How White Lily Flour Began Appearing Across the Country | Eater

"A Beacon Hill grocery where a surprise shipment of White Lily arrived just as a local food writer was running low; the store’s general manager treated the purchase as a one-time emergency shipment to cover shortages. Staff had to re-bag and price 50-pound food-service sacks into retail sizes, and while some customers were excited specifically about the brand, most were simply relieved to find flour on the shelves." - Naomi Tomky

Google
Chinese restaurant in the back says it is open until 7:30. They close half an hour to an hour early EVERY DAY. So if you're wanting to order what you actually want to eat and not be paying for a mixed plate with something you don't want, show up at least 2 hours before they close. I used to come here at least once a week for Chinese food. After my work schedule changed I had to come later in the day and I have been able to get what I wanted one time out of the last five or six times I came. Not worth it. If they actually followed their schedule they'd get a good rating from me. A business being open when they say they are should be a standard.

Great place to shop with limited parking. The store clerks are friendly as well as the people within the surrounding area.Close to public transportation and the waterfront.

Yelp
Yet another place I've been to ever since I was little and lived around Beacon Hill! Awesome in both their deli and overall as a grocery store. As a deli, they actually have the best char siu (Chinese BBQ pork, pictured) out of any other place I've tried in the Seattle area. I'm not kidding, it's been the best for my family and me even after years of getting it and what even seemed like a change in staff behind the deli at one point. It could even compete with Kau Kau over in Chinatown! It's so juicy, doesn't leave a dry, sandy texture in your mouth while you're eating it, and has some slight burn marks in all the right places. The BBQ pork is sometimes kept near the hot foods area near the deli, and the staff can cut it for you whether you grab those portions or get them up at the deli counter. As a grocery store, they're not very huge but also means it's easier to find stuff. It's gone through a ton of changes over the years, and now the floor tiles are a darker color when they used to be white like the walls long ago. Their produce and dairy is usually very fresh whenever my mom and I get them here, and staff - some of whom I've seen working there since I was little - is very friendly. I don't live as close to here as I used to anymore, but I always think of this place whenever I pass by the area since it gives me a nice, nostalgic feeling, especially since I was born and raised in the Beacon Hill neighborhood.

Yelp
I miss the Red Apple in the promenade. Anyone from Seattle that remembers the Sweet Spot and the businesses of color pre gentrification knows how vibrant it was on 23rd with the YO program, the barbershop, and blockbuster. I had to give that location a shout out. The Hilltop Red Apple has a similar vibe. This is my go to if I don't want to cook and get some Mac n cheese, greens, catfish, and Asian comfort food. The pre-made sandwiches are delicious as well and this location feels like a bigger version of a family ran store. I remember being a kid and getting a .25 c Western Family cola from the vending machine outside. Yes, I go way back. If you're in Beacon Hill walking around Red Apple you may run into a Lola, Tia, Ayee, or a multitude of cultural names you call elder or family member. I sometimes see 3 generations of folx. Thank you Red Apple for the good food, food made with care and love, and feeding the many cookouts

Yelp
The service that I received at this location was and is very good. This location is a local neighborhood, grocer, that is not your typical, Safeway, Fred Meyer and definitely not a Walmart. This Little but yet mighty Beacon Hill, neighborhood store is pretty great. I'll add pic's on my next visit. It has just about everything the larger store provides, minus a pharmacy, if I stand correct. Deli, Meat department, Floral, and Bakery. I only come here, as I don't live in Seattle, any longer to pick-up last-minute item I need when attending an event in Seattle, Go Mariners.

Yelp
I visited on a Saturday around 6:30 PM to buy flowers. The staff was friendly, and checkout was efficient. Parking was free for one hour for customers.

