. The manager there also gave us some champagnes on the house ! Everyone was extremely nice, the southern hospitality definitely showed. I recommend coming here if you like a nice dinner with amazing food!
google avatar

Scott F.

Yelp
High Cotton provided a good experience overall. We started with the Fried Oysters and Wedge Salad. The oysters were very flavorful and the green goddess dressing was very refreshing. The salad was also very good and not overdressed. Entree time and we went with the Antarctic Salmon and the Shrimp & Grits. Both of these were also very good. No complaints. We decided to go with the Hummjngbird cake to go. This was a mistake we have made with other restaurants and this one was also a mistake. The cake was very dry. Lesson..if doing dessert, don't get it to go. Other issue we had was the restaurant was really cold. Other than those issues. Service was good and the experience was good overall.

Yelp
Great for brunch! My parents were able to snag a same-day reservation on a Saturday afternoon. The interior had a high-end Southern vibe, with lots of natural light and framed art on the walls. Our server Molly was attentive and professional, and gave great recommendations. For drinks, I ordered a mocktail, which was tasty and refreshing. They also brought out a basket of complimentary mini Muffins, which was a cute touch. The texture of the muffins was perfect and they went great with the soft butter. For food, I ordered the New Bedford Sea Scallops. This dish was delicious and the portion size was perfect. The scallops were so well cooked with honey-bourbon gastrique, and the grits were tasty and filling. I asked for no candied bacon, and it really wasn't needed. My parents loved their food as well - the Shrimp & Grits and Crab Cakes Benedict. We especially loved my mom's Pimento Grits. Overall, worth the visit!

Yelp
I was eager to try the Gospel Brunch at High Cotton and booked a reservation for Saturday morning. The Plantation Singers are a wonderful gospel group based in Charleston. They sing and perform continuously in the Lounge area which is located in a separate area as you enter High Cotton. im glad they are in the Lounge as their voices would be a bit too much if they were stationed in the main dining room. The brunch entrees do not disappoint and as I always order a healthier alternative when I can I was happy to see the Yogurt Bowl offered so I ordered it without hesitation. It was wonderful. Molly ~ the server I had this morning ~ was cheerful and willing to please. She kept the coffee flowing and constantly refilled! I would recommend High Cotton for a "different yet local experience" complete with gospel tunes and upbeat atmosphere.

Yelp
Had a reservation here as it was highly recommended. I have to admit I was still full from lunch. The food had good flavor and my wife loved it more than me. I ordered the duck which was good but not great. The duck was dry and no flavor. My wife ordered the grits and it was better than mine. We ordered the truffle fries and a corn side that was very good. We ordered a bottle of wine that was perfect with our meal. We ordered a dessert that was good but not great. The atmosphere was very good and crowded. Everyone was dressed for an occasion. Our waitress stood out she was a hustler and was very attentive to us. Bathroom was a little confusing. I only found one bathroom and it was unisex. My wife found another one but I went to the first one that said bathroom and it was vacant. I would come back here.

Yelp
Part of the Halls group so I expected nothing but the best and it was we celebrated my girlfriend 60th birthday party. We had a nice dinner table and live music was in the bar that we got to enjoy very high class and lots of fun I would recommend going.
google avatar

Jose P.

Yelp
I celebrated my birthday here while visiting Charleston. I had a great time with my wife; the staff was very friendly. We got there early, sat at the bar, and listened to the one-man band for a little while until our table was ready. I had a nice steak and a lovely glass of wine. It was a quiet evening, so we lingered and had a great conversation over dinner, drinks, and desserts. While in Charleston, we had many good meals, and this was one of them for sure, even if it wasn't the number 1. It is still worth the visit.
google avatar

Kathleen D.

Yelp
High Cotton is swanky and sophisticated. My friend and I decided to pop in for a pre-dinner cocktail (or three) on my birthday. We didn't have a reservation, but we easily scored bar seats. Our bartenders were both super friendly and knew the menu well. I ordered the Havana lemonade to start, followed by their "world famous" espresso martini. I enjoyed both drinks. When I stopped by the bathroom (nice facilities, btw), my friend mentioned to the bartender that it was my birthday, and when I came back, he had crafted petite versions of the 199 cocktail, which was so unexpected and kind. It really made a lasting impression. My friend sneakily picked up the tab, but I know it was not a cheap visit. I would definitely go back on future trips to Charleston, and I'm interested to try their food too.

