A New Souplantation Homage Draws Big Lines in Rancho Cucamonga | Eater LA

"After 100 years of operation, the Highland Theatre closed permanently on February 29, with owner Dan Akarakian citing an inability to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic; the building’s landlord, Cyrus Etemad, said he plans to restore the venue and continue using it for theatrical and music purposes." - Mona Holmes

My son and I went to go see Lilo & Stitch and he was very excited! Staff greeted us at the door and the bathroom was clean and spacious. Snacks were for a reasonable price. Very affordable to see new movies.$5 to view a movie per guest.

Google
This is a cool place and was a cool experience. Always $5 for ticket entry and they seem to play the same movie all week or maybe as long as it's successful. I have been here twice and definitely will return. I think next time I will sit a little closer to the screen. They have a full bar and have small food options. They also have a dance floor! The pre-movie music was top notch.

Google
Seeing a movie at the Highland Square Theater is something everyone needs to experience at least once. The theater itself has one screen in one big room, which gives it a communal feeling you don't get in modern multi-plexes. The cost of a ticket is super reasonable, even for first-run movies, and they serve alcohol at the snack bar. Overall, such a fun experience!

Google
This is the type of place you need to support before it closes and we lose it.. That's lost on too many people. It has an incredible ambiance, and it's affordable!!! It's very cool. There's booze, and concessions are reasonable. The staff is always happy to see folks. Check it out. Please!

Emerson A.

Google
Great theater with amazing audio. The staff was also very friendly and patient.

Google
I feel this is a place in Akron everyone should visit at least once. I love the historical building, being there was a fun experience. I like the bar as well, it makes the movie fun. I remember when I was here the projector broke down, but they gave us tickets to come back whenever within the next year.

Stephanie M.

Google
Always a pleasure! My kids and I have a great time, and I don't go broke!

Google
Highland Square Theatre is what going to the big screen was and is all about!! A one screen theater with the concession in the same room and amazingly beautiful art deco details!! Super clean, well run, THE BEST prices in tickets and concessions... I cant say enough about this neighborhood theater that is playing 1st run films!! A MUST GO!!

TL H.

Yelp
Just went to the Highland Theatre for the first time. I had a great time watching LILO and Stitch today with my daughter and my mom. Clean theatre, affordable prices and comfortable seats

Yelp
Akron is a diverse place and this old theatre in Highland Square adds to the city's unique feel. It's an amazing value - $5 for a first run movie. It's cool because it has a marquis that lights up, and it's surprisingly large (600 seats!), and the bar at the back has comfy stools and even an area with tables where you can sit with friends and watch a movie while having adult beverages. It's dark inside and probably not to every moviegoer's taste, and I haven't tried the popcorn, but I love supporting this local neighborhood business, especially when they're showing something other than comic book and action movies.

Yelp
This is a hard one. I want to give it a higher score. But here is my main issue it is dirty. There is popcorn and pop spillage everywhere in the seats. You gotta wipe the cup holders down. Really! Wipe them down once people leave. I can almost deal with the popcorn spillage but pop or drink spillage just gets sticky and gross. That is the issue. It's very dark in there when we walked in. 15 mins before the movie. So not sure why so dark. But with or phone lights on we found a row and had to move off the first seats we selected because of the spillage. It could be seen in the dark with our phone lights. The seats are old type. And honestly kinda smelly too. They need some fabric refresh stuff or a cleaning with soap and a shop vac. Here is the good. It has a full bar. And it's easy to drink and watch the movie. They have tables too. So that's cool. I can handle the old crappy seats. But the dirt and yuck I previously mentioned make it harder. The movie and they are first runs are $5 at all times. Cool! It's a huge theater. Huge! And it's fun watching a movie with lots of people. I did not get concessions or a drink at the bar. So I can't comment. There is free parking across the street. Staff seemed nice. Did not interact too much with them. I really want to give it more stars but the cleanliness thing is important. My shoes were sticking to the floor in our row. I have to think about seeing another movie there.

Yelp
Such a fun place to enjoy a movie. This place is local and offer food and drinks while enjoying your movie : on tables or seats. The seats are not reclining seats and the floor is pretty dirty. But you can't beat the $5 ticket price. Be aware that there is a lot of kids and people coming there that are really loud and not respectful of other people around (using flashlights, recording...) and the staff is not doing anything about it.

Michael P.