Yelp
Came here for a quick shop. Found everything I needed relatively easy without any help. There's a lot packed into this store and it can feel overwhelming. But it's the only market in the area really, so they have to pack it in and can charge a little bit more. Prices are going to be a bit higher than you might be used to. I would say this is perfect for something you need mid week but not a store you should rely on. It's well lit, it has an okay smell, and you can relatively move in and out of the aisle with ease. The checkout lines are super close to the aisles and so it can bleed into one another pretty easily and make it hard to distinguish or maneuver. The food here is okay quality. For produce..I typically use jt for the same day use and wouldn't let it sit in the fridge for too long. Okay store to meet your needs in the short term.

Yelp
They have a variety of farm fresh goods and many different cultural offerings that are reasonably priced.

Yelp
I love this place. The selections are amazing, we need black folks in the kitchen tho, Oh I forgot, food isn't homemade anymore nvm
google avatar

Yelp
Love the staff. The best grocery store in the south end. Great selection and good prices
google avatar

Yelp
The hot bar on either side used to be slamming. Now it's meh. Sometimes the food is still cold inside. Sometimes you get 8 small pieces of General Taos on your rice bowl... The service is mixed. You take the good with the bad. It's the only store in the area.

Yelp
This is an update to my original rating. The rating holds, this is by far my favorite grocery store, and I go there weekly. The staff is unfailingly helpful and courteous. They have a holiday punch-card program by which you can earn $$ back by spending X amount of money. Great program. But they do it with paper punch cards, so customers have to stand there while these poor front-line workers have to punch holes out of a paper card, write it on a piece of paper, then staple it to something else... Love the cozy feeling of that 1966 technology, but I've watched people wait in line and get frustrated, even though the workers do all this 'busy work' as quickly as they can. It's the 21st century, guys. Get a card you can swipe, for heaven's sake!

Yelp
Great independent grocery store that had a great selection, super helpful crew and a great location if you are in Beacon Hill! The deli is great too!

Yelp
I work nearby so this is the Red Apple I go to . They have quite a good selection of most things u need from Kombucha to a pretty good fresh fruit and veggie area . The main reason I go here is for the deli in the back . They all kinds of goodies from fish to ribs , fried chicken and more . The Chinese food side is my favorite. Everything is always fresh and nice and they give good portions and the price is right . Now that I'm writing this I'm getting hungry. Go check it out you'll be glad u did .

Yelp
Love the hilltop red apple market in beacon hill. There is a woman who works there name June who is one of my favorite faces in the city she is so wonderful and personable. It isn't just June everyone there is so warm and friendly. People sometimes complain about the price point but tbh red apple has a mix affordable and expensive options I can buy produce and basics there that cost the same as Safeway. Also the hot food in the back of the store is 10/10 I often get Chinese food from the hot bar on days I'm too busy to pack a lunch.
google avatar

Yelp
Great little market around Beacon Hill neighborhood. The store have small but have plenty of the good selection of foods. Lets talk about their hot deli. China Cafe is one of the spot I go to for lunch once a while. It is only $7.99 for their daily special. Pick fried rice or chow mein and two entrees. I mostly get their curry chicken, pork chop, string bean and chicken, and orange chicken. These are my top choices to pick from. It is very affordable and tasty!

Yelp
The deli here is great found all the items to be fresh and the staff is friendly. The store is alway clean and I even find it more clean then my local safe way

Tom H.

Yelp
Love this grocery and the employees. Been shopping here for 24 years and have noted improvements, promotions and, attention given to the community. Now that I am older and no longer driving, I would appreciate a designated bench to sit on as I call for Uber. Sometimes I have to adjust what I buy to take the bus (right in front- most convenient). Just a thought.