Yelp
What a beautiful place! Very elegant. Our server was great, very professional. Food was delicious!!! Probably one of the best filet mignon I've had so far! Order it medium and it was just perfect! Also the wild mushrooms were amazing! Their side dishes are definitely large perfect to share. We came here to celebrate our friends 40th, there was 7 of us girls. We had an amazing time! Thank you!!!
google avatar

Tricia B.

Yelp
The service here was amazing! I wish I would have come in more hungry because the lobster Mac and cheese was some of the best that I've ever had. The seafood bouillabaisse was delicious. It was very rich food.
google avatar

Scher S.

Yelp
5 stars all the way! We were able to get same day reservations & they did not disappoint. The mini blueberry muffins were hot & delicious for starters. The scallops breakfast was the best thing I've eaten in a while. All of the food was seasoned to perfection! My honey had the shrimp and grits which was good. My only critique is that the shrimp could have been cooked 1 minute longer because they were borderline translucent but still very tasty.
google avatar

Madison L.

Yelp
We had brunch here for a wedding rehearsal and it was absolutely lovely. The venue is stunning and truly embodies the charm of historic Charleston. The decor was bright, beautiful, and paid homage to the area. The staff were impeccable and service was amazing. I never lacked anything. The food was fantastic. For our event, it was served buffet style. They had fruit, lox, biscuits, beignets, French toast, shrimp and grits, she crab soup, bacon, eggs, and more. The star of the show was the crab soup and French toast. The drinks from the open bar were also great. Overall, this was a splendid place to have an event. The food, service, and ambiance are fantastic! It's classy, unique, and well worth a visit.

Michelle W.

Yelp
This was such a treat for us! We came on a three-generational girl's trip from California. Charleston was long ago on my bucket list. Picked High Cotton based upon the menu and reviews. Wanted to taste a touch of the South. It was amazing! From the drinks to the fried green tomato appetizer to shrimp and grits and all the orders...exceptional food and service all the way around. The icing on the cake was the Liz Kelley Trio playing in the lounge for 'dessert'. A safe and intimate way for my 11-year-old granddaughter to enjoy jazz with her mom and Mimi while drinking her Shirley Temple! (I had something a bit stronger...!). Thank you, High Cotton, for the tremendous experience.
google avatar

Lee Ann W.

Yelp
Oh, the food! The she crab soup is a MUST! I had the halibut which was so yummy and my daughter had the wagyu steak and we shared the whipped potatoes. Beautiful restaurant, great service - definitely make a reservation - it is pricey but worth every penny! Don't miss out on dessert!
google avatar

Susan M.

Yelp
High Cotton has lots of ambience and charm. The lights are low and all the servers are professional and polite! They work as a team so you do not have to wait or ask for anything! The only photos I took was my dish of seared scallops with broccoli/cauliflower mixture and a side dish of asparagus. My scallops were baby sized and not enough food. The veggies that were plated with the scallops were 3 bites. I was still hungry. Our table shared asparagus and Brussels sprouts. The Brussel sprouts were soooo good but the asparagus were too thick and the stem was left on so you couldn't eat that part or cut through it with a knife. Shocked. All was delicious but my main course was just too small for the price and our server did not let me know the scallops were tiny. The Creme brûlée that we shared afterwards was good but had a strong cinnamon flavor that over powered the dish. We enjoyed our dinner very much and will try High Cotton again. But to be fair, I will just not order the Scallops with a big appetite!
google avatar

Katrina G.

