Highlands Supper Club Now Open in Highlands, North Carolina | Eater Carolinas

"Located next to the Trailborn Highlands hotel, the restaurant is nestled in a log cabin built in 1924 by Appalachian carpenter Joe Webb; the atmosphere is cozy with three fireplaces, local memorabilia, and plenty of wood beams. Executive chef Aaron Kulzer created the menu with Trailborn’s director of food and beverage, Andrew Sherman; dishes include a Southern cioppino with Carolina shrimp, pecan trout with oyster mushrooms, fried chicken, and deviled eggs topped with blue crab, while brunch offers eggs Benedict, a wagyu burger with bacon onion jam, and shrimp and grits. “When creating this menu, our team poured our hearts into showcasing the soul of Southern cuisine with the intention of highlighting the vibrant ingredients, world-class purveyors, and the deep-rooted traditions synonymous with the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Appalachian region,” says Kulzer, “A true Southern menu isn’t just a meal; it’s an invitation to step into a world grounded by bold, deep flavors and rich history. From our crispy fried chicken to our velvety shrimp and grits, each dish tells a story of warmth and hospitality. And with the restaurant tucked inside a historic log cabin, the setting itself adds something truly special to the experience. We want our guests to embrace the culinary traditions of the South and for every bite to transport them to a place where comfort meets great food.” The restaurant is open for dinner Wednesdays through Saturdays from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., and for brunch Sundays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m." - Erin Perkins

Nicely created and seated promptly as we were 10 min early for our reservation. Sat at a small table for two in the inside traffic area. We shared a Caesar salad that was very fresh and well prepared with premium croutons. Mi bride ordered the mushroom entree which we loved. The accompanying potato salad and slaw were incredibly salty and inedible. I had the fried chicken. Very nice cheese grits which were very flavorful. The greens were a bit plain but nice. The chicken was well prepared and a very nice breading. The animal was very small and a struggle to get meat off it. We had the peach cobbler that was out of this world. Obviously homemade with two scoops of vanilla. All in all a nice experience.

The setting couldn't have been more inviting. I mean who doesn't want to eat in an historic old log cabin converted to an upscale casual restaurant in the mountains? Not that that's a guarantee the food will be any good, but there are worse places to start. The thing about this experience was that the food did live up to the surroundings. Every once in awhile you have a meal that lingers in the mind. One that you start missing before you've even eaten your last bite. One that you would travel for. There were signs. Anytime you see heirloom grits on a menu, your antennae should go up. It tells you a lot about the mentality of the place, about their willingness to spend time, money, and effort to produce exceptional food. In this case it was Anson Mills grits. Then when you see it's served with seared elk tenderloin, lashed with demi-glace and supported by a few stalks of seared asparagus you may want to sign up for that program on the spot. We did. The collard greens side dish was garnished with smokey Benton's bacon (another antennae raising favorite) and spiked with a bit of tang and heat. Enough to nudge a taste bud or two. Finally, the mac and cheese was passed around. No complaints here. There wasn't a morsel left on anyone's plate. To say I've talked about that meal several times since returning home would be an understatement. I'm guessing the elk was farm-raised because of its perfect tenderness and mild flavor. Everything on that plate, and I mean everything, was cooked perfectly. Hands down this was my favorite meal of the trip. Could not imagine returning to Highlands and not eating here.

My mom came to visit me in South Carolina and we took a day trip to Cashiers and the Highlands. The reviews and menu for this restaurant looked excellent so we decided to try. Immediately, we loved the treehouse type look of the restaurant. It felt comfortable and relaxing and we enjoyed our table by the fireplace and large windows. Teddie was our server and he was personable and made our meal very enjoyable. We started with the biscuits and they were perfect. We could have eaten a dozen. The slight saltiness on the biscuit plus sweetness from the honey butter was a delicious balance. My mom ordered a salad and also asked if she could get the kids pasta. They were fine with this. I ordered the hanger steak with chimichurri. I substituted the carrots for Mac and cheese. I do like my steak more medium to well done though I know this cut tends to be cooked more rare. So I was ok with it being a bit less tender because of the preparation I preferred. The flavor was spot on and both sides were delicious. Although we were fairly full, peach cobbler is my mom’s favorite so we had to split one for dessert. Again, it was terrific. It had the right level of sweetness and the peaches were the right texture and ripeness. It did seem like there were too many people or tables for one server to handle about midway through our meal. We would have liked to have been checked on and had our dessert order taken a bit sooner and without needing to flag down Teddie. He was working really hard and moving nonstop so it definitely wasn’t an oversight on his part. We have since recommended this restaurant to others and wished we were in the area longer because we would have come back for dinner again.

