The Best New Restaurant Openings in NYC, August 2023 | Eater NY

"I visited a cocktail bar and restaurant inside Tempo by Hilton Times Square that opened in early August, placing it steps from the New Year's Eve ball-drop location. It is at 1568 Broadway, near Seventh Avenue." - Emma Orlow

The restaurant is very pretty. The location is great , it’s right in Time Square. The menu is very poor though: only 4 dishes for entree: salmon, chicken, burger and steak. We ordered steak and burger. They were good. Tuna tartar was good as well. Portions are not big. Price wise - the entrees are )30-35. What annoyed me big time is that the gratuity was already included in the bill. Why????? Nowhere it said on the menu that the gratuity would be included .. So just be aware of that. I believe it’s about 22%.. since when is it customary to charge you tips right away? And the amount they want?

Not worth it. I ordered two cheeseburgers with two tots (an $8 add-on). The receipt clearly shows I paid for two, but when I went back to ask, the server told me they were “combined into one box” and that the extra box of chips was given “as an additional service since the kitchen was almost closing.” My box had exactly 22 tots—and I didn’t want chips, I wanted the two orders of tots I paid for. For comparison, I looked at another customer’s review posted just a day ago. Their plate with one order had about 18–20 tots. So paying extra for a second order doesn’t really add up. If this is the quality and service they stand by, it’s disappointing. As someone from the city, it’s honestly embarrassing—especially since so many travelers come here expecting better. Save your money and find better food and service elsewhere. There’s plenty in the city. 🤍

Highball was a wonderful place to visit, day and night. We stayed at the hotel, so we actually frequented this spot more than once. Our first night we ate dinner here. It was absolutely delicious. I had the steak and it was wonderful! We shared a cheesecake for dessert. We came here for breakfast, which was really good. I will say, if you are in a crunch for time and it's busy, consider going somewhere else. They get really swamped in the morning. Keep your receipt. If there's any mistakes they are gracious and kind and will fix it. Great service! Our last night in NYC, we came back for a nightcap and dessert one last time. We had our server, Sagar, again. He was so kind and attentive. This was the perfect way to end our trip. Definitely consider stopping here for a meal, or at least drinks. Thank you Highball staff and chefs, for starting and ending our trip the right way!

Google
The over priced food was okay not worth the price. The service was very lacking. They don't need to provide good service since they already add a 22% gratuity to your bill. The only reason we will return would be to use up our Hilton diamond credit if we keep our upcoming reservation at the Tempo.

On the 11th floor, a very spacious restaurant that has a sign to seat yourself, so we had the luxury of choosing our own table from what's available. We got lucky that our server was a very polite and hospitable man named Greg. We ordered the tots, spinach & artichoke dip, caesar salads with grilled salmon, and the cheese board. I didn't take pictures, because I indulged immediately. I loved the creaminess of the spinach & artichoke dip. The salmon was fresh & cooked perfectly, and the cheese board had generous amounts of four cheeses - all delicious. The bill included the gratuity, which was helpful, so that we didn't have to calculate. My husband and I left feeling really good. I took pictures from the lobby of the 11th floor.

I recently stayed at Tempo by Hilton and was very disappointed with my dining experience at Highball. The service was curt and unaccommodating — even basic requests like lettuce on a burger or a small salad were refused. The burger arrived without fries, and the food didn’t justify the $160 price tag. Worse, an automatic gratuity was added without being mentioned, and I unknowingly tipped again. Paying over $180 for lackluster food and service felt unacceptable. The hotel itself was pleasant, but Highball needs to improve guest service, value, and billing transparency. Updating my review, management was extremely responsive and credited my charges and was very professional. Thank you

Google
Ate there with my sister, and I was very disappointed . The food was pretty good, but my sister did not receive her entire dinner, and her drinks were terrible. They did give us a free dessert to compensate us, which was nice. Our biggest issue was the service; the waitress was terrible. The restaurant was not busy, but she barely came around….and her attitude was terrible. Then the restaurant has the nerve to automatically charge 22% gratuity. Excuse me? I get automatically setting gratuity for large parties, but there were only two of us. I should get to decide how much I want to tip, and I would have grudgingly left her 15%.

Google
This is such a nice bar in the heart of Manhattan! I love the layout, and the staff are so accommodating and friendly. We had a few apps and drinks. I really enjoyed my drink, and the green hummus was delicious. The tater tots are great, especially the cheese sauce!!! I do prefer them crispier, so I’d order them well done next time.

Yelp
The perfect whiskey bar within steps of the elevator leading to our room. Dimly lit, mellow R&B emitting from the background, and a lovely bartender that makes an excellent Old Fashioned Pricey! Definitely paying for the ambiance!

