The Best Nigerian Restaurants in New York City - New York - The Infatuation

"Hills Place is a loungey restaurant in Marine Park with a full bar and good music. The jollof rice with chicken is a head turner and it tastes just as great as it looks. Jollof is the star dish of Nigeria, so if a restaurant gets it right you can be sure everything else will taste good too. The jollof at Hill’s Place has a rich, savory flavor of blended tomatoes, peppers, and spices like garlic, nutmeg, and bullion. It has the perfect rich red color and comes with a generous side of fried plantains, which is a pleasant surprise since you normally have to order them separately. The egusi soup, okra soup, efo riro, and bitter leaf soup (all of which can be paired with pounded yam) are popular choices here too. The pepper soup with chicken or goat is also done really well - it’s spicy but not overwhelming and comes with plenty of meat." - Jiji Ugboma

If I had written this review after my first order, I would have erroneously given a 5 star review. The swift time of delivery, the taste, the packaging etc were so exceptional. I was blown away in comparison to a competitor BUT then I placed another order another time (as I was impressed with the initial order) and this time, I ordered even more soups and all but it was a FAIL. The whole food delivered to me gave me this "left over food vibe" which I really didn't appreciate. The very first order, the Egusi soup was looking so great and for the first time, I didn't stool after eating Egusi soup prepared by another but the second time, it was all like a clump of residue Egusi and I was so disappointed. The taste wasn't as great as the first. (See photos for comparison) Also the Ogbono was not slimy and the taste? I'm in no way impressed. I really had high hopes about this place initially but the second order gave me a rethink. I still intend to visit in person and probably know if the failed order was just a once in a lifetime event. When I do visit and I'm impressed, I will be updating. Something I must commend is the Great SPEED at food preparation. Keep that up!!!

I'll be fair and give this place 3 stars. I'm half nigerian and food here is good. Taste like it's from home. But every thing else is a joke. Horrible service!! Walked in was greeted but wasn't told where to sit down, so we sat ourselves down. Never was given a menu had to look around for the menus and never was offered even a beverage...like wth. Took them almost 17 minutes before she took our order. Had to ask a local there about the service bc she was the only one there. Apparently on weekdays they are slow and short staff, and weekends are packed, most people just call and order by phone and pick up. But cmon. Pick to be a dine in and order or just close shop and be an order only place. They gave my friends local tap water which was nasty. Had to go outside and get bottled water. Just a horrible experience. Second time coming to NY since 2013 and this is what I get. Whew. And don't get me started on that $105 bill. I hope they do better. Stright up embarrassing...

Tried this place one night and had to come back again the very next night because the food was so good. The ogousi as well as the spinach with fish is to die for. Will be stopping here to satisfy my itch for west African food whenever I’m in the city. My friend had the drinks and was not a fan and the goat meat was a little tough but I would give a million stars for the fish, ogousi, spinach, pounded yam, and okra. The customer service was also very good.

First time eating African food...and thank God I came here!! The waitress was so friendly and knowledgeable of the dishes. She did a great job recommending me what to eat for the first time. I had spinach and goat soup with fufu. She was interested in me enjoying my meal that she recommended me eating using my hands. She brought me a bowl with water to wash them, instructed me HOW and what to eat and in the order. The drinks I had were really good too. I am beyond happy with my first African meal. Next time I will try jolof rice.

It's a wonderful place to spend an evening. The bartenders were very attentive a kind. Make sure to try the rum punch when you stop in for a drink!

I would give 0 stars if I could. Waited over an hour for soup and this is how it came. They basically gave me fish with a dash of water.
