Uncle Tetsu Japanese Cheesecake Opens in San Mateo’s Hillsdale Shopping Center | Eater SF

"With its recently renovated dining terrace, Hillsdale Shopping Center in San Mateo is adding a whopping ten new restaurants — including two likely to excite Japanese food fans — and it has the finest collection of department stores and specialty shops in the Bay Area: Nordstrom, Macy’s and Sears, plus 120 more." - Janelle Bitker

The Meet & Greet Bluey & Bingo event was awesome. Only negative was no shade when you got closer to the front of the line. No vendors or staff offering free water to those waiting in the heat. Otherwise, a great event. Also the meet & greet with Jack Skellington was awesome!!! Sally appearing too was an unexpected and happy surprise. Looking forward to the next meet & greet. My daughter loves these!

Title: Absolutely disgusting — do not come here I can’t believe how dirty and poorly maintained this mall is. The visitor seating area next to Foot Locker smells like throw-up, and the carpets and seats are stained and grimy, like they haven’t been cleaned in months. All of the trash bins outside are constantly overflowing, and you can find trash and debris scattered everywhere, which makes walking around gross and unpleasant. During Christmas, the Santa chair for photos is black, sticky, and completely gucky, making what should be a fun experience with kids feel disgusting. The overall smell, dirt, and lack of maintenance make this mall feel unsafe and unhygienic — honestly, I would never come back and would warn anyone I know to avoid it.

Great atmosphere. The mall offers the big department stores of Macy’s and Nordstroms, but the renovations are most apparent outside and in and around the food court. Fabulous indoor and outdoor seating!

I haven't been to a mall since I was a child and this is a grand representation of one of the better malls that I've been to. If you're a mall person that likes spending the day shopping and eating and shopping all in one huge building with a great atmosphere and open glass view elevators and this is the place for you. Don't forget they have the Lego store there

Google
A convenient shopping canter anchored by major retail stores such as Nordstrom and Macy’s. Plenty of parking in an adjacent parking garage

The newer, outdoor part of the mall is lively and beautifully constructed with ample seating and the requisite fountain and sculptures. Plenty of fun food options with indoor and outdoor seating. The indoor part of the mall is more basic and forgettable with the same old stores you see at every mall across America. The food court, which is the anchor that connects the new mall and the old mall, is expansive and inviting with colorful varied seating and decent upscale fast food choices. Very clean and chill on a Saturday July afternoon.

Hillsdale Shopping Mall has been a delightful experience every time I visit. From its diverse selection of stores to its impeccable cleanliness, it's evident that this mall prioritizes customer satisfaction. Whether I'm looking to shop, dine, or simply stroll, Hillsdale consistently delivers. Kudos to the management and staff for maintaining such a top-tier shopping environment. A must-visit in San Mateo!

Google
The shopping mall is a nice place to hang out with friends and family. Most of the time it’s not crowded. There are always some shops not in business every time I visit so it gives me a not-full feeling, as I’m used to the fact that all shops are opened every single day when I was in Asia (so active even on public holidays, and those are the time they get the most customers, always crowded) and Canada (except on public holidays, the Canadians close the entire mall). There are a lot of fun shops and restaurants to enjoy in the dining terrace.

Yelp
This is a really nice mall with a lot of variety. There's a good mix of clothing stores, casual spots, and plenty of food options to try. I like that they have entertainment all in one area, bowling, a movie theater, and an escape room all super close to each other, which makes it a fun place to spend a few hours. There are also some really nice restaurants here, perfect for date nights or dinner with friends after shopping or catching a movie. The only downside is the parking, it's always packed and can be a bit of a hassle, especially on weekends.

