Got here because I was going to the art supplies place around the corner and I got hungry. The place is cozy and the people friendly. So he food is absolutely tasty!!! Ordered the Chicken Tandori Wrap and I love it!!!!!

Google
Reviews look high, but are incredibly misleading. As an Indian, this food was far from authentic. Everything seemed like it was reheated from frozen, the malai kofta was as hard as a rock and the chicken seekh kebab lacked any flavor. The naan also seemed frozen or not fresh, it was flat and just broken off when trying to get a piece. Right after, felt sick and left 90% of the food.

Google
Really enjoyed this causal little place. The okra was delicious, the little seating area is shaded by trees, set far back from the road, had very peaceful ambiance with a little fountain. Very reasonably priced for the area. Highly recommend

Google
Got lunch for two and ended up getting sick. Not the kind of sick where you're stuck on or by the toilet, but sick enough to where your stomach is upset for a couple days. The restaurant didn't look dirty but something is not right with that kitchen or the cooking. It's too bad because the cashier and cook were nice. I'd stay far away from this place.

Google
High peaks is the best. The food is incredible and the owners are so kind. Incredible curries, naan, and veggie samosas, and they are quick to offer a cup of chai and go the extra mile to make guests feel special.

Google
Hands down the best Indian food in Oakland. Literally everything we ate was good and we shared 7 dishes. Highly recommend!

Google
Absolutely delicious, family owned, and great service. I would highly recommend trying this restaurant, we will definitely be coming back again!

If you're looking for Indian food in the East Bay, definitely check out this place. The owner and team are friendly and just good people, the food is made with love and is delicious. I wish they made and served Tibetan food!

Ricardo A.

Yelp
The food is star here. Great food and friendly service. Very small place. Best for take out / delivery. Great prices. Coconut lamb and beingan bharta our faves. Paneer tika masala my kids fave .

Catherine A.

Yelp
I'm not sure how this place has so many stars. I ordered the saag paneer and it was mediocre. The naan was not the traditional naan, felt more like a tortilla. I ordered delivery through Door Dash and most, if not all restaurants seal the bag. This one was not sealed which was disturbing. I probably won't order from here again.

A S.

Yelp
They just announced they've permanently closed. This is terrible news. High Peaks Kitchen was a terrific, employee-owned restaurant run by wonderful, delightful people. I'd drive there from Orinda whenever I wanted terrific Indian and Tibetan food. High Peaks Kitchen will be terribly missed!

Yelp
Bro, if you're craving some killer Indian food, High Peaks Kitchen is where it's at! The Chicken Tikka Masala? Absolute fire, man. And don't even get me started on the garlic naan--soft, buttery, and perfect for soaking up all that saucy goodness. The crew here is super chill and friendly, which is always a plus. Only bummer? They don't throw in the rice for free. Like, what? Gotta fork out extra for the carbs? C'mon, bro! But seriously, the food smacks. Worth the trip for sure.

Nicole C.

Yelp
Biriyani is not the same as a few years ago, mushy rice just ridiculous, such a shame. I sent it back, avoid this place, the owner is a jerk as well

Yelp
We got takeout for dinner from High Peaks Kitchen and it was good. This is a small, humble Indian restaurant that opened on College Ave in Rockridge in March 2014. The owners/staff are from Tibet, which is probably how the restaurant name came to be. High Peaks has a fairly extensive menu with many Indian staples including various curries, biryani, and tandoori dishes. They serve meat, seafood, and vegetarian dishes. Here's what we ordered and picked up: * L04. Lamb Vindaloo ($15.50) - boneless lamb cooked with potatoes and a spicy vindaloo sauce * P09. Chicken Coconut ($14.49) - boneless white meat chicken cooked with coconut and spicy sauce * V17. Chana Masala ($13.49) - garbanzo beans with curry sauce * V07. Mushroom Masala ($13.99) - mushroom cooked with onion, tomato, and spices * BR4. Garlic Naan ($3.75) - fresh bread cooked in a clay oven and topped with minced garlic and cilantro Everything was still warm and delicious when we had it at home. My favorite item was the Chana Masala. It had great texture and flavor. I couldn't stop eating it. Generally, all of the food tasted fresh and of good quality. The lamb was tender and the vindaloo sauce wasn't too spicy. The Chicken Coconut was okay. It wasn't my favorite because I'm not the biggest fan of white meat chicken. The Mushroom Masala was good. It was packed with umami. The Garlic Naan was very tasty and essential to our meal, I think. Plain white basmati rice also came with our entrees. Overall, the meal was satisfying and hit the spot for all of us. This was for three adults and two kids, and we were full afterwards. Service was good. Everything was packed nicely to-go. High Peaks is a solid neighborhood restaurant that my sister and her family are regulars at. This was my first time trying the food and I would gladly eat it again.

