9 Flavorful Indian and South Asian Restaurants in Denver - Eater Denver

"Best bets on the extensive menu at this comfy-casual Berkeley spot include pakora of any kind — veggie, chicken, or calamari — as well as the coconut-based dhaniya curry with cashew and cilantro and the tangy-creamy paneer makhni. A full bar turns out fun cocktails like the Cinnamon Girl featuring rum and mango lassi." - Ruth Tobias

Google
This was our first time at this cuisine and I gotta say, one of the best Indian Cuisines I’ve had ever. The owner is very kind and the staff is very friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. The food was delicious, the flavor and spices were excellent and being able to taste all the ingredients put together makes this place my highlight in my Denver trip. I definitely recommend this place to anyone that wants to try Indian cuisine. You won’t be disappointed.

Google
The food here was absolutely delicious! We had a mango lassi to drink, vindaloo, massala, and sag. All were delicious. You are able to pick your level of spiciness so you don’t have to worry about it being too mild or too hot. The customer service was excellent. Their restrooms (at least the ladies restroom) were clean.

Google
The food was cold and grizzly fatty all over the chicken. All the food was overpriced. The food was ready in five minutes you would think for the price that you’re paying for it would actually be cooked freshly I wanted the old food. I could’ve come to their buffet, but based off the chicken being as gross as it was, you could tell Old food. I spent over $35 on two pieces of bread and one appetizer. It was my choice to eat here and I thought based off the reviews it would be worth a try but guys don’t waste your money. I asked for the rice to be divided and they couldn’t do that for me trying to blame it on me for not being loud enough to ask

Google
A cute little place we grabbed early dinner at. Food was fresh and tasty, but unfortunately too spicy. We ordered mild and medium and it was HOT! full of flavor though!

Checked this little place out a few days ago on my travels and decided to give it a whirl. Parking could be tough if the area is busy. It's a wait to be seated kind of place with table service, and you pay your server when done. The food here was excellent. It had great flavor. I ordered a mango Lassi to drink, and I couldn't stop drinking it because it was so tasty. I ordered lamb kadai, and it was excellent! The curry broth was not too thick. The consistency was perfect. I also ordered it on the #4 level of spicy hot, and it was perfect. If your in the area, stop in and give this great little place a shot. 2 thumbs up!

Google
We have been here twice now and both times we were treated with superb service. The food was excellent and the drinks were yummy. The lunch special 'tika' can't be missed. Definitely a gem!

Yelp
Everything we ordered was delicious. Service was fast and attentive and prices were very reasonable. A new go to spot for Indian food in Denver!

Yelp
Food is excellent. Drinks are very well priced, nothing more than $9! The atmosphere and service was also excellent, not too loud and always attentive. The heat scale is very forgiving. We did medium and medium hot and could have definitely upped the ante for both, which is encouraging. They have a patio outside for when the weather is nice. Give it try. You don't be disappointed.

Yelp
Wow! Highly recommend! Feels like a hidden gem, we were one of only two tables on Saturday night and I was blown away. Food was quick and delicious. Staff was super friendly and let us know they are opening up a new spot to be called Spice Kitchen, solely for takeout orders, in the downtown area. I felt well taken care of by the staff. Very relaxed environment and was able to enjoy my meal with my husband and hear each other in conversation. So much better than the competition around the corner Can't wait to come back and try more! Food was 11/10! If I could paint a picture, I felt like Remy in Ratatouille with all of the flavors bursting and swirling. This place is IT!!!

Yelp
Very spacious, nicely decorated, and super clean. The staff were all very kind. Their menu was diverse with something for everyone. The food was delicious.

Yelp
Poor quality food, the meat was fatty covered in plenty of spice. Everything is way too over spiced for not being fresh food. Two complete entrées were made and ready to go in less than five minutes. I get it. It's a business but when you're spending that kind of money, you expect fresh food. I was highly disappointed after using Yelp to find the best Indian food around just makes you think that people are paid to review because something couldn't have been that bad and had so many positive reviews. I have been eating Indian food since I was six and absolutely love it, but they surely made me think twice about continuing to eat it. This place is a waste of money.

Amanda W.

Yelp
This place is so amazing! My husband and I frequent it as we live in the area. Their mango chutney is to die for- also make great cocktails! I love their mojitos. We've also become addicted to their naan- we've stopped going to other establishments because their naan is that worth it. (We've ordered 6 flavors & all amazing!) we also love the service here- they go above and beyond and make us feel special. Quick, attentive, and friendly :)

Yelp
All around pleasant experience, good for dates, family, friends. Good lighting, comfortable decor, and friendly and attentive service. All good was tasty, pakora was nice and crunchy but not oily and samosa's were nice and crisp without being over cooked. We'll be back!

Yaury H.