Yelp
Listen, I thought I knew what comfort was until I sat in the seats at Cinépolis Hillsdale. A shout out to everybody at the 3:30 showing of bad guys2 today! Thank you! (I like the movies again now!) Suddenly my couch at home feels like something I dragged out of a yard sale in 1997. The service here? Let's just say my HOA could take some notes--because these folks actually care if you're happy. The kitchen? Out here serving food so good I started questioning why I even own a microwave ..and I will never make my own popcorn again, they are better (maybe they deliver popcorn!?) . The theater was so clean I swear you could eat off the floor (though don't worry, I stuck to the table on my luxury recliner, my kid didn't). My kids, my elderly best friend, and I, all left feeling like we'd been living wrong this whole time. If you want to feel fancy without needing a second mortgage, this is the place. Tuesday is the deal day. bOGO. (I almost don't even want to post this and tell everyone the secret)

Yelp
I love this shopping center. It reminds me of Stonestown where it's neighbors who come here to shop. They have a Nordstrom and Macys and a number of great shopping for business workers. I love the food court - tons of variety and the selection of restuarants on the other side of the main complex. In this mall there is a large diversity of prices for you to chose. This mall is very clean especially on the weekend in the food court. Come and visit this location.

Yelp
Stopped by on Monday, 09/01/25 for the first time. My mom and I were visiting my sister who took us here (mini pit stop for lunch). This is a relatively mid-size mall. Nothing too fancy.

Yelp
Nice mall with a beautiful garden . Food courts have many options and the seatings are nicely designed. It has the major department stores like Macys , Norstrom, and some speciality stores like unique, Pink Pink tea , Fanloli Japanese store , etc . Love to come it to relax and enjoy the day.

Yelp
Quality/Quantity - Wow, it has been too long since I have been here! And you look great! The remodel looks great. 133+ businesses. 30 of which are dining, restaurants, etc. 4 of which is entertainment. 19 services. The rest is shopping. Atmosphere - Again, the interior of the mall looks good! Upscale. Clean. Modern. Open 7 days a week from 9am or 10am to 9pm. Plenty of mall parking, I park in the always empty Macys lot and walk. Service - Good. But it also depends on where you shop, eat, or drink. Events - See website. Price - Consistent with the brands, affordable. Owner Comment - Congrats on your success since 1954. Not sure when you remodeled, but you did a great job!

Yelp
This is my first time visiting this shopping area since I was passing by for a work event. It's a medium sized shop joint that appeared to be recently upgraded? There's a nice fusion of indoors and outdoors places with some very relaxing views. The stores are different but the same as anywhere else. It would be nice if there were most things to do here but it's still a good different experience

Yelp
They are not user friendly and probably not in compliance with ADA. I needed to use a restroom. I I was there at 10AM for the Apple Store. They do not have a restroom. The CustomerServicewas locked. I went back 20 minutes later. Still locked! I called Security. ...not helpful! They wouldn't come. Said I could use the escalator or walk to the other side even after I explained I was disabled and used a walker! I went to the escalator. It moves too fast. Barely made it to the top. Coming down I knew the escalator would be a problem. So attempted to CARRY my walker down the stairs! Thank goodness for the gentleman who came to my rescue. This is a lawsuit waiting to happen!!'

Kenneth S.

Yelp
Not good. I mean, they *were* But apparently they have shuttered the San Mateo location. No word. No warning. What a pisser. That's a shame, too. They had GREAT sandwiches & service PLUS an amazing ever-changing list of draught beers. Yes, they're still in San Carlos. I think. A little too far to go for lunch. They're off the list.

Yelp
I don't know how I feel about this mall. It has what you need but it's disjointed. Old and new. Parking is a pin in the butt!

Yelp
Great shopping mall! Lots of cool clothing stores and restaurants and a great courtyard. Love that it's so new and feels well maintained ! So much parking and easy to get to from the 101! I love the Apple Store, Macys, Victoria Secret, pinstripes, Paul Martin, Nordstrom!! Just love the vibes here !! Will be back !!

Yelp
I have been living in the Bay Area throughout my life and never heard of this mall before. I clearly don't understand why nobody talks about or go to this mall, but this is one of the best malls to go to in my opinion. The mall has a very nice dining terrace where there are plenty of good food places to go to. As usual, they have Cheesecake Factory, Uncle Tetsu, and Panda Express. The design of that area pars with the one from Westfield Valley Fair Mall since to its modern design. Next to it is the exterior side of the mall. This is better than the one from Westfield Mall at Valley Fair because it has a bigger space for people to hangout and a place for children to play on the grass. There are good shops to go to such as Hot Topic, Macy's, Apple Store, Zumiez, and GameStop. I am surprised that some shops sell anime products, which is something that doesn't come across as usual. I highly recommend this mall to anyone who lives in San Mateo or closer to that city. There is plenty to do here!