Yelp
I would love to see this theatre get a lot more attendees. A nice grand old place to see a movie at exceptional pricing. Not the ultimate in hi fidelity sound but no bad by any means. It appears that the owner is doing a good service to the community from a generous heart.

Yelp
The Highland Theatre is one of the last of its kind. Built in 1938 it is a fine example of classic Art Deco style. Yes, it has been through alot over the years. It has weathered many storms and continues to endure despite the many wounds that time has wrought. It is a survivor. Don't expect a "state of the art" experience. Do go, and with an open mind. It has the second largest screen in the area. This is the way we used to see movies. Together---not stuffed into little cubicles at the ends of nondescript hallways full of ubiquitous advertising and corporate wall coverings. The Highland remains in its own world; that state when the Movie-going experience was truly a cultural Art form.

Jose R.

Yelp
So though. I really want to give this place higher marks but I can. It is not so clean as mentioned in other reviews. The staff is super sweet so that's a plus. My biggest issue is why I love going to the theaters and that is the popcorn. They will bait you with the smell of fresh popcorn, and switch to popcorn from another container. This popcorn that they serve is so stale that it hurts my jaw to eat. I'd gladly pay a higher price at another theater, just to get fresh popcorn.

Mitchell B.

Yelp
I have been going to this theater for years with friends and family and it never disappoints me. We always get into the theater quick and there is a nice bar on the inside. The employees there aren't too stingy so you can usually sneak snacks hidden underneath your clothes in. The only problem I find is there are not a lot of workers there, so the snack line is long and slow.

Avery S.

Yelp
5 Stars for $5 tickets. Any day of the week too, can't beat that. Plus a girl gave me top here so I like it a little more than other movie theaters.
google avatar

Staci R.

Yelp
Full bar, $5 movies, cheap concessions? Yes, please! Extremely uncomfortable seats, fuzzy screen, and bad sound? No, thank you! I live 2 minutes from the Highland, and though it's a great steal to see a new movie (they play one at a time) it's not worth it to be sore after sitting for 2 hours and not being able hear or see parts of the movie. You get what you pay for I guess??? Maybe if I didn't have back problems I would think differently? I've tried to rationalize, especially when Fantastic Beasts was playing (Harry Potter Geek), but in the end I went to Montrose instead.
google avatar

Anna D.

Yelp
You cannot beat watching the most current movies for only $5! Also, their concessions are cheap as well. I'm so glad they don't charge an arm and a leg like many theatres do these days. The staff are absolutely lovely.
google avatar

Brit F.

Yelp
5 dollars!!!! They do only play one movie and the seats are just regular theater seats, but soda and popcorn and cheep as they can be and did I mention it is only 5$. And hey if the movie sucks there is vodka in the back of the theater :)
google avatar

Nick K.

Yelp
I cannot believe I haven't reviewed the Highland Theater yet! This is my favorite place in Akron to see movies, which is a huge contrast to my need for better technology in most other facets of my life. The Highland is an amazing place with a large screen, comfy - yet creaky - seats, good audio, a full bar, and the worst men's room I've ever experienced (that alone nearly took this down another star). We frequently see first run movies - normally of a family nature - here with our nearly 8 year old and enjoy the atmosphere and the reasonable prices. I seriously tell everyone I know to go here, so to anyone that reads this: GO HERE! (you will likely not be disappointed)
google avatar

Erin L.

Yelp
Hands down the best theater in the Akron area. Full bar, never too crowded but still does pretty good business. Surrounded by awesome restaurants. You can't beat the quality of a 5 dollar movie in a gorgeous neighborhood theater. The seats are comfortable and the staff is great. They do have a few cosmetic problems in the ceiling but who actually looks at the ceiling during a movie???
google avatar

Her Lioness S.

Yelp
Rude, rude and rude! I asked for a small plastic cup to dish out the popcorn for my niece and nephew to share so that I didn't continue to spill it all over the floor. I was told by one of the staff that she's not allowed to give out small cups and that she would have to ask her manager. She calls him over and he then slams down the cup in front of me and walks away.....over a cup. Came here while visiting home to enjoy a movie with my niece and nephew....I won't come back.

Rick H.

Yelp
Great place to go to see a movie. It kinda takes you back in time. The ticket prices are vert resonable. The beer and wine selection is decent. You have the ability to sit in a regular movie theater seat or a high top. We had dinner at mustard seed and saw jmanji at Highland. What a concept, dinner and a movie.
google avatar

Julio B.