T O.

Yelp
We order so often that my your son said of their chicken tikka his favorite, " when I get my drivers license I'm going to pick up High Peaks every day." Ok Olivia Rodrigo ... you go on with your bad self. And bonus is how nice the family that runs it is.

Jake B.

Yelp
Was craving some Indian food and decided to try a new spot. Overall it was okay, not fantastic but scratched the itch. The lassi was quite bland, as was the tikka. Probably not somewhere I'd return, but good in a pinch.

Megha M.

Yelp
I had a lovely Diwali lunch with my family here and I'd definitely be back. The menu was simple and each dish we ordered was delicious. The bhindi stood out for me. The food was flavorful and not overly oily. There's not a whole lot of seating and the indoor space felt a bit tight so we sat outside. So far though this has been one of our favorite Indian restaurants in Oakland!

Steve B.

Yelp
What happened? This used to be the best Indian food on town. Just ordered CTM, chicken saag, chicken biryani, and butter and garlic naan. Each of the entrees were bland and lacked any kind of spicy 'kick'. The naan was dead flat, not puffy, which suggested to me it was not freshly made. Time to find a new go-to Indian place. Unfortunate.

Yelp
It's a good thing my family took me here, I doubt I would have found it otherwise. You're walking along the street and a divot appears. That's the seating area of the restaurant. We were greeted and invited to sit wherever we wanted to. Here's what we ordered: veggie samosa, prawn biryani, garlic naan, lamb korma, and fish tandoori. The veggie samosa was served searing hot, right out of the fryer. They were rather large. So large in fact, I was a little worried that it would ruin my dinner. But it was really good. I just wish we could have had a meat option. The fish tandoori was served on a bed of onions. I would have preferred salmon, but it was tilapia. Nevertheless, it was excellent. The lamb korma was very good. I liked the whole cashews in there. The lamb itself was just okay. On the plus side, it was boneless. But it wasn't the most tender lamb I've ever had. The prawn biryani was also very good. Lots of rice, but of course not that much shrimp. I had to pick at the pile a while to find the shrimp. But they are whole, unpeeled shrimp. You'll have to peel them yourself. The garlic naan was excellent. I've had garlic naan at many places, and everyone does their own spin on it. I've seen things as simple as sprinkling garlic salt or slathering on some garlic butter. High Peaks did a much better job, as you can see in the pictures. Service was friendly and unobtrusive. It's a little on the pricey side, but overall our meal was excellent!

Lily S.

Yelp
We ordered using Doordash and our food arrived in perfect condition. Everything was really good, except a few of us wanted a bit more heat. A big surprise was the garlic cheese naan, which exceeded expectations. I had imagined cheddar cheese or some type of pizza-like bread, but it's nothing like that. The cheese is very mild, maybe paneer? Anyway, the combo of garlic and this cheese on chewy naan bread was perfection. What else we ordered: + Tandoori chicken - good flavor but just a little dry. + Lamb vindaloo - delicious pieces of lamb and potatoes in a thick curry. + Chicken tikka masala - good, but the chicken pieces were a little dry as well. + Bhaingan bharta - Yum, one of my favorites. The consistency is a little thicker than other versions I've tried, and I like it. + Cholay saag - Also one of my favorites. Delicious spinach with chick peas. Really enjoyed our meal and will be ordering from here again when I'm in the area.

Yelp
We ordered takeout from High Peaks and the food was outstanding. Everything was cooked with care and the flavors were wonderful. The family there was also very welcoming when we came to pick up the food. They put a lot of love into their business. I'm so glad I found them, High Peaks will be my go-to from now on.

