These bartenders can really use a training course. The say they pour 1.5oz. When I brought the less than 1oz shot to attention and asked if they had a jigger, she said, what’s your issue? No we don’t have a jigger. It was a slow Sunday and the attitude and lack of training was ridiculous. Maybe spend less time on your phone and learn to use a jigger.. js

Google
Haven't been here in a couple years and it has definitely changed. No more coolers with hundreds of bottles of beer on the wall! Hookahs burning flavored something. Everyone gets patted down by 3 cops on duty before entering! Full bar but few beer selections. Next door is a Mexican restaurant(old Far Out Saloon) that closes after lunch but there was a taco truck behind H&D's.

dWiGhT M.

Google
Sooo Sad. Not the old H&D which had a great mix of people and beer offerings and peanuts with great to-go bottle beer selection. No more, basically beers you can get at any convenience store, lousy seating, and not the dive characters it had before. So sad to see this ruined by the new owners but they did the same to the Unfriendly Spot too so it was expected. Mo'money. Overall, not worth the effort to come here if you are looking for a craft beer location with character. Go to the 7-11 get a six-pack and hang out under the bridge, you'll have a better time.

Tarunjeet S.

Google
Good bartenders, but bar doesn't have good variety of liquor choices.

Bianca B.

Google
My friend and I went to enjoy a night out. Upon our departure she asked the bartender by the exit for a bottle water and cup with ice because she’s anemic. When she got to the exit gate the Anglo guy with a potato shaped body, grabbed the drink out of her hand and launched it. When I went over to see what was going on, the same potato shaped man crushed my drink in my hands because I was “looking at him in his eyes” with my drink. He walked away cause he was afraid to “lose it”. The other security guard who was there and darker skinned with puffy under eye bags was yelling curse words at us and telling us to leave. Super weird behavior for a bar and “security guards”

James C.

Google
They play the worst music. Nothing but honky country music. All of today's country sounds the same. Trash.

Mick E.

Google
Went back to an old watering hole today, it has changed so much! It use to be an old country saloon, where you could sit under trees, drink beer and swap lies with your friends and make new ones. Apparently now it is a gentrified bar for college students and has a bouncer of all things. I will always carry fond memories and it continues to serve cold beer. No more peanuts, what a sad day.

Google
Where do I start?!... We need the old H'nD back! The beers, the bikers, the grill, the live music... This place looks, feels different, bad different. And, out of control... What a shame!

Heavyn K.

Yelp
I enjoyed myself, I like hookah and they have that very chill spot not bothered as much. A lot of people are here though there's food as well. Very chill spot. If you don't like a lot of people around you.

Jayson G.

Yelp
Jamie, Ryan, and Stan were phenomenal individuals, super professional, and made the environment a welcoming and safe location to have a great time. These bouncers and bartenders provided next-level service. Highly recommend this place. The atmosphere was great, and these individuals made sure you enjoyed your time here.

Laura G.

Yelp
The issue with this place is the security and Dj. The security is rude to EVERYONE, whether you are causing issues or not. They really need to be humbled. The DJ spends all his time drinking and smoking and minimal time behind the DJ booth. Transitions are horrible. This place is overhyped. Don't go here.
google avatar

Claudia K.

Yelp
Sunday funday!! Great place to hang out - low key and casual . Can't beat their Mimosa set up! And the mini tacos only make your stay even better!
google avatar

Monica G.

Yelp
This was my first time here. My bff had been here before and said that the mini Street tacos were amazing. So we came tonight to eat and drink and it did not disappoint. The tacos were fresh & delicious! I loved the music & atmosphere. Not too many people, which was nice. I will definitely be back.
google avatar

Robert W.

Yelp
Lousy service and extremely rude staff I'm never coming back to this sad excuse for an establishment. Good riddance
google avatar

Lauren G.

Yelp
Typical local watering hole. Beer was cheap. Service was average. Great music. Good place to chill.
google avatar

Nerual B.