Yelp
I've been coming here on and off for 50 years. It's always been well-maintained and has a nice mix of stores. The food court has a lot of options and plenty of seating spaces. I think my favorite part of the mall are the Bufano statues which have been here since day one.
google avatar

Maximiliano G.

Yelp
I came here on a weekend and had an enjoyable time. They have the typical stores (Macy's, Nordstrom, LEGO, GameStop, etc.) and it wasn't too crowded. Personally it felt like a more well maintained and larger version of the Westgate Mall in San Jose (it had a similar feel for me). There definitely are plenty of stores to keep you in the mall for hours. Parking is plentiful and there's a good selection of food choices. Though there was nothing unique (for me) that would lead me to come explore this mall again unless I happened to be in the area (simply because there are locations of the same stores that are less of a drive). Though it's definitely a great place and very convenient to come to if you live in the area!

Carol V.

Yelp
No real complaints with the mall itself. The elevator from the parking lot on the south end is so disgusting and had been this way for a very long time. Hard to imagine it is ever cleaned. Apparently, maintenance does not include elevator. We avoid and use other entrances to the mall.
google avatar

Rugved V.

Yelp
We have been coming here for year, this is one of the last remaining good, clean quality mall in the area. Shops and services are very clean, bathrooms are nice and foodcourt has very good options. They also have nice children play area next to apple store!
google avatar

Jason K.

Yelp
I love coming here. Super clean. Cute shops. Nice outdoors. Kid friendly. Lots of bathrooms. Genuinely a nice area too if you just want to walk around and not shop. Tons of parking and areas to explore.
google avatar

Michelle C.

Yelp
Modern shopping center, with Lululemon. , Aerie, an upscale movie theatre and a food court. Free garage parking.
google avatar

Tiffany A.

Yelp
This is a beautiful mall. Every store I shop at is here, which makes it an easy shopping day. For the most part, the mall itself is clean an visually nice! 5 stars all the way. I took away a star bc the bathrooms were dirty. This is too nice of a mall to have dirty bathrooms.
google avatar

Olive R.

Yelp
Clean and well-maintained mall. The bathrooms were clean as well. Came here to pick up some shoes and the maps, which were located throughout the halls, were descriptive and helpful. It is somewhat of a walk from the parking lot though. The parking lot is quite big and the mall has plenty of stores to choose from. Great place. Very much recommend it.
google avatar

Steve N.

Yelp
Dog friendly mall that we use to walk our pooches when the weather isn't good. Anchor stores are Macys and Nordstrom. Quite a few name brand stores mixed in with some smaller stores with local products, so a decent mix. Quite a few restaurants in,using Yayoi (Japanese), Cheesecake Factory (gluttons), Palette Tea Garden (Chinese, including dim sum), Pinstripes and Flores, as well as a pretty large food court which is always busy. North block has an Apple Store and Carbon Health, as well as a couple of clothing stores.
google avatar

Nancy D.

Yelp
This mall is quaint and has all the stores you really need. Especially the Nordstrom! This mall is on the smaller side but the food court has a wide variety!

Alex W.

Yelp
Definitely my favorite mall here in the Bay Area. It has all the shops that I like and some really great restaurants like Paul Martin. I haven't tried Pinstripes or the movie theater yet, but they are next on my list.
google avatar

Nancy C.

Yelp
Quick take: Everything but shop I just realized I frequent the Hillsdale Shopping Mall on a regular. However, I've never really come here to shop. Strictly to meet friends for drinks or eat at the restaurants. 2021 was my first holiday season in the SM area. Loved the giant Christmas tree and Santa's sleigh right outside of Pinstripes. As far as the shopping goes I haven't experienced it yet.

Yelp
We had lunch with our dog in the Refuge restaurant and decided to take a look around this attractive mall, which takes up both sides of 31st Ave. There is a lovely courtyard area surrounded by restaurants and a few shops. We did not go into the inside of the mall. Based upon what I see from other reviews, the mall apparently allows dogs inside too. If I can known, I'd have taken Zoey inside-she loves to shop! Oh well, maybe another time.
google avatar

Alix J.