Syd F.

Yelp
I love this food. The only Indian restaurant I order from. I'm a loyal customer! My son and I love to get High Peaks Kitchen for dinner. Always fresh, always consistent, quick service, always DELICIOUS!

Hilda C.

Yelp
Food was great. Ambiance is cozy and nice inside. Service was so great and welcoming and nice that I wanted to hug my server fr.

Akhil K.

Yelp
We have consistently ordered takeout from here last year. We usually order the Paneer Wrap, Channa Masala, Samosa Chat, and other vegetarian curries. Food has been consistently tasty, and well portioned. Never late, they are quite fast actually. Once we ordered food for takeout in person - the owner walked out & had a cheery chat, we left with a feeling that they enjoy what they do, the team knew each other for a while. We were surprised that they spoke a few southern Indian languages (Kannada for sure) despite being Nepalese. Love it! Wonderful operating team, tasty food made quick. Will definitely return!

Nic S.

Yelp
This is one of my family's favorite restaurants. The food is delicious and not oily. Their saag daal has become a comfort food that we crave when we're feeling sick! We usually order their food to go but if you eat in the restaurant, they offer you really wonderful, complimentary chai. In addition to delicious food, the family that runs the restaurant is very warm and welcoming.

Clara D.

Yelp
Some of the best veg samosas I've had, and the chutneys that come with are so good. Chicken Tikka Masala was good too.

Skyellen B.

Yelp
When we arrived to the restaurant we were the only people there, but figured maybe that was just because it was a weeknight. We ordered the Chana masala, a spinach & lentil dish, a broccoli dish, and garlic naan. The naan was completely flat- it lacked that pillowy chewy deliciousness I associate with naan. The dishes, which we requested medium spicy, had almost no flavor. Without the mango chutney the meal would have been even more disappointing. The server was nice, but once they brought our food they never returned so we couldn't ask for salt, extra napkins, etc. we will definitely keep looking for a better Indian spot

Cam M.

Yelp
Yeah. I don't get the 5 star reviews. I got the vindaloo lamb and the Chicken Tikka Masala and they tasted pretty much the same. They get an extra star for somehow pulling that one off. That's how bland it was. We're talking cafeteria style bland. Too bad. I was seriously craving some indian flavors. Or at least flavor.

Theresa S.

Yelp
Ordered the chicken tikka masala and it was very bland and not enough sauce. Chicken byrani also lacked the normal spice I am used to by eating at other Indian restaurants. Chai Tea was the only thing worth mentioning. Will not be coming back here.

Shayla B.

Yelp
I think I've just found the holy grail of Indian food in Oakland! This Indian cuisine is... dare I say... even better than my favorite Indian food spot in Oakland that I've been frequenting religiously for the past 3 years. The fragrance, those spices, that FLAVOR! It's truly spectacular. High Peaks will take you to... "High Peaks"! Cliché, cliché, but you know you loved it! Been here a few times now and I have to say that I'm pretty impressed. Food-wise, this spot is dominating like no other. I've quickly started to work them into my regular rotation of deliciously local eats. I first tried them out for dinner and they instantly hooked me. The actual dining space isn't really much to look at. It's very small, about 10 tables max and a bit cramped inside. Also, their insulation is pretty non-existent. So if you're not into light drafts of wind blowing on you while you're eating, I'd suggest that you not sit by the door or windows. The owner himself is a real standup guy! He spent many years cooking in India and his technique definitely shines through with each meal. He was very pleasant during my first visit, but could have definitely been more attentive. During my second visit, he wasn't around and the service really seemed to plummet. The lady at the register, although welcoming, was very slow and extremely inattentive. This is the only reason why I can't rate them 5 stars. The service piece can use some work. The food, in comparison, ranks way above 5 stars in my book. What's also nice about that spot is that they offer free chai tea if you're dining in, and it's pretty damn good! So far I've tried their prawn curry, garlic cheese naan, buttered naan, and chicken tikka masala. I'm happy to report that all of these are winning dishes! The spices are incredible and the flavors are so potently fragrant. I could instantly tell that they use high quality ingredients when preparing their entrees. The spice level was also on point! If you say spicy, you'll get spicy! Loooved the spiciness of their prawn curry! It was just amazing. THE GARLIC CHEESE NAAN! Oh em gee! Freakin' orgasmic for real!! I almost cried after taking a bite out of this. I could barely handle the perfection of that naan. It's a MUST when coming here... trust me! The chicken tikka masala is marvelous too! Great flavors and great consistency. I really loved it! They have lunch specials as well but they're pretty limited compared to other places in the area. It's still worth it for the quality, but I'd definitely recommend for dinner no doubt. Looking forward to making my way around their menu!