Yelp
We arrived for our reservation super early and though we couldn't be seated at the earlier time we were directed to the bar to wait. Super fun area with live music (awesome cover band), good drinks, and small bites. Trying not to ruin my appetite I eventually opted for the parmesan truffle popcorn while waiting. Excellent choice for a light snack. The group also had calamari which was well liked. As I love a good infused vodka - the 199 cocktail was an great choice. I had two! Our wait was longer than expected, but our party of 8 was given complimentary glasses of champagne once seated. Warm bread was served and was definitely a hit with the bread lovers at the table. I had the shrimp and grits and it was delicious. I could definitely come back to High Cotton when back in Charleston.
google avatar

Austin P.

Yelp
6/5! Visiting Charleston and had an amazing meal here, best of the trip. I ordered the oysters (to die for), scallops (pretty good) and Brussel sprouts (best of my life). My wife got the salmon. We were celebrating our baby moon and they made us feel special with amazing service and free champagne/sparkling cider. Very professional wait staff, excellent vibes and ambiance. Would definitely return! Be sure to get a reservation or show up right when they open.
google avatar

RNelle S.

Yelp
The fried oysters with the green goddess sauce was delicious. The crab benedict was good. The service was blah. Our server, Rileigh was just ok. We didn't feel welcomed, she just took our order and walked away. Great food, poor service.
google avatar

Angela L.

Yelp
The entire meal was scrumptious! The mushrooms were cooked and seasoned perfectly. I wanted to devour more of them. The brussel sprouts were delicious and paired well with everything. Staff were very patient and helpful. We had asked our server to take photos of us and they did so with a lot of patience. Definitely would come here again to try other items on the menu!
google avatar

Holly W.

Yelp
This restaurant exceeded our expectations in all the ways. We dined as a group of 11 for a bachelorette trip. The waiter was top notch. On top of everything, refilling drinks, taking our orders. I'm assuming the Nigerian man is a manager...he was absolutely phenomenal as well. We were brought complimentary champagne and he took our pictures as well as printed it out for our bride. The food was delicious. My daughter enjoyed her filet and lobster Mac-n-cheese. I had a filet along with the best Brussel Sprouts I have ever eaten. All of the sides were delicious. Drinks were fabulous as well. I highly recommend booking this restaurant for a group. You won't be disappointed. I wish I had gotten names because they deserve all the praise! (I brought the Brussel sprouts home with me to Georgia for my husband to try, he said they were great and he doesn't usually like them.)
google avatar

Sara C.

Yelp
The server was attentive but the food soared past my expectations. This was delicious and well done. Props to everyone here. Even the bussers nailed it. You know when they have luxury table linens that it's going to be a luxury experience. I got the scallops and a bunch of the sides and they were all amazing. I was only sad because they were out of the lychee martini ingredients. Otherwise the live music was lovely. Just a warning it is extremely loud in the restaurant anyway with talking

Shreya C.

Yelp
High Cotton was one of the best meals we have ever had! My partner and I came down from Atlanta for a long weekend and we were pleasantly surprised. Order the beef carpaccio! Everything was very flavorful and all of the staff were extremely attentive. Definitely ask for Tyrell as your server for the best time. He was phenomenal.

Malcolm G.

Yelp
This has to be the best restaurant in Charleston, SC! The food, drinks, and service is beyond what we expected! Patti, Mark, and Becky made our 24th anniversary incredibly special!

Single Gal S.

Yelp
My friend and I had an awesome time at this very classy, older beautiful restaurant last night. We were very warmly greeted by Becky, Manager, and had many interactions with her staff. Becky came by and checked on us a few times and she is a true evangelist of the brand. Caleb T. was a great server. He is a very active listener and a Clemson graduate. Way to go! The food was amazing. We had the special of the day which was grouper, a side of scallops and brussels sprouts. More than enough for two people. The brussel sprouts are a must. They have an awesome sauce they put on top. We also tried the gluten-free cookie dough cake, and it was huge and amazing! This restaurant is a must if you are in the Charleston area.

Alera W.

Yelp
I was so shocked after eating at sister restaurant Halls Chop House! We were expecting the same great service but was sadly disappointed. I watched as our server attended to other tables so promptly but we waited on our main dish for over 25 minutes.
google avatar

Randy H.

