Hands down one of the best dinners I have had! The food was phenomenal from appetizer to the freshest sushi! The service was excellent and the owner is phenomenal! Will definitely be coming back here again!

If you're looking for a hidden gem that combines unassuming charm with exceptional quality, look no further than Hikari Sushi. Tucked away in the heart of Northern Liberty, this cozy restaurant may not boast a flashy exterior, but what it lacks in pretension, it more than makes up for in remarkable food and service. From the moment you walk through the door, you’re greeted by a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The staff, friendly and attentive, make you feel like you're part of the family. But the real star of the show is the chef. With an impressive mastery of sushi, each dish is a work of art, bursting with flavors that showcase not only skill but creativity. Whether it's a perfectly balanced roll, a delicate nigiri, or an inventive seasonal dish, every bite feels like a celebration of freshness and craftsmanship. It’s clear that the chef is not just preparing food, but is deeply passionate about the artistry of sushi. The quality of the fish is nothing short of stellar, and the subtle, yet bold, combinations of flavors show a true understanding of both tradition and innovation. Hikari Sushi may be a humble neighborhood spot, but it offers a level of dining experience that far exceeds expectations. For sushi lovers who appreciate quality, creativity, and warmth, this place is nothing short of a treasure. Don’t miss it—Hikari Sushi is a delightful, unforgettable culinary experience.

Google
BYOB affordable sushi place in NoLibs! This is a quaint restaurant with an indoor and outdoor section. Inside is a bit dated and could use some minor upgrades, but it’s cozy and good for a casual night. The fishtown roll was something special. The flavors went so well together and it was a big portion. The shrimp tempura roll was good for what it is. Shrimp shumai was superb, so soft and pillowy. Crab wontons were not our favorite, the crab filling tasted a bit off to me. Overall, I would definitely come back for more sushi. This is perfect for a laidback night with friends or family.

Google
CJ and the Chefs provided an exceptional sushi experience for our group. We opted for several of their specials and their house-made soy sauce did not disappoint. Would absolutely recommend anyone to stop in and give this place a try.

Google
The food and service were excellent. The rolls especially the crispy tuna was my favorite! The chefs did a great job 👍🏻 A must try in Northern Liberties! Our server Jessica was also amazing! She was super attentive, patient with all of our chaotic requests (and trust me, there were many!), and always served with a smile, making our dinner more enjoyable.

Google
My family and I had the best dining experience here. It’s in a great family-friendly location and the staff were incredibly kind. The sushi was nothing short of phenomenal—each piece was artfully crafted and bursting with freshness. The crunchy rice roll and the Philadelphia hand roll were some of the stand-outs for us, but everything we tried was delicious. The chefs clearly take pride in their work, and it shows in every dish. Can’t wait to come back!

Google
One of the best sushi places in Philly, in my opinion, offers fresh fish and great creative sushi rolls. The service is good, with attentive waiters ensuring a pleasant experience. However, the restaurant is small, and the interior feels a bit older and could use some work. Despite these minor drawbacks, the quality of the sushi and service make it a must-visit spot for sushi lovers.

Google
Great sushi, decent prices, and really large portions! There's not much else you could ask for in a sushi spot. They also have some pretty good outdoor seating and a great staff. The salad can easily serve two, their miso soup is rich and filling, the sushi itself is made with good quality ingredients as well. I also HIGHLY recommend the Chicken Terryaki, it's perfect in every way and very very filling. 10/10!

Yelp
Great service! Sushi excellent! Specials are always good. Miso soup my son and grandsons favorite.

Yelp
Came at 6 PM on a weekday for an early dinner. We were the only people here when we arrived, but the place started to pick up by the time we left. I'm deducting a point for service. While the gentleman was very nice, I had to flag him down in order to get any service. Food: I had the chicken teriyaki dinner, which also came with a miso soup. The chicken teriyaki was delicious. My friend had the sushi combo and said the fish had a fresh taste.

