15 Best Coffee Shops in Asheville, North Carolina | Eater Carolinas

"With three locations in Asheville, High Five is a staple in the Appalachian town. Looking to try something new? Check out the barista’s choice program which allows the baristas to create experimental drinks for a limited time. This location features Adirondack chairs to relax and sip your coffee while enjoying the view of the French Broad River. Dog-friendly." - Lyndsay Cordell

Google
Coffee is stellar and place is really cute! I got a quad americano and really really love it when people put love into what they do. Barista was also super welcoming to us and our two little dogs. Tons of places to sit outside by the river as well as a little trail to walk. I'm really happy we stopped in here on our way through!

Google
High Five Coffee by the river is an absolute vibe. Tucked inside a little barn, this spot is cozy, warm, and full of character. I had the rosemary sage latte, and it was delightful, a total sensory treat. The staff was super friendly, the location is beautiful, and the laid-back river energy just adds to the experience. A perfect place to start your Asheville morning. I’ll definitely be back.

Google
This place is super chill with great coffee! They make tons of fun seasonal drinks, so there’s always something new and fun to try! The people are very chill and you can go and sit by the river and just enjoy the scenery or chat with friends. I highly recommend checking it out! It’s a bit tricky to find because you’d never realize it was there, but maps should take you right to it. It’s also a great place to take your dogs cause there’s space for them to run around and play!

Google
It's a small quiet place by the water which I appreciated. I had their specialty drink the storm and it was a delightful blend of spices. Their coffee machine gives off the impression they know coffee. Both times I've gone, staff was pleasant. And the morning sun through the window takes it all home. If you're lucky, you may get to play with the resident doggos. Lots of seating outside, though the coffee shop is small and couldn't handle a large crowd. My favorite shop to sit and have coffee at in north Asheville! Thanks high five team. I'm grateful for the time and energy y'all put in to that location to recover from helene. Total rebuild to come back! Go support these folks! Also, they have cool shirts.

Google
Went twice when we were in Woodfin last weekend. Incredible baristas, vibes, and drinks. I got “The Storm.” Got to sit outside and see the beautiful views of the river. So glad to hear they’re back up and running after the storms. Will definitely be back!

Such a fun little shop! First the beverages are AMAZING! The staff is so welcoming and fun! It's a beautiful little spot to relax by the river.

Google
PROS • Great location on the river — easily walkable from our Airbnb — with architecture that gently nudges you outdoors, where you will find ample outdoor seating (tables for two scattered along the river, plus a small pavilion that would comfortably suit about 8 people at a time). • You can tell they use quality products and equipment with highly reputable brands on display. • Excellent-tasting lattes (cinnamon cesspool, salted maple and orange). • Service was prompt. CONS • Paying around 75 cents per ounce on a latte is a steep premium. • Having a 10 ounce ceiling on latte sizing puts a squeeze on one’s ability to sip and enjoy the local scenery, which is a shame. A 21-24 ounce size option would be nice eventually. • Although there were allergy-friendly milk options (oat milk), for this price point you would expect to see coconut milk on the menu. BOTTOM LINE • The product and service are obviously high quality but the value could be much more competitive. The building itself can fairly be described as a modified tuff shed with a pavilion and staffing seems to amount to one person, which strongly implies wide profit margins — so offer more generous portions. • While we would make a return trip for the sake of convenience and taste, we’re more tempted to try other options in the area, so High Five may want to explore options that incentivize 2-3 return trips through loyalty programs or voucher-style partnerships with nearby Airbnb hosts.

Google
Delicious breakfast foods and well-made coffee with a beautiful view of the river. Great place to sit and ponder.

Yelp
Had a coffee and a cookie by the river. It was absolutely lovely!! I'll be back for sure!

Yelp
5***** for this river location near to our Airbnb in Woodfin. A delightful riverside spot with some chairs here & there, some tables, folks with dogs. Very laid back. even in the mid summer heat, it was pleasant enough to spend time outside here. Tiny indoor space not really room to dwell other than a narrow counter area if I remember correctly. I had the same thing every day for the duration of our week long stay, the Diablo...so memorable ! And I almost never ever buy coffee out(unless on vacation) and typically stick with a plain drip coffee..This was amazing, filling & addictive. If you are in the area, totally worth a trip. ** we didn't find out until our final day, but there is a stamp reward card..and we were 5 people who made a bunch of trips..either way, all agreed a wonderful find.