Yelp
We had good service until the Sunday PM server kicked in. She was extremely rude about the table service as we were there prior to any reservation paper. They placed it as we were sitting there, as we expressed our expectation to the manager he replied with "can I buy y'all a shot" as we're discussing with him the server told our table to leave, even one with crutches & still became aggressive for no reason: the bouncer with long hair decided he felt the need to yell & become extremely aggressive towards us, despite the other bouncers behaviors.
google avatar

Diana G.

Yelp
Great spot for a drink or just to hang out with friends. They have inside and outside seating. They also have a food truck in the back. We went on a Saturday night. They had a live band. Drinks are reasonably priced. The bathrooms are clean (that's always a plus). You can take your dog. Parking is available on site I will definitely return
google avatar

Yelp
Been here a few times, including when it was the original Ice House that you picked up the beer out of the fridges. The new owners put a bar, front patio and added some flare. Love the plates on the ceiling and the choices of draft beer. Last time we went, it was after Paintballing for a friend's 13 year old son. So glad to stop in for a cold beer to help the aches and pain of shooting some teenagers! Amanda was the bartender that day and was great. She was friendly and talked with us at the bar. She works weenends and I will be back for her smile. This is a great bar near us and place every San Antonioian should try at least once.

Jason H.

Yelp
Good spot Sundays are packed the atmosphere is a blast bartenders are all 8 stars fun times good prices. Door gets a line so be ready for good times

Thomas K.

Yelp
shout out to the parking lot "security" getting paid 12$ an hour to stand out there and pretend they hard, speaking to people politely goes a long way. also why does the entire place smell like actual shit
google avatar

Christina T.

Yelp
It's NOT a biker bar anymore. If you're under 25, you may have fun. It's a college bar with loud and obnoxious music. Drinks were ok, but I will not be returning.
google avatar

Robert R.

Yelp
I liked the location and enjoyed the environment when it's nice out when I wanted to have a drink and sit outside. Haven't gone here in years though since the last handful of times when I came in the evening with my wife the bouncer at the gate told me that I have to pay a cover charge while my wife does not after checking our IDs.
google avatar

Jonathan C.

Yelp
Went on a Sunday, and it was dripping hot outside. Our group and I were celebrating a friend's Birthday. We sat outside under the canopy because inside was packed. It felt really good inside lol but it was very loud. Surprisingly all we did was socialize and hardly drank but it was still a great time, just goes to show that you dont always need booze to have fun. The gorgeous and awesome Barkeep Jordan was very nice and had great customer service skills, her and her mini-hers were working hard and looking good. Jordan made sure everyone at the bar was being tended to. They also have a BBQ Truck in the parking lot!!
google avatar

Jesus C.

Yelp
Came out for a 40th birthday of a good friend of mine. First time here and it didn't disappoint. Clean establishment. Friendly staff. Cold drinks. Only downside was the small parking lot. If you can get in you'll definitely have a great time.
google avatar

M M.

Yelp
Warm beer. Terrible service. Rowdy patrons. Dirty restrooms. There are plenty of decent watering holes in the area.... pass on this one.
google avatar

Jesus R.

Yelp
I had just got off work and wanted to check out this place but unfortunately I didn't get the chance because as soon as I walked up to the entrance to be patted down by security I was told I couldn't go in because I was intoxicated. I told security I wasn't drunk and I hadn't even drank any beer that day but they flat out denied me. Needless to say I won't ever go back to this place.

Anonymous P.

Yelp
Honestly, Hills and Dales is a cool place but like most bars, their restrooms need a lot of work, their alcohol mats smell, and their bartenders aren't very attentive. Their food truck is amazing and the place is big. It does have good vibes and good music but I know the DJ is red lining most of the night. (Too loud) but some money into your roof to stop water leaks and fix the restrooms please!
google avatar

Tomas R.

Yelp
Easy enough this is the go-to spot in San Antonio for Sunday Funday. The music is solid, the drinks are cheap, and you best believe you'll go way past your drink limit that you set for yourself. There's a food truck in the back and the vibe on Sundays is always great. Parking is a bit of an issue, but that's something that many places have to begin with.