Yelp
Really good food and shopping I go there for the catfish it's fried right and the sides are very tasty then the other side is Chinese food very good

Yelp
The price of products in this grocery is way more expensive than Whole Foods, but has much lower quality! Avocado was on sale. $5.99 for 7 small one. We cut opened 3 of them and they all have bad bruises. Tortilla chips were on sale 2 for $7. The same one can be found in QFC for $1.50! I always want to try the drink called Ripple, but couldn't find it in Safeway or QFC. I am surprised this place has it, so I bought it. It was $6.49. I am pretty sure it is overprice again but I have a hard time finding this. And guess what?! Whole Foods has it for $4.99! To be fair, this place does carry more interesting Mexican ingredients than regular groceries. It is in a very convenient location (right in front of the light rail station). If am not in a hurry, I would definitely go somewhere else instead of this place.

Yelp
The deli has delicious food. I can't say enough about the yams especially. Paired with the chicken strips and green bean casserole. The staff was also very nice and happy to help! Will definitely be going back for more. My boyfriend got the hot wings and jojo's which were also fresh and delicious.

Yelp
The deli at Hilltop Red Apple Market, grocery store that sells Mongolian beef hot dishes, has false advertising. The med box (8cm x 7cm) on the display shelf lists one flat rate price and they actually charge customers another, higher rate. They charge you by the pound for your food and not by the price that is marked on the small box (6cm x 6cm) and display. I wish this deli or merchant would post their real prices and remove the fake display. I was not happy because in the past they charged the amount on the box in the display. This is a new change and they are not posting their real prices. Their actions are going to make the entire grocery store look bad if they don't correct this. I called the store to complain to the manager, John and he said he would talk to the owner of the deli restaurant who has the wrong prices posted on his hot dish boxes.

Billy D.

Yelp
This is indeed the best grocery store in the world, and has the best staff ever. The negative reviews are from interlopers who have no business being within blocks of it. If you don't like it, don't go there. Guaranteed you're not a South Seattleite. Don't come to our neighborhood and complain. We don't come to your country club and write bad reviews. Mind your business and go back to Bellevue. Or California. No one asked you anything.
google avatar

Mahasin H.

Yelp
The fruits & veggies are fresh and delicious. Nice assortment of organic choices as well. The Asian restaurant area inside has really good egg foo young. The gravy is so delicious over their fried rice.
google avatar

Megan L.

Yelp
I read a few negative reviews which made this grocery store sound like a dubious corner liquor store, so I was pleasantly surprised by what I found. It seemed more on the order of a small neighborhood Whole Foods than anything else. Things were generally pretty pricey but they had a nice selection. We were in the neighborhood for a few days and I appreciated being able to walk by to pick up stuff for breakfast and later dinner.

Yelp
Friendliest staff of any grocery store I've ever been to! They have a big selection and lots of local company goods. The Chinese food place in the back is solid and so is there deli food place. I've gotten the in house made sausages before too and they were fantastic! Would recommend.

Yelp
I love their Chinese take out special 2 entry and side rice or chow mein for $7.59 is a great deal. And I like their Orange chicken and general tso chicken.

Yelp
This is my local neighborhood grocery store. Pros: Location: Very convenient location that is accessible to different public transportation. It is located across from the Beacon Hill light rail station. Lots of parking available. Service: All the staffs are very friendly and helpful. The checker who assisted me, his name is Ryan, was very fast and efficient so there wasn't a long wait at each check stand. Quality: I shop here mainly for their fresh produce. The produce section is always well stocked and kept clean. I cannot recall a time where I was disappointed in any of their items. I find that their quality is similar, if not better, than the products of QFC down the hill. Efren, Mapo and Joseph are the main guys that managed the produce area. They each are very knowledgeable with the items that they carry. Their products are also very organic-friendly, catering to a mass amount of local shoppers in this area. They also have a variety of beautiful-fresh flower arrangements. Beware, they get very busy during Valentines Day and Mothers Day. I suggest that you come early or pre order the flowers so they do not run out. There are some ethnic items that you would not find at chain grocery stores. Deli: The have a great deli section. The Chinese food is made fresh daily and is actually very good! I'm always skeptical about Chinese deli food but they uphold a higher quality than those you would get from stores like Safeway. They also have excellent fried chicken. Their meat is moist and tender with a well-seasoned light batter. I am not a fan of heavy-battered greasy fried chicken. They make theirs just right. Events: They are a community driven local store. Special events for the local shoppers take place throughout the year. Around Christmas time, Santa Claus makes an appearance for photo opportunities. This is a great alternative if you want to avoid the long lines at the mall. Around Easter, an egg hunt is set up for the kids with generous gifts given out. Not to mention the Easter Bunny also makes a special appearance. During the summer, they hold a tent event displaying all the different fruits and veggies selling for a fraction of their normal price. The different types of events can uplift the community spirit. CONS: Price: Some of their items can be a bit pricey but then you always gotta pay a little more for better quality.