Yelp
Loving this river location. High five is a solid local choice in the asheville area. It has become a local staple as they have a few locations now. This one might be a new fav. Situated amongst the river in a little bit, this spot is delightful. There are other art spaces nearby and a shared bathroom. The high five shop has some simple breakfast options such as muffins, scones and Sammie's. Their coffee is great. I got an oat milk latte and it was pretty expensive but creamy and delish. They also have kombucha, soda water, beer and non alcoholic options. Cute! The staff were friendly and engaging. Plenty of space to wait inside and sit outdoors. Might be challenging in winter but they do have parking for a speedy visit too.

Yelp
Dang so good! I drop into this spot every time I'm in Asheville. It's a must go to if you want the best Cortado in town. It's right on the river so it has a beautiful setting. The baristas really know what they're doing on a pro level.

Yelp
Coffee artisans. This spot is one of my favorites in Asheville. On the French Broad without hype and circumstance. The Diablo coffee blew my mind today. Espresso, just a little hot milk, cinnamon, cayenne, sea salt and local honey. I am not one for coffee drinks but this hit all the tastebuds. Enjoy!

Shannon S.

Yelp
Cute little shop. Loved the riverside seating. Saw a mom and baby deer across the river. We got three different drinks. Two were great. One (the barista special) wasn't our top pick but was unique and appreciated. The breakfast sandwich (egg and cheese biscuit) was premade and then warmed which threw me off BUT it was really good. The biscuit had cheese and herbs in it. A lovely surprise. The bagel we ordered was fluffy and toasted nicely. A great end to our trip.

Yelp
Cesspool of Cinnamon, I believe my latte was called....OUTSTANDING. One of the best lattes that I have ever consumed. It was orchestrated perfectly. Just enough sweetness, cinnamon was the star, creamy oat milk & a great pulled shot of espresso. I can't wait until my next visit!! Great location as well...aside from the treatment plant (I've smelled worse).

Yelp
Perfect spot for coffee on a weekend morning, or a nice place to hang out and get some work done if you're a local. It's a weird area, so we ended up parking at the Woodfin Park down the road and walking the short trail to the shop. Cool little location directly on the river in a small shed. Filled with merch and coffee making equipment, they cram it into this spot. All the offerings you come to expect from a coffee shop and more / large unique espresso drink menu as well as drip and tea offerings. They've got a few food options too but didn't get any so can't speak to that. Great original specials menu, we got a cinnamon latte and tried a golden milk. Everything we had was made well and not overly flavored. The real draw of this spot is the riverfront though, even if that's not rare in Asheville. We spent a morning hanging out in some Adirondacks right on the water, and seating isn't really lacking so you've got a pretty good chance of grabbing a good spot for a drink or two. Perfect coffee joint - we'll be back.

Yelp
This place just rocks. So charming. Epic calm location. Ha yummy snacks and the coffee is perfection. I love coming here for solo time or a little meeting or date.
google avatar

Ellen H.

Yelp
Amazing coffee and beautiful location to enjoy it! The inside was super cozy and although there was only one barista working, the wait was minimal and the drink was amazing! I got a PSL, and it was perfect for the chilly morning next to the river.

Yelp
YUUUMMY black coffee right on the river. Very tiny space, but worth walking or driving down to it and enjoying a peaceful place in Asheville!

Yelp
Great coffee such a chill vibe. Beautiful location. I would always go here. I wish the coffee was hotter. I like drinking steaming hot drinks.
google avatar

Ranisha P.

Yelp
Service was great and loved my latte with oat milk. View is spectacular, planning to go back during my trip here in Asheville.

Yelp
Super cool location, and even better coffee! I got a cold brew with their brown sugar caramel syrup. So so so good!

Abigail S.

Yelp
Delicious coffee, beautiful location, and excellent service Their seasonal "Maple Salted Latte" was perfect. The coffee was complemented, not drowned out, by the flavor. Not too sweet, not too salty, and a hint of maple.

Sarah E.