Yelp
I kind of wish I would have checked the reviews before I came to this establishment. I thought maybe it was an off night but from the looks of the reviews here it appears that the issues with aggressive bouncers and bouncers kicking people out for dancing specific ways is a thing. I'd say it wasn't gay friendly however there were quite a few gay people here. It's gay friendly if you're girls dancing with girls (im sure you can figure out why. As always hay females are always more accepted than men and they like when us females are all Over each other regardless as evident by their no cover for females). Our group had two guys dancing together. One was straight and an ally so just danced for fun and nothing outrageous but they both got kicked out. Females dancing the same way together had no issues with that. The other thing was the dress code. Females could wear just about anything. To include a white T. Males on the other hand would get turned away. One male was turned away for wearing a white shirt however I saw females with white shirts. It was also ok for a guy in shorts, sneakers, and a jersey to be in the establishment but not a white shirt on a male. I just could not for the life of me understand the logic. It was my first and likely last time at this establishment. I have lots of people Come visit for work out here. Many especially when trainings and conferences are held in San Antonio and this is definitely a location I will not be recommending. It's unfortunate because the setting is nice but everything else doesn't make sense. I also had an issue with DJ D something. I can't remember his name as it was not worth remembering. His music was good but his transitions were terrible and not seamless. He would play one Spanish song and the crowd would fill up the dance floor and he then cut it off midway and would add a rap song. It didn't blend well and it quickly would clear up the dance floor. Maybe keep a few more of the same type of music then blend it smoothly with another. My Spotify Playlist would be better. I was not impressed. Needless to say there are far better locations out there and I wouldn't waste my time at this place again.
google avatar

Tyra E.

Yelp
Super aggressive bouncers, my group was tipsy of course but nothing obnoxious or unruly and they got kicked out just for walking to the restroom. Place is packed but business is shady so if you don't know better you'd think it was a hit definitely won't be going back
google avatar

Yelp
Sunday Funday! That's when I've mostly visited H&D and it's the go to place! Mostly college students and 20 something year olds, but a chill relaxed atmosphere nonetheless. Live music is on rotation, and the DJ keeps the mood energized with a good mix of 90s to Top 40 music. Continued improvements to the plac e as a whole keep it a fun and lively environment. New signage makes great photo ops! "Giant" beer pong played with trash cans and volleyballs is really fun, especially when you've taken advantage of the drink specials a couple times haha The prices are fairly inexpensive even when not on HH, which adds to the appeal. So Please drink responsibly!

Yelp
A nice spot that used to be "our bar." I say used to because 1. I don't talk to anyone in that circle of friends anymore and 2. I used to work nearby. Hills & Dales is fun and has an eclectic selection of beer. We've noticed the types of people mix. Leftovers from their biker days, yuppies, hipster type millennials (where I fall into), and now the twenty somethings. Overall it's a good place to catch a game, play some darts, some pool, and maybe play tug of war with another table when it comes to the internet jukebox. Staff is relatively friendly, though not outstanding.

Yelp
New ownership again (Feb/Mar 2017) so stop in and checkout the changes. They are cleaning it up and opening it up a bit. The place seems refreshed but still has that rustic vibe to it that we have all come to love about Hills'. Some includes are: They now serve liquor. Down from the 50+ beer taps to 16 - they say they will rotate different varieties in from time to time. Bottle and can beer selection is trimmed down QUITE a bit from what it used to be. The wooden deck is currently GONE - they say they are building a new covered patio area where it used to be but I'm not sure if it is going to be a deck or a slab, etc. The old bar has been replaced with a new one - all the name plaques were removed and relocated to a wall where the old beer coolers used to be. Two BRAND NEW pool tables. In the works: I was told they were going to add on to the building to add a small kitchen so they can serve some food but they will continue to allow you to order from Singh's and have it delivered inside. Bottom line is, it is still a fun place to go and hang out with friends. Times change and Hills has to change along with the them or there will be no more, so give it a chance. Good luck to the new owners!