Yelp
It was my first time here. I heard about the shopping center from friends I know from high school and work over the years. The center is interesting that it's an indoor mall as well as an outdoor mall. The outside reminds me of Santana Row and the inside is like valley fair in San Jose, CA. I enjoyed walking around, eating at California pizza kitchen. I went shopping at lulu lemon and Nordstrom. I enjoyed sitting outside on the patio and people watching in the open green space.
google avatar

Makayla M.

Yelp
Lots of shops, pretty open area with plants and decor. Multiple food options. Escalators and elevators available.

Yelp
It's been over a decade since I last visited this shopping center. Boy has it undergone a transformation! The Cost Plus World Market has disappeared and so has the dumpy old food court. They did a nice job with the renovations. Happy to see Barnes & Noble is still open at the southern end; there's also a Trader Joe's over there, too. There's a Cinepolis movie theater at the north end. Not being well acquainted with the parking structure layout (east side of Macy's), I somehow made a turn and was herded up to the 2nd level where there was plenty of available parking spots (yay). But seeing lots of broken glass near where I parked did not give me warm fuzzies. The new Dining Terrace looks fabulous. There's plenty of seating. The high ceilings make the dining area bright and inviting. And most important to those of us who shop with kids in tow, it is nice to see kid-friendly options for both food and snack. Uncle Tetsu (Japanese Cheesecakes) is tucked away in the back corner; they also have a store at Valley Fair. There are some food/snack shops sprinkled about the rest of the mall. And you'll also find The Cheesecake Factory at the opposite end from the Dining Terrace, if you are looking for another sit down dining experience. Starbucks and Philz are your options for a quick caffeine fix. The outdoor area on the north side of 31st Avenue (outside Palette Tea Garden and Shake Shack) has a welcoming vibe for sitting outside, enjoying the sun & fresh air. Pleasant on the eyes with its greenery and fountains. Very nice to see a sit down dim sum restaurant here. As for the rest of the mall, it feels like many stores are smaller here than at other locations. Has the store footprints always been that way here? I can't recall. The Lego store feels smaller. Hot Topic feels smaller. Bath & Body Works feels smaller. I love how they've kept the stairs in this mall, unlike most other malls. Yes, there are escalators and elevators. But I also like walking up and down regular stationary stairs. Plus, this also helps me work on my Fitbit steps. The only negative experience I had with my most recent visit to Hillsdale was at Leggings Park, a little store on the first level that sells leggings (duh), pants and shorts. I received such an unwelcome vibe from the lady at this shop, who stood/hovered right next to me, preventing me from walking and looking around the store. This lady is discouraging potential customers from purchasing their merchandise. Not sure what that was about. Was she profiling? OK, I didn't walk in flaunting "A List" Veblen goods - not that I think Hillsdale is that kind of place - yet I also didn't look like a hobo. There are plenty of other places - with better customer service - to shop for activewear. Kids often suddenly need to use the bathroom. No need to worry, you won't need to venture too far. There are clearly marked restrooms in the mall (on upper & lower levels), plus restrooms at the big anchor stores (Macy's, Nordstrom). Overall, I think the mall has improved some. However, it's not a "make a special trip" to go there kind of place. I may stop by if I'm passing through the area.

Yelp
I like this shopping center, especially the new part of it that they built a few years ago. It has a nice outdoor area, nice food court and nice restaurants that are outside. In addition they have a beautiful movie theater and a bowling alley. The style is modern and comfortable, highly recommend to visit.
google avatar

Chyna C.

Yelp
Malls are not the same anymore. They have the same, stale stores like all the other malls or most of the shops are gone. I came here years ago and it was a bit dated and depressing so I never made my way back until recently. I do like what they have done to this mall though. It's very nice on the outside and their food court is nice too. This mall is surprisingly clean compared to other malls. They have a nice outdoor area to eat at along with a nice fountain. I guess you can call this place "Instagram-able" if you're into that sort of thing.
google avatar

Mary L.

Yelp
Very nice shopping mall! I havent been to this mall in quite sometime but it looks like they renovated it and it turned out really beautiful. It wasnt too packed when we went, considering its the holiday rush I was surprised it wasnt busier. Also we were able to get good parking which is rare at a mall these days as well. The stores we went into were busy but no so busy there were lines out the door! Really enjoyed our time here!

Laura R.