Yelp
Stand up operation all around! This store has everything. Great fish. Awesome employees too.

Yelp
This use to be called Hilltop but now is call Red Apple Market but still here competing against the big boy chains..so yeah, I am a fan of this place. Our neighborhood only non-club grocery store like someone has mention and it has a nice selection in the deli/ hot asian food in the back on the store. I come here mostly for the fried chicken...best deal meal ($5) in town or nice prepare dessert pie for $9.99 that I can pickup for a dinner party in a jiffy. Also, this place carry speciality stuff that I can not find at QFC, ABC, Traders Joe like Mum Mum...delicious healthy rice crackers that my daughter loves. Yeah, you are paying more here but you will get the best customer service in return.

Yelp
Thank you Red Apple for requiring everybody to wear a mask while shopping! I feel safe in your store. We are still in a pandemic and good hygiene and social distancing protects our health. plus, I like your products and variety.
google avatar

Daren D.

Yelp
I usually come by at night on the occasion after work for munchies, the Bolthouse vanilla chai and sometimes the fusion burritos from the back (North African, Roasted Veggie, etc). Good place to shop and am glad they stay open (usually?) until 11pm.

Yelp
Guys it's a fantastic market to have on beacon hill. Okay I get it, you might think it's a little bit expensive but so are the properties around it. All their merchandise is priced right is all I gotta say (if you consider the area, it's location, and the convenience). I get it, people are cheap but hey this red apple is located in a very busy location. If you're being cheap, just get yourself the daily specials. Those are really good. Don't go to the sushi isle though, not the best. That sushi is just decently made. Cashiers are amazing. Boss is welcoming to me. I like the staff. Very helpful.

Yelp
Because lady's at the deli just keep taking instead of taking care of costumers they burn the sandwich that I order she went and grab another one I told her that I have no time to wait another 15 min tht I don't want it anymore one of them got to the register and said that "'she check the sandwich and wasn't burn "' I told her it was I saw it I told her why she grab another one then? All of these in front of the manager and the guy said nothing.exelent customer service.
google avatar

Jason C.

Yelp
Hilltop Red Apple Market is wonderful and well stocked. I've truly appreciated the friendly staff and the amount of food they've packed into their many isles. Its a great local market and can easily compete with larger super markets! A big thank you to the staff for staying open during the pandemic, you all ROCK!
google avatar

Brian W.

Yelp
This little grocery store is a notch better than the super-ghetto grocery stories that litter the Rainier Valley... but not by much. Though, the armed security guard adds to the ambiance. The place is tiny, cramped, and has a pretty limited selection of items compared to larger stores. The prices are also higher, and it doesn't seem like you get much in return other than free parking, if you need it. $5 toothpicks?! $1 garlic. There is no butcher counter, though you can find them hiding in the back behind the Wizard of Oz curtains. I had to rustle one of them up to inquire as to the mysterious whereabouts of beef tenderloin: "oh, we don't carry that." Say what??! I almost settled on some NY strip, but the cuts were really thin and I noticed they had been packed 6 days (!) prior. Umm... no thank you. Oh, there are no public restrooms. I think that about covers it.
google avatar