Yelp
Me and 3 of my girl friends waited in line for about 45 minutes at 11pm while other people were being let in by just walking up to the front. When we got to the front we paid $5 each for cover and was escorted to the back outdoor area where we were told to wait for our bartender to come to us... we waited another 50 minutes and no one showed up. So eventually we got tired of waiting to be served and left to find our car broken into. I know that break-in's is not necessarily something that a business can control but I parked in their parking lot where they apparently have security and it still happened. As businesses have to adjust to the new operating expectations, many companies have changed their procedures of service. But in this case we had zero service. One of the guys that cleans tables told us to wait for our bartender after we had already been waiting there for 20 minutes. That's why we kept waiting as long as we did. As long as they continue to operate this way, it's honestly not worth going.

Yelp
After 27 freaking reviews, what the hell can I say that hasn't been said already? Just get out there and enjoy all their craft beer and mingle with all the nerds, goths, emos, bikers, gays, cowboys, business stiffs, and geeks while sitting in rustic country decor (think picnic tables), all while enjoying everything whatever the H the jukebox is blasting at the moment. Soak this San Antonio institution while having a beer. Or two.
google avatar

Jennifer S.

Yelp
The girl bartenders aren't very welcoming of female customers, and came off very rude. Drinks are poured pretty strong which I suppose is a good thing for most people, but something to keep in mind. I had a few too many to drink and was asked to leave, which is understandable. It just bothered me that the bouncer forced me to wait outside for my Uber, rather than near the gate. I'm a girl and I'm not comfortable alone outside in a parking lot alone (especially when tipsy). Definitely not a girls night spot for me.

Yelp
Bikers, picnic tables, pool tables, and beer from self-service beer refrigeration, coolers, and beer taps makes this place hip! Bikers take up the majority of the parking in the front, so park in the back by using the entrance a few yards farther down the the access road. If you compare Hills and Dales to Flying Saucer, it isn't tech savvy, doesn't have pretty waitresses or hot pretzels. But then again, Flying Saucer is a business model replicated in every major city in Texas and then some. Also you only drink in the corralled seating area outside Flying Saucer. At Hills and Dales, you can use the patio or the parking lot! Yeah buddy! Since the smoking ban ordinance on August 19, 2011, there there's now plenty of smoke-free seating! I think the bikers have been kicked out of their own bar for it. $10 credit card minimum

Yelp
A neighborhood hangout. This is a cool bar with a lot of space. They have TVs all around and live music. The bartenders are good at what they do and are very easy on the eyes. The drinks and prices are par with other bars of this style. There is an indoor and outdoor area. The building seems a little dated but I guess it adds to the charm. The parking situation is a little odd. There is not a lot of parking in the parking lot. You may have to park on the street. I would return to Hills and Dales.

Yelp
I must say this place used to be my favorite bar hangout before corona. However, corona caused me to stop frequenting this place. Tonight was my first day back to this bar since corona and it was really suffering from slow service but it was fine. I must admit the place was full but the bad thing was that an individual physical shoved me out of the bar order area because he wanted to order. I bucked back at him told him I was ordering and if he could just wait until I payed he claimed that that was his bar and next thing u know the bouncers kicked me out. All while he kept claiming and screaming this is my bar. I was respectful and calm while he was aggressive and loud yet I got kicked out. If it was the owner oh well, nice bar I used to love it but I will never be back happy 4th but this vet will find another place.
google avatar

Jon G.

Yelp
Went there tonight after an anniversary dinner with my wife to have a few beers. Right away there's some very aggressive rent-a-cops that were being very confrontational and aggressive and asking if you have weapons or not. I did not go there to get harassed as I'm walking in to entertain two ass clowns. I have had people ask me politely certain questions regarding weapons and and other details but not bulldogging me right as I walk in. This place is a overrated college bar anyway!! Save your money and stay home!! #hills&dales

Kayla O.

Yelp
The bouncers at hills and dales jumped me Sunday night. There were 4 men on top of me while I was face down on the gravel. Holding me down pinning me down with their knees in my back. While I was laying face down on the ground I felt punches to my side. The bouncers/security beat me with a baton, and held a gun in my face. I definitely do not recommend going to this place. They are very aggressive especially with women.
google avatar

W C.

