Google
One word of advice, go to Hilltop Restaurant hungry! My husband and I both ordered the Northern breakfast and it was delicious. The hash browns were very tasty and the biscuits and gravy were outstanding. The biscuits were very light and fluffy and the sausage gravy was delicate and not overwhelming. Their famous cinnamon roll is large enough for 2-4 people honestly; we took it to go. We don’t usually go out to breakfast, but Hilltop was definitely worth it!

Google
Ordered fish dinner, you get plenty, 5 pieces cod this is why I gave 4 stars grease tasted sour. French fries, coleslaw, and soup. The service was very friendly. They have bakery items largest cinnamon rolls I've ever seen. These were very good. I got two to go for breakfast the next morning.

Google
Great experience and customer service, love the cinnamon rolls!

Google
To be honest, I've never actually eaten in the restaurant, but I always, always, always stop for the baked goods. I'll go out of my way to make sure I pass through L'anse so I can stop. The sugar cookies alone are worth the trip. All the cookies are great and huge! You can also get bar cookies and the giant cinnamon rolls. I highly recommend any of them.

Google
First time here, GREAT food! The Hickory BBQ burger was phenomenal. Amazing taste, cooked to perfection, hamburger buns were fluffy yet crispy, cheese and bacon were a nice touch. The sauce was great. The golden fried Chicken tender basket was great as well. To top it all off we had to get a cinnamon roll!

Google
They have great baked goods, including cinnamon rolls!! Huge ones

Google
Great restaurant! Great prices! Great staff: even when they're busy, they make you feel like you are the most important customer! Phenomenal home cooked food! 100% will stop in every time we are in the UP!

Google
Delicious breakfast!! The hash browns were wonderful. My omelette had a lot of veggies in it, which I really enjoyed. The service was friendly and fast. The prices were reasonable. A great stop for a filling meal!

Yelp
A good variety of breakfast options. We both chose the lumberjack breakfast with 3 eggs, 3 sausage links, 3 bacon strips, hashbrowns, and toast (we got the cinnamon swirl). Our server was friendly and efficient, checking in with us several times. The food came out hot, quickly, and cooked correctly. The decor was cute, with flowers and murals set up all over the restaurant. They had many baked goods for sale, including a gigantic cinnamon roll. Tempting, but we were already full from breakfast. The food was all decently priced and we felt like we got a bargain!

Yelp
A totally solid breakfast. We'd eat here again. We managed to hit a morning where the staffing was a bit low so it took a while. If you find you're waiting for a seat a bit long and are on a tight schedule, this might be a sign to try elsewhere. Service took a little while, but the result was fresh and delicious.

Yelp
I stopped at Hilltop to check out its famous cinnamon rolls. I didn't eat one, but they look Ike's amazing. I had the best patty melt ever! It was heaven!! The fries were amazing as well. Lots of homemade baked goods to choose. The atmosphere is basic but the food is fantastic and the service was good. Very reasonably priced.

Yelp
Great service, great food perfect breakfast spot we will happily return. My wife had their famous giant cinnamon roll and loved it.

Kory C.

Yelp
The service here was absolutely amazing, not to mention the food was delectable and really filling! our server was kind, and didn't forget a thing. Just watch out for this ignorant woman, she likes to take pictures of you behind your back when you're trying to enjoy your meal. yikes.

Jackie D.

Yelp
It was a nice drive down to the restaurant. It's set up on a big hill. Food has served family style and hot. Our waitress was very friendly and helpful. Will definitely be going there again

Yelp
I had low expectations since reading the recent reviews. We arrived at 1:15 so assumed the lunch crowd would be gone. There were maybe 5 other tables taken. Overall the food was great but the service was not. Took 15 min to get menus and be greeted. 2 other couples arrived after us and and were given menus so I assumed the locals got better service than the tourists. Our server seemed exhausted. There was another server who generally seemed happy to be there and probably would've made a world of difference if we had her. I would recommend the chili or any burger. Sandwiches were okay. They had tons of sweet treats to go. We took a cinnamon roll and it was probably the best cinnamon roll I've ever had!

Dawn G.

Yelp
Worth the trip for a cinnamon roll 4 adults can share! Looking forward to next trip to da UP.

Shelly M.

Yelp
Stop every trip up to Houghton and grab a few cinnamon rolls! They are HUGE moist and delicious every time!