Yelp
It's obligatory that I tell you to order the crab wantons. They are handmade and, I shit you not, the BEST crab wontons I've had in my life. Do you know how many sub-par wontons I had to eat before finding these? Far too many. If I lived in Philly, I'd have them twice a month until I died and then serve them at my funeral. Atmosphere was cozy, warm and inviting. The waitstaff were friendly and made sure we were topped up on tea while waiting for food to arrive. Each part of our meal was delivered in a timely manner and we stuffed ourselves on sashimi, sushi rolls and c r a b w o n t o n s. Seriously, order them. Savor them. You'll thank me later.

Yelp
Good Chirashi! A nice sampling of fish is included with the Chirashi. Each time I've had the Chirashi there are no less than 8-9 different selections on the plate. The Fatty Tuna that is included with the Chirashi is definitely the star and sooo melty. I sometimes request modifications to my order which they do honor. The seasoned rice is sometimes a hard and under seasoned for my taste but that hardly is the big story here. The Sushi and Sashimi deluxe is also quick filling. You really can't go wrong with either. Service is very efficent and personable. For a week night dinner I'm usually in and out quickly which is great. Outdoor seating is available and is lighted but not heated. One negative, Parking is darn near impossible nearby. You need to circle for a bit to find a spot.

Yelp
Best sushi I have had in such a long time. The quality of the fish here was phenomenal. Uni from japan, King Salmon form New Zealand, and the most amazing Tuna selections presented in their tasting. The service was friendly and knowledgeable. Our server recommneded her favorite ... the crispy rice sushi special, which turned out to be a great choise. The sushi rice was crispy and had a whole nother level of flavor to an already delicious spicy tuna roll. Can't wait to return.

Yelp
Food was pretty good! Very fresh sushi. The service was quick and the servers were very nice! It's not the best sushi Philly has to offer, but not bad if you're in the area!

Yelp
This place is delicious! I got several rolls for takeout and they were all tasty and fresh. I've been looking for a new sushi spot that could be my go-to and this just may be it.

Sally O.

Yelp
Food is fresh and it's BYOB which is always great! I've only done outside dinning and can't remember the inside to well, but it was rather no frills from what I recall.

Yelp
I was craving some sushi in NoLibs and this was on the top of the list. I walked in on a Sunday evening with my partner and were seated promptly. Food:5/5 I really enjoyed all the dishes I ordered. The Bluefin Tuna Tester was amazing and very fresh. I was happily surprised by the amount of pieces. I ordered the Sushi & Sashimi combo which was great but, I need a side bowl of sushi rice to satisfy myself. I will get the Chirashi next time. My partner enjoyed their Sushi Combo but, my lactose intolerant limited my availability to have dessert here. Service + Ambiance: 4/5 The service was okay. We seated given menus and needed some time to review but, wanted to start with the bluefin sampler. After that order, our server didn't come back so, we had to stop the male owner to place the rest of the order. Instead of water in a cup, we were given Kirkland water bottles for drinking. Not a great view on a date. But, our food came promptly and we were happy. All in all, I would definitely go back. The owners are clearly knowledgeable of their craft and the service was good. However, the water bottle were alittle tacky and killed the mood.

Yelp
This place offers authentic Japanese food. The staff and chief are very respectful, and they accommodated our food allergies.

Yelp
I came here with a friend for a late night bite & we were not disappointed. It was a nice night, so we opted for outdoor dining. Everything was fresh and flavorful. We had the seaweed salad & rock shrimp tempura as starters. Both tasted very good. Then we had a dragon roll, spicy tina toll and a shrimp tempura roll. I wasn't a huge fan of the cream cheese on top of the roll, but that's just me. It still was delicious. The outdoor seating area has a canopy so you feel a little shielded, which made it kinda cozy. I wish I would have remembered to take more pictures. I would definitely return.

