Bars and Nightlife in Asheville

"This is one of the OG Asheville breweries, having opened in 1994. After a free tour, order a pint or a flight of beer in Highland Brewing Company‘s simple tasting room. The spacious taproom has a stage, room for dancing, and plenty of tables for seating. It’s known for its stouts and IPAs, so try Black Watch." - MATADOR_NETWORK

3 Best Day Trips from Charlotte

"This is an anchor of the Asheville beer scene, so it's a great place to begin your North Carolina beer education. Bring your beer nerds, your buddies, your book club to sip and relax. There's room to chat, you're not going to be rushed because they need your table, and there's so much to try. It's all about beer, of course, and the iconic brews for the brand include the Gaelic Ale, a red ale, and a Rising Haze IPA, but exciting releases range from the Strawberry Milkshake IPA to a Czech Pilsner named Angelico. If you'd like a sample sip or two, the bar staff is friendly and will oblige. This is an independent, female-run company, and the staff reflects that spirit. The company invests in the community, and the staff seems happy working, busy, efficient, and always moving to pour beer, cash out folks, or clean." - Stephanie Burt

One of the most elaborate breweries I have ever been to! Huge inside with a variety of seating. The “meadow” is the big outdoor area with a space for a band and volleyball courts. There were three conventional food trucks plus an ice cream truck plus two smaller food vendors when I was there. The brisket tacos I had from Smoky Mountain View were great—a hint of sweetness, some spice, and great brisket. The taco shells were also distinctively tasty. There are a number of picnic tables but you may want to bring your own outdoor. Hairs. They even have a playground! Staff was also friendly and efficient!

Google
Amazed at how much land this place has! We started our visit with 9 holes of disc golf which was fun and challenging. We were there for their 4th of July celebration where there were a number of great food trucks on site. Beers and wine were great with live music and relaxed vibe.

Google
I came here after visiting the WNC which was close by. I loved the set up of the brewery and the activities available. It was too cold to play disc golf ($5 to rent discs) but there was a volleyball league taking place during my visit. Lots of space, dog friendly and a few food trucks to choose from. I’m definitely going to come back to visit this brewery

Google
Highland Brewing will make you wonder why your own hometown isn't better! This place has great beer, no doubt; however, it's the food trucks that line the parking lot, the beach volleyball courts, the frisbee golf course, the outdoor picnic and concert spaces, the cornhole boards, and the generally fantastic atmosphere that make this place a real winner! If you're new to Asheville or just visiting, this is a must-visit spot! Family and pet-friendly brewery, public house, and spaces!

Google
This brewery has a huge outdoor area with opportunities to buy drinks, food from food trucks, a stage for live music and a great play area for kids! Plenty of shade and sunny areas to suit your needs. We’ll definitely be back!

Google
This is a large local brewery with lovely indoor and outdoor spaces. It is very kid friendly with a large outdoor playground and walking trails. They have live music and multiple food trucks. Of course, they have a large selection of beer on tap, and they have multiple indoor and outdoor bars.

Google
Disc golf course is open and doing great! We played the back 9 today, had some beers and a wonderful time. Love this place!

Google
The event team at Highland Brewing went above and beyond to make our day special. The customer service was excellent, and they made sure everything was set up and ready so we could focus on enjoying ourselves. Our venue coordinator, Bailey, was organized, friendly, and made us confident that everything was taken care of. The venue itself is beautiful, with so many flexible options to make the space feel personal and unique, including a special small batch beer for our reception and personalized pint glasses as favors. Our daytime rooftop ceremony with barrel room reception followed by an after party out in a Silo Cabana were all so perfect. Our guests loved celebrating us at Highland and we’re so glad we chose Highland for our wedding day!

Yelp
Really cool brewery. They have so much space. They sell cool merchandise inside. Inside they had their main beers and then options for multiple small batch brews. Outside there is so much outdoor seating. Another bar to order from outside. Big sand volleyball courts. When we went there was no band playing, but there's a big area for music. And even a play area for kids. And there are bathrooms back by the outdoor area as well. Beer was tasty.