Appurva G.

Yelp
Don't recommend if you're Indian. White people may like it (depending on whether they've had Indian food before)

Deanna N.

Yelp
Delicious food with a cute patio! No frills, quite small. It's a go to favorite for takeout.

Zoe E.

Yelp
We rabdomly picked this place tonight for a meal and it was MORE than worth it. We tried a lot and nothing disappointed. Aloo Gobi, so fresh. Perfectly cooked. Naan is thinner and sometimes crispy. So delicious. My father had Lamb Madras that was tender and perfectly spiced. My favorite was the Daal. Best I've had in years. The family here are so kind and seems to know everyone by first name. Phone hasn't stopped ringing. 5 stars.

Lanny B.

Yelp
Although listed on Yelp as Pakistani food, it seems like straightforward Indian to me. Straightforward and good. The chicken tikka masala has big hunks of white meat chicken in a flavorful sauce. It tastes pretty buttery under all the spices, and is therefore just a little rich if you like that. The paneer with housemade cheese is really good. You could order this and serve the leftovers as dip the next day. Easy to order takeout on Yelp and ready when promised. There's a nice little courtyard in front where you can sit and enjoy your meal, if not doing takeout.

Sara B.

Yelp
We ordered for the first time here over Doordash since we're in lockdown again. Service was quick and everything arrived hot and well packaged, no leaks or grease. Everything we tried was delicious! We tried the bhaingan bartha, chicken tikka masala, and lamb vindaloo. The meat was tender and juicy, and the curry was super flavorful. The only thing missing for me was the spice! I'm used to lamb vindaloo being really spicy and I have to say I missed the heat in this dish. It was completely mild. Maybe this is to accommodate more people? But for me; the spice is what makes me crave Indian food. The side orders of naan were great and paired well with the curries. The garlic naan was flavorful but not overpowering. I loved the chewy texture, and was glad it wasn't too thick or dense. Will definitely be ordering from here again!

Naeemeh J.

Yelp
Sooo delicious every time, so decently priced. A hole in the wall, our favorite at that. Chicken tikka, chicken korma, cheese garlic naan, the vegetable samosas, the okra vegetable dish, chicken korma or chicken coconut, and get the side of yogurt and mango chutney!! My absolute favorite place!

Kelly L.

Yelp
Ordered the Chicken Vindaloo, Basmati Rice, Vegetable Samosas, and Garlic Naan. Everything was hot and fresh. Workers and are nice and pricing is standard. Would recommend and come back next time I'm craving.

Zee M.

Yelp
Nice and small. Flavorful. Not too big of a fan on the kabob but okra and Chicken curry were good. Solid choice and Not heavily spiced.

Star L.

Yelp
Power went out tonight and we've been craving Indian food anyway, so we thought we'd try something new to us and in our neighborhood. We've walked by this place a lot so it seemed like the perfect choice for takeout to eat by candlelight. We liked the saag daal, however the chicken tikka masala was really dry and pretty bland. We even ordered both white meat and thigh, and even the thigh was desiccated. The real issue, though, was that we ordered lamb korma but when we returned home from picking it up, it turned out to be cauliflower and potatoes. Then, when I called to tell them we got the wrong thing, they insisted we got the lamb, not cauliflower. Obviously we were going to have to bring the cauliflower back with us to prove we got the wrong thing. On our second try we got the lamb, which was fine (though not a single cashew to be found), but I was pretty surprised when they took the cauliflower back - they did not even offer to let us keep it for the inconvenience of having to drive there and back twice (not to mention the insinuation that we were lying). That's some pretty lousy customer service, and since the food was overall unremarkable, we will definitely not be back.