We ordered steak and burger. They were good. Tuna tartar was good as well. The chocolate cake that was called crunchy- had only crunchy coconut flakes , no other crunchiness . It's like mousse . Didn't like it. Portions are not big. Price wise - the entrees are )30-35. What annoyed me big time is that the gratuity was already included in the bill. Why????? Yelp
The Highball is located inside the Tempo Hilton Times Square and the window seats are great for sipping cocktails, noshing and people watching below. I stopped in for a cold drink in the evening and learned that after 2:00pm only cocktails and mocktails are available - one cannot even get a plain Coca-Cola or sprite...odd, but ok, and since I wanted something refreshing but not alcoholic; I ordered a 'free-spirited/mocktail' Amalfi Toast (there is a spirited/alcoholic version as well) which was as beautiful as it was delicious and my server was awesome as was the service. I could have had a pitcher of those and I need to recreate it at home this summer. I was off to a show, so couldn't linger but it was a beautiful moment in my trip to NYC.

Yelp
Beware! 22% added gratuity automatically added to your bill. I ordered a Manhattan, and it was so watered down, that I asked for a new drink. When I got my old fashioned. It was the same. The drink just tasted like really cheap liquor, and water. I ended up not drinking it and wasting $24. The cookie skillet was OKAY, came out of the oven hot and ready, but just didn't hit the spot. I had higher hopes for a hotel bar, but when "Jim Bean whiskey" was listed as an ingredient in their listed cocktails, I should have been clued in.

Yelp
Came here for an event where the sponsors paid for an open bar, so I was pretty much helping myself to various drinks to try. One drink I'd probably pass on is the Hasta La Matcha, which they combine tequila and matcha tea with a black lava salt rim. The flavor just didn't go together. I did enjoy the Black is the New Pink, which is a mezcal drink with a hint of grapefruit flavor. If you want something more stiff, then the Toki-O-Drift is your drink, which is a whiskey based drink. The space itself is pretty spacious. The bartenders are pretty professional. There were hor d'ourves being served, which tasted great. Mainly snacked on sliders. The mini hot dogs and pappardelle were also tasty.

Yelp
The food is good, but pricey. It's Times Square, so I expected that. I dined at around 8pm on a Tuesday night and the place was virtually empty except for a few people attending the same conference as me. What kind of bothered me was at the end of the meal and receiving my tab. They added a 22% tip between the cost of the meal and tax. I wouldn't have noticed had I not needed to photograph my receipt for a work expense. I feel like I tip very well, but something doesn't sit right with me having the tip added AND having a suggested tip (which would be additional) at the bottom. That's pretty deceptive. I'm here for another few days at this hotel, but won't be back to Highball.

Yelp
Love this restaurant and bar inside the tempo Hilton Hotel! It's a very comfortable space. The wraparound bar is great and then they have window seating for dining if you'd like. I've stopped in every night for a Moscow Mule. One evening we then also ate dinner. I had appetizers and my husband had the brick chicken which he really loved. He had what was called a prefix theater meal. It came with the chicken and bread, potatoes vegetables, and it also came with a special drink which he gave to me and I loved it.!! It was called the Lady in Rouge. It is made with kettle one botanical grapefruit, and rose vodka,Lyres pink London Spirit, coconut water, sparkling wine and hibiscus flower 23! Fantastic!!!! Service here is very good. They are extremely attentive.!

Yelp
Stayed at this fabulous hotel called Tempo in the theatre district and tried their restaurant called Highball. It's a cool place to have a drink and a pretheatre dinner. The location is perfect near anything theatre. We came in for a little dinner at around 10pm and we're told the kitchen closes at 1015pm. Got our drinks, Cybernetic Sauvignon and Vodka Martini to start and had the Hanger steak with Caesar salad and the Impossible burger with tots. The steak was rough to taste for medium well and the burger looked like it had seen better days. Maybe because we came in 15 mins before the kitchen closes that our food did not come out first rate. And the toys were dried as heck...where was the dipping sauce. Forgot to ask. It was kinda expensive to say the least. There are better places to dine of course. Nevertheless our waitress Laura was friendly and courteous. Try it for the drinks though!

Yelp
Came here for dinner after seeing Chicago on Broadway. Didn't really want to be bothered with packed crowds so we thought grabbing dinner inside the hotel would be our best option ... boy were we wrong. It was fairly crowded when we arrived and the hostess was slowly seating new tables while giving the option to sit at the bar (which was already full). The wait was EXTENSIVE. We were seated at a table and it was nearly an hour before we received drinks or had our orders taken. Once greeted, our waiter did tell us that there were only two staff members working and ensured he'd do his best to accommodate us for the wait. Gregory did EVERYTHING he promised. He honestly saved the night and our overall experience here. I ordered the meatball appetizer and the seared salmon as my entree. Both dishes were delicious. Our drinks from the bar were good as well.

Yelp
Beautiful hotel restaurant on the 12th floor. Had dinner with pulsd here and it was amazing. Steak was delicious, cocktails were on point. Staff lovely. We'll be back! Nikki xx

Yelp
They automatically add a 22% gratuity so they offer crappy service. All my food did not come with my meal and my drink was empty halfway through my meal. Did not see the server until we were finished eating. The server had an attitude the second I said something about missing food. The manager had zero desire to talk to us when she was told there was an issue. The food and service are not worth the money.

