Himalayan Kitchen Review - Somerville - Boston - The Infatuation

"Himalayan Kitchen is one of the best spots in Union Square, and that’s saying something considering how many stellar places there are within the half-mile radius. The momos, chef special goat curry, and chyoila, in particular, are some of our favorites. This also happens to be one of the more affordable restaurants in the area, and another reason why it should be in your regular rotation. Himalayan Kitchen is currently open for takeout and delivery." - Joel Ang

Google
Got the buttered chicken, mild, and garlic naan. Was my first time having Indian food and it was amazing. Would go back over and over again!!

Google
Good selection of entrees and attentive service. The medium level spice was actually pretty hot for mild, white people who can typically handle some spice. That didn't detract from our enjoyment of our meais.

Google
Food was good, we got the chicken tikka masala, it wasn’t super flavorful but the samosa and nan was tasty.

We have been to the restaurant a few times now for lunch and everything the food is great. There is a large seating area so we haven’t had to wait for a table once. The service has always been quick and the staff are nice and helpful. The menu is quite large and separated by what kind of protein you are looking for to eat. I have tried a few items but my favorite is the butter chicken. We also got an appetizer of chicken with some sauces to dip, sorry I cannot remember the name but it was great. The food comes out quickly and is piping hot when it’s set on the table. The serving sizes are pretty big so feel free to share with another if you go with a group or plan to take some home. Also the spice level is amazing but be warned if you ask for spicy it will be spicy which is great. Also nice is that on the weekends it looks like they may have a buffet option so you can try a few things but I haven’t been when it was available. Definitely will be back and recommend! The picture below is the chicken tender side that I can’t remember and the plate has tikka masala. Oh I almost forgot do not forget to order the garlic naan bread to go with your meal!

Google
The food was great, we had ordered “Chili Chicken” which the chef specially prepared for us which wasn’t in the menu, Dal Tadka which was outstanding, Chicken Coconut Kurma which we liked too. The rotis were very fresh right out of the tandoor. We had Garlic naan and wheat tandoori Roti which were loved. Service was great and the atmosphere overall

Google
This is the most authentic Nepalese Restaurant in U.S that I have ever eaten. Momos were delicious and they were handmade, unlike the frozen ones or made by machines lately. Taste from Tandoor made tandoori chicken delicious 😋. Lentil soup served with rice had Nepalse taste as well. This restaurant is not a fusion, I felt that I was eating in Nepal. Servers and cook were Nepalese, and the owner was very friendly. Food was not greasy. If you are in rapid city area, go nowhere. Try this amazing 👏 Nepali Restaurant.

Google
As an employee of black hills works it was an absolute pleasure and privilege to support residents to dinner this evening. The staff was inviting and warm and held the doors open upon our arrival. They were willing to go above and beyond and puree food for one individual. The food was delicious and everyone enjoyed their meal, but more so their experience. 10/10 would recommend to anyone, anytime!

Google
Undeniable flavors. Warm welcome and attentive service. Many vegetarian options, large vegetable pakoras and the chana saag was dashed with an abundance of fresh ginger and other flavorful spices. When asked if cream was in the chana saag I was kindly offered coconut milk as a replacement which was amazing. The manager is on site and attentive to all guests experiences.

Yelp
Food was excellent. Ordered takeaway and the staff were friendly and quick to prepare the meals.

Yelp
Hate to buck a trend but we weren't that impressed. We stopped in for lunch. The staff outnumbered the patrons by two-to-one. Our food was... stogy. I had their Himalayan Special platter and everything was kind of oily and not very tasty. Our experience didn't match most of the others described in the reviews. It could be the time of day or staffing at the moment. All I know is there are lots of great restaurants in Rapid City and it's unlikely that we'll be back to this one.

Yelp
We yearned for a taste of India during our South Dakota adventure. Fortunately, Rapid City offered multiple Indian dining options near our hotel. The restaurant's interior was unexpectedly traditional, a stark contrast to its outward appearance. The food was flavorful and satisfying. We indulged in naan, biryani, and butter chicken, all served swiftly. Convenient parking was also a plus

Yelp
I have been wanting to try this restaurant for quite some time. I am pleased that I finally made it, although I was quite disappointed that they do not have the buffet anymore. Our server was good, but there was a language issue but we made it work. I was asking questions and just getting yes and a nod, but not getting answers. Garlic naan was very tasty. I ordered the special chicken kabobs. They came out sizzling and the smell was overwhelming good. The lentils were also delicious. This meal was enough to feed two and still had leftovers. I will return.

