It pains me to say this, but I actually sort of like this place. There is a very Disney-fied sensibility, but if you can get past that, it's not so bad. They seem to be going for a neighborhood feel and almost trick you if you're not paying attention, but then the parking lots behind the shops kill that vibe the second you leave the main streets. What freaks me out is that the Bee Cave City Hall is right there in the galleria, as is the city library, which adds to the illusion that this quaint little district somehow grew up organically, and all the buildings just happened to have the same architects, materials and color schemes. There are fancy apartments just behind the shops too, so in theory, one could live there, work at the galleria, buy groceries across the street, visit the doctor a few blocks away - and go several years without leaving a two mile radius of this shopping center. Spooky.
The shops themselves are standard middle class/leaning toward vaguely fancy-ish (White House/Black Market, Amy's, Milk + Honey spa, etc.) mall fare, but it's nice to have it all presented in a walkable format. We went on a Friday summer afternoon, and it was very busy. Lots of blond women - no kidding, everyone was blond - many with small children. The Domain would be the obvious comparison, but HCG gets on my nerves slightly less, because the offerings are more accessible to those of us who don't have Beverly Hills checkbooks or tastes. As another reviewer pointed out, it's nothing we don't have in town, but still, it's a nice addition to what was forever a very rural area. I hadn't been out there in ages, and I can't get over how much is going on in this area now. Lakeway is just a few miles up 620, and is totally unrecognizeable. There's a lot of construction, so people are obviously moving out this way. Bee Cave seems to attract a lot of young families with stay-at-home moms. The area as a whole is peppered with fancy houses, zillions of new apartments, and more businesses per capita, I'd be willing to bet, than Austin has. I can understand why people in this area would like not having to go all the way into town for this stuff anymore.
It's a good 40 minute drive from our house, but I'd be willing to come out here again if the mood struck.