Yelp
I've eaten this food all over the world and I thought because they charge so much that it was just banging, but the quality of food for the price is crazy. I asked for extra rice, which I paid for I didn't get. I asked for two different types of non-which I didn't get and their best answer really didn't matter because I spent so much on it already and then to top it off. The chicken in my food wasn't good. It was all grizzly. I don't know how this place has such reviews, but I wouldn't recommend anyone to eat here.

Christian S.

Yelp
This place is AWESOME! My wife and I cannot get enough of Himalayan Spice. We typically order take-out and the food is always ready for pickup in 15 minutes, right when they say it'll be ready. We're vegetarians so we usually get sweet potato, paneer, or garbanzos, but it's always incredible. Tikka masala, saag, korma, whatever! Can't recommend this place enough!

Yelp
This is one of our favorite places to grab drinks & food before a show at The Oriental. The food here is fantastic. Everything I have ordered here has been delicious. The Masala is probably my favorite dish. But, I have really enjoyed the Saag, Garlic Cheese Naan & Vegetable Samosas as well. The mint sauce that comes with the samosas is stellar. These guys also make pretty spectacular cocktails. The mule with white whiskey was wonderful. They have several, local craft beers on tap as well as more traditional Indian beers in bottles. This is Tennyson, so parking is always going to be challenging. Just plan ahead, wear your walking shoes and be prepared to walk a block or two.

Yelp
Went here for the first time. Excellent ambience inside. Very different from the other restaurant that were here originally . We ordered the shrimp vindaloo, samosas, vegetable korma and naan. Food was really tasty even though I asked for it to be mild. Normally when you ask for mild Indian food the flavors don't come out the same. In this case, food tasted fresh and delicious, , portions were very decent and we will definitely return. Really nice addition to Tennyson Street.

Yelp
I discovered the Himalayan Spice Indian restaurant on a random Yelp search prior to arrival. It was a 4.8 star rating and close enough to a perfect score. Needless to say that I wanted to try this place. I placed a reservation prior to arrival, thinking that it would be busy. After arriving at the airport and taking an Uber to get to the restaurant, I found out that the restaurant was virtually empty with only 2 tables occupied on a Thursday morning. I arrived here around 11:35am. The ambiance was good and quiet. I decided to choose a spot that was a booth and near the entrance. Once I checked in on the Yelp app, I was given a 10% off offer from my check. I showed this to the server and he agreed I can used it. I probably spent about an hour here, ordering a bit more than I'm used to. I eventually boxed up the rest of what I couldn't finish and ended up having it for lunch the next day after microwaving it in the hotel room prior to check out. I ordered the lamb vindaloo, garlic cheese naan, tandoori chicken, and the tandoori chicken wings. I decided to have water for the drink. As far as I know, I boxed up part of the garlic cheese naan and the entire portion of the tandoori chicken for lunch the next day. For the most part though, the experience here at the Himalayan Spice Indian restaurant was nice and casual. While it wasn't the best, it was certainly high and great expectations were already given. Food was delicious of course, but not as 5 stars as many people claim. Still delicious though. The overall experience here at the Himalayan Spice Indian restaurant - Denver was good and definitely a must do. While the prices here were typical of many Indian restaurants that I've frequented over the years, it's the quality and the flavors that are most important in this instance. I enjoyed the tandoori chicken wings first before the basmati rice with the lamb vindaloo arrived. I'm not sure but the tandoori chicken wings tasted like regular chicken wings with barbecue sauce (and other seasonings) on it. It was delicious but that's how I viewed it. The lamb vindaloo was good as I had it with the basmati rice and the garlic naan. It was a perfect mixture of sinful goodness, comfort food, and very good deliciousness that could not be compared. While it was awesome and a welcome respite after 7 hr worth of flights on 2 aircraft, it was wonderful to see be here and to sample top notch Indian cuisine in the heart of Denver, Colorado. While it was certainly good and delicious, I'm not sure if it was the best but it was certainly above average for sure. Although having a nice almost empty restaurant to enjoy the ambiance does help also, but the food itself wasn't 5*. 4.5 sure. While Yelp doesn't have a half point rating system just yet, Its tough to give them a 4.0 or a 5.0 star, when it's in between that - at least for my experience. If you're looking for an Indian restaurant in Denver, consider coming here to the Himalayan Spice Indian restaurant. It's very good and the service was friendly. Himalayan Spice Indian restaurant is located at 1234 Thyssen Street in metro Denver, Colorado. They accept major credit cards as well as cash. As far as parking goes, there was limited parking here for the merchants here. Probably around maybe 15 or so parking stalls. Then there's street parking wherever you can find it in the local area nearby. I came by Uber from the airport that day, so there's that service if you decide on coming, although the prices from the airport for Uber was a little bit higher than I expected but maybe it's probably because of the Denver international airport. If you love public transportation, consider which routes are best for your situation and plan accordingly. Best bet is to head over to the Denver area public transportation website and see which routes are best suited for your trip here to Himalayan Spice Indian restaurant. The experience was enjoyable and it was nice to be not dining in a loud and busy restaurant. Need that down time to decompress from traveling. 4.5 stars for the overall experience. 4.0 stars for the food and service. 5.0 stars for the ambiance. 3.0 stars for the prices. Support local! B+

Yelp
Visited for the first time a couple days ago and found everything to be quite good. We had entrees of lamb Rogan and a veggie korma and a veggie appetizer. Everything was fine. The restaurant was very clean and nicely decorated. They do serve alcohol and had a few Indian beers on the menu. Definitely recommended.

