I've seen a few doctors there now and feel confident in writing a review now.
About a year ago I found out that I was pregnant through Dr. Bednarek at Highlands Family Medicine, and the doc made an unabashed plea to become my doctor through the pregnancy, because he said that he really enjoyed that work. Cool. I liked that and felt I was going to get good care despite the fact that I was going to a family practitioner, rather than an ob/gyn.
This being my first baby, I didn't know what to expect, but found it strange that I had to go to an imaging center for my first ultrasound, and then to an ob/gyn on the Lutheran campus for genetic counseling and subsequent ultrasounds (all followed by appointments with Dr. Bednarek). So what should've been one monthly appointment ended up being one appointment with a specialist with a follow-up with Dr. Bednarek to interpret. It felt like a huge time suck and I was beginning to feel like I could get much better medical care elsewhere so I ended up going to Westside Women's Care on the Lutheran campus. It turned out to be the best decision for me, and for my baby since I ended up needing an emergency c-section that Dr. Bednarek couldn't have performed anyway.
I thought, after having the baby, that I may not have liked Dr. Bednarek as an ob/gyn or as a pediatrician (another story that I won't go into), but there were a lot of other doctors there and it is close to my home and how often do I have to see a primary care physician anyway now that I'm going for my yearly exams at Westside Women's Care and Pediatrics West for medical care for my new baby?
Well, recently, as a matter of fact, since spraining my ankle. I made an appointment with Dr. Frueh, because she was available on short notice. Everything seemed to go well. She determined it was a sprain (not broken) and gave me information for getting an air cast, a list of exercises, and told me that I should probably go for a few physical therapy appointments. I got to the place that she recommended for the air cast (baby and husband in tow) to find out that I needed an appointment. This wasn't the kind of place that you could just show up and pick up an air cast. OK, that's annoying, but fine. I make an appointment for the next day.
I show up the next day (baby and grandpa in tow this time) to find out that I needed a prescription for the air cast in order for the place to bill it to my insurance. I didn't get a prescription. I got a note scribbled on a piece of paper. The lady calls Highlands Family Medicine. Dr. Frueh isn't in and after a lot of back-and-forth and a half hour later, we find out that no other doctor in the practice is willing to write the prescription. Jerks. I was able to work out a deal with the place where they would give me the air cast and I would see what I could do to get the prescription from Dr. Frueh. If I can't get it, I'll just pay for it.
That was the last straw. I won't be back to Highlands Family Medicine and I wouldn't recommend them to anyone else. A trip to the doctor should be stress-free and make you feel better.
