Hilltop Inn

My wife and I recently stayed at the Hilltop Inn for a long weekend. Everything was better than anticipated -- definitely a good choice. The location is a short walk to Bowen's Wharf, Brick Marketplace, and Washington Square (for many shops and restaurants/bar options). The properly and house were lovely, and the staff and innkeeper very friendly. The room was very comfortable, clean, and quiet. We enjoyed the breakfasts and snack offered. Highly recommended.

This place is great and well maintained! We stayed in the Stewart room on first floor. Huge bathroom and comfortable bed. Little side porch with 2 chairs come with this room. Also, bigger patio to sit out back. No smoking anywhere on premise. Breakfast was wonderful and we really enjoyed talking to Michelle the 2 mornings we saw her. Nice location to walk to many shops and restaurants! Free parking. Would highly recommend! I thing that was confusing, we did a direct booking that had a small discount. Even though my paperwork clearly said, free cancellation till a certain time, the innkeeper told me there was no cancellations or changes on that type of reservations..?? It was all fine for us because we didn't want to cancel, but just something that should be address with their booking process!

Most excellent. Location was great, hospitality was over the top, room was beautiful and the food…out of this world. My wife has Celiac’s Disease and Liz was very accommodating with gluten free things for her to enjoy. Newport was a wonderful anniversary destination and Hilltop Inn was one we will definitely return to!

We always enjoy our stay at Hilltop Inn. The location gives walking access to shops, restaurants and lots of interesting places to explore. The rooms have comfortable beds, nice bathrooms and many have fireplaces. The breakfast is always delicious. Liz and the other staff always make us feel welcome.

The rain shower was awesome. Room was very clean and spacious. Only problem was the pillow toppers on the bed felt like you were sinking, too soft. Breakfast was very good. We enjoyed the three nights that we stayed. Loved the jacuzzi tub it was a nice relaxing soak.

Hilltop Inn is very convenient for walking to the wharf area and around the town. Guests can walk to many of the local restaurants and shops. The inn itself is very clean, nicely furnished, and each of the five guest rooms has its own large modern bathroom. |Liz, the innkeeper, and staff are very accommodating and helpful. Full breakfast each day is really delicious.|My husband and I only stay at Hilltop Inn when we visit Newport.

It was evident that the Hilltop Inn is a leader in hospitality. The grace, warmth, and service extended to us by the innkeeper, Liz, went beyond our expectations. Each guest receives undivided attention; personalized recommendations for touring and restaurants; and exceptional accommodations when staying at the centrally located Hilltop Inn in Newport, Rhode Island. ||Hilltop boasts beautifully maintained architectural details that add to its historic charm. Modern day amenities compliment each room. We certainly appreciated the massive bathroom with a walk-in shower and whirlpool bathtub; gas lit fireplaces; king-sized bed; and balcony. Plus, the room and inn were SPOTLESS and ON-SITE PARKING was available (a must in Newport). ||When choosing a B&B there are always certain expectations for accommodations (i.e. quiet respites; the anticipation of meeting new people; appetizing breakfast). Hilltop acknowledges each guest's preferences by offering several common areas that include a sunlit spot with tables; a seating area with a cozy fireplace, and a smaller room for reading, chatting, or playing board games. Coffee, tea, and snacks are available throughout the day. Breakfast was homemade and delicious. ||We highly recommend the Hilltop and are thankful for the unforgettable memories we made. Their kindness was extraordinary.

Way too expensive for what they offer We paid a fortune to stay at this B&B and expected a high level of service, beautiful rooms and a generous breakfast. Instead we encountered a nasty Innkeeper, so-so rooms, and a very disappointing breakfast --with only 6 English muffins for 11 people and no other bread or muffin products. The only truly nice thing about the Inn was the bathrooms.

Doors locked and no one there to greet us when we arrived. We were asked for food preferences but they were ignored and was served exactly what I asked not to be served. The bed is HARD!!! I've never wanted morning to come so much in my life, just so I could get out of that bed. As we were laying down for a nap our smoke alarm started to chirp. Uuugghh! In fairness it is beautiful and wonderfully located, just wish there was more personal touch and a little give a care.

Awesome location, close enough to walk downtown without being in the middle of the crowds. Close enough to walk to the Cliff Walk, the mansions. Great room, the shower with the multiple heads is amazing. Wonderful service, and very accommodating to later arrivals!