Yelp
Let's be real Very friendly staff and quick check outs. They have a little bit of everything, but it is much more expensive. Food, sweets, animal section, tiny flower section, cards, Seattle Souvenirs, Lotto, hot food to go (China Cafe with a good daily special of 6.99 for a big plate of food you choose from, and a section of wings, tater tots, macaroni, etc). Amazon pickup and Wells Fargo ATM outside. It is conveniently located for quick errands, but thank the high prices to the gentrification in the area (funny how the majority complaining caused the problem, now here come the attacks of how I am "mean," "inappropriate" and other explanations). The only reason I am docking off a star, is because of Cuong. He is rude. He was laughing at a man for buying lots of Lotto tickets saying "good luck with that." He scared my father, who speaks limited English, saying his ID is fake, joke or not. Manager said he would talk to him, so the Manager is very attentive. He was also the one who is seen in the picture where the store attacked a POC student "stealing." Overall great place. Shout out to the older blonde lady who works the Service Center, who greets everyone with a smile and "honey" and Jenny who is friendly. Overall great place.

Bill C.

Yelp
Yes, the staff is friendly but $8.00 for a gallon of milk? Come on! Go to Costco. It's a lot cheaper. The lady working at the lotto line never stops talking to people she knows disregarding customers in line.

Yelp
This is a nice little local store located in Beacon Hill. My husband and I were staying at our Air BnB house, and this store was super close by. It's right across from a light-rail station and two bus stops. We came in on game day (49ers vs. Hawks) and they had the game BLARING over the intercom. That made me smile. Seattle-ites (is that the correct term?) know how to show their pride! The prices seem to be reasonable; the store offers national and store branded items. There is a deli in the rear of the store, a wine/liquor section, and a meat counter (if my memory serves me correctly). Oh! They have a Chinese hot food section. AMAZING! It looked SO good; I was sad that we didn't have enough time for a taste test!

Michael B.

Yelp
This place has been amazing ever since I was a little kid it's been consistent still amazing! Every time I come into town I pay my respects their fried catfish is amazing not your average grocery store deli!!
google avatar

Andrea H.

Yelp
This is a great local supermarket, and is really helpful when you want to pick up a few things but don't want to travel to one of the larger supermarket chains. When they have sales, the prices tend to be quite good. They had wild salmon on sale recently for a very good price. For items like bread, they seem to rotate which type they have on sale fairly regularly, so there will probably be a sale on the one you want if you wait a while and watch for the sale. They have a good variety of products for sale, including some unusual ones. However, their prices on some basic items can be a bit high. I wouldn't buy peanut butter here, for example. Be sure you know what a reasonable price for the item you want is, and go elsewhere if it happens to be overpriced here.
google avatar

Tan Lo S.

Yelp
This is the only place I know of right now that sells my favorite Top Ramen!!! Creamy Chicken Noodle. Haha, this place is reliable for my top ramen! This place is pretty nice and I have been coming here for years. I love this location but I also love the location on Jackson. both are friendly, good quality products, meat, produce and their selections are great. My favorite part about Red Apple is their hot foods. Mm. They have delicious Chinese food, as well as fried chicken, jojo's, and other hot foods. Their hot wings are good too. It's cheap, and good quality.
google avatar

Bill N.

Yelp
This place feels like home I am here so much. I am a daily shopper and usually don't decide what I want to cook until I walk into the store. Prices are a little high and there are just a few things on sale but I have gotten used to it and don't shop anywhere else. The checkers are all very friendly and I know most of them. That's probably why it seems like home. The deli is not your normal deli and a lot of people just come in to buy their takeout stuff. I haven't done that much but I am a big fan of the Chinese BBQ pork. It is a small store compared to some of the big chains but they always seem to have what I want so I can't complain.

Jessica p.

Yelp
I love the food there it so good y'all should eat there the chow mein is so good and cheep it is
google avatar

Gil M.