Yelp
Gluten free eater. This place is a gem. I am not a celiac eater so sometimes I can tolerate a little gluten. But I do check and make sure food isn't impacted by gluten. I do have a dairy allergy so try to avoid cream, milk and a lot of cheese. Indian food has a variety of flavors and types of food. It's easy to find something that fits your diet. We ordered the pakoba (I asked our waiter and he said it was gluten free). The chicken was slightly dry but overall it was pretty good. The two dipping sauces were excellent! I ordered chicken coconut korma. This is made with coconut milk and not cream. It was pretty good. The chicken was again a bit dry but the sauce and flavor was excellent. I got a medium and it has a decent spice. Nothing overwhelming. But that is a personal preference. My husband got the goat tikki masala. He liked the flavor and really enjoyed it. I hope people try this place. It was great food!

Yelp
Don't let the subdued outside appearance fool you. Welcoming and attentive service. Nice place and very tasty food. Would definitely recommend a visit.

Yelp
Very very delicious! Family ordered Chicken Kadai, Butter Chicken, Chana Masala, and Garlic Naan. Will definitely be stopping back when in town again.
google avatar

Sandip D.

Yelp
Despite asking for medium spice level, everything was very spicy. First time I saw thin water like gravy for paneer kadhai. They messed up our order, missed garlic basil nan, also rotis were burnet out black.
google avatar

Michael D.

Yelp
Fast, friendly service in a homey atmosphere. The dishes we got were amazing! Malai Kofta and Prawn Coconut Korma. We got medium because we wanted spicy and it more than delivered! But we were still able to taste the complexity of various flavors through the spice. The garlic naan was delicious and had chunks of garlic you could actually see. Love that!

Yelp
They have the best chicken tikka masala in town, in my opinion. Whenever me and the hubby want a luxurious eat out at home, we order this. It's bomb every time

Mike N.

Yelp
Don't be intimidated if you're not familiar with Indian/Nepali cuisine....staff is friendly and helpful with the extensive menu. We absolutely enjoyed the lamb saag, chicken vindaloo and garlic naan bread--all was delicious and well spiced. The lamb saag had nice tender bite sized lamb pieces surrounded by a tasty saag, perfectly seasoned with coriander, cumin garam masala and garlic. The chicken vindaloo was similarly well made and delicious with a spicy and tangy deep red curry of red chilies and a touch of vinegar for that perfect spicy/tangy flavor. We ordered medium spice, more would have been way to hot/spicy for my taste. Each dish was plentiful enough to share family style over the perfectly cook basmati rice which was refilled once. Rice was wonderful too, each long grain not sticking to another. Also had the appetizer sampler which was actually the hit of the dinner. Stopped for overnight on long trip but if in Rapid City again I would without hesitation return to Himalayan Kitchen. Really was a beautiful culturally rich dining experience.

Yelp
This is, without doubt, the best Himalayan restaurant at which I have ever enjoyed eating, and that includes the best in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago and New York. We are in the midst of a cross-country drive from LA to New Hampshire, via Glacier National Park, and decided to try Himalayan Kitchen based on the positive reviews it has received here. It did not disappoint! If I could give them six stars, I would. For those concerned that Indian-style food is too hot for their taste, rest assured that while the dishes here are highly seasoned, the chef keeps a light touch on the hot chiles. There's lots of flavor from cardamom, cumin, fenugreek and all the other spices and herbs that make food from the Indian subcontinent so special. I particularly was pleased to see a number of goat meat dishes on the menu. That's rare today in US restaurants, but goat provides subtle differences in flavor from lamb (a close relative). Our server was friendly and helpful. The restaurant owner was present and overseeing all operations - a delightful woman! The wine list is limited but of good quality at a reaonable price (we enjoyed a Mendoza regions Malbec from Argentina for $22.) HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommended.!

John K.

Yelp
The food was delicious! We don't eat Indian/Nepalese cuisine often so I'm always kindly reminded how much flavor is packed into their dishes. We got the Chicken Tikka Masala, Chicken Mango Kids Favorite and Tandoori Chicken, and they were all good. We ordered online and scheduled to pick up when we arrived in town. The food was ready and hot when we arrived. From my quick in-and-out, it looked like a nice place to dine in. Give them a visit while you're in Rapid City!

Yelp
We were from out of town and soon for dinner. Pleasantly surprised and over joyed how good it was. Hubby asked for spicy for his meal and it hit the perfect temp.