Yelp
I forgot one of my a shopping bags in the food court area, when I got home I realized I was missing it called the shopping center to see if they could help me. the person that answered had attitude right away and told me I had to wait till someone random found it and brought to them as if they couldn't go check if the bag was still there. This was also in the morning the mall was very empty. Please make sure you have all your bags before you leave because they will not help you.

Andy L.

Yelp
Nice mall to walk through. Different shops and clean. Parking little tough in the afternoon. Getting use to the maze in there parking lot.
google avatar

Scott H.

Yelp
This is a pretty well laid out mall with plenty of choices. Of course I came here from the Stanford shopping center which absolutely sucks as a mall. I'll come back to hillsdale.
google avatar

Adrienne O.

Yelp
We came to the mall on a Wednesday. Mall hours are listed 10am-9pm Monday-Saturday and Sunday 11am- 7pm. We arrived at 7:30 exactly on Wednesday and pretty much every store was already closed. We luckily was able to eat at Shake Shack but then when we walked around the only store open was Nordstroms. I'm a little disappointed as we drove pretty far to get to this mall.
google avatar

Emily L.

Yelp
I love this area! It has a good variety of stores and restaurants / food options. We like the ambiance and decor all around. I am always able to find items in my size here and the parking also isn't the worst. Definitely recommend to visit at least once.

Raymond L.

Yelp
Unsafe dangerous mall. No security. They let kids ride bikes throughout the mall. Came inches of being ran over. Re-injured my back trying to avoid the collision.
google avatar

Alex C.

Yelp
Although I am quite surprised that I have not written a review for Hillsdale Mall, considering how long I've lived in San Mateo, I will say that over the years, this mall has transformed quite a lot. What started as a small, quiet mall in San Mateo during my high school days has now transformed into quite a large, beautiful, modern mall that has a large mix of retail shopping, dining, and entertainment options. While the main mall area has remained relatively the same, in the last decade or so, they have expanded the southern plaza of the mall to include dining and shopping options such as Cheesecake Factory, and H&M. They also took over the shopping complex across the street to add in retailers such as DSW, Old Navy, and Trader Joe's. In more recent years, the food court area has now been moved from downstairs, to a newly build 2nd floor. The new space is much more modern, clean, and well lit, and includes a lot more enticing dining options such as Blue Whale Poke, Sharetea, and Tacos El Grullense, to name a few. In addition, the new food court has heated outdoor seating on the patio, with very nice seating options, and a great view. The outdoor entrance is also conveniently connected to the newly built North Plaza, which took the place of the former anchor store, Sears, which was completely torn down to make way for this new construction. The new space now is amazing, with a center grass area where families come to hang out and kids run around and play, and is surrounded by a new dining/bowling option, Pinstripes, a new movie theatre, Cinépolis, as well as many other retailers and fine dining establishments. Truly a great place to bring the family, or just come to enjoy a date night with your SO. Highly recommend checking out the new Hillsdale Mall if you have not come here recently!
google avatar

Michelle L.

Yelp
Decent mall with a mix of new and old. There's a big parking structure and some outdoor parking around the center. I wasn't really sure what to expect when I first got there but there's a really nice courtyard which sports a huge Christmas tree right now on some AstroTurf. It looks like they have some events in the center because when we got there they had a DJ that was mixing tunes for a workout group that was led by a fitness instructor. We entered the mall from the food court side. This looks like it has been recently renovated. It's very spacious and has some different options like poke, ramen, tacos, and a Panda Express. There's seating both inside and out on a patio. There's also connected restaurants across a walkway. You can get to the main part of the mall which is indoors when you go straight through. Inside there's a mix of all of your typical stores that you'd find including a Macy's, Lego Store, Hot Topic, and GameStop. You can see what my priorities are. The last time I was there Forever 21 was in the midst of it's store closing sale. There was also a unit occupied by the Peninsula Humane Society and they were running a kitten/cat adoption program.
google avatar

Joanna T.

Yelp
This a true shopping with classic & contemporary shops. Makes shopping for Christmas gifts easy. There was Lego Store (the assembled models on display were so cool); an Apple Store; Mac Cosmetics; a packed nail salon; Macy's; etc. etc. The corridor art was a delightful surprise! Definitely will return to shop around some more. Convenient to Hillsdale Caltrain station.
google avatar

Shanna K.