Yelp
My wife and I had an excellent experience. The waitstaff was very attentive and helpful. We started off with the fried green tomatoes--a first for us. We enjoyed the breading and the Lowcountry pimento cheese topping with a hint of pepper jelly. My wife had the salmon. We both agreed this was the best preparation of salmon we have eaten. It was excellent. I had the hanger steak which was done exactly as I wanted. I topped it with the herby chimichurri sauce which worked well with the steak. The sides are huge so unfortunately we did not eat them all. Not because they were not good but because the portions were huge. We shared the brussel sprouts which were excellent. We also had the fries which were also very good. This was an excellent meal.
google avatar

Gail W.

Yelp
Didn't live up to the hype. Average food with premium prices. * Fried green tomatoes appetizer - tasty * steak (filet) was somewhat dry ... not impressed * Brussels sprouts had too much sauce which reduced crispiness

Jameson C.

Yelp
We stopped here on a girls trip because we wanted to get an espresso martini. The service and attention we received was top notch. Everyone working there wants to make sure you enjoy the experience. Before we left I made a reservation to come back the next day for dinner and a 3 piece band. The ambiance was very enjoyable.

Rick L.

Yelp
Impeccable service Great food and atmosphere. 5 star dining experience. Definitely a top restaurant in Charleston.

Yelp
First time here during New Year's Eve, and first impression was friendly and relaxing ambience. Now give it it's New Year's Eve, and almost every restaurant requires reservations. We decide to stop here for a last-minute brunch. The hostess was nice enough to squeeze a table in for us, and our waiters were top-of-the-line. Ultimately what really made this experience even better was our two waiters KELLEY and DREW. They made great conversation to my wife and I plus they went as far as to making sure we had good suggestion of places to go visit since were from out of town. It's hard to find good service in restaurant nowadays but these two are an example, on how service SHOULD be. So be sure to ask for them if you happen to stop by. Now onto the real stuff. Menu had a good variety of food in this case. Brunch is what we ate here I had the chicken waffles, which were savory and still fresh. Chicken was moist and full of flavor, accompanied by the grits, which really surprised me. My wife had the seafood, scallops and grits, which didn't do it justice, but having a taste was very satisfying! You would be doing yourself a disservice if you didn't have their cocktails or waiters recommended great cocktails and honestly you can't go wrong with any of the signature drinks on the menu. Highly recommend this place for friends, family groups, and even a date night they have tables near the large windows that had plenty of light coming in and great for people watching lol! If you're looking for a classy and laid-back fun, restaurant.... High Cotton fits the bill!

Yelp
Went for the Jazz brunch which made it such a great brunch. The music is the perfect level so you can hear it throughout the restaurant. The cinnamon roll is amazing!!! A great appetizer or sharable for the table. The grits that comes with the meal were delicious and the farmers market omelette was light and the vegetables in it were super fresh! A great place to make a reservation!

Yelp
We went to High Cotton for our 55th wedding anniversary. The staff was exceptional especially Seth, our waiter. The food was delicious and plentiful. The atmosphere was very loud, hard to even hear each other. It is not conducive to an intimate celebration and no acknowledgement of our celebration by anyone. Would recommend High Cotton for the food and service but not for an intimate celebration. .

Yelp
There's just something about having an espresso martini at the bar at High Cotton. At Christmas time, it's bustling with activity, and it's wonderful to enjoy the live jazz. It's one of our favorite local haunts!

Yelp
They provided great service, professional waitress and servers. Food excellent. Birthdays were celebrated style. Comfortable seating. Loved the curved seating booth. Cozy. Quiet even though band was in the other room.

Yelp
We went to high cotton for dinner thinking there would be live music. Unfortunately we were seated in the main dining room and cannot even hear any of the live music, which is in the bar area. So was definitely disappointed about the entertainment. The main dining room itself was very loud. It was a bustling Thursday evening. We ordered a glass of Chardonnay, which was literally not even half filled! It was only filled 25% of the glass! It was astonishing! Also ordered broiled oysters, which were filled with many bacon bites, definitely was not my favorite. Followed by the grilled halibut with a side of lump crab meat and asparagus. This was Ok, I liked the lump crab meat! And a side order of the roasted cauliflower, this was delicious! Overall, I don't know what the hype of the restaurant is. The place is very loud, can't hear live music in the dining room, and food was Ok.