Yelp
Wow!! Huge brewery. A couple of years ago, we went to the stand-alone bar in downtown Asheville and had a fabulous time. This trip we were looking for live music in Asheville. Just so happens a Pink Floyd tribute band ( Pinkish Floyd ) was playing here. We had no idea that Highland Brewing had another location that encompassed acres and acres of space. There was a huge bar, or a couple of them. There was a wedding reception going on in another large area. The Meadows, where we saw the band, was gigantic. There were parts of Highland Brewing we didn't even see. Anyway, we had an amazing night out. Great beers. Great music. They are about 6 miles out of downtown Asheville, but we will definitely be back the next time we are in Asheville.

Yelp
Great fun family place to listen to music and drink beer. Kids welcome and friendly welcome from bartenders.

Yelp
Hear me out .... If you're not a kombucha fan, this is where you become one. My hunni and I came here for a wedding this week and enjoyed a stunning venue. The mountain backdrop made the perfect scenery for our dear-friend's special day. HOWEVER... the kombucha..... that's what I'm here to talk about. As I'm not a drinker, this is my go-to & wow it is 10/10. Freshly brewed in house, with just the right amount of sweetness. So yes, this is me recommending a brewery solely because of the kombucha.

Yelp
Super friendly bar staff and good beer options with a comprehensive menu. Unfortunately, on a Friday night we came at 9 pm and the live music was just ending. In a city that claims to have so much live music it was a bit disappointing that the moment we arrived, the band finished their show.
google avatar

Brandi M.

Yelp
Love the atmosphere and music choices they bring in. We have not experienced the frisbee golf part yet, but hope to soon. Bring more outdoor concerts please!!
google avatar

Joel R.

Yelp
Highlands is the original brewery and oldest in Asheville if I'm not mistaken. I've been drinking their beers for many years now and have never been disappointed. The brewery is very nice and roomy. Don't pass it up!

Yelp
SUCH A FUN PLACE! I came for a group meet up, around 30 people total. The space is large with lots of places for groups. We split up into a few different tables. On the day I went, there was a fun show going on, put on by Divine! It was some fun entertainment and was interactive with the crowd. I'm not a beer fan, but I tend to tolerate coffee flavored beer. I got the Daily Grind which is coconut and coffee flavored. I liked it! I'd definitely order it again. They had a food truck outside as well as a hot dog stand. They rotate their food truck options depending on the day. My nacho fries were perfectly paired with the beer. My only complaint is the closing time!!! I'll definitely be coming back though. FYI, dog friendly even inside!
google avatar

Kathy V.

Yelp
Enormous! Brewery with a frisbee golf course, several beach volleyball courts, a rooftop bar, an open air concert space and plenty of space for food trucks to set up! We came for a brief visit before heading to the nearby soccer fields for a tournament. I was immediately astounded by the size of the place, and equally grateful that they have adequate parking to accommodate the amount of people who could fill up the space! I got a fruited wheat beer to enjoy during our short visit in, and it was pretty dang good. Also good were all the puppers on the dog friendly patio! They had several food trucks to get a bite from, but I wasn't terribly hungry and they lines were pretty darn long, so be patient if it happens to be a busy weekend evening. We had a nice, though brief, visit to this brewery. I would love to revisit it on a future trip to Asheville.

Yelp
What a cool brewery. It's huge, with plenty of space and seating and parking. I love all of the natural light and the food trucks that come and park outside. The service was good and informative and our beer flight was all fantastic.
google avatar

Yelp
Highland Brewery is an awesome spot to visit for a local craft brew. The decor is so cozy and colorful. I love the paint scheme of the mountains. You always find a great local band to dance & sing to while enjoying your beverage. There are delicious food trucks outside if you need to fill your belly with some yummy eats. It is kid and pet friendly, and plenty of places to sit and chill. It is located right off the freeway for easy access. Hit up Highland Brewery and check it out for yourself!
google avatar