Yelp
We came for breakfast on Sunday morning, a group of 9. They were very short staffed but only seated what the servers could handle. Because of this, we did wait a few for a table which was totally fine. The server definitely knew what she was doing, despite being overworked. We are generally pretty low maintenance so did not require much attention. The food was exactly as expected, great because we didn't have to cook it. No complaints.

Lisa R.

Yelp
It may not look like much from the outside, but what the facade lacks, the food makes up for. Our party of 4 was not disappointed with the food or service. Their tomato basil soup is a must try...it is true comfort food in a bowl and homemade. I highly recommend buying their baked goods too (sold at the counter).

Yelp
This place has their amazing sweet rolls back to perfection. This mornings was the best I have had in over 45 years of enjoying annual trips here!

Yelp
Ok so had ordered ribs and a Rubin and we'll when I got there found out they had to replace the rib order with liver and onions because there were no more ribs? All good they called back before I got there. As you will see in the pics the food was so so and never put ketchup packets on someone's food without a paper between it as per people touch those with dirty hands and with Covid big No-No! Sandwich was off tasting and bread soggy, fry's over cooked, slaw was wilting. Sa for liver and onions over cooked and burnt so ate the potato and part of the Rubin rest in trash! See the

Yelp
Two sad attempts to acquire nice cinnamon rolls. Prayers for consistency for this great restaurant. Closed in times posted open. Supplies / help be available.
google avatar

Yelp
Enjoyed the fish basket. Fish battered just right, lots of fresh cut lemons, good tarter sauce. Huge delicious dinner roll. Generous serving of cole slaw. (I never understand restaurants that give tiny servings of coleslaw. What's up with that? Cabbage is cheap!) Good service accompanied by a favorite Keewenaw beer. On vacation in area, wish we had a restaurant like this at home!

Yelp
I came here to get food in my belly. I wanted that food to be a pasty, but they only sell frozen pasties up front to go. Then I was told I could order anything off the menu. "Aren't there pasties on the menu?" I asked. So yes, in fact, they do sell regular pasties, or at least reheating the frozen ones. Not a great start. I decided to roll with a giant cinnamon roll, since they're famous for that. I found the one with the least icing. Unwrapped it: not really fresh. I don't know how quickly these things go stale, but I wouldn't be surprised if they microwave it should you order in so that it comes out hot and supple instead of cold and stale. Yeah, no. Customer service ish, food quality ish, miss instead of a hit.

Yelp
Service was excellent (shoutout to Lila)! Giving mom & pop restaurant vibes. The food was some of the best food I've had in a while, my steak was made perfectly. Very affordable, had zeros issues. We got the lumberjack breakfast & steak and eggs with coffee for $30! We will definitely be coming back next time we are in the area.

Yelp
I can't speak for the current covid safety measures, but when I went, there was good social distancing and every server had on a mask. Dining area and restrooms are very clean. I love Hilltop. We stop here every year on our way back from our cottage for breakfast and cinnamon rolls to bring home. "Big as a baby's head" is how they are advertised, and I'd wager they are as big as the whole baby! I love the delicious apple center and these rolls make a great snack for our long drive home. I haven't had a breakfast that I haven't loved there. I look forward to it as a part of our trip. There is a cute little souvenir area too if you need last minute gifts for yourself or family.

Yelp
This restaurant was a fantastic find! We left our hotel and complimentary breakfast behind in houghton, MI in search of better breakfast options and a hot cup of coffee. The hilltop is located just south of downtown L'anse and shares a parking lot with the hilltop motel. Once we stepped inside we saw a counter filled with house made pastries and HUGE sticky buns, which this place is known for. It's set up seat yourself style so we grabbed a table and were immediately approached by a server. We got bottomless coffee. Typical diner coffee, a bit weak but hot and caffeinated lol The menu is diverse and there's options for everyone. Seems like this place is all around awesome for all meals. We went for breakfast of course so I can only speak to that for now though. I ordered a western omelet with the home made cinnamon swirl bread, my husband got a breakfast skillet and our son got cinnamon swirl French toast. We all had our eyes on the famous stuffed French toast but it was a situation of eyes no doubt being bigger than our stomachs. All three meals were perfectly portioned, properly priced and delicious. The waitress was polite and attentive and I only have good things to say. Also good to note that there's a cute little gift shop corner inside and displays of local fishing victories and a community animal shelter raffle. I love when a business effortlessly showcases the town and uplifts the community all at once and this place does. I'll be back for beer (yes they offered craft beer for dinner service!) and more food.