Yelp
Great folks, genuine and kind Highly recommend 'the weather report' with their coffee selection Beautiful setting on French Broad to help let go of the stress and remember what counts

Yelp
What a relaxing place for coffee in the summer. I visited HFC on a summer afternoon weekday. The rustic interior and barn shaped building makes HFC a perfect extension of its natural surroundings. The large windows on the riverside and south side of the barn brings in lots of light and allows you to enjoy the outdoors while enjoying your coffee sitting on one of the stools. I was a little disappointed with the limited seating inside but it must work in the winter time. There is plenty of seating outside to enjoy the outdoors and your coffee. Many of the seats are in shaded areas but many of the picnic tables are not in shaded areas. Kids can run freely outdoors. While I enjoyed my coffee on a picnic table two young boys were having fun near the water. HFC serves Counter Culture Coffee, a top coffee roaster in the US. I ordered a cortado and an iced coffee with no additives. The cortado was okay but the iced coffee was one of the best I've ever tasted. Iced coffees are usually bitter and not pleasant. The only reason why I ordered an iced coffee was because it was hot out and I wanted to enjoy a cold drinks outside near the river. I was so glad I risked it. HFC is worth the detour for coffee in a relaxing location.

Yelp
First. These ppl r listed as rosters. They aren't. Counter Culture beans u can get from anywhere. Drink selection is slimmer then my own home. Don't drive out of the way for this place. Complete waste.

Yelp
I had pretty high expectations for this coffee shop, especially after reading the reviews. My friends booked an airbnb right across the street, so we were able to walk to this location and grab coffees in the morning. The best part of my experience was the service; the worker at the front noticed that we were visiting and started a simple conversation about our itinerary. She gladly helped and answered out questions, even though we had five separate orders. I ordered an earl grey tea drink, but was disappointed with the flavor. Usually, earl grey is extremely fragrant -- I could only taste/smell hints of it here. The drink was not sweet enough for my preference, but still decent to drink. My friends ordered a variety of coffee and baked goods, but they all mentioned that it tasted like any other coffee shop. Overall, the views and scenery of this location is pleasant, but the product isn't worth purposely coming here!

Arden L.

Yelp
my favorite spot in avl! friendly staff and delicious coffee. i love sitting outside along the river and drinking a hot spicy mocha :)
google avatar

Yelp
The first time we tried to come here, it was a torrential downpour and they don't have any indoor seating due to covid. So we came back the next day and it was well worth the wait! The barista was super nice and helpful. We tried an iced cubano and iced barista's choice - on this day it was an oat milk, CBD honey, and cinnamon latte type drink. Absolutely delicious. Plenty of cinnamon on top so it was incredibly aromatic. We also tried an egg and cheese biscuit and that alone was worth the trip. The biscuit was herbed and seasoned?!? Holy sh*t it was delicious. Enjoying all of that while sitting alongside the roaring French Broad River was just a dream. Covid-19 details: mask for ordering and pickup, only outdoor seating.

Yelp
Great coffee, friendly staff, and nice location on the river. We visited every day during our stay in Asheville.

Yelp
A little pricey, but lovely spot with great coffee. The lemon blueberry muffin is delicious. Very nice barista.

Yelp
If you want a relaxing and peaceful cup of coffee or tea, High Five is the place. Wonderfully situated on the river, the location makes for an amazing experience. The coffee was exceptionally crafted with a nice bold flavor. The chai tea was just as good. The chai blasted with spice. I appreciate the fact the shop lets the customer determine milk and syrup, rather than them.
google avatar

Amy F.

Yelp
Nice and secluded, right on the river. Super nice staff and some delicious coffee :) Lots of outdoor place, some picnic tables but it's a not a bad idea to grab a camping chair and just relax
google avatar

Yelp
I love High Five, it's one of the best coffee shops in Asheville, and I was super excited when they announced that they were opening one on Riverside. My husband & I make this our weekend spot, we drive out here, get a cortado (and a macchiato) and grab a seat outside (in the warm weather) or a seat at the window (when it's cold or rainy). It's great to leave the world behind and just become memorized by the river. I can't think of another coffee shop east of the Mississippi that has this kind of view and ambiance. I highly recommend checking it out!
google avatar

Melissa N.

Yelp
Best coffee in Asheville. I dream about the el diablo until I return! Beautiful location too.