Yelp
This was one of the best meals we had while in RS and we tried quite a few places..(silver spoon, paddy's (see other review) Vertex, and a few others and all agreed this was the best food in town..really fast, really fresh and the flavors were great. Be sure to order mild if you don't like spice because medium gets a little tingle...the naan bread was cooked fresh and was so good...give it a try if your in town or live here you'll love it.

Tyre J.

Yelp
One of the best restaurants I've eaten here living in South Dakota. Their menu items are incredible; so many options to choose from, but my favorite of all time is their chicken butter and garlic basil naan. Customer service is incredible, they're nice to all their customers and they don't take long to bring your food out. I highly recommend eating there for lunch and dinner.

Yelp
Definitely the best Nepalese food in Rapid city, according to the award on their table at the cashier. Sorry, I forgot to take pictures of the rest of the food. Ordered the onion kulcha, malai kofta, dal and paneer butter masala. The medium spicy had a kick to it, which was perfect! And definitely delicious food! I would like to be back to try the other items on the menu one more time before we leave the city! It's hard to find such authentic Nepalese cuisine.

Yelp
Surprised to find a good nepalese food here in Rapid City SD. Service is good. Food is yummy. Mild space a bit too mild for us, but the taste and flavors were awesome. Reminiscent of my travels out of country. The vegetable samosa is a must try! I could've eaten 5 of those, easy! The wrapper, sauce and filling was just perfect. I love how i could taste nepal in the food served! It was awesome. Plenty of parking. No buffet on dinner.
google avatar

Justin G.

Yelp
When I was visiting Rapid City, I saw a billboard for its local Indian restaurant. I saw that it got good reviews on Yelp, so I decided to try it out for myself. I ordered two vegetable samosas. They were tasty. For my main course, I ordered the chicken vindaloo with a medium spice. It was chicken thigh meat prepared with tomatoes, potatoes, and onions in a tomato-curry sauce. It was very spicy for medium, but it did have lots of flavor. It was a robust curry, but vindaloos tend to be more potent than tikka masala and butter chicken. I was shocked to find a good Indian restaurant in South Dakota, and this was a pleasant surprise.

Yelp
When we were in the Mount Rushmore area on a road trip, Yelp was our best resource to find the best restaurants in the area, and Himalayan food was on the menu. I wanted to try a new different cuisine and this looked great! Great experience that it has me craving Himalayan food now. The cuisine is very similar to Indian good, dull of flavors. Naan bread is necessary with all the sauce to dip in. Just be careful if you order spicy, it really is spicy. Highly satisfied with this meal.

Lorre B.

Yelp
Food was very good. Comfortable ambiance. Service was great - very attentive. Chicken tiki Marsala and garlic naan was delicious.

Yelp
Great service, great food. Very cute restaurant with a nice ambiance inside. The bathrooms were extremely small, but they get the job done. Food was delicious! Will be back and I think everyone should eat here.

Paul E.

Yelp
Only had chicken tikka masala and garlic naan take out, however both were very good. The tikka masala was flavorful and perfectly spicy. The chicken was tender. The naan was moist and loaded with garlic. The take out containers were well packed (no leaks) and the food was piping hot. Restaurant was clean and the service was friendly. Great dining experience all around.

Winda B.

Yelp
Mouth watering lamb rogan , delicious butter chicken and chicken tandoori. We also order garlic nun and paneer pakora all food are great and well seasoned. Please don't order very hot one like l did . It was great for me but if you don't like hot or spicy order mild . All food served with basmati rice. I can't believed it I found great Nepal / Indian restaurant in Rapid city South Dakota .

Yelp
This is my favorite place to eat in Rapid City. The people that work here are so nice, service is great, and the food is awesome. My favorite thing to order is the Mango Chicken. Give it a try!

Yelp
This place is amazing. Good ambience, good hospitality, good food. And this is coming from a picky Nepali person, lol! I recommend this place if you guys are looking for Nepalese food in Rapid City. They won't disappoint you.

Yelp
Our family favorites are the prawn coconut korma, papad chicken padoka, the chai tea, and the Mango Lassi. Service is great, and the atmosphere is calm. Plenty of parking and easy to get to from down town. Just up Mt. Rushmore road.

