"This Jefferson dive is the bomb, a diamond in the rough for fresh, crispy, flavorful chicken with just a hint of spice. Add in Highway Fried’s family sized meals along with hand battered onion rings, tasty red beans and rice and damn good biscuits and dinner’s done." - Beth D'Addono, Eater Staff

Google
Crystal and Leo does a fantastic in bringing the BEST out of fried chicken. Their spices are perfectly blended, but can accommodate higher heat levels.

Google
Very good fried chicken, the spice had a great kick but not hot. The red beans and rice weren’t the best, kinda bland but the mashed potatoes were great.

First.. I ordered my food via phone and the customer service over the phone was horrible! I’m big on customer service. Second.. When I finally made it to my destination and saw the wing plate that I received for $14.40, I was in shock! To serve an 8 pc pigeon wings (that’s how small they were), not chicken wings to someone for almost $15 is DIABOLICAL! The small side of onion rings were larger than the entree (wings). Third.. I asked for my “so-called” chicken wings to be fried well because I like crispy wings not soft wings, but I couldn’t even get that. Literally, got one star because I had to give it in order to leave a review. The only good thing I have to say is that the little food I did receive was hot.

Dine in or take out. Food is cooked fresh to order so it's best to call in ahead. We'll seasoned. Very friendly. Corn fritters are great. Whole wings on meals but not hot wing plate. Biscuits are good, just need some honey butter. They are extremely busy. Will definitely be back.

Google
The chicken is delicious. A little spicy but hey.... it's good. Lots of stuff on the menu. Onion rings & mash potatoes ok. It has changed a little since it 1st opened several years ago. I do really wish they fix the nasty restrooms though. Ladies you have to use the mens restroom and they don't want you flush... Don't say I didn't warn you. Get your food to go!

Google
Ordered on the phone and picked up in person. Food was ready by the time I arrived but was still hot and fresh. The chicken was the best part, properly seasoned throughout season with a well fried batter. Only giving 3 stars because the biscuit was a little more on the hard side and I couldn’t eat the mashed potatoes because they had an awful flavor (like bitter melon).

We stopped in for a meal; we got fried chicken, biscuits & and mashed potatoes & gravy. It smelled really good & I couldn't wait to dig in. When I taste it, the chicken is spicy & it subtly sneaks up on u. It was well seasoned but personal. I don't care for spicy foods, so I didn't like it very much, but bae liked it. I didn't like the biscuits very much; it was soft but not much flavor, in my opinion. No seasoning or salt whatsoever. I haven't tried the mashed potatoes yet, but when I do, I'll post it here. So, in my honest opinion; it was okay 👍🏾

Google
Great food, great price, super nice people! We had the 3 piece fish, salad with chicken, 2 pc fried chicken, onion rings, coleslaw. It was all delicious. The fish was just right. Really good breading and melt in your mouth fish. The fried chicken was good but it was a little spicy for my taste (I don’t like spicy food) but the flavor was good. The chicken on the salad, however, was not spicy at all. They are made from their chicken tenders which are not spicy. Overall, I highly recommend Highway Fried Chicken and Seafood. It’s a welcome addition to the Jefferson area. Will definitely be back! Thanks.

Yelp
I consider myself well versed in the art of eating and judging fried chicken. My Yelp moniker used to be the "enfant terrible" of fried chicken. I try to eat fried chicken at least every other week and try to sample from as many different places as I can find. There are no rules about where I'm willing to eat fried chicken. I do not shrink from gas station fried chicken. In fact, I look forward to it and have visited gas pump diners from here to Shreveport. Calling me a fried chicken aficionado would be an understatement. I first heard about Highway Fried Chicken a couple of years ago and tried it shortly after it opened. I found the chicken delicious but a little too spicy for me. So I didn't go back, but decided today that I would give it another shot. I will say that the chicken is absolutely awesome. In fact, I'm not sure that there's a better fried chicken in New Orleans although of course that's a matter of opinion. It is still, however, a little too spicy for me. Some people are a little more sensitive than others to the heat of cayenne pepper, and I'm one of them. I wish the chicken were a little less spicy, but it is not going to keep me from coming back. This chicken has tremendous flavor, the salt content is perfect, and the skin/batter is very crunchy and delicious. The service is friendly and outstanding. Highway Fried Chicken is definitely a 5 star fried chicken. PS Not sure why Yelp has this categorized as American, Seafood, Chicken Wings. Not really accurate though it does serve seafood.