Yelp
I love this theater. Movies are inexpensive, the service is excellent, and the snacks are very reasonably priced. They serve beer, wine, pop, and tasty popcorn. Only thing is they don't sell red vines, which is not a deal breaker. Audiences are usually quiet, and while this place doesn't have the newest digital (bs) screen their screen does the job just fine.

Alex M.

Yelp
Now I only gave this place 3 stars because of the full bar. As far as snacks the popcorn tastes stale always the nachos were horrible the staff are older and have no manners and are disrespectful but the price is very affordable soooo I guess you get what u pay for

Yelp
The Highland Theater is a classic old school theater and quite possibly the best part about it is its prices. Everything is cheaper here from the ticket itself ($5) to everything at the concession stand. In fact, the best thing about the concession stand is that it is right behind all of the seating inside the theater! You'll never have to miss any of the movie to get a bite to eat, not to mention, they also serve alcohol in addition to the "traditional" movie theater snacks. The screen is huge, almost IMAX sized, and the the surround sound is just as good as any Regal theater you'll go to. There is a ton of seating, probably 1.5-2x more than a normal movie theater. The chairs seem to be original or maybe just haven't been replaced in years, so they're a bit stiff. It's certainly manageable, though. I just sat through 2:47 of the Hobbit last night just fine. The bathrooms are kind of nasty but I can get past that. If by chance you seem to notice it, the ceiling also has some damage to it but doesn't seem to be a big problem. Also, if judging by the renovations they've done recently, that's next to be fixed. In the end, the Highland is a really great place to see a movie, especially a midnight premier. The atmosphere is great and everyone there is super friendly! They always have the best movie showing at the time, meaning you can't beat a good movie at a really great price resulting in a 5/5.

Yelp
I went to see one of the last movies playing about a month ago and I left my wallet in the seat by accident. I was freaking out, so I called immediately after I left and they told me they found it and it would be in the safe. When I picked it up the next day, there was $20 missing and they're explanation for that was "We're all family here, so we wouldn't do it...", and left it at that. I just think it's funny they told me their daughter found it, and now it's missing money. If it was a random person my wallet would not have been found, and my cards swiped as well. Just saying. It's cheap other than that. Horrible customer service with the way they handled that, they couldn't even offer anything to make sure that I left tha theater happy.

Daniel L.

Yelp
Five, five dollar, five dollar movies! The place also looks really nice and the concessions are a lot cheaper too. They also have ice in the urinals.
google avatar

Kristin L.

Yelp
Love this place! Cool old theatre. Full bar! You can sit comfortably at a table & chairs or sit in traditional theatre seats.
google avatar

Lisa C.

Yelp
the seats aren't the best and neither is the sound system or the picture... but it's such a classic landmark that the other stuff can be overlooked! It's very kid friendly and even has tables for the kids to sit at and eat their popcorn! They serve beer and alcohol and have Excellent prices!!!
google avatar

Waheed B.

Yelp
Great ambiance. With a price of $5 per movie daily, it is impossible to beat. The bar in the back is fully stocked with liquor with cheap bar and wine options as well. The acoustics are not graet when it comes to actually listening to the movie. I have seen three movies here, and there have been times where it has been difficult to understand what was said. However, look at it this way, if they upgraded the acoustics, the movie would not be $5 anymore, so deal with it! :-). Finally, it is a local business, not a Mega-theatre. The more we support local businesses, the better it is for the community. Overall, great place to see a movie.

Yelp
Movie theater with a full bar. Tickets are cheap at only 5 bucks. Staff was extremely friendly and it was good to see a small business still operating and doing well.

A M.

Yelp
A $5 ticket price and comparatively cheap concessions (plus the option of a full bar) are the good points of the Highland Theatre but they do not make up for the bad points. Firstly: the sound and picture quality are awful. The screen is fuzzy and the sound system was so bad that you are sometimes not able to hear the dialogue of the film. Compounding this problem is the fact that the concessions are located at the back of the theater itself and not in a separate room. So when the workers decide that they need to replenish their stocks you have the sound of popcorn popping behind you distracting from the movie. Secondly: the seats are not comfortable at all and you will be probably be sore after sitting through a movie in discomfort. Lastly: the employees are not professional nor are they very friendly. The workers at the concessions stand apparently don't feel the need to take their conversation outside the theater while the movie was running and their sweepers began their cleaning through the aisles with their bright flashlights before the ending credits had even begun to roll and while patrons were still seated. When asked if they could wait until the film was finished to walk in front of people and clean a row, one young man who was sweeping gave a rude and sarcastic response. Nobody who was working during my last visit (and this will undoubtedly be my last visit) seemed to care about providing good customer service or even basic courtesy. I'm all for supporting local and independent businesses but if that business sells a sub-par product, I will take my money elsewhere. If you want to support a local movie theater you're better off taking your business to the Nightlight, Kent Plaza, the Lake 8 in Barberton, or Great Oaks in Wadsworth.