Yelp
Highland Brewery's barrel room was my choice for proposing to my brewery-loving fiancée. Jen's mini tour and discussions with Erin, the Wedding Sales Assistant Manager, and Marissa, a photographer, enhanced our special day. Special thanks to them. The Creole food truck added a delightful touch, creating a vibe. I wouldn't pick a different place if I had to do it over again. We're even considering using the same space for our fall reception. Thank you all so much.
google avatar

Yelp
Beer was pretty delicious and it was a wonderful place to bring our two year old. There was a huge sandbox in a shaded glen and my husband and I were able to enjoy each others company and the atmosphere while our two year old made friends and had fun!

Yelp
As a local Highland is not near the top of my list of best breweries in town, but I never pass up a chance to visit and here's why: Excellent venue. Large indoor area plenty of varied seating options and an adjacent gift shop. Huge outdoor area with multiple activities, separate bar, and permanent bathrooms. Rotating food trucks on-premises. Plentiful parking. Great beer. Sure, their core beers aren't winning awards against the likes of Zillicoah, Cellarest, Burial, etc around town but you can always find several solid beers on draft. I gravitate (pun intended?) towards their impressive small batch, higher-ABV experimental beers at the main bar. Last year's barrel-aged Baltic Porter was the best I've had of that style beer anywhere. Friendly Employees. I have always had great service from seemingly happy staff and have a few acquaintances who have nothing but excellent feedback about working there. No pretentiousness to be found here at all. The owner even personally carried my Cold Mountain order out to my car a few years ago. Local Business. They continue to be family-owned in a market that's continually trending toward larger more established craft breweries selling to foreign conglomerates (I'm looking at you New Belgium). They have been and continue to be active in the community. They host concerts and all sorts of events throughout the year like local group runs and even their own organized "Night Flight" race.

Yelp
Great beer, great crew and a wonderful facility with plenty of space. Local food trucks were busy all day and the music made it a perfect afternoon.
google avatar

Kristy A.

Yelp
Great atmosphere. Great beer! Im an IPA GIRL and the Daycation was delicious. They have a food truck On site, but I didn't have the food. Overall I'd absolutely go back! Fun spot and tasty beers!
google avatar

Annamarie A.

Yelp
Had a blast here! Great setup and loved the disc golf course, too! They definitely have something for the whole family here! They had a couple of food trucks there too, one with hot dogs and veggie dogs, and another that my youngest got a chicken salad sandwich and potato salad from. We'll be back!
google avatar

Rod J.

Yelp
Great offerings for lovers of all types of beers. Great atmosphere with indoor and outdoor areas including the Meadows section and frisbee golf course. Very unique setting and very friendly and knowledgeable servers. Relaxing spot and one of the top breweries in NC.
google avatar

Stephen C.

Yelp
Great Beer,Staff and environment for fun. They often host outdoor artistic venues and market places, live music.
google avatar

Mike O.

Yelp
We had come to Highland since they are one of the first breweries in North Carolina and weren't disappointed. The brewery was very large and had tons of seating inside and there was a separate area out in back that was large itself. You won't be lacking for seating even though the day we came it was extremely crowded. There are also food trucks and vendors outside to get something to eat while there. I tried the Barrel Aged Baltic Porter that was rich and creamy, the dark Porter was excellent and I wish I had gotten another, but maybe next time. The pourers were friendly and it looked like the place was kid and dog friendly since there were plenty of both.
google avatar

Anthony I.

Yelp
What can I say, I love this place. It's totally worth the few minutes in the car. Their beer selection is fantastic. Always something playful always staples, definitely something for everyone. The venue itself is gigantic and the outdoor disc golf course makes a great place to walk your pup.
google avatar

Vineet C.