Yelp
This is a small hole-in-the-wall mom and pop shop right on Jeff. Hwy. They are cheap, fast, and serve fresh tasty food! One thing I LOVED about this shop is that it was extremely clean. The counters were clean, the walls were clean, the floors were clean, the cooking area was clean... everything was clean! The staff were friendly, and you could see them hard at work as they bring giant trays of breaded chicken to fry up right in front of you. The food is very reasonably priced with good portions. Their fried chicken, biscuits and side (red beans and rice) were yummy. I love cheap, tasty eats that leave you full!

Terri C.

Yelp
Chicken was very tasty. Crispy in the outside and tender and very juicy on the inside. People there were very helpful and friendly. Would definitely come again!

Miranda S.

Yelp
My family picked up Highway fried for the first time and the chicken was so so sooo good!!! Super crispy even after the ride home in the closed container and the flavor was so good and spicy. The biscuits were also delicious and not dry at all. I honestly wasn't crazy about the red beans and rice and mashed potatoes. I just felt like they were both slightly bland. My brother and I agree that it's very similar to Popeyes but few notches better and they won't give you the wrong order.

Criselda C.

Yelp
Service is fast! The food is great too! The onion rings were excellent and I really enjoyed the crunchiness, yet somewhat flakiness, of the batter for the fried shrimp. It wasn't doughy and the batter didn't fall off easily. The shrimp was fresh. Oh and the fried okra was nicely done too.

Gary H.

Yelp
They have the best chicken & Fish and Fries It's better than "Cane's" can't go wrong It's always Hot & Fresh

Bradley B.

Yelp
It is true southern fried chicken & Seafood! Nice family run ! THE ! Best shrimp po-boy I have ever had ! Great French bread , corn fritters and onion rings !

Tammy M.

Yelp
Love their chicken tenders. The tenders are always cooked fresh, big & juicy. The pink sauce is so Good.

Robert L.

Yelp
The fried chicken was cooked to perfection. Moist and crispy. The flavor is off the charts with just the slightest hint of spicy.

Nola G.

Yelp
This place is good enough. Customer service is not overly warm. Easy parking. Decent prices, cheaper than Popeyes. Chicken and sides taste fresh and had a little spicy kick to the chicken. The kids meal, though, not so much...tenders were tough, and taste old, even though it was frozen, prior to going into the fryer. I should have returned them, but we were already home and settled. My kid loves tenders..not this time.

Kurt L.

Yelp
Not fixing what's NOT broken. This place is run by a couple that cook chicken all day long. It is awesome . And everyone I asked says the same thing. That it is awesome.

Steven L.

Yelp
Excellent fried chicken for family dinners and parades! Reasonably priced and seasoned to perfection

Peggy T.

Yelp
Delicious,& moist chicken plates .The fried chicken nuggets for the kids wow !! They are very fresh really moist tender nuggets.HOWEVER beyond excellent is their fried FISH sandwiches soo moist & juicy it's wonderful. The Po boy (hoggie) style bread Is excellent Even on the bun you get two big slices of fried fish very moist delicious and the my favor . Can't beat the food and everything is freshly fried to order delicious. !!!!!!!! VERY Very Affordable. I can't imagine any better in the neighborhood. I think restaurant itself looks like an hole in the wall ,I think it's the old Dots Dinner on Jefferson Hwy But please don't judge a book by its cover just go in it's GREAT !!! A very pleased customer P Thibodeaux.

Glenn B.

Yelp
Tried it 3x and we are done. Service is best described as "we are doing you a favor" - order and leave please. Overpriced old seafood and greasy everything. Save your cash and dignity!

Sanra P.

Yelp
Shoestring g fries are a deal breaker! Let's get the Krinkle fries Shoestrings are rubbery, hard and missing the POTATO aspect of the French frie

Justin G.