Yelp
W....T....F So I'm not a negative guy but WTF!!! I went to this place this evening and was freaking escorted out. Hill and Dales literally removed me with 5 bouncers for 2 reasons. 1) a football fan was taking pics with me in the background so I Offered to pose with them. Literally shook their hand and said it was all good and fun. 2) the bouncer didn't "like that I looked down at him". Granted I'm 6'5" ish and this dude was 5'8" ish, but nothing happened. I even told the man his height was not my issue. Apparently one of the people who was taking pics of me ran to the bouncer...well it was on after that, without my knowledge. Screw this place. Not going into much else but damn. Enjoy your money from someone else.......stay tuned for potential injustice claims.

Yelp
This latest iteration of Hill's and Dale's is by far the most fun. Ping Pong, Corn Hole, and a full bar, so let the excitement finally begin. No longer should you think gray hair and Harleys, instead think college kids and young professionals. The "center of the universe" has reinvented itself (again) and the results had me return 2 Sundays in a row. The barrier between inside and outside has been removed creating the OPENEST concept. Under the roof there is a little stage in the corner, a long bar on the opposite end, and a vast realm of mingling opportunities between. Bartenders are young, affable, and scantily clad to boot. Out in the gravel there are picnic tables, barrel-sized beer pong, and yes: A FOOD TRUCK! Parking can be a tad tricky if you go at a busy time. There is a dirt lot to accommodate about 30 cars, but I have had to park on the far-end of the park (worth it) which is a good little hike. I can't really put my finger on what makes this a hot spot. These things are offered elsewhere, but what a blast. Oh yeah btw, they serve drinks in Capri Sun-style bags after a certain hour, why? ...WHY NOT?!

Yelp
Good place to go hang out, but if if go to get drinks please believe I'm going to get food..

Yelp
This place is great and the staff is friendly but the DJ is what brings this place down. How can a person who is to bring entertainment to their patrons, say F-u we don't play that shhhh here, when you request a song. You need a better DJ!!

Catherine B.

Yelp
I'm a 45 year resident of Hills & Dales. We've seen Hills & Dales as an icehouse, motorcycle hangout & now an out of control bar. Our family-friendly neighborhood has suffered greatly from this bar. Parking on lawns, beer cans, drunks yelling & now a shooting there makes me wonder why this owner chose our neighborhood! How would you feel if this happened in your neighborhood? I am a very tolerable person, but when violence is present, it scares me for the kids there & the neighborhood serenity. We've lived here long before this bar. When my kids were young, they walked up to Mr. Davenport's icehouse to buy candy & sodas with glass bottles they returned for money. It is a shame that business is more important than family life.

Angela G.

Yelp
I do like this place occasionally but there is a guy who brings his senior Jack Russell dog everyday. Leave him at home if you're not going to take care of him. I witnessed him yelling at his dog tonight. Maybe give him some WATER or take him out to go pee. He looks tired. Sad.

Genevieve L.

Yelp
Hills is trashy and the bouncers are super aggressive. Dancing a certain way will get you grabbed and thrown out. The people in my party were tipsy but not drunk. We check on our food after waiting over 30 min. We were told we had 3 orders ahead of us so we go to the dance floor. One person in my party did two steps and was immediately grabbed and taken outside. I thought it was about the food and there was no struggle so I continued to sip my beer but then put it down to go see what happened. When I go outside the security and bouncers we're shoving my two people from my party into the parking lot and yelling at them. We tried to ask what happened and then asked if we could get our food. Someone turned in our pager when it fell during the shoving.

Yelp
OMG!! You thought you knew Hills and Dales old school, WRONG!!! I heard they have a partnership now with Friendly Spot and it is really obvious because they have made some great changes! First, they added a seating area in the front, much like Friendly Spot, there's patio tables and chairs on gravel. Sometimes they show Spurs games and other sports on a big blow up screen out there.(who does that remind you of?) Also, inside there are the same wooden picnic tables and slight renovations inside. Their draft beer selection is now so much better and the most noticeable difference is the staff! They are so FRIENDLY!! they engage in conversation, let you sample till you decide what you would like. Also they have snacks inside, chips, nuts and such and usually the Singhs food truck right across the street. There was a mexican food truck there also on my last visit. My friend had a quesadilla and said it was good! Please forget any bad memories, and remember the good stuff and raise it to the next level. Cheers to you Hills and Dales!! THE CENTER OF THE UNIVERSE!