Yelp
Yes, the hype is real and exceeded my expectations! I'm a sushi snob (worked as a sushi waitress for years, have eaten sushi for longer) and I think I've found my go-to sushi spot in Fishtown! I stopped by with my boyfriend for dinner tonight and we were starving. It wasn't too crowded for a Sunday dinner and we were seated right away. The staff are all masked, gloved, and even gave bottled water for all customers. A+ for COVID safety! There were so many delicious rolls we wanted to try but decided to order the Fishtown roll, NoLib roll, spicy scallop roll, dragon roll, yellowtail nigiri and salmon nigiri. My favorite was the Fishtown and spicy scallop, and my boyfriend's favorite were the NoLib and dragon. The fish is very fresh and had a great rice:fish ratio (with a smidge of wasabi under the fish - they know what's up). They did not skimp out on any of the fishes in the rolls and had the perfect amount of rice. Really, there's not much else I can say but WOW! The kind chef came to our table to ask how everything went and service was amazing overall. If you are around the area, definitely check out this place because you will not be disappointed.

Yelp
I loved this menu! Service was phenomenal. The seating was slightly cramped but I was comfortable. Definitely a hidden gem, we'll be back!

Yelp
They have very exotic sushi rolls. Known as the best in Northern Liberties. Would give their specials a shot again.

Yelp
Love this place. Fav place to come for a causal night in the neighborhood. Service is always excellent and attentive. We love the crab rangoons and the rock shrimp for an appetizer. Rolls you can't really go wrong - fish is always great IMO. And for a good decent price. BYOB and recommend to make reservations as sometimes they get busy

Julia S.

Yelp
10/10 experience. My favorite was the lava roll (made with freshwater eel and scallop), but all rolls were so fresh and delicious! My seaweed salad portion was huge and even the wasabi tasted super authentic. I'll definitely be back here!

Yelp
Honestly, I hardly give out fives but this place deserves it. I went here for dinner with my friend who was visiting from California. Both he and I are from pretty big cities with extensive omakase/high quality sushi experiences. Since it was kind of a special occasion, my friend and I splurged and got the blue fin tuna sampler (8 pieces of bluefin tuna for 44 dollars). Although it was a bit expensive compared to the other things on their menu, it was definitely worth it and the tuna was omakase quality. We also got two of their hand rolls, Alaska and spicy scallop which were also yummy. We also got the fishtown roll which had shrimp tempura in it that was also good. One thing I will say is that the rice was a little bit on the drier side which was a little disappointing, but everything else about this place is so great that it still deserves five stars! The place is family owned and the chef/owner even came up to us and asked us how our food was and he proceeded to go to every table and ask how everyone's food was. The service was really great, the food was great, and the prices were reasonable as well. Also this place is BYOB (there's also a fine wine and goods like a five minute walk from the restaurant if you want to pick up booze) which is definitely an added plus!

Yelp
Absolutely AMAZING! From beginning to end Hikari was flawless. The staff, the sushi, and the efficiency. We made an early dinner reservation, picked up some sake and headed for Hikari. When we arrived our table was already set, they brought us out some water, along with Sake cups which was a nice touch. Started with some apps: edamame, sea weed salad and a round of spicy yellowtail hand rolls. All delicious and made fresh. Everything came out very fast and with a beautiful presentation. One memorable aspect of any sushi experience is how beautiful it looks. Our eyes lit up as they placed roll after roll on the table in front of us. Some of my favorites were: Spicy Yellowtail Handroll NoLib specialty roll (must try!!) Dragon Roll Hikari Make sure you finish off with some desert, the Mochi ice cream was the perfect touch of sweet we needed. Little by little we ordered more sushi, and I think we did a total of 16 rolls for the three of us. The staff was impressed with us but we were more impressed with them. Not only were they quick, but they were all so friendly. In my opinion they understand the meaning of customer service and what it takes. There is a difference between a server and a GREAT server. They nailed it! Thank you Hakari and I will be seeing you again soon!

Yelp
Amazing Japanese food - fish was as fresh as could be, creative dishes, beautiful presentation, welcoming staff, top-tier experience. Chef/owner Matthew is extremely nice, knowledgeable of his craft and accommodating; he's willing to curate unique dishes for his guests, treated us like family.
google avatar

Mina G.

Yelp
Came here for dinner. Tried the simi speciality roll, the tuna taster and rock shrimp app. Everything was tasty. The tuna tasted amazing, rice could have been a tad better but it's ok. The rock shrimp was a big portion, slightly on sweet side. The roll was delicious as well. Place is BYOB which great. Would definitely come back.
google avatar

Kara R.