Yelp
Best spicy chicken in the city even the breast are full of flavor. Popeyes still Anit figured that out yet , but Leo at Hwy 90 got it down

David M.

Yelp
The quintessential hole in the wall restaurant.. Nothing fancy about the place but the food is jam up. Service is good and prompt. Walk up counter and place your order, then find seat, they'll bring it to you.. The bone in fried chicken was hot and juicy with just enough spice. Chicken tenders were actually juicy and quite large. The Buffalo Wings had loads of sauce (need plenty of napkins).. The only suggestion would be a bit more seasoning on the fries..

Yelp
I passed by Highway Fried Chicken on my way to shop in Elmwood a few weeks ago. After a quick look on yelp, decided it was worth a stop on the way home. So glad I did. Hands down, this is my FAVORITE fried chicken in (or just outside) the city. First, what you read about the spice level is right. It's not "hot", but it is very much on the spicy side and packed with flavor. The pieces are big, juicy, EXTRA crispy and just delicious. If you don't do spicy, the chicken tenders are mild and of course there's a whole slew of seafood. On the sides, I love the red beans and rice. Big beans with so much flaavor and meat. I was surprisingly impressed by the corn nuggets and the coleslaw. Mashed potatoes are good, not my favorite. But never mind, it's all about that chicken. You're welcome to everyone I see on the parade route this year, it will be my go to because the prices are also outstanding. Less than the average quick service restaurant by far! Highway is everything a chicken place should be and with amazingly friendly service, a clear and fullfilling menu and budget friendly.

Elmer E.

Yelp
Excellent Fried chicken. Better than Popeye's, Gus and other restaurants. This small (only 6 tables) place puts out some hot, a little spicy, crispy pieces in various servings I get 2 pieces dark meat (a leg and a thigh) and it comes with a fresh, flaky biscuit that is excellent in its own right . They are a 10 on a 1-10 scale. Need to try more sides and not too impressed with the mashed potatoes. The chicken was perfectly done, moist and tender. The 2 piece with side and biscuit, makes for a good meal. One thing that would be improved is butter for the biscuit. A drive up window would help as well.

Alea C.

Yelp
Got the 3 piece dark for 5.45 very tasty fried hard definetly will be back. Super tasty and very well seasoned.

Lacey D.

Yelp
I enjoyed my first meal here, and will definitely be back. My husband and I shared a burger, chicken, and corn nuggets. The burger was decent- nothing bad about it, but nothing outstanding. The chicken, however was fantastic! Hot, crispy, juicy, and a nice level of spice. The corn nuggets were also delicious. The prices are good as well. Next time, I want to try the wings!

Yugi L.

Yelp
Tried this place for the first time today and it was really good. I don't often find seasoned chicken strips. These are fresh and delicious! Seasoned fries are also good. Another place I will definitely try something else on the menu!

Donna S.

Yelp
We went to this business by way of yelp recommendations!! The Fried Chicken was absolutely wonderful!! HOT, Juicy, spiced very nicely. The Onion Rings & French Fries were excellent. My Husband says the Biscuit was "Damn Good!" Thee place was very clean as well as the restrooms The Staff were very helpful & friendly. Will definitely be back!!!

Raquel S.

Yelp
A craving for fried chicken and fried shrimp were satisfied this day. The food was seasoned and fried so perfectly. Nothing tasted oily. The meats were juicy and the biscuits were flaky and buttery. The sides were rice and beans and mashed potatoes. Very delicious and satisfying. They offer various dip options. The place was clean and the staff were nice. Plenty of parking at location.

Danielle A.

Yelp
Good food. Shrimp Po boy was delicious, fries were nice and crispy, and the biscuits are delicious! Everything was cooked fresh when we ordered. Definitely coming back to this place for a quick dinner!

Carl K.

Yelp
One of the best fried chicken I've tried in town (so far). Located close to the hospital (5 minute drive), you will be greeted by these crispy, tender, aromatic chickens. The tenders are the size of my fists and just eating five will make you full. Oh and their biscuits are glazed with a sweet honey(?) sauce. I wish their sauce selections were better - it doesn't seem to be house made which is totally fine but I'm a sucker for house made hot sauces.