Yelp
Wow! Was in town for a bachelor party and hit this place up after many days of drinking to just relax. This site was absolutely enormous. Lots of places to hang out whether indoor or outdoor. Which was great for a large party like ours. Lots of beers to try and best of all there were food trucks on site for when we got hungry. So no fear if you are vegan or a meat consumer there is food for you. I really appreciated that they had taps both inside and outside so we didn't have to make a long hike every time to get some drinks. If you feel athletic too, they had sand volleyball available but you can't take alcohol inside and there is a fee to play.
google avatar

Alexis R.

Yelp
We went to their S&W Market location and loved their ale! I'm hoping to try more of their menu while still in Asheville.
google avatar

Amy P.

Yelp
Love love love the vibe here! Unique, wild, fun, open Small batch brewed beer of all kinds! Live music and smiling people Can't wait to come in the summer for volleyball and movies!!
google avatar

Tara P.

Yelp
So much space to run around and explore with the kids- wine and beer was delicious and the staff were über friendly and informative. The preselected flight options were really great for newbies and we really enjoyed hanging out in the back area with space to spread out. Parking was super convenient!
google avatar

Nathan B.

Yelp
This place is a complex! Everything about it says intentionality. They have an amazing indoor space. They separate registers for merchandise/beer to go and drinks. Clear lines for accessing the registers. Lighting is cool and there are chairs, tables, couches. There is a stage for bands. The outdoor space is incredible. Picnic tables all over a yard with large, mature trees. There are bathrooms, volleyball nets, and a frisbee golf course that was PACKED. My only complaint is the walk to the outdoor area (and the bathrooms were locked). The BEER: I have to admit, I have had a decent amount of Highland beer. I've never been a big fan. It has always seemed a bit normal. But I was super impressed with their brewery. Their Hazy was solid and they had really cool barrel aged beers. And they even had a great Belgian that my buddy loved. I would definitely return to this brewery.
google avatar

Marie O.

Yelp
Special place. Good porters and today I tried the Octoberfest lager, so smooth with notes of spice. Dog friendly and a great group place for sure. The staff is friendly. There's good music playing in the background and you get the feeling you can just hang for hours. There are food trucks if you're hungry.
google avatar

Sabrina H.

Yelp
Talk about a cozy brewery. I always say that breweries feel so masculine. And this one really knows how to warm up the mode. Go figure it's women owned. I came here for an afternoon beer with a friend after a hike and I loved it all. Cute plants, amazing outdoor space and a stage. I"m excited to come back here for some events and live music!
google avatar

Kathleen K.

Yelp
Jammy beer? Loved the live music!!! Loads of seating options both indoor and outdoor.
google avatar

Lisa D.

Yelp
Such a fun brewery to visit in Asheville. Nice beer selection as well as some ciders and soft drinks for the non-beer drinkers. My favorite was the award winning Gaelic ale but we also enjoyed the summer peachful for a fruity alternative. Sampled a flight, then went back for our favorites. We visited early in the day so it was not very busy and we enjoyed the indoors as well as the outdoors. Food truck option was a nice bonus. Wish we had brought our own discs for the frisbee golf course, but had thought they could be rented. Unfortunately they did not loan or rent them, but you could buy them at the gift shop for $20 each, which was a little steep but we still bought them anyway. The course was fun and the outdoor picnic areas were super nice. Even the restrooms were unique, clean, and plentiful. Nice place to visit, great beers, friendly servers, so all around an awesome experience.

Yelp
Asheville's OG craft brewery...yep, they were the first and you can tell with their new taproom. The ambiance, decor, vibe, and vast indoor & outdoor seating are rustic, industrial, AVL chic & functional. Lots of parking and you feel like you are in a beer resort at this location. They did a fantastic job! Also, the beers are as they ever were: amazing, delicious, stylistically on point, and when they do a BBA or high ABV option, they come in missiles hot and hit it! Definitely recommend a flight to find your favs. You can create your own or choose one of their curated flights! I think that's a great option when you aren't sure what you want to try or you want to try different groups that are stylistically or thematically similar. Staff are great and able to make informed recs if your on the beer-ordering fence. Must stop here if doing an Asheville brewery crawl or Blue Ridge beer vacay!
google avatar

Jennifer D.