Yelp
For me, this is not the most useful mall. It's small, many of the shops seem to close earlier than stated hours, the anchor stores (Nordstrom and Macys) have a very limited selection, there are several vacant areas and the rest of the shops are somewhat basic. I don't pay particular attention to mall food so, YMMV there. Across the way is Trader Joe's and that's helpful. Bottom line for me is that it's good if I need to run into See's or Lolita to get a gift... or if I can preorder and pickup something at another store but that's about where it ends.
google avatar

Elizabeth I.

Yelp
This is a great fantastic mall with many great shops and fantastic restaurants.Close to the Caltrain station.I recommend this mall.I love the landscaping. They did a great job and the food terrace is very nice
google avatar

Kay D.

Yelp
This mall is so bougie! I was at Stonestown mall in sf recently, Hillsdale shopping center made Stonestown mall look so bad in comparison. I'm never going back to Stonestown. The mall was recently remodeled with a terrace by the restaurants area. This mall had several parts, it even had a Trader Joe's on the other side of the mall. I'm very impressed with the quality of shops, restaurants there. I'm definitely going back to shop and experience the Cineplis theater. The only area of improvement is the mall WiFi and cell phone service. At some shops I didn't get any service or WiFi.
google avatar

Kim G.

Yelp
This mall is a perfect balance between an indoor and an outdoor mall. Love the outdoor design, the interior (Shopping areas) can definitely improve a bit. The food court area is quite advance in terms of design and ambiance. I love the different games such as sandbox, the escape room and a create your own slime shop etc. I love the variety of food they offer from American, to Mexican, Asian, Italian as well as bobas! Did I mention the excellent service at Cinepolis as well?! It's pretty cool here! Only downside is their EV charger is pricey than the surrounding areas. They could also use more security presence. Other than that, fun times!
google avatar

Teresa P.

Yelp
Today we were at the mall. It was a rainy day and the place was busy. We saw at least 15 dogs walking around the mall. A couple of which were in the food court area. Of these dogs we saw 2 of them pooping in the middle of the walkway. 1 smeared poop near a door entrance to a store, and pee on a potted plant. I find this disgusting and not sure way animals are allowed or why owners think it is okay to bring there dog here. I am not sure I want to come back here. We saw a few of the dogs walk by 2 security guards, but they said nothing.
google avatar

Kari C.

Yelp
Only dropped by for an hour or so before a meeting. Parking was easy by the Macy's, but spaces are small. There is a good variety of shops and plenty of seating in the food court. There is security present. Most of the mall looked clean and spacious. I found the family area, but it was hella hidden! Near the center of the mall, opposite of Macy's, there is a very long corridor on the second floor. It's labeled for restrooms on the top. The room is at the end of the corridor on the left. They have a changing area with sink and paper towels. There were two separate nursing rooms with curtains. Great for breastfeeding or pumping milk with privacy. There was even a vending machine with small packs if diapers for $2-3, squeeze juices, and water! The area was pretty clean. Hardly anyone there on a weekday night. Better than the lounges in Nordstrom. Also, there's a filtered water station to fill water bottles next to the restrooms. The water was very good and free!

Yelp
Mall is currently still under renovations over where sears used to be. It looks like it will be really nice and relaxing in the outside area but I don't know how I feel About the fire pits they have lit in the night time you can sit and keep warm with the fire but I can see an accident waiting to happen. The flames are warming but they are flames so fire is fire I can see a child teenager senior or even an adult having an accident here either by hurting themselves on the glass around the fire or from the flames themselves. I saw several young children playing around the fire and no adult supervision in the immediate area. Parents are not always watching their little ones like their supposed to. Teenagers seem to get into trouble in the night time also so hopefully my worried wart self is wrong and no one ever gets hurt by or from these fire pits They have a really pretty Christmas tree lite in the open park area over by the new Apple Store and have some pretty light show going on during the holidays too Can't wait to see what the future holds for these new area

Very thankful to have a mall that is thriving and going to get even better. Not too many such malls in America, that's for sure. The recently completed inside food court and outdoor dining/shopping area is a beautiful place to hang out with family and friends. They're going to open another dining section with The Refuge and some other places in there. Plenty of parking, a Shake Shack, a movie theater, ramen, etc....it's great!