Yelp
$600 Tabb and less than 5 hours. So I decided to go for my birthday on a Tuesday night went with family, wife father, mother and 2 other friends we were there for about 4 hours mind you my father is nearly 70 my mother is 60 and we were all drinking beer and yes taking shots. When I approached the African American bar manager to ask to compare our itemized bills to make sure that we were being charged properly he simply answered "well yall were drinking a lot". He did not offer any kind of assistance to show me my bill and the others were correct he basically said to our bills were because we drank a lot. I will never Visit this bar again there is no way that 6 people drank $600 Worth of beer and shots in a 4 hour time period. I understand covid has a effect on all businesses but should not be cheating out customers. I will be contacting TABC!
google avatar

Cassie D.

Yelp
Visited on a Thursday night recently it had been my first time back since COVID. I already felt safer because it's more of an outdoor setting & the tables are plenty spaced out. They also have heaters for the colder nights. The hookah worker they had was beyond nice and helpful. Their bartenders were super friendly going around asking if we needed anything so that we didn't need to go up to the bar. The food truck they have is delicious, I tried their Texas size cheese sticks & they were delicious! DJ had a great mix of music going. Overall the whole night was very enjoyable.

Yelp
The good : the patio where the bikers used to hang out is now a nice seating area with colorful seats and not necessarily a nice view, but it is quite nice. The insides have been cleaned up but not necessarily updates so it still has the rustic cheap biker bar look. Bad is the variety of beers is now very one dimensional with a lot of focus on hops and the prices are nuts. This is not that nice a place for them to charge those prices. 3 trips and not impressed. The first trip was the only time the bartender actually knew the beers and could talk knowledgeably about them. The other times, they were just pint slingers. I would rather sit in my backyard!
google avatar

Javier V.

Yelp
HORRIBLE customer service , staff does not know what is going on in their Own bar. I highly do not recommend. Do not to waste your time here.

Tony M.

Yelp
I usually don't make reviews however, it's needed in this case. Night was going great, had a great time with friends until the end. Making my way to the restroom at the end of the night I was forced out (carried out) due to telling a bouncer I had to use the restroom before I left and not to touch me.
google avatar

Matt S.

Yelp
As a graybeard college student, I loved this bar. It was a classic biker bar that allowed college students to come and hold study meetings. Yet, here's my gripe. It's 5 p.m. on a Monday. There's a small crowd of drinkers here, and I asked the bartender to turn down the sound so that I could talk to a client. I guess at 63 that I'm becoming a grump old man, but isn't there something about turning down the volume?????
google avatar

Joshua A.

Yelp
Still good, but missing it's old charm. We had a good time, but nothing is self service any longer and the wait staff is not attentive. The young lady behind the "new" bar was more concentrated on eating her dinner at the bar, than in serving guests. The new owners spent money where it didn't seem needed and didn't spend money where it was. For example, there was plenty of seating outside, yet the added many new tables, yet they left the bathrooms a disaster. Not a successful makeover and I'm sad to report that if they don't clean up their act, then the center of the universe may no longer exist. Sad!

Yelp
I don't drink much. 4 tiny sips of an adult beverage is about all I can handle. After that...WHERE'S MY EPI?!?! Yeah...cheap date :/ So can I still review this place? I don't see why not. The nice folks here are kind enough to carry sodas, water, & juices for wimps like me who still want to hang out with the cool crowd. I appreciate that. And as suggested by my Yelp buddy, Sunay P., the best time for a misanthrope like me to crawl out of my hole & join the living is Sunday afternoon. It's pretty empty & quiet. No one getting drunk & rowdy. No smokers. Perfect :) Singh's Vietnamese food truck is right across the street & we can bring food in from there. Bonus! Would I come back? Sure.