Yelp
Though I've never even to India, I've lived in some major metropolitan areas around this country which have amazing Indian comunities and as such, great neighborhood Indian restaurants making every different regional Indian cuisine from the eastern and western borders to the Goan peninsula. It varies widely and I love it all. Never did I think I would find some of the best Himalayan food I've ever had in my life in Rapid City - but I have, and I highly recommend getting yourself over there and filling your belly with some of the best food in town, and at very reasonable prices. It may seem a bit pricey but each dish feeds at least two people, three if you're not a glutton like me ;). You can get any dish made from mild to spicy but I think it all sings at medium heat. Favorites: Vegetable pakoras ( eat 'em hot and preferably while dining in as they don't travel that well, or figure out a way to hot bake them back to crisp if you take them home). They're sensational and can be a meal unto themselves. Butter chicken- nothing like it sounds. gorgeous, rich, tender chcicken in a creamy tomato based curry. Bloody amazing Prawn saag- perfectly cooked and good sized shrimp in mildly spicy spinach with curry, cardamom and other seasonings. Sensational. Papadums crispy and delightful served with mint and/or mango chutney are a great starter. Garlic naan perfect. I've only been twice and on very cold nights -(which makes their food doubly hearty, warming and satisfying) - and I will be back regularly now that we know we'll be in RC for at least a year or so, to work our way through the menu which I'm sure is filled with many yet undiscovered treasures. I was not a fan of the lamb curry only because the lamb was a bit tough, though the sauce was gorgeous. I'll give it another go next time. Enjoy!!!

Jill M.

Yelp
Unexpectedly delicious Indian and Nepali food! The service was fantastic, the prices were more than reasonable for the amount of food we got, and we asked for spicy food and actually got spicy! :) I had the mushroom mutter and my husband had lamb curry. The rice was perfect and so was the naan! I wish we were going to be in town longer so that we could try more of the dishes. Yum!
google avatar

John B.

Yelp
Best Indian food I've ever had - and I'm from a real city. Tandoori chicken superb. Samosas superb. Everything else excellent. They need better beer - only had Taj Mahal, Bud (I think?) and Fat Tire. I drank Fat Tire. "Mild plus" was pretty hot. Not a white guy level of mild. I thought I liked things fairly spicy but this was plenty spicy for me - as spicy as I'd want it. Would definitely eat here again.
google avatar

Linnea W.

Yelp
Wow this place is great! Rapid City is seriously lacking in dining choices. After a couple of days there I was doubting I'd ever find anything beyond burgers and pizza. Whatever your hesitation may be if you even have one toss it aside and eat here. I enjoy Indian food and have eaten Indian cuisine at some really fantastic and some not so fantastic places throughout the US so imagine my surprise when not only did the food look good it tasted good too. We had the chicken tikka masala and the lamb tikka masala (with added spice). Both were delicious. One of the better Indian restaurants we've eaten at. To top it off the place was really clean and our waitress was very pleasant. If I'm in the area again I'm not eating anywhere else.
google avatar

Michael E.

Yelp
Fantastic food and wonderful service. Very tasty and fresh! Do not be intimidated to eat here if YOU do not have much experience with Indian or Himalayan dishes. The owner and staff will guide you in the right direction. It's really flavorful and very, very good. So lucky to have found this gem in Rapid City. Eat here!!! You'll have no regrets!
google avatar

Anthony V.

Yelp
When you first walk inside you see a small award/ placard that says "Best in rapid 2021". In short, the sign doesn't lie. The place had a warm cozy atmosphere that hits you when you first walk in. The staff and the service was inviting and attentive. The food, served family style, was a nice balance of spicy and flavorful. I highly recommend getting something saucy like butter chicken to go with their rice and side of their freshly baked naan bread which is to die for. Don't sleep on it, if this is your first time trying this type of food, do it, do it now.
google avatar

Lauren T.

Yelp
We thought we'd give this place a shot after staying in the area for one night on our road trip to Washington. It got great reviews so we figured it could be yummy! Yelp has yet to steer us wrong because this place was amazing! Fast and friendly service and the portions are big! As a vegetarian I got the veggie curry that was SUPER tasty, my dad got the tandoori chicken, and an order of naan for the table. We probably could have gone without the naan since both dishes came with rice PLUS the chicken came with lentils. Everything was beyond tasty and well seasoned. Plus, free parking. Who would've known SoDak would have great Himalayan food!! Highly recommend this place!!
google avatar

Brittany V.

Yelp
Naan was burnt and paneer was rubbery and inedible, they wouldn't let me swap for something else. We also both asked for the spiciest level in our dishes and it was bland and watered down tasting. Told us we'd have to still pay for it and pay for another entree if I wanted a different option. Will never be going back.