If a cozy inn and warm hospitality is your thing, then I highly recommend staying here. This was our first trip to Newport and we had an amazing time. Liz, the innkeeper, does a fantastic job of running the place. She takes the time to get to know her guests prior to arrival, and does what she can to make the stay a memorable one. We stayed in the Touro room which was so nicely decorated. The bathroom was amazing with all tile, a lovely vanity, jacuzzi tub, and a huge shower with body sprays. The bed was large and comfortable with little nooks built in the wall to serve as nightstands. We made it to breakfast only once since we were enjoying sleeping in for once! The spread had a great variety of yogurt, fruit, granola, toast, jam, juices, eggs, hash brown casserole, cold cereal, coffee and more! As we meandered down on our last morning after missing breakfast, Liz even offered to get us something, but we decided to walk around and grab an early lunch. The Hilltop Inn is right in the middle of everything so it was an easy walk to Thames St., the wharf, and all the great restaurants/bars. If you enjoy being active, you can leave your car parked and walk to just about anything. We even walked over to the beginning of the Cliff Walk, down to the Breakers and back. We will definitely be returning to both Newport and the Hilltop Inn!

This place exceeded our expectations. We stayed in the Kay room. It was a very nice mixture of old world style with modern amenities and commodities. All your toiletries needs are met, from a vanity mirror to makeup remover to shampoos, moisturizer, hair dryer, and more. Plenty of towels and nice sized bathroom. Excellent shower and jacuzzi. Hot water didn't run out, nice strong stream, etc The room was lovely, very neat, well kept, lovely fireplace (says to use) and an amazingly comfortable king size bed. Neither of us had an ache or pain from sleeping on the bed. The room was well insulated (we were there during the colder months). There is a nice private patio overlooking Kay street if you want to lounge, nap, or smell some fresh air. Maid service was wonderful. We never needed to bother for anything extra. They cleaned and supplied well. Downstairs there was plenty of common space. Board games were available, snacks and coffee/tea Really just an excellent experience and stay. Liz was superb. She does an amazing job with maintaining this inn and making her guests feel comfortable. I would be back here 100x Way better than a commercial hotel AND it's walking distance from every major point. We barely used our car.

Room selection not honored; rude Inn keeper Unfortunately, we can not give this inn more than 1 star because they did not honor our reservation, did not give us notice that they were switching our room until it was too late to do anything about it, and rudely blamed us for their mistake. We booked three specific rooms four months in advance for an important family celebration. We had done a lot of research and picked this Inn because they had a room on the ground floor available for our desired weekend, which was important to us because my father had recently had heart surgery and is not supposed to walk steps. We confirmed on the phone that the room we booked for my parents was in fact on the ground floor with no steps and also that it had a walk in shower before booking. In the days leading up to the trip we had at least 6 communications about our arrival time, allergies, etc. It was not until we were on the road close to Newport that Inn Keeper Liz McDonnell off-handedly mentioned that she had changed my parents room assignment and given them a room on the 2nd floor. At that point we were trapped. There was no way to recoup from this or to change plans at this late date. Liz said unapologetically that there was nothing she could do, except try to move my parents to a different hotel if she could find one (the whole point of this trip was for my whole family to be together to celebrate an important occasion after a very difficult year). She said that we should have told her in writing that there was a "special need". First of all, we did have a conversation about this on the phone before booking, but second of all, why did we need to disclose our medical history in order to be guaranteed to get the specific room we booked? This is an bed and breakfast with 6 rooms. You book specific rooms. If the room you select is not guaranteed, this should be indicated on the Inn's website. More infuriating than the fact that our reservation was not honored was the way we were treated by Inn Keeper Liz McDonnell. Rather than acknowledging that this was a mistake and trying to find a resolution, she told us that it was our fault for not notifying them that we really needed the room we booked. She said she had never had a guest complain about her switching rooms on them in the 6 years she has been doing this. I guess it is a common practice to switch rooms? So if you are planning to stay at this Inn and need the ground floor room, I would suggest you fax over a doctor's note to guarantee that your room selection will be honored.

Such an amazing experience at the Hilltop Inn. Very clean and cozy! The manager Liz is very accommodating and has made us feel extremely welcomed. We are so grateful for her hospitality! We will be coming back for sure!

The Best!! Cute, good located, cozy b&b in Newport :) super romantic bedrooms with fireplace, both Janet's are amazing super friendly, they food is fantastic, they have always coffee and and fresh muffins and cookies :) We'll come back!