Yelp
When in the area we dine in & get take out here frequently... Friendly staff & quick service. Great food breakfast lunch or dinner. The dinner rolls are huge&delicious. The best soups around, and the greatest baked goodies, the peanut butter cookies yum! Definitely try a cinnamon roll.
google avatar

Joshua M.

Yelp
Delicious cinnamon roll. Pro tip - they have un-frosted ones in the back so you can add as you microwave and eat pieces over the next few days. They are huge!

Marc H.

Yelp
Good food at fair prices with a nice staff. The sweet rolls are not only enormous but they are tasty.
google avatar

Kevin B.

Yelp
Huge portions of All American food, great price and really good! Oh, and also clean with friendly servers, everything needed for a good meal. And tastefully decorated for Christmas, warm inside for both car and snowmobile explorers.
google avatar

Rachele D.

Yelp
Stopped in for a "sweet roll" (aka cinnamon roll) and I must say it lived up to the hype. One giant roll is big enough to share btwn 2-4 people! Restaurant and restrooms were super clean.

Yelp
We were greeted immediately upon entering for breakfast a bit before nine on a Monday. We were told to choose our own table (there were many to choose from) and got our menus quickly and ordered right away. The food came out almost alarmingly quickly, and it quickly became obvious that while the orders were correct, and the eggs cooked to order, the rest of the meal came off a steam table. The bacon was thin and limp, the hash browns cool and mushy, and the sausage gravy bland and room temperature. The waitress was attentive and cheerful - I just wish the food had been better.

John M.

Yelp
Really loved the restaurant. The wait staff was friendly and energetic. We got our food fast and it tasted godlike. Furthermore, they took the time to address my dad's dietary needs; moreover, the waitress made sure the food was correct. Lastly they made sure after the fact to ask how was our food was and if we wanted anything else. Would recommend this restaurant to anyone who is in the area. Will definitely come back again. Yelp
3.5 Stars if Yelp allowed it! Let me start by saying The Cinnamon Rolls are AMAZING and if I could give a separate review for them, it would absolutely be 5-STARS! Worth a stop just to try one! The rest of our food was just okay. Ribs just had sauce poured over them. The Turkey in an open face sandwich was a little dry, but the mashed potatoes and gravy were great! Service was friendly and they are wheelchair accessible.
google avatar

Stacy D.

Yelp
Since it got a new owner not to good lost a lot of good employees because of new staff the service went down hill too..
google avatar

Gina F.

Yelp
I had the stuffed French toast. It was delicious. The cinnamon cream cheese made it perfect. I have to say it is the best stuffed French toast I have ever had. The fresh fruit is really good as well. Oh and the free refill on hot cocoa The waitress was very friendly and on top of things. I will defiantly return again!

Carol B.

Yelp
This family style restaurant has a nice variety, and the service was very good. If you are a fan of bread pudding you have to try it here. They make it with their famous cinnamon rolls, and it is amazing. I definitely will stop in again!
google avatar

Elizabeth G.

Yelp
Crazy-Insanely good sweet rolls here. And sweets of all types. Definitely make a stop it is so worth it! Check out my photos and you can see the sweet roll is literally the size of my head!

Rachael A.

Yelp
Highly recommend if you're traveling in the UP! Food was great, especially for the price, and the staff were SO welcoming.

Yelp
I saw the tv report featuring Hilltop Restaurant and decided to stop for breakfast. Wide menu choices at reasonable prices. I had biscuits and sausage gravy with their famous cinnamon roll on the side. Wow! Great breakfast and the cinnamon roll exceeded my expectations! Great meal! Great, friendly service!!
google avatar

Bob M.

Yelp
The dinner roll was amazing. Everything on the salad bar seemed fresh and tasted good and the service was great. Definitely will stop again when in the area.

Sarah M.

Yelp
This place was busy even mid afternoon. That's how good it is! The portion sizes were HUGE! The service was top notch. Many items to choose from on the menu as well. On the way out we bought some homemade goods. The cinnamon buns are enormous and delicious. Four people had it for breakfast the next morning. The cookies and rice krispy treats (especially) were awesome!
google avatar

Marsha D.

Yelp
We stopped in for a late breakfast and the food was plentiful, filling and tasty. We did purchase a cinnamon roll to go and actually got four portions from it. That said - it was a bit doughy. Maybe bigger isn't always better. Will definitely return.

J F.