Yelp
A definite tucked away gem! They accommodated a large group of 10 for a Sunday night surprise dinner. You get water bottles upon sitting and it's BYOB. The sushi menu is just big enough to provide variety without being overwhelming and for the quality of sushi, the prices are outstanding. I had the Baltimore Roll and it was hands down one of the better rolls I've had. Great spot for an intimate date night or girl's night out!
google avatar

Megan N.

Yelp
By far one of the best sushi places in Philly. The fish is so fresh and the staff are amazing. They go above and beyond and are so sweet. They always have very interesting and delicious specials. The Hokkaido Uni and Chuu-Toro were to die for. I have a gluten allergy and they are very accommodating. We are very lucky to have a sushi place like this in the area. This is high quality stuff at a reasonable price.
google avatar

Yelp
I've been craving sushi so got takeout from my fave local sushi spot Hikari! We got 2 miso soups, salmon roll, spicy scallop, yellowtail crunch and the riverside roll. WOW! Everything was perfect and delicious. Packaged very well and the sushi rolls were still rolled beautifully. The riverside was my favorite! Can't wait to get takeout here again.

Yelp
Overall, we had a good experience at Hikari. I wouldn't say it's a super-memorable sushi restaurant, but it's certainly a good one, with very friendly service and fresh fish. We went with some friends, so we were able to try quite a few things. Their appetizers were decent. Miso soup was your standard miso soup. The crab wontons were good. The lobster rangoons were pretty, but didn't quite justify the price when you tasted them. If you're feeling a fried wonton/rangoon dish, just go with the crab. They're very different dishes at Hikari, but the you can get your fix for about half of the cost if you go with the crab prep. As for the sushi, it's all quite good. I chose the sushi & sashimi platter, which was a chef's selection dish. It was delicious, but honestly, I usually expect something a little more unique when I get a chef's selection. The sea bass was good, but everything else was pretty standard. Granted, what I got was aligned with the cost, so I can't really complain, but it just didn't have any surprises or cuts that surprised me. It was fresh and tasty, but I honestly envied my friend who ordered the tuna selection, with tuna, chu-toro, and o-toro. It looked wonderful and he was raving about how fresh it was. If I went back, I'd just go with that dish if it was on the menu, or go a la carte from the sushi/sashimi menu. No real complaints, though. I simply wish the chef's selection would've had more of a unique stamp on it. Our table shared numerous rolls. I can only remember the naruto, shrimp tempura, and the "polar bear" roll, but they were all good. I'm not a huge fan of the fancy rolls, but the ones I tried were on par with what you'd expect from a lot of quality sushi bars. If that's your thing, you'll be happy ordering from the specialty roll menu. Ultimately, what really wins me over at Hikari is the service. The staff is very friendly, knowledgeable, and they really seem to care about your meal. A staff like that makes a place really easy to support, and with no real disappointments, we'll definitely go back. I'll just skip the apps and choose my own "chef's selection" from their sushi/sashimi menu.
google avatar

Erica S.

Yelp
They are pretty much family at this point. We love Mr. Sim and Mrs. Sim. They are so hospitable and sweet and their sushi is the freshest around. We used to love dining in and BYO pre-kid, but now we mostly do take out. I miss sitting outside under the lights with the neighboring restaurants. It feels like Europe until you walk over to 2nd street
google avatar

Sara G.

Yelp
Good sushi - fresh, consistent, timely on delivery. Not the most exciting or innovative arrangements or options, however, and service is brusque when dining in. Prices feel a tad high too.

Marc X.

Yelp
Very good quality sushi at a very good price. Staff is very nice and attentive, but not overbearing. I ordered the blue fin tuna taster (definitely recommend) and was pleasantly surprised when an older gentleman (I think an owner or manager) came and switched the regular soy sauce for ponzu. Also ordered the spicy tuna-crispy rice starter. Which was good. Love a place that can nail quality fish as well as the more elaborate, cooked or chef-driven rolls. The restaurant is clean, but you come here for the great sushi and great prices, over the ambiance. Will be back again.
google avatar

Gloria E.