Yelp
Talk about a hidden gem, High Five has created a real winner. First off, the views of the French Broad River are just stunning here, With outdoor tables, as well as an indoor bar in front of the picture window. It is a quaint, almost tiny building, but it does not feel cramped or cluttered. The location at the old Burlington Coat Factory complex, a short distance north of Woodfin's Riverside Park, gives it something of a coffee shop monopoly in the area. And for kayakers, there's even something of a dock there, with steps going up to the back door of the coffee shop. Hi Five Coffee seems to have a great reputation, and I can see why. My wife had an incredible almond milk cappuccino creation that was so tasty, that I really enjoyed it and did not even notice the lack of dairy based cream. They have great snacks, including little tubs of almond butter, hummus, freshly boiled farm eggs, and sandwiches in addition to the standard yogurt and dessert type offerings. It is a little tricky to get to, but well worth the effort, for a good relaxing, but rejuvenating cup of Joe.

Renata Sabine V.

Yelp
I was very excited to go to High Five Coffee simply because it's such a lovely place, surrounded by grass, along side the river. But darn. What an unpleasant experience. The girl taking orders and delivering them on the other side of the building was impatient and seemed irritated to begin with, then got arrogant about what they did and didn't have. She continued spewing attitude so much that I had to ask her if she was mad when she delivered my final drink. What's up people? Is customer service etiquette not a thing anymore?

India S.

Yelp
The staff here is super friendly! The views are amazing & exactly where you want to have a cup of coffee. Super dog friendly too, I didn't have my dog but most people did & I just love that, super chill. The coffee is delicious & they had an oat milk option, I had the cold brew. Amazing.

Douglas K.

Yelp
This place is a hell hole. Why because of ignorant proprietor and ridiculous treatment especially after driving out of our way. I'm a customer, not a slave to the whims of others.
google avatar

Caroline D.

Yelp
Tip - you gotta drive down and through a parking lot to find this hidden gem. Incredible coffee, strong and well made! Counter culture beans (I think). Bonus - it's directly on the river and you can sip away, ease your troubled mind. Pretty good prices, but it's worth the extra dough for this taste.
google avatar

Emily O.

Yelp
I have visited all the locations of High Five coffee and they are all wonderful, a little quirky, and made a darn good cup of coffee. But I come here for one thing and one thing only, The Diablo. Sweet, spicy, creamy coffee that keeps me coming back Saturday after Saturday to get my fix.
google avatar

Lea D.

Yelp
Love their new location!!! Bring your own mug as they only have takeout cups. The shop is right on the water surrounded by shade trees. It's so peaceful here! And as always the coffee is amazing! My favorite is the hot oat mayan (spicy mocha).

Stephania F.

Yelp
Having a bad day? Go here. Having a good day? Go here. Just go here :-) The view of the French Broad is unbelievable. Really nice and calm atmosphere with the friendliest staff. The drinks are great, and they seem to have seasonal drinks as well! Tip: it's behind the mill!
google avatar

Cynthia L.

Yelp
A new discovery for me after Woodfin Police posted about it on their Facebook page. Several people enjoying coffee while they worked on laptops. Outside seating must be beautiful in good weather under trees on the riverbank. A trail too if you feel like a walk. I enjoyed coffee just sitting by a window inside watching the French Broad rolled on by. My new hideaway. I also had no idea that the Mill etc was there or that the entrance to it takes you into the large parking lot and business/office area.
google avatar

Marie H.

Yelp
Love the hidden away location near the river. Coffee was great but would have appreciated heavy whipping cream for my coffee even if it was an upcharge. Super laid-back atmosphere.

John M.

Yelp
Espresso snob here. High Five is excellent! Delicious, velvety smooth shots, wonderful service, and great location. Loved it
google avatar

Todd C.

Yelp
A latte by the river......shall I say more? . A little tough to find but worth it. The staff provided fast and friendly service. They use Counter Culture coffee (hello Big Trouble) so I knew I had found a great spot. They have chairs placed by the French Broad River and it's incredibly relaxing.
google avatar

Stan G.

Yelp
This just may be the gem of coffee stops around Asheville. Hidden behind the Mill buildings right on the French Broad river is an excellent coffee house. If I had a criticism it would be that all coffee is served in paper cups. We like our espresso in hard containers!
google avatar

Benito P.

Yelp
Work at the warehouse nearby. Pretty lucky to be so close to the coolest coffee shop in town! Greg and June are awesome!
google avatar

Cecilie J.

Yelp
A great spot for a coffee and relaxation. Great staff and I got introduced to my new favorite coffee drink here, the Cubano, on ice or not, equally delish. Truly a gem

Phillip C.

Yelp
Legit vibe and location on the river to enjoy a cup of coffee and relax. Friendly staff who were more than willing to give us good recommendations.