Taylor Z.

Yelp
Really solid Indian place, the naans here are definitely the highlight. Freshly made with crunchy exterior and great balance of toppings. Not too oily and just the right sizing to get me full (you could honestly share one order between two if you aren't super famished). I had the lamb vindaloo and lamb tiki masala. Both were excellent and very filling. The tiki masala was very rich and the vindaloo was tasty. Not much else to comment besides come hungry :D

Marty N.

Yelp
Tasty, not oil-soaked. Do not be disabused by the modest place. The owner/chef chose to not succumb to our silly desire for veneer. There's even a little outdoor seating.

Tramy V.

Yelp
Casual indian restaurant with limited seating. The food is not very oil, however that being said, it lacked a lot of flavor also. Overall, the Lamb Spinach Curry and Chicken Tikka Masala were both on the bland side. The chicken pieces were dry. The rice didn't taste like it was cooked right either. The chicken tandoori was also not as tender as other places I've tried. They do provide complimentary tea, which wasn't very full bodied. The service was decent, but the waitress didn't seem to know what the dishes were and how to describe them correctly. Service was lacking after we got the order in and the food was placed on our table. Overall, it's an alright experience if you're in the area and want take out.

Alexandra B.

Yelp
We get takeout from here all the time and it's always been consistent. I love the chicken tikka and the garlic cheese naan is so drool worthy.

Jerry P.

Yelp
Very mediocre and overall we were disappointed. We expected better based on the reviews aggregate score, so this was a surprising anomaly for the usually reliable Yelp reviews IMHO. The food was very bland, lacking not just any trace of heat but no depth of flavor or complexity found in good South Asian cooking. We had a lamb curry and prawn curry and though described with typical veggies they were only there as a purée, except the prawns did have small pieces of tomato. No thrill at all for the taste buds. The naan was frankly the worst we've had in quite a long time. Literally tough to chew! Again it was bland, actually pretty much flavorless - even the garlic naan. It was also not properly leavened, which may have contributed to the chewiness. Rice as others noted was extra (better order one per entree minimum) and entree portion size middling, which was less bothersome as we had no intention of saving the leftovers had there been any substantive amount afterwards. At $50 for two (2entrees, rice & naan) including tax and 20% tip it won't be a spot we return too anytime soon.

Edgar S.

Yelp
Great food, great service! Came to High Peaks Kitchen with friends this weekend and loved it! To begin, we wanted to have an appetizer none of us had tried before, we decided to go with Fish Pakora, small pieces of fish dipped in lentil batter and fried served with two different Indian sauces. The Fish Pakora was a great decision - we all enjoyed the combination of the fish and lentil taste, they were crispy but no oily and the sauces were a great complement. We also ordered Chicken Tikka Masala, which had tender meat and a flavorful but not very creamy sauce. In addition to that we ordered Prawn Curry - which again had high quality prawns dipped in flavorful and plentiful curry. Finally we order white basmati rice - which was good but nothing special and cheese and garlic naan. The cheese naan was amazing - the cheese was melted all throughout and the bread was toasted and flavorful. Overall, give this place a try if you're in the area!

Len R.

Yelp
Fresh tasting. Spiced right Different from Southern Indian food. My goto North Oakland Indian food.

Thielson D.

Yelp
I'm a huge fan of this spot. Formerly Currylicious, they do the typical Indian dishes most people are familiar with. The difference is the food here seems lighter, less oily, with dare I say a Nepali vibe to it - less creamy, less greasy food (if that makes sense). Regardless, I have never had anything I didn't like here. I'm a big fan of the Biryani here. The saag paneer is the perfect example of how their food seems less greasy than other places. You barely taste any cream, and you can really taste the spinach, which I really appreciate. Instead of plain Naan (which don't get me wrong - is also good) I go for the aloo naan or the aloo paratha, and i usually go for an order of veggie samosas too because lets be real. The food here has always been consistent. Service is efficient, but the location is also (what rhymes with consistent and efficient... ummm. Magnificent? Lol) right on college avenue they have a big outdoor seating area in the front for those warm days with the prayer flags hung across the patio. The place itself is tiny but they managed to create some arches inside that gives this place a cool aesthetic as in addition to the awesome food. I always bring friends here and it has never disappointed.