Yelp
5 stars everytime. This is not only the best food in Charleston, but the best dining experience. The ambiance is perfect for a small group setting, date night, or large party! The live music is always great. A MUST-GET is the mussels. My favorite sides are the lobster mac, mashed potatoes, and asparagus. The scallops are also amazing, and the lobster tail was to die for. If you're going for an occasion, make sure to let them know.. they typically give out champagne or a special shot/drink. I will always recommend High Cotton to anyone visiting or living here!

Yelp
We weren't expecting to eat here, but we're so glad we did. It was our favorite dinner of the whole trip. My best friend and I planned a trip to Charleston for our 21st birthday's. The original Friday night plan was to dine at Church and Union but they disappointed us on so many levels. After deciding not to eat there, I called High Cotton and they were able to seat our group of 7 in 5 minutes. When getting there, the staff was pleasant and sat us at the best table in the restaurant. Throughout our meal, managers came up to us and made conversations. The meal was exquisite; my steak was to die for and cooked perfectly. Once they learned we were celebrating we received a round of espresso martinis on the house as well as cake at the end of dinner. One manager in particular had come up to our table to take pictures for us, my mouth was full and I made a joke about waiting for me to chew, in response he took a picture of me with my mouth full of food jokingly and a nice picture of the table; We thought it was hilarious when he came back with printed pictures of both. They know how to make your meals memorable and we left knowing that hospitality is of importance to them. We enjoyed ourselves and our meal, and I would 100% recommend eating here if you're ever visiting Charleston.

Yelp
Best she crab soup, great customer service, I wasn't a fan of all the Mayo on my lobster roll but it was a great night at the High Cotton. Good drinks, polite staff, and awesome live music by Rob McCurry! Make sure to have the She Crab Soup here, so good!!!

Yelp
We enjoyed our meal at High Cotton, which was recommended to us before we went to Charleston for a trip. We shared a wedge salad at the bar prior to our reservation because we got there early. The ambience is classy and the staff is formal while still being friendly and polite. The serving sizes weren't huge, and we were encouraged to order sides, but we just weren't that hungry. The food itself as well prepared. I've never tasted duck quite like this and was impressed with the flavor, texture, and the mashed potatoes that complemented the dish so well. I ordered an Irish coffee for dessert, which hit the spot. I would like to visit this restaurant one day when I am hungrier to sample more side dishes. It was a nice touch when the manager came over to ask us how our meal was. He seemed genuinely interested and was very friendly. This is definitely one of the restaurants you should sample in the French Quarter if you're visiting Charleston anytime soon.

Yelp
We went for brunch and, surprisingly, were able to walk in without a reservation. Restaurant is beautiful in a traditional fine dining way, with a large wood paneled bar, that has seating as well. Service was typical for what you would expect, very attentive and did a wonderful job describing the menu. Food was delicious! I had the chicken and waffles, my husband had the scallops and grits. I liked that the portion sizes weren't over sized, they were enough to fill you up, but not stuff you. Looking forward to getting back for dinner now!

Yelp
Genuinely the best meal I had in Charleston. Scallops were unbelievably delicious, perfectly cooked and paired with a cauliflower medley that sat on a bed of tomato and cream sauces. Everything complemented each other beautifully. It is recommended to order a side, although I feel we didn't need it. We ended up ordering the lobster mac-n-cheese, but it was far too decadent and rich to follow the she crab soup we started with. (In my opinion, better than the soup we had at Hyman's seafood, which is supposedly "the best in Charleston.") Would've opted for a lighter side if I were to go again. The lavender cheesecake was beautiful, though slightly drier than I would've hoped. It seemed to be coated in a sort of candy-shell, which although gorgeous, I feel like it took away from the dessert textually. Our waiter was very attentive and quick. Crumbs being scraped off the table was a nice touch, as was her lighting my birthday candle a second time so that I could get a picture! Would recommend to anyone visiting the city!
