I know this is long guys, but I hope it helps!
My husband and I got married at the Highgrove Estates a month ago today! We got engaged the week before Christmas of 2012, I immediately started looking at places to get married because I knew they would book quickly, knowing a lot of people get engaged around Christmas.
We made a list of a couple different places, but the Highgrove was top on my list to see first. I emailed, called and left voicemails until my face turned blue! I didn't hear anything back. So we kind of gave up and went to venues we couple get appointments at. We went to one that was close by the Highgrove and it was the worst We figured since we were so close by we would just see if we could walk around and look.
This was about mid January now. We pulled up and accidentally barged in on someone else's appointment (I apologized profusely!), but we couldn't get ahold of anyone to get an appointment! Susan was nice enough to still let us walk around and look. As soon as we walked outside we knew we found the place for us! We asked Susan if we could make an appointment as soon as possible, she asked me my name and knew I had been emailing her, but never responded (kind of a pain!). Susan said she would be at the bridal show the next week and asked if we could come there and schedule an appointment, we said we didn't know if we could make it, but we would try. So, we left feeling great and immediately on the phone changing plans around the next week to go to the show just to book this appointment!
We made to the show and booked our wedding day! While we were wandering around the show we found our photographer as well (Warren McCormack). It was great!
So, the planning really gets started! We sit down to sign the official contract and talk about menus and pricing. She wanted us to figure out a menu package that day (just to have on the book, it could be changed). We were a little surprised because we have never had the food before so we didn't know what we were getting ourselves into. We came to the conclusion that the menu pricing was a little high for our heavy lunch afternoon wedding. So we asked Susan if we could tweak it a little bit for a lunch instead of dinner. She said she would need to call the chef to make sure on pricing of what we had talked about and she would email me more details, which was fantastic! We at least had a different option. We were also informed that the cake was included with the menu packages. Knowing that we wanted a package, but different pricing myself, my mother and my groom as specifically if the cake would be included in our package as we all remember back in February that it was, three peoples memories can't be wrong right! We will get to that later!
Everything is going well with the planning until about a month before the big day! I get a call from Susan saying that our cake was not included and that we need to pay the rest to Sweet Memories Bakery, keep in mind we have already "paid" for our cake to Sweet Memories (they charge extra for the different flavoring that are not included in the package). I was quite stunned! I called my husband and mother to make sure that I wasn't wrong and that the cake was included in our contract (granted it is not in the contract, we looked) they both agreed that I was correct in this point, but did not fight it because we couldn't find the email stating this and we needed a cake! So, my husband paid the extra $500 to the bakery 10 days before the wedding!
The wedding day comes and it hectic and chaotic as it always is. The girls and I are at the salon getting hair and makeup done when I get a phone call from the florist at 12:30 asking me if I had center pieces there. I told her that I was going to use the ones that the Highgrove provided. Shelley said that the Highgrove did not have them, that they keep them in an off site facility and we needed to order them if we wanted to use them. So, a little panicked at this point because I'm getting married in 2 1/2 hours! Shelley said that she had some at her shop that we were more than welcome to use and she would be on her way right then to get them. Matters all cleared up I continued to relax and enjoy my day.
We get to the Highgrove and everything moves quickly! Pictures getting dressed and some snacks that the Highgrove provides for the girls. Amber (the wedding coordinator) shows me pictures of what the center pieces look like, but at this point I'm not worried about them! Amber also informed me they would take the cost. The wedding goes as smooth as possible. The groom and I get so many compliments on how beautiful the venue was and how great the food is. It was great went off without a hitch! Well, a few but whose counting!
Pros: venue is beautiful, food is amazing, Amber (our wedding coordinator, she's amazing!), having a list of other vendors who have worked there before
Cons: COMMUNICATION, not having an available lunch menu, leaving out details, mail payments