Yelp
Love this little old theater great prices love the style of the inside great place to watch a movie come here all the time

Yelp
The first time I went too Teds theatre I was 9 and Jesus Christ Superstar was playing... My mother went to see it 17 times I still go. Its a part of life if you live in the square...

Yelp
We went into the movie theater and we paid but we used a coupon that said nowhere on it that we couldn't use it on opening weekend, so we had to pay an extra $5.00 (doesn't sound like a lot but it's better than nothing). Make sure it's not opening weekend when you use that coupon that's buy one, get one free.
google avatar

Kat H.

Yelp
This is an incredible place! The prices are fantastic, the vibe is old school, the service is what it should be! The fact that I can enjoy an adult beverage gives it the fifth star! (I do miss cup holders from the mega- theatres - but the trade off is worth it.)
google avatar

Reese F.

Yelp
Pretty much the only theater I go to any longer. Awesome old school vibe, one extra large screen so wont always have the movie you want but FANTASTIC when they do. There is a bar in the back that serves beer wine and liqueur. All at really fair prices actually. I had a Great Lakes Dortmunder for $4. Have small bags of candy for $1, and then up, also the same with popcorn. And tickets are always $5 not the insane prices every where else. I highly highly recommend this theater, just beware one big downside... there are no cup holders, at all.

Kate B.

Yelp
The seats are old-school, not the the plushy ones in theaters nowadays. But, the movies are 5 dollars, concessions are CHEAP (large popcorn, candy, two pops= about 10 dollars), its locally-owned, the people are nice, and there's a bar. More than good enough for me.

Fred T.

Yelp
We love this classic theatre. It has an awesome atmosphere, best prices in town and you can relax with a beer or glass of wine. They don't make them like this anymore .

Kristy M.

Yelp
Love the Highland, best prices for new movies. I would rather support local small businesses, than companies that raise prices astronomically. They even sell tickets for new movies early.

Tim D.

Yelp
I have gone a totally of three times. The price of admission is perfect $5.00. The price of concessions is also very reasonable. The seats are uncomfortable, so if you're going to see a long movie you have been warned. I saw someone bring the seat pads like you have when you go to a sporting event (kind of like that idea). The price of concessions is also very reasonable. The Men's room was really gross, maybe they were clean but I was not taking the change.

Hunter J.

Yelp
Only five dollars for a movie theater this great! It is old fashion and has one movie at a time. This may sound bad, but it is because it is old fashion. The atmosphere is amazing. If you plan to see a new movie make sure you check if they have it here. Hope you enjoy it! :)

Eric M.

Yelp
This place is a quintessential classic of a theater. Tickets are $5 for everyone at all times and they actually show first-run movies, unlike a lot of cheaper theaters. The "China White Lounge" is their in-theater bar. You can score a decent martini (decent for a theater) for $4.50 and they can make a lot of other basic drinks. This is in addition to their wine and beer selection (brace yourselves ladies, they've got wine coolers). For the same price as a ticket to the fancy regal cinemas I've got a cocktail and a comfy seat to drink it in. Doesn't get much better than that.

Square S.

Yelp
The Highland a throwback to the old school neighborhood theaters. They show first run movies at a great price ($5) and not only have the typical movie theater food, they also have beer if that's your thing. But make no mistake, the Highland is a family oriented establishment and does neighborhood school promotions, PTA events, and other neighborhood activities from time to time. The sound system has been updated and is good, they have digital projectors, and the layout is kind of neat - they have traditional theater seating as well as booth and table seating at the top, kind of like a restaurant. Aside from that there are no frills like with the mega-theaters, which is fine by me. The other bonus is that it is in the heart of Highland Square, with lots of other walkable stores and restaurants ranging from local favorites like Square Records and Mr. Zubs to chains like Chipotle and Walgreens. Next time you are looking to see a movie, skip the sea of parking lots in the suburbs and come on down to a classic theater in a great neighborhood.