Highlands Supper Club, nestled within the vibrant Trailborn Highlands hotel where we stayed, is the new granddaddy of Highlands’ dining scene (sorry, Old Edwards), setting a high bar for upscale Southern cuisine with a nod to local traditions. The personable service is terrific, making you feel like family from the moment you arrive. We kicked off with a stellar appetizer - deviled eggs topped with blue crab and locally sourced bacon, bursting with flavor. My wife enjoyed her pecan trout, perfectly cooked with a nutty Southern twist. My elk tenderloin was a standout, incredibly moist and flavorful, paired with delicious white cheddar grits that stole the show. Our shared Lowcountry dish, Limpin’ Susan, inspired by Gullah Geechee roots, was surprisingly bland, falling short of expectations for such a storied recipe. Dessert saved the day - a fantastic peach cobbler that was pure Southern comfort. The Evesham Wood Pinot Noir we shared was a delightful, smooth complement to the meal. With its cozy ambiance and deep ties to Highlands’ evolving food culture, the Supper Club shines, though consistency could elevate it further. Highly recommend for a refined, flavorful evening!

Fantastic dinner, and we tried almost everything lol. Trout and elk tenderloin were amazing, the oysters were small but delicious and great deviled eggs with crab! Cocktails also very much enjoyed.

We ate here on the last day of our stay In Highlands because we stayed at Trailborn and thought it would be easiest since we planned on leaving early the next morning. We had a late lunch so only ordered entrees. I had the North Carolina Pecan Trout and my wife had the hanger steak. We thought both were unremarkable and neither was as hot as it should have been when it arrived at the table. The service was not horrible but I can't say it was great. All in all, next time I would skip this one as there were many other good choices in town.

A true log cabin with a very quaint outdoor area for waiting for your table. My food was phenomenal and the service was incredibly attentive. The chef came out and was kind enough to take time to speak. The atmosphere is not pretentious at all, but very relaxed and welcoming. Highly recommend the Elk, it was delicious. Price point is about $50-ish/ person Overall 10/10!

A Memorable Evening at Highlands Supper Club What a wonderful experience! From the moment we arrived, the staff was professional, attentive, and incredibly knowledgeable, setting the tone for a perfect evening. We started our night at the bar, where the selection of specialty cocktails was not only creative but the perfect way to kick off our evening. Once our guests arrived, we were promptly escorted to our table in the cozy fireplace room — a space I now hope to request every time we return. It was private, yet still offered a great view of the lively energy in the restaurant. Truly the best of both worlds! Our dining experience was nothing short of exceptional. We began with the biscuits and whipped butter, which were absolutely mouthwatering — crispy, buttery edges with a soft, melt-in-your-mouth center. They were so good we immediately ordered a second plate for the table! Next, I enjoyed a plate of the most exquisite oysters — fresh, and delicate— leaving me already dreaming about my next visit just to have them again. My salad that followed was crisp, fresh, and beautifully balanced. Every bite of our meal was thoughtfully prepared and flawlessly executed. Highlands is so fortunate to have such a thriving dining scene, and the Highlands Supper Club is an extraordinary addition to the list of world-class restaurants in the area. We cannot wait to return and create more unforgettable memories here. Thank you to the entire team for such a memorable evening — we’ll be back soon!

Yelp
The place is very large inside. It's a log cabin that's been turned into a restaurant. What attracted our attention is that they serve elk. We started off with sharing the Mixed greens salad with candied pecans, goat cheese, cranberries and it claimed to have a blueberry vinaigrette. However the salad was quite dry. By the time the waitress checked on us, we had just about finished it. She then offered more dressing but it was too late. I got the elk tenderloin with cheese grits and asparagus. It was all very good. The grits were more lumpy than I expected but had good flavor. I got the elk cooked medium and it was cooked perfectly. The waitress told us the elk came from Wyoming. The asparagus was exactly how I like it; it was cooked past al dente. We also got a side of mac & cheese. It was a bit soupy but had very good flavor. My guess is white cheddar with some toasted bread crumbs on top. Although the elk was good, the rock star of the evening was my husband's pork chop with carrots, bacon, and thinly sliced apple. It was huge, thick and flavorful with amazing carrots ! Omg, I could have eaten an entire plate of just those carrots ! For dessert we shared a piece of the Chef's own recipe pecan cream cheese pie. It was indeed very good. They accidentally blackened the top of the pecans but otherwise very tasty. The waitress stated all desserts are made in house. It was difficult to select one. They all sounded so good ! Other options were peach cobbler with 2 scoops of ice cream and banana pudding (she said the pudding was more like custard). The main reason I did not give 5 stars was due to the VERY uncomfortable seating. There was a choice of small hard wood chairs or ladder back weaved chairs. I tried both and I hated both. When leaving, I noticed there were a few tables that had a one-side wooden bench seating. Try to get this if you can. I shifted uncomfortably thru the entire dinner, my foot fell asleep, and I was miserable. They definitely need to make some more comfortable seating available. This alone would prevent me returning even though the food was excellent.