Yelp
While this spot has been a diner for decades... and I grew up down the street, I'd never been in. But today was the day! Mom chose this spot for a quick family lunch after hearing good things from the neighbors. The owners/workers were super friendly and patient with our usual family nonsense. You order at the counter and most people carried out but there are some tables to dine in. We had a fried shrimp poboy (niece enjoyed and it was huge with a good number of shrimp), chicken tender plate (3 huge tenders and a different niece said it was delish), 2 shrimp plates (shrimp on mine were super tasty but the onion rings were meh but Dad liked his mashed potatoes), and a shrimp/fish plate (Mom said it was good and I tasted the fish and it was good and she liked her cole slaw). The big hit was the fried okra. We got the large serving and we ate it all. I LOVE fried okra! Fountain drinks or a cooler of bottled drinks were available. Mom also got a mango bubble tea which she said it was a tasty dessert. Great addition to the neighborhood.

Martin R.

Yelp
Oh my God!!! My 81yr old mother said "this is the best take out chicken I've ever had." Noticeably juicy meat with exactly right amount of spiciness, fried to super crunchy perfection. The tenders are huge and down equally well. The seafood is delightfully done as well. Always cooked to order. The popcorn shrimp are my faves. Crunch into a firm but yielding perfectly fried shrimp. Run by a lovely and friendly Chinese couple, with help from the kids after school. They keep the place scrupulously clean which I like to see in a restaurant. On top of how good the food is, the prices are quite reasonable too. It is literally a blessing for Old Jefferson to have this restaurant and family here.

Alex C.

Yelp
I've left New Orleans but on a trip just re-visiting, I had to stop by this place again. I last saw them early 2020 and I was afraid that the time and the pandemic would have diminished their quality. Nope! The chicken is still my number 1 of all time and all places. We got some onion rings this time, it was ok. I think that is my formal statement on their sides, they're ok. Also their bubble tea, is just not good. I think last time I said the bubbles were undercooked, well this time they were overcooked. I wouldn't waste your money on the bubble tea and not waste too much money on the sides. But spend all your money on their chicken!!!

Joyce G.

Yelp
I appreciate the family ownership and kids working. The fried chicken is a hard no as we didn't have the freshest and they wouldn't cook new pieces. Yet, our sides had to be cooked. Go figure.

Victoria F.

Yelp
Dive and the fried catfish and oysters good. I'll go here again!! Just an easy stop b/w work and the hotel.

Patty S.

Yelp
The oyster poboy was delicious! The bread was some of the best French bread I've had in a long time. The oysters were really fresh and had a good flavor. Will be back!

Liza A.

Yelp
This spot has the best fried chicken - hands down! You'll come here for the fried chicken - the sides and biscuits are ok. For super fresh fried chicken, I recommend calling ahead and ordering. They'll make it made to order. It's awesome - that the fried chicken keeps well. We usually order the 8 piece meal - mixed not spicy with red beans and rice and an extra side of mashed potatoes. Usually we have leftovers that keep well - we'll just bake it up in the oven and it still is super delicious. Added bonus - It amazes me how super cheap the fried chicken is. The best deal that you'll get anywhere!

Eric B.

Yelp
Nice little spot for lunch. Food is Quick to the table and Most Importantly, FRESHLY fried.

Rashvinda K.

Yelp
Y'all. This is a hole in the wall fried food place and it is amazing! The fried catfish was perfection! I strongly recommend this place when you're looking for fried food!! The bread with the poboy was perfect, soft and delicious.

Huong H.

Yelp
Chicken so damn good! Like finger licking good! Freshly made as ordered! Poboy bread is the best !Good portion size, very reasonable prices! Clean and organized place and sweetest staff.

Susan H.

Yelp
Ordered an oyster poboy and one piece of fried chicken. The poboy was mediocre, the oysters weren't fried crispy and tasted a bit old. The fries were frozen crinkle cut by ore Ida but seasoned well. The fried chicken was excellent, a large breast seasoned well and tasted fresh. If I go back I'm only going for chicken.

Ande A.