Wonderful anniversary experience in their Murray room! The inn is professionally run by housekeepers of many years of experience. Murray room being cost effective had all the perks that I wasn't expecting such as a fire place, Jacuzzi bath tub, and a TV in the bathroom(if that is at the top of your list). The housekeepers ensure that guests are constantly nourished with tea time (which also includes snacks BTW 3 to 5 pm), breakfast(with made to order specials of the day), and even lay out a plate of munchies for the night. The garden is a beautiful sight and tended to well. The house itself is renovated and decorated with plenty attention to detail, which I believe will not slip past anyone. One last thing is that I like the fact that their website posts last-minute availability making it easy for people to be spontaneous or simply lazy patrons like me.

I can't say enough amazing things about this Inn! It is absolutely adorable! The beds were extremely comfortable. This is where we stayed when we got engaged so this is extremely special to us. The Innkeeper, Liz, was fantastic, she made our weekend so special, helping my fiance with dinner reservations and leaving champagne in the room upon our return! She is very nice and so accommodating. We had stayed here for the fourth as well and had a great stay! They Inn makes an amazing breakfast the following morning. The Inn is located in the heart of downtown Newport which made it easy for us to walk down town to dinner and a quick ride to the beach. I would recommend this Inn to anyone visiting the Newport area!

We arrived one month early (my mistake) and Liz barely missed a beat. We were sent to dinner and returned to find our room ready and waiting. Tuoro room is so beautiful and cozy, with gas log fireplace and outrageously comfortable bed. The 10 min walk to restaurants and shops was perfect for us. Liz put out a great breakfast including endless coffee, delicious granola, home fried potatoes, eggs, bacon, sausage, assorted breads and waffles. Highly recommended!

My girlfriends and I stayed at the Hilltop Inn a couple weeks back. It was absolutely adorable! The beds were extremely comfortable. The Innkeeper was very nice and accommodating. She made an amazing breakfast the following morning. The Inn is located in the heart of downtown Newport so we were able to walk to dinner and the bars. That was a huge plus!

Wow! We feel so relaxed. What a beautiful interior. Classically designed and a cozy feel. Upon our arrival we were greeted by Kathleen. She gave us a nice little tour of the home as well as a recommendation to a location of a beautiful sunset. In the morning Jessica gave us a good morning smile before we headed out for the cliff walk, which is a must do. We came back to the inn with a gorgeous breakfast setting and everything was deliciouses. Jessica did a fantastic job cooking the meal. A young irish lass whom I can't remember her name was simply wonderful she waited on us like a 5 star restaurant would. Forgive us for not remembering your name. Thank you hilltop staff for giving us a wonderful stay. We will be back!

Just spent 5 nights at the Hilltop Inn celebrating our anniversary. This place is awesome and is so cozy, warm, and relaxed. Janet, the Innkeeper, and her assistant Jessica were very focused on making our stay most enjoyable. They provided outstanding service, great breakfast, and wonderful afternoon teas. Our room was very well maintained and the bed very comfortable. This is a great high quality place to stay in Newport.

Loved the hotel. My husband and I stayed here visiting Massachusetts this summer. Great service, spectacular rooms, wonderful breakfast. Just one tiny drawback: the building is old and so the corridor walls are slightly thin and not soundproof. In the last day we were there, it got a little noisy as there was a wedding party staying at the hotel. Walking in and out of their rooms and their talking loudly in the hallway was easily heard from within the room. Other than that, I'd say the hotel was a great choice and a wonderful place to stay. I'd come here again.

Can't say enough great things about this inn! We have been coming to Newport annually for the past three years and this is by far the best place we've stayed. Liz was amazing and even upgraded us when she had a cancellation. The room was impeccably clean with a gorgeous bathroom and super soft bed. Breakfast the next morning was delicious and held in the cutest dining room. With it being a short walk to town, it will definitely be a place we look forward to returning to for many years to come!

We loved this place! Beautiful, clean, and quiet house, with little sitting rooms to hang out and relax in between outings around town. Great breakfast, and coffee and yummy snacks are out all day. Perfect location: walking distance to Thames St. & Spring St., and to the Cliff Walk, Breakers, and other mansions. Liz was so helpful and welcoming. Stay here!

Very warm and inviting Inn. The room (Murray) was absolutely beautiful and kept in perfect condition. The inn is right down the street from down town New Port and the Inn keeper was very helpful with any questions I had. Highly recommend and will be visiting again soon!