Yelp
After dinner in Little Italy we returned to Tempo by Hilton Times Square. Hersheys is right across the street but... The jazzy music brought us here. Wow! What have I been missing all my life? The music, decor and the BEST server!! Gregory brought us a larger table- so intuitive. Hubs whacked his chocolate dessert. I always check in first so my ice cream was melting into my warm apple crisp. He made me an iced coffee. Hit the spot.I asked for 2 more half and half and he got me 4. Super intuitive cuz I drink my iced coffee with lots of cream. I hope he becomes a manager soon if he wants to be one. Super fast, efficient and gorgeous eye contact and smile. Great way to end our first night in New York.

Yelp
The server was great; very attentive. Drinks are expensive but tasty. Nice ambiance. I went with a friend to see a comedy show and it did not disappoint. DJ was also awesome.

Yelp
At Highball, the restaurant and cocktail bar onsite of the Tempo Hilton Hotel in Times Square, a table for one during Happy Hour is no problem. The cocktail bar menu features both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. This evening, I opted for a Nespresso served by an energetic 20-something creative type with an 100-watt who could easily appear onstage in a nearby Broadway theater. The moderate-tempo vibe was encouraged by the Lo-Fi music playing in the background---a perfect beat to ease from work to play. The Happy Hour goers ranged from Late Boomers to Gen X, Y, and Z. They donned business casual wear offset by sneakers. But enough of this people-watching and onto the headliner of this show -- the Adobo Chicken Wings! When I say, "Pièce de résistance," there's no pun intended. These slow roasted wings sautéed in spices, chili and soy sauces became a crispy but tender on the inside treat. The Filipino-inspired dish is my first but as a chicken wing connoisseur, the Adobo chicken wings at Highball rank high on the list! The pricey entree is $24 and according to the menu, a 22% gratuity is included at the time of this post. Enjoy!

Yelp
$30 for a Hennessy and ginger ale - never again! Cute bar but those prices are a little too steep for me
google avatar

Amanda M.

Yelp
It's located in Tempo by Hilton and with any hotel restaurant you should expect to have high prices and mediocre quality. However, I at least would've expected to get all my ingredients for a $17 Açaí Bowl (missing banana and honey) after waiting 28 minutes to order. If you're staying here , skip this place and head to the street food below or plentiful pizza or coffee shops within the block. So much better and more authentic NYC!

Yelp
Specific shoutouts to both Gregory and Chanelle that helped us multiple times while we stayed at Tempo. We came in around 10:15pm and got quickly seated, the hostess letting us know the kitchen closes soon, so we came at the right time. Gregory was prompt in getting us water and taking our order to help get us food between the kitchen closed up. We got the cheeseburger which came with potato chips, and the apple crisp crumble. Both were frankly really good, and we came back for the cheeseburger the next night again! Gregory had a great smile that made you feel welcomed, and never made us feel like a burden for asking for more water or anything. Chanelle helped us in the morning with the breakfast rush, and she was helpful and friendly, even during the rush. She saw me the next morning at breakfast, and said she personally made our smoothies up to the brim of the cup because she saw us come in. When you're remembered the next day as a customer, it just warms you up. Thank you both for your hospitality and friendliness! The breakfast selection was great, as we got the same thing three mornings in a row: ham & cheese croissant, PB protein smoothies, black coffee (which was great!), breakfast burrito, and the herb scramble. A great restaurant inside the hotel. Even the bathrooms were super clean, and the lighting was perfect for a mirror selfie, haha

Yelp
Restaurant has a nice atmosphere but we were brought the wrong dish and it took 20 minutes to have it fixed and afterwords we were brought the wrong dessert and when we told our server he told us the kitchen was closed and we weren't offered anything for the inconvenience. The bill included an automatic 22% gratuity which I believe was undeserved. Overall was extremely disappointed.

Yelp
I'm staying at the Tempo hotel which is BEAUTIFUL. Definitely recommend the hotel. The High Ball, however, has been a mixed experience. The ambiance is great. The service however was SUPER slow, the steak was overcooked, the prices are high, AND gratuity was added to the bill before the check suggested we add MORE gratuity. I want to like this place, I really do. But sadly I think in nyc where there's lots of options, this isn't the best choice.

Erin S.

Yelp
We're guests at the hotel so out of convenience tried to go here for lunch. We waited but no one ever acknowledged us, so after waiting quite a long time, we ended up leaving. I don't normally leave reviews on service, but not being acknowledged when staff saw us was bad. They may be fine for happy hour or dinner, or breakfast. The ambiance seems fine and good if not wanting or having time to travel. I don't plan a on trying again so will make plans outside the hotel for the rest of our stay.