Yelp
Gone downhill disappointment! We have given Hilltop several chances to improve. We used to order takeout almost every Friday. It started with their coleslaw. Awful like it is spoiled. Then cold potatoes, tasteless gravy or forgotten completely on the hot beef sandwich! Their dinner and cinnamon rolls are almost dough. Yuck! We have loved Hilltop for years. Last night was the last time until new owners and or cook. Everything we ordered was under cooked and soggy, fries that were white and soggy, fish, shrimp, doughy rolls again. The chicken and dumpling soup was white and tasteless! No visible dumpings could be distinguished. Is there no supervision or quality control? New owners are not cut out to run a restaurant and have given up. Ugh what a waste of a great restaurant. :(
google avatar

Jared W.

Yelp
Could be good but wouldn't know as hours only updated on a piece of paper in the window. Closed on Monday & Tuesday.
google avatar

Cheryl G.

Yelp
We stopped at Hilltop Restaurant for lunch after visiting Canyon Falls. The portion sizes were very generous. The service was good and they friendly. The house made soup was hot and tasty. Hilltop is known for their gigantic cinnamon rolls so we wanted to try it. It's huge - glad we shared it! It was pretty good. I personally prefer a cream cheese frosting. The "icing" they used was too much and dripping off the plate. The next time I'm in the area I will probably stop for a meal but will probably pass on the cinnamon roll.

CC B.

Yelp
Just had amazing breakfast with homemade toast. They have amazing baked goods made there on site. The cinnamon roll is HUGE. A must have.
google avatar

L S.

Yelp
Quick easy breakfast, their cinnamon rolls are huge, very very huge....especially popular choice.
google avatar

Paul M.

Yelp
Food was good. Service was adequate. Masking is very loosely enforced. Most servers had masks but only 2/5 I saw wore them properly over mouth and nose and one wore here around her chin most of the time. Masking while not at your table seems to be optional for patrons. Likely will not be back here.
google avatar

Rebekah H.

Yelp
A small town restaurant with good service and good food! They even have a cute little Michigan shop. Try their sweet roll!
google avatar

Dan L.

Yelp
Food was good, service was good. Interior could use some sprucing up. Would definitely come back. Looking forward to eating the sweet roll later tonight.
google avatar

Dawn B.

Yelp
A must stop for the giant cinnamon roll that is bigger than your hand. The roll itself is nice and soft with not too sweet icing melted on top with an awesome apple center.
google avatar

Zev L.

Yelp
This review is going to be straight and to the point, if you are in the area stop by and grab a 1lb cinnamon bun! I was skeptical at first, but on a trip up to Houghton, MI we stopped by and I was made to take one of these with me for the drive. I think I tried to fit the entire bun in my mouth because it was the most delicious and moist bun I have had in a very long time. I don't know when I'll be back in the area again, but I definitely need to grab one when we are on the drive back down state!

Donna R F.

Yelp
Every time we drove buy, it was crowded. Decided to finally try to eat there but the wait was over an hour so we left. They only had one cook, and short staffed in all other areas.
google avatar

James S.

Yelp
Ate here three times in two days. Had lunch, then dinner and then breakfast. I was with a crowd of coworkers for each meal and everyone was very happy with their meals. I had the ultimate grilled cheese for lunch with soup. Both were awesome. For dinner I had the fish basket, it was okay, I wouldn't pick it again. For breakfast I had the stuffed french toast that is made from their cinnamon rolls. It was amazing. I had bread pudding which is made from the cinnamon rolls as well and it was good, I've had better. Now, I also stopped on the way out of town as did ally coworkers and we all bought multiple cinnamon rolls. These turned out to be the BEST cinnamon rolls I have ever had. I have had many cinnamon rolls from many places and these are amazing. And they are HUGE.

Laura D.

Yelp
This business has undergone a somewhat recent change in ownership. The food is decent and diners will be impressed by the size of the cinnamon rolls. Waitstaff were pleasant. The owner was an a**. I spoke with him on the phone a few days later. My bill was incorrect. He asked me for my credit card information and I apologized for having trouble reading the faded numbers, as I'd just had eye surgery. He replied, " I don't want to hear about it," and went on to find things to snarl and be additionally rude and socially inappropriate about. Btw, I'm not some little old person who whines and overshares about health issues. The guy was just simply an a**. I wouldn't spend money there again. Toni's Country Kitchen, not that much farther north in Laurium, has much better food, prices and attitude.