Yelp
Great neighborhood grocery store. Every time I am in Seattle I stop by. Great hours, staff, products and location. Support small GOOD businesses.
google avatar

Eric H.

Yelp
As long as you treat it as an overpriced corner store, meant for getting a few emergency goods, it's a fine place. Redeeming qualities: Great people(!), good location, good produce, quirky hot food area in back. Slush Puppies! HUGE CON: Prices are crazycrazysuper high... we're talking more expensive than Whole Foods high. You'd have a cheaper shopping trip getting fancy organic stuff elsewhere than getting generic yucky pre-packaged food here. Every single item here is going to be $1-$4 more expensive than anything else I've seen in the Seattle area. I'm sure there are all sorts of legitimate arguments as to why prices are so inflated here (local? union? high rent? hate for poor people? social justice something?)... but as to its ability as a grocery store to actually feed my family... it's a massive failure.

Elaine P.

Yelp
There's a hometown vibe in this wonderful gem of a grocery store. Couldn't believe how beautiful the produce section was. There were three friendly and helpful produce folks stocking some fresh product. The displays were carefully and skillfully presented. You could really tell these guys took pride in their department. The variety of food offered store wide is amazing. I was able to get all my shopping done at Red Apple, and skipped a trip to Uwajimaya. The folks at the deli gave good recommendations, and the food was fresh and tasty. The clerk was efficient, professional and personable. All in all it was a great experience from entry to exit.
google avatar

Carla J.

Yelp
This is my old neighborhood and I love it! Same owners but they are continuing to evolve with the current times, market trends and such. The selections are wide and offer many different cultural cooking essentials! The meat department has an ACTUAL BUTCHERs that trim the meats on display to perfection. The produce department has sweet fresh colorful fruits and vegetables. The staff, helpful warm and friendly. When I enter the store I am welcomed by name "Hi Carla!" They look at what I buy and ask "whatcha cooking"? The owner Lenny can be caught cruising the store every now and then and is always welcoming and helpful. I enjoy the GREAT customer service, wide variety of selections of products. It is why I shop here, sometimes you wanna go, where everybody knows your name.... and their always glad you came....
google avatar

Rachel G.

Yelp
Red Apple Market is the jam! It's the closest new grocery store to my house and now I split my shopping between Red Apple and QFC depending on what I need. Their produce section is great and their ethnic aisles are the real deal. I've been buying random things I've never seen/tried and shaking things up in my kitchen! The checkers kind of seem like they're always in a bad mood, but if you've ever been grocery shopping in Europe it's not quite as bad as that. So, I just suck it up and pretend I'm grocery shopping in Italy.
google avatar

Lissa M.

Yelp
I like the idea of the Beacon Hill Red Apple better than I like the reality. After all, it's on my way home from downtown/Capitol Hill/points north. And they have a Wells Fargo ATM. And they're locally owned. And Beacon Hill is trying so dang hard. But the store's not open as early or as late, and it's always just a little dingy, and the prices are just a little higher than at my neighborhood Safeway. The organic produce is limited, and there's no in-store or in-parking-lot coffee stand. They have weird Mexican cakes instead of gross chocolate grocery store cupcakes: probably lots tastier, but sometimes a gross chocolate cupcake is exactly what you want. I'll continue to return, because I like the idea of it. With any luck, the reality will also improve.
google avatar

Joel L.

Yelp
This is my neighborhood grocery store and it's crazy mix of food is a good reflection of the neighborhood. There is a great Mexican and Asian section. It is clean and well put together and it's always a pleasure to shop at. I've been in several other Red Apple markets and this one is the nicest. It's not the biggest store and so it does not have the greatest and biggest selection of anything. They don't have a bakery for example but they still have a decent selection of fresh donuts brought in every day. They do have a few nice bonuses from a nice wine selection, coin star, even a movie rental machine. A good all around neighborhood grocery store at the heart of Beacon Hill.