Yelp
I was so surprised to see how big this brewery is! So much seating outside which I love, and plenty of seating options inside too. Bartenders were friendly and so many options to choose from! There were two food trucks there also (on a Sunday) with great options. Highly recommend it!
google avatar

Lisa Y.

Yelp
We enjoyed stopping here on our way to Virginia. Huge area to enjoy a delicious beer. The variety is so welcomed. Loved our visit here.
google avatar

Allison M.

Yelp
One of my favorites in Asheville. Great beer and people. They have so many options- even wines! Plenty of spots for pups and a great trivia here on Monday nights. Their updates and concert space is amazing!
google avatar

Tracy A.

Yelp
Chinese New Year celebration, year of the Rabbit was such a fun event at Highland this year. Great food from Gan Shan, live band, dancing, Photo booth, entertainment. And of course great drinks!!
google avatar

Ryan H.

Yelp
This is a great option and in my opinion the best option of a multitude of Asheville breweries. The day after Thanksgiving was unusually busy but I was amazed at how well they got brews served. And with several food trucks the lines were not bad at all. The USA - England World Cup match was the star with at least 2 TVs to watch while great live music played which was not too loud. We spent time at halftime as well which was great for the family. Overall a great experience with some great Cider and IPAs.

Daniel S.

Yelp
Great beer selection on tap. Everything posted on the wall above the bar. We had the Kolsch and a flight of a great selection of beers. Sat outside with another couple that we connected with. But bottom line, great beer, great venue. Took home a selection of beer for the home fridge. We'll be back
google avatar

Lauren D.

Yelp
This brewery is amazing! In addition to the tap room and available tours, this locations also offers rooftop seating and a large outdoor area called the Meadow. My group sat outside in the meadow since it was a beautiful June day. The meadow has a large grassy area with picnic tables (w/ umbrellas) a stage for live music, volleyball courts, frisbee golf, and hiking trails. An outdoor bar is available to purchase anything from the full beer selection. Highland BC brings in food trucks for snacks and food while you're enjoying the outdoor area. They play a selection of 90's music when live music isn't available. The meadow is also dog and kid friendly, so being Fido! I highly recommend this brewery for groups of all sizes!
google avatar

Terri M.

Yelp
Great ambience. Volleyball, beer and dogs. And family friendly. Usually a great local band. If you like frisbee golf, looks like a nice place. Always a go to for us.

Yelp
I was first introduced to Highland Brewing years ago while dining at The Irish Rover in Louisville. At that time The Rover had Highland's Gaelic Ale on tap. One sip I was hooked. Gaelic Ale is a amber Ale with a smooth malty flavor and clean finish. Every subsequent visit I had my Gaelic Ale, until one day the bartender told me they couldn't get it anymore. Also during this time I was buying Gaelic Ale 12 pack cans at Total Wine and More. After being told The Rover could no longer get Gaelic Ale, I made a bee line to Total Wine. I searched up and down the aisles and no Gaelic Ale. A Total Wine employee asked if they could help me. I explained I was looking for Highland's Gaelic Ale. I was told Highland no longer distributed in the state of Kentucky. It was sad to see an old man broke down crying in the craft beer aisle at Total Wine! So now what. My wife and I decide to take a vacation to Asheville. I loaded up with Gaelic Ale. Now I get lucky and one of my grown daughters and her family find a camping area they love in.....Asheville! They also report they loved the Highland Brewery property and taproom. I'm happy to report I received two cases of Gaelic Ale for Christmas. AND my daughter's family is planning another camping trip to Asheville. More Gaelic Ale in my future!