Yelp
Had a fun time coming for dinner! Since it's BYOB, we saved some cash and just grabbed a roll each and split the blueberry sauce rangoons, which was enough to keep my full for the night! My roll wasn't listed to be made with cucumber slices instead of seaweed, so that was interesting, but I didn't mind and it let them put a lot of fish inside without the roll collapsing! The other rolls were huge and piled high with toppings, and everyone was pretty content with our quick dinner! Small place with only one bathroom, so not great for huge groups or anything, but alright for small things and to get your sushi fix!

Rick A.

Yelp
Excellent food and knowledgeable staff. Lovely setting in Liberties Walk. The restaurant is A real gem to the Northern Liberties neighborhood

Bree M.

Yelp
This is our go-to sushi spot. We mostly do take out, and it's always fresh and tasty. Specialty rolls are creative and always delicious!
google avatar

Bri A.

Yelp
outdoor area perfect. incredible sushi and love the fact it's BYOB. just a tad expensive but you do get a lot of food with it. quality of food unmatched will be back
google avatar

Marcel M.

Yelp
Excellent sushi!!! Fresh and well prepared. A tad pricey but for sushi worth the extra cost. Specialty rolls are real good. Definite recommend and I'll be back
google avatar

Steve L.

Yelp
Chirashi was good size and had a lot of variety of fish, there was even a piece of chutoro which you normally don't get. Also got a spicy scallop roll which unfortunately all you can taste is the spicy mayo. The chef came out to ask how our meal was which was a mice touch and the rest of the servers were friendly and attentive as well.
google avatar

Mary M.

Yelp
I really love this place. High quality sushi (I always try the specials). The fish is very fresh and the flavors are creative. We love the appetizer dumplings and the staff is so pleasant. I love a tiny BYOB so I come here often (and do takeout!)
google avatar

Sarita M.

Yelp
My husband and I were just in the mood for sushi and this was one of the few places that was open on a Saturday afternoon around 3pm (others seemed to open at 5). Even though we came for sushi, the bulgogi looked really good, I couldnt resist and had to try it...and I wasn't disappointed. The meat was well seasoned and marinated, very juicy. A decent portion size and price. My husband tried some of the rolls including the Philly roll, crunch spicy tuna and sweet potato (I honestly wasn't adventurous enough to try a sweet potato roll) and he was impressed...also he's a pretty big, muscular guy and he was able to get a good meal out of those. Staff was attentive and prompt about everything, refilling water etc. and one of the chefs came out to ask my opinion on the bulgogi (he put me on that spot, hahaha). Also, it's BYOB...I would definitely come back, and actually have some of the rolls, and bring some sake or something next time.
google avatar

Karlee B.

Yelp
Ordered delivery and it arrived quicker than estimated arrival time. Packaging was great, had a seperate little container for the soy sauce which was a nice touch. The sushi roll (cracker roll) and tuna sashimi tasted fresh. Everything looked great. Will definitely be saving this as a place to re-order from in the future!
google avatar

Korrine C.

Yelp
Have dined here before and had a great meal. Finally did take out. Got the Tuna Avocado Roll and Spicy Yellowtail Roll. They were both very good. The yellowtail with the cucumber was so fresh and delicious, really enjoyed it !!
google avatar

Irene C.

Yelp
Had some of the best sushi I've had in the city here (and I've tried plenty). Staff were so friendly and fun. The Hikari roll was just perfect. Quickly turned to one of my favorites and looking forward to returning!

Esther P.