Stephanie Y.

Yelp
So back in Jersey, you can get so much amazing Indian food that I haven't quite found over in the Oaktown area... until now. High Peaks doesn't disappoint. Portions aren't huge, but the taste and quality is there. A ton of vegetarian, lamb, chicken options make it an easy win for all. They do ask you to specify your heat preference, which again, makes it an easy win for all. I went spicy and it added some great heat, but not unbearable. I opted for a broccoli entree in a spicy tomato sauce and the coconut chicken curry and a huge win for both. The broccoli was fresh broccoli, none of that frozen stuff. Crispy and refreshing. The real winner goes to that creamy and perfectly cooked chicken topped with shreds of real coconut. By the end, I was shamefully spooning the sauce into my mouth... like an animal. Rice is extra and at $3, a pretty huge portion. No naan this time, but a ton of different varieties. Indoor seating isn't anything to speak of. They could use some sprucing up, and the front outdoor patio is nice. Service is ok, at the time I was there (a late weekend lunch), it was just the owner and his cooks. They offer up free in house chai that wasn't my cup of tea, but it was hot and milky!

Marlon T.

Yelp
* take out order review High Peaks Kitchen makes delicious Indian food with lots of spice! We were not in the mood to cook dinner, and never really order Indian takeout. Thank goodness we found High Peaks, they have an extensive menu with lots of veggie options! We love samosas and noticed a dish named Samosas Chaat, this was a great discovery!! Its like a deconstructed Samosa dish with garbanzos, mint chutney and cilantro. Highly recommend this dish! We also ordered Chicken Vindaloo and Saag Daal w garlic naan. All the dishes had great spice balance and the Vindaloo packed a solid punch! I give them 4/5 Stars because I didn't dine in and the delivery took a while and wasn't hot. But honestly it was worth the wait, that Samosa Chaat is the jam! Will update this review after visiting the restaurant.

Sophie K.

Yelp
AMAZING GARLIC CHEESE NAAN. Yummy self-serve chai tea. This is one of the best-kept secrets on College Avenue. And the ethos of this restaurant is beautiful. If you read the first page of their menu (I posted a blurry photo) you can see how much they care about their culture and food. It's small, not fancy but almost never busy.

W0rld P.

Yelp
Suepr fucken yummy. Havent ate chicken in a hot vegetarian minute! Probably wont after this cause the chicken was on the bit dry rubber side, but the tikka masala was soo creamy. Veggie biryani was also smack dab in the middle of flavortown tastie. Shops under the guise of "Indian" but I'd believe the flavors to be more of Nepalese tongue - i'm not one to quote on that.

Tanner K.

Yelp
Absolutely fantastic Indian food. Authentic and tasty, the best I've had in the East Bay. The veggie korma was particularly good. Highly recommend.

Suz O.

Yelp
I love this place. I used to live in the area and have missed it since moving away. I was able to go back tonight and it was as comforting as always. Great food, quaint interior, and friendly staff.

Ambessa C.

Yelp
This is the best, most consistent and reliable Indian food in the area. Now lemme dig into my bhindi masala, Naan and Samosa. Mmmmhhh!

julia p.

Yelp
Delicious food. We picked up lamb vindaloo and chicken tikka (I had basmati rice at home from a previous meal). Good portions, very rich and tasty sauces. The chicken in the tikka is tandoori and breast meat, so it can be a little dry but I shred it and mix with the sauce. The staff is always friendly and helpful.

Vi Y.

Yelp
Small quaint restaurant with friendly service . Garlic cheese naan was awesome. Basmati rice was really dry/plain. We ordered a chicken dish and a lamb dish. Both were so dry and not edible. The eggplant dish was the best out of the 3.

Rik B.

Yelp
We were there for the first time tonight. Imaginative menu, and all 4 meals we had were very tasty. Most friendly, courteous service. So happy to have this in our neighborhood!