Yelp
The two of us came here during our trip to Asheville a little while back, as we've both been fans of their Thunderstruck Coffee Porter and were excited to try other beers that they had on tap. They have plenty of parking on premises. We still weren't comfortable sitting inside, so we opted to sit outside. They have plenty of tables outside, but it can get chilly in the fall/winter. I was really impressed to find that due to COVID, they have a great sanitizing system and place red/green blocks on every table that you turn to red as soon as you sit down to indicate whether the table is clean or not (red - dirty, green - clean). We also saw employees coming around to sanitize very often. We felt very safe here. As for the drinks, we shared a flight with a bunch of their Small Batch Brews. They were: Pineapple Orchard - hazy pineapple IPA Bon Bon Stout with Earl Grey Tea - contains lactose and cacao nibs Boo! - apple cherry sour brown ale Cafe Au Lait - bourbon barrel aged breakfast stout with coffee, maple syrup, vanilla, lactose, cacao nibs For me, all of them sounded better than they tasted, but I'm not much of a beer drinker. Our least favorite was the Cafe Au Lait, which was really heavy and 12.5% ABV. My favorites were probably the Boo! and Pineapple Orchard. My boyfriend loved all of them, especially the Pineapple Orchard IPA. Definitely give Highland Brewing a try if you're in the area!
google avatar

Spencer H.

Yelp
The original local brewery that started it all in Asheville NC. Oscar has built an amazing legacy here. Brought my Dad & Son here after shopping over the holidays. One of the best breweries in America ti visit. We each had a flight to introduce Dad to new flavors... had a great time at one of Asheville's iconic breweries...
google avatar

Alex E.

Yelp
I'm not on Team Highland. I don't HATE it. It has a super cool outdoor space. But that's kinda it, for me. Why? Because there are children EVERYWHERE. I don't know WHY people feel the need to host children's birthday parties at a brewery, but it seriously drives my bananas. I am not at a park, a playground, or at Chucky Cheese. Parents: Stop. IT. My husband likes their beer, which should probably bump my review up.... (I'm not a beer drinker). And kudos to the customer service- all the employees were very friendly. So. Okay. If I'm invited to Highland by some friends, I won't put up a fuss and not want to go (I'm looking at you, Hi Wire!), but I also won't be putting Highland on my Top 5 Breweries in AVL List, either.
google avatar

Samantha G.

Yelp
Really cool place and we enjoyed our time here. I think we didn't think it was overly special but that is probably because Asheville has so much cool places. There is a nice outdoor space (The Meadows). It is more out of the way though.
google avatar

Stanley M.

Yelp
The premier craft brewing location. I just stopped in. People on the deck enjoying a cold one with 2 food trucks here. I like the highlands lager. My go to beer when here. There's always something to do here. Whether it's sand volleyball or trivia night. It's like a beer destination!!
google avatar

Jackie D.

Yelp
I've been to Highland brewing many times, and I can always find several beers that I love on draft. The huge yard area is great for playing, or for seeing the local band on the stage I personally love their OG Highland Gaelic Ale. Great for dogs and kids as well.
google avatar

Kristen Claire G.

Yelp
First of all. I don't know why anyone didn't tell me how cool this place was sooner. Seriously. We came on a Thursday night to watch the volleyball. We'll we came for beers but the volleyball was entertaining and we ended up sitting there well past an hour after the brewery closing. The outside/garden ish area is MAGICAL at night. The twinkling lights, forestry and tables make this brewery feel pretty darn romantic. Even on a hot and humid summer night. Would love if we could have tried more beers but that's what we get for only giving ourselves an hour. The inside was nice too, there's a little patio area with umbrellas. The staff were all wearing mask and they had hand sanitizer out. Weird mention, but the outside bathrooms are some of the nicest outdoor bathrooms I've ever seen. As a lady that spends most of her free time camping in the woods, nice bathrooms greatly appreciated.

Yelp
Amazing venue. We attended a wedding that had the ceremony on the rooftop and reception on the first floor. Incredible Mountain Views. Staff was awesome and the food was great! If you're in the area or looking for a venue this place is 5/5 awesome. Highly recommend checking it out.

Sally S.

Yelp
Loved the ambiance of this place you could sit in the indoor tap room which was nice and cool or outside in the meadow which we chose for the beautiful trees, it was nice in the shade. There were multiple food trucks and the beer was cold and delicious.