Yelp
As a sushi lover, I've been to too many spots to count - including those around Philly and NYC that cost well over $300/person for Omakase! Hikari tops that list in everything that truly matters. We were lucky enough to go on a night that wasn't too crazy, and did Omakase. Every single dish was SO good that I forgot to take pictures of some of them - a first for me (: Location: in cute neighborhood of Northern Liberty, right in the middle of all the activity. We got to sit outside, and the weather and the outdoor lighting & tent were perfectly in sync with the young & modern vibe of the whole block. Food: couldn't have been happier! After the meal, my boyfriend and I agreed that the fish tastes better and even more fresh than some of the top-rated Michelin places in NYC. The best thing about this place is that the chef is incredible - we could tell that he was an expert in both the classics (standard rolls & nigiri) and the creative (sashimi served with bleu cheese & mango sauce). Just incredible and so delightfully surprising. Vibe: while it was perfect for our romantic dinner for 2, I felt like this would also be great for a girls night out - I'll definitely bring my friends back here with a few bottles of wine since it's BYOB! TLDR: this spot is an absolute must if you're looking for authentic, high quality and fresh sushi in the Philadelphia area. Have an early dinner with some drinks here, then explore the neighborhood/head to the pier for a perfect night out!
google avatar

Lauren S.

Yelp
One of the best affordable sushi places. Right on the strip of northern liberties, the service is so great and their sushi is very delicious! And byob! I frequent here at least once a week!
google avatar

Jack M.

Yelp
I ordered Edamame to start followed by the Bluefin Tuna tester. The Edamame beans wer perfectly standard. It was appropriately steamed and tender. I ordered a Miso Soup. The soup has a very savory and substantial body for a Miso Soup. This makes in high quality in my book. The Enoki mushrooms were tender and yet had enough bite to them. The miso extraction process they are using is on point. The Bluefin taster came with 2 O-Toro, 2 Chu-Toro, and 3 Akami. All the fish was fresh. The rice was well executed sushi rice: toothy but still soft enough. The rice had great grain individuality (it wasn't too sticky or mushy). The O-Toro was very tender and fairly creamy on the palate. The fat brought a very delicious flavor. The other two cuts were progressively less flavorful/creamy. But such is appropriate for chu Toro and Akami. At $38, I think this was a decent deal for what it is. All the cuts and ingredients of the meal we're well executed.
google avatar

Anabell C.

Yelp
I ordered through Yelp and got the Crunchy Spicy Tuna Roll (6pc), Shrimp Shumai (6pc), Crunchy Spicy Yellowtail Roll (6pc), and Shrimp Tempura Roll (6pc). The food itself looked very little for the price (~$50), but I realized it's all the additional fees. The sushi was very good and fish-focused. Not a lot of rice around the rolls so it made each bite feel packed. There wasn't much crunch in the crunchy rolls. I wish they added the crunchy bits on top of the rolls to give them more "oomph" too. Overall, nothing too special but still good.
google avatar

Evan H.

Yelp
Real solid sushi spot in NoLibs. Went on a Sunday around 4-5ish and was the only one in there, however noticed many people coming in to grab take out. Really enjoyed their speciality rolls and the pork bao buns were great. BYOB! Enjoyed a couple supervillain IPAs from Urban Village down the street during our meal.
google avatar

Flavio Q.

Yelp
Thank you Yelpers for keeping this place so well rated. I decided to drive 15 minutes from my hotel because of the reviews, and it was totally worth it. The salmon ceviche was the best salmon dish I've had in my life. The rolls were also great, with a featured one that had fried leeks on top. Really good! And the chef is such a nice guy, as well as the servers. This is one of the best sushi places I've ever been to. I'll certainly come back next time I travel to Philadelphia.
google avatar

Nate F.

Yelp
I didn't realize my rolls were gonna be wrapped with cucumber. It was the naruto roll I believe. Very cucumbery taste. It's ok though because everything else was really good. BYOB?? No problem. Brought my bottle of H E N N E S S Y and they provided us with Japanese style shot cups. Bill came out to less than $50 between me and the person I was with so that's always a win. Service was extraordinary and greatly appreciated. Most people already know if you're familiar with the area, parking can be a pain. For the Saturday night I came I got lucky and found a spot within a block but something tells me everyone won't always be this lucky.

Hope B.

Yelp
It was truly not what I expected, for you first time sushi eaters don't go here. If your experienced maybe better. I'll never return. Way too expensive and not tasty at all.
google avatar

Bisi O.

Yelp
We got two rolls and calamari. Our argument was who's was better cause it was so good. Prices were great too