Molly G.

Yelp
Love this place so much. Consistently good, always on time (we prefer ordering for pickup) and the food is outstanding!
google avatar

Lance T.

Yelp
The food was very tasty. Service was great. I can tell they are exceptionally understaffed but worked hard to make sure everyone was taken care of. Loved the lamb Tikka masala and rhe butter chicken. The portions are spot on. Great people running it.

Glenn B.

Yelp
Amazing food, service and atmosphere. The cheese naan bread was lovely. I had the manager's favorite which was spinach with curry and prawns with rice. I will definitely be back. My only suggestion is that they offer a lunch menu with smaller portions.

Cassandra S.

Yelp
The food is really good and the staff are super nice, I wish I could eat the garlic naan everyday
google avatar

Yelp
We love Indian food and this place has amazing food and exceptional service. We love coming here for dine in and take out!
google avatar

Rayanne W.

Yelp
They make the BEST veggie samosas I've ever had. The Chicken Tikka Masala and Biryani were also great. Best Indian option in Rapid City!
google avatar

Liz S.

Yelp
We stumbled into Himalayan Kitchen Cuisine after a long day jeeping in the Black Hills of South Dakota. When we stopped for gas, we looked up and there it was, this Indian restaurant. Yippee. We went in, ordered Indian beer and Ora one of everything on the menu. Omg! So very delicious. Everything!! We had leftovers for 2-days. Thank you so much. We enjoyed every morsel We'll definitely be back
google avatar

Bunny B.

Yelp
The food is amazing! We went to South Dakota to travel and ate there once and have been missing the taste ever since. We went to lots of Napel and india restaurants in the Bay Area too but none of them are even close. For example the tandoori chicken, here uses a smaller chicken, super tender and flavorful, we enjoyed it eating without any sauce. Normal Indian restaurants have tat chicken so big and not much flavor. Not to mention a few other dishes: you have to try the nann basket with the cherry coconut filling one. Too good.
google avatar

Mark C.

Yelp
This the best Indian food we've had in years. Hands down. My family of five was in Rapid City to visit the parks. We needed some takeout and decided to try out Himalayan. We had the Chicken Tikka Masala, Lamb Vindaloo, Lamb Samosa, Butter Chicken, and Naan. All were incredible. We're only here for three days, but are already thinking of getting it again!

Yelp
Excellent Buffet with Delicious Food ! We really enjoyed the Nepalese food ! Super friendly owner and staff ! Very accommodating to requests !

Casey L.

Yelp
I had the Coconut Cashew Paneer Korma which was absolutely delicious.I have been vegetarian for over fifty years and have no tolerance for any shared grill cooking or contamination. So after interrogating the server, who continued to smile and repeat " 100% guaranteed" I can only say "So true".The service was great, the staff so friendly.Everything was perfect,an oasis on the road.Wonderful Naan,my pal had Dal Makhini,I ordered Samosa to go.Good menu.

Yamini S.

Yelp
We had been driving down from Montana for 4 hours, were hungry and were searching for an Indian restaurant. We picked this one as it had 4.3 star ratings. We decided o have a thali (it's a plate with an assortment of menu items) and asked the lady serving us what would we get? She told us that we would get two curries, 1 roti, rice, poppadam and 1 dessert. Then she asked us if we would like 1 or 2 roti - my husband asked for two assuming that since it is included, she was asking how many. Then when it was time to pay at the counter the person says roti is NOT included in the thali meal! He calls the lady who was serving us and she denies having said roti was included! Now he says it was a miscommunication and apologizes but still insists that she did NOT say roti was included. What ever happened to "Customer is always right"? He went ahead and charged us for the rotis.....any other place would NOT have charged for the rotis! The whole meal was mediocre at best and we paid $62.50 - the worst experience and service ever!

Yelp
Good food little expensive got some rice pudding to go. They want 30 words so blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah.

Lucy W.

Yelp
Delicious food and amazing customer service! The food was very authentic, flavorful, and spicy! I have a high spice tolerance, and the hottest spice level was the perfect level, while my family has a fair tolerance and sniffled and sweat a lot at medium spice. You know it's authentic when the spice level scales not by what "white people" consider spicy. My dad expressed how the food was much hotter as expected when the waiter came by to check on us, and the waiter then brought out raita to help him out with the spice. The server was so thoughtful for that and brought it out without asking! The food was amazing and the waiters are so compassionate. One of the best restaurant experiences I've ever had.