Yelp
Forget Popeye's. No need for them when you can get fresh, hot, crispy, flavorful chicken from Highway. Onion rings are hand battered. Only negative is the fries are over seasoned. We asked for them plain, which they weren't, but they are still better than those nasty seasoned fries from Popeye's! Oh, and you can't beat the price. 8 pieces mixed, fries and onion rings was less than $20!

Theresa M.

Yelp
This was the second time I gave them a try and outcome was the same: bland and tasteless. The breading you could only taste flour.

Chanda Thi S.

Yelp
Family owned and ran establishment with the best fried everything :) wonderful kind friendly bright service all around. The fried chicken fried oysters fried okra fried chicken tenders and I can go on forever are all great. Their red beans are quite flavorful and a great signature perfect spice.

Kathleen L.

Yelp
Yums. Hot with heat and seasoning. Large, meaty pieces. Red beans are a hit. Mashed potatoes were on point. We are down for another round! Will be back soon. Keep on fryin'!

Janet L.

Yelp
Friendly staff and affordable. Hit the spot for fried fish. Definitely try the corn nuggets!

Ck D.

Yelp
I hate to 5 star it now all you hipsters w the stupid hats will be ruining it. Great chicken good slaw and a fair price- oh yea, price. I'm not paying 12$ for 2 pieces of chicken on Metairie road.

Jessica W.

Yelp
Great tasting food! I love the corn fritters it's a nice change from the infamous Louisiana Popeye's, it just has a more 'southern' taste. I've always preferred Southern Classics or Chicken Express to Popeyes, and this is a pretty good runner up (in my own humble opinion).

Phuong N.

Yelp
I wanted to grab something quick before my movie started so I found this place on my way there. Plenty of parking on the side or the back. Walking in you have a feel of back in the day small diner. There were only two customer when I got there. One was seated and eating, the other was picking up their order. I took a quick look and decided on a four piece dark meat chicken combos that come with a small side and large drink. I got the corn fritters and forgo the soda drink and paid extra for a matcha bubble tea. My chicken came out hot, fresh and tender. The only thing missing is seasoning. They do provide some kind of cayenne pepper or something at the table so I sprinkle some on my ketchup to give it a little heat. The corn fritters was really tasty. Into my second chicken, they finally got me my matcha bubble tea because they forgot to make it. I would not recommend the matcha bubble tea. The taste was blend and the tapioca was way undercooked. I would come back and try their smoothie instead since I want to try their seafood menu. The price is very decent.

Peter T.

Yelp
Great portions for great prices. These people really know what they are doing with a fryer, the fried catfish, shrimp and chicken are all delicious.

Rose M.

Yelp
Replaced Dots Diner and boy oh boy are we glad! I have only gotten the chicken because it's so great I can't try anything else. Cooked perfectly, steaming hot and juicy, not too spicy but seasoned well, great crunchy crust. The sides we have tried are: Coleslaw, Corn Fritters and fries. Fries are standard, Corn Fritters are delicious and Coleslaw is close to my homemade so we love it. The service is quick, the people are nice and accommodating, quality of chicken is topnotch and fresh and the prices are so reasonable. Also comes with biscuits which are delicious. If I had to nitpick and find something to criticize it would only be that they don't offer an extra spicy option or larger sizes of the sides, like pints or quarts. They do have shakers of Tony's on the table to add some spice if you want. Here's my favorite part!!! Everyone in our family down to the grandkids, prefers legs, legs, legs. And they let you order ALL LEGS for a dark meat order. Happy happy happy family!! Run don't walk. Forget Brother's and Popeyes. Try Highway instead. If I ever get around to trying anything else I will let you know.

Omar R.

Yelp
Very good and fresh chicken, excellent flavor, nice Atencion. They always have the food ready when you order by phone and pick up,

Jasmine C.

Yelp
I live right around the corner from this place, it was my first time today and I was not disappointed. I got the mixed seafood and garden salad. The Shrimp were huge and everything was so fresh and tasty. I will be coming back. Add croutons to the salad, it'll be perfect.

Henry S.

Yelp
There is nothing special going on over here. I gave two stars because the chicken was fresh and hot but, lacked flavor. I'm okay with not returning here!