Yelp
This brand new restaurant, in the old Log Cabin, is incredible. My husband surprised me with Easter Brunch and everything we ordered was top notch. I highly recommend the Deviled Eggs with smoked roe, and the Biscuits and Ham (with pomento cheese and homemade pickles) for apps. I ordered the Shrimp and Grits, the chef knows what he's doing. My husband ordered the lamb burger, and everyone around us was raving about it. Servers are attentive and well dressed. Everything served in a timely manner. Seating is inside,on a summer porch or outside on a deck. There's also casual seating in the garden area, as well as a fire pit, which would be great for drinks at night. We will be back this summer, and will share with friends.

Yelp
We came here for a celebration & had the best time! It's very intimate & cozy which we loved. You must try the biscuits & deviled eggs! The apple pie dessert we tried was amazing! Gage was our server and he was so attentive. We can't wait to come back!

Yelp
From the warmth of the fireplace as you enter this beautiful log cabin to the perfectly prepared elk tenderloin, this spot is a hidden gem! The bacon washed old fashioned was a surprisingly delicious twist! And the pairings of their collard greens, cheese grits with the elk tenderloin was sublime. My compliments to their chef and to our server, Teddie!!

Yelp
Everything was absolutely wonderful. The food, the service the ambience great location, beautiful scenery outside. I would definitely recommend this restaurant.

Yelp
Service was above average. Food was above average (wagyu and elk main courses) and decent proportions. Alcohol prices were ridiculous. Basically, a shot of med. grade whiskey was $20. We were seated in a decent 'corner' by the fireplace, but certainly wouldn't want a meal that costs over $200 to be in the middle tables.

Yelp
Great looking place inside and out. Went for Sunday Brunch. Table ordered Biscuits, country ham & pimento cheese and the deviled eggs to start. Deviled eggs were good..biscuits were on the dry side. Main courses included eggs Benedict, shrimp & grits, chicken & waffles and steak & eggs. Shrimp & grits was the clear winner. Coffee was good. They didn't have sweet tea... Cardinal sin of any great southern restaurant. Service was good but a little sloppy. Pluses outweigh the negatives. Easily fixable. Will be back for dinner service.

Yelp
We're celebrating a big anniversary, and we chose this interesting place. We both ordered the trout entree, and we both agreed that it was spectacular! However, the service was very disappointing and spoiled our experience. Our server was Autumn, and she did not do a good job. We were ignored most of the time. She finally took our order after a long wait. I had to ask another server to send ours so we could order a dessert. This gal reluctantly took our order, and Autumn finally showed up with the bill, but all-in-all it was not a good experience in spite of the good food for our celebration.

Yelp
PSA- if you don't have plans to go to the supper club for dinner -make a reservation asap! By far the best meal we had the entire week on our trip this past month. Started with the deviled eggs then I had the elk tenderloin and my husband did the ribeye special - both had amazing sides. Ended with a peach cobbler and a pecan cheesecake tart... Excellent wine list, it was our anniversary, so they comped some champagne. Oh, and the coffee - personal size French press. Fantastic! Can't wait to return! PS. Kudos to our server, Shauna! She made the night extra special!

Vic L.

Yelp
The service was slow and there were a couple hiccups throughout the evening. Our entrees came over an hour after we arrived. We received the wrong food and they almost charged us extra for something we didn't order. Not the best way to spend our anniversary, but they fixed their errors with a good attitude so we'll give them that.

Lauren B.

Yelp
Quick service, great atmosphere in old log cabin house, great outdoor area with fire pit & full bar inside - 10/10 delicious food would go back again!

Yelp
We were totally blown away from our dinner at The Highlands Supper Club. The food was amazing and Teddie was the most amazing server!