Yelp
We first did a take out order from this place some daal fry and rice. We were blown away by the taste and decided to dine in! We got seated immediately. We ordered 4 Thalis and some lassis. The management offered us a cup of tea on the house. That was a very nice gesture of them. The food did come out late but mind you the taste was on point. The main dish came with rice, naan, salad, a desert, and some pickle. Every main dish from Himalayan style chicken curry to saag corn was so so delicious and flavorful. The portion was Huge. We had so much leftovers. We should have ordered momos! Missed it. The ambiance is pretty decent with pictures of some famous landmarks of Nepal. The servers and management was very courteous and super hospitable to us! Give it a try, the food won't disappoint you!
google avatar

Vic M.

Yelp
Service was excellent by a caring team. The samosas were excellent. The Chicken Mango Curry was wonderful. The Dhania was fantastic. The alcohol drinks were priced fairly with lots of choices. We'll be back.
google avatar

Yelp
Delicious! I ordered delivery. When I got my food, it was piping hot. Which was both amazing and appreciated. Usually the food I get ordered ends up being slightly warm. And that's with answering the door right away. This place is great. I will definitely be a regular.
google avatar

Stacey M.

Yelp
The Samosas were literally the best I've ever had in my life! No really. They were ridiculous! Like true gluttons, we went back the very next day and ordered them again for takeout. I gave one to my brother and he just booked a flight back to Denver and is already asking me where the restaurant is. The food was great, but sometimes when I'm minding my business walking through the generic streets of Los Angeles, I hear those soft, sweet, delicate, flavorful samosas calling my name. I may actually ask my brother to freeze some and bring them back for me.
google avatar

Jessica M.

Yelp
This place is soooo good! The owner is so kind and they make everything from scratch. Also great and easy parking for this area. The Samsoma Cha app is the best spin with yogurt and sweet topping. Seriously check this place out. Eat in, the beer selection is great!

Yelp
Great tasting Indian food in the heart of Berkeley, Denver Met friends here for dinner here on a weeknight. There was not a wait, but after tasting the food there should have been! Please come visit or order takeout, I highly recommend it. The staff were really attentive and provided great service. The atmosphere is clean and welcoming and also has ample outdoor seating. The food itself is delicious. We ordered a few curry chicken dishes, a veggie dish, garlic naan and rice. Between the 4 of us we could not finish the portions they gave us, so really great value for the money. I would recommend coming to visit!
google avatar

Yelp
If you're aware of my established rules on Yelp, then as an Indian man, I cannot give 5 stars to any Indian/South Asian restaurant as only my mother's cooking is 5 stars! Anyway, was in the area for the night and suggested to friends that we check out Himalayan Spice of what seemed well-reviewed. My friends (people who usually do not eat Indian food) were impressed. I was satisfied as well. Got the paneer tikka masala along with garlic naan. All tasted quite good and hit the spot especially in trying to find a restaurant walking distance to where the rest of our night would be. Staff was kind. Ultimately I think anyone will be very happy with the experience at Himalayan Spice, however the "spice" level is still tailored to the American tastebuds as opposed to the Himalayan haha.
google avatar

Jim H.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious food. The Chicken Tikka Masala was fantastic. Everything was very fresh. Service was excellent. Clean and comfortable atmosphere. Can't wait to go back.
google avatar

Deborah M.

Yelp
The food was yummy but I was a bit surprised that there was no lunch special- pretty pricey and ok service.
google avatar

Richard H.

Yelp
Not only was the food very good, our waiter was super sweet with our 1 year old Grand daughter who loves mango lassis. He gave it to her on the house.
google avatar

Julia L.

Yelp
Amazing fresh naan. Kiddo has the butter chicken and fell in love. Also the mango yogurt drink was lovely. Place was clean and comfortable.

Yelp
We were hyped for this take out dinner -- 5 star Indian food near our house? Incredible! Unfortunately, this meal was really disappointing. All of the meats were bland -- from bland chicken, to super chewy goat and lamb, these meats were far from fall off the bone. The Rogan Josh just didn't look or taste right, it had sort of clumps in it. The chicken tikka Masala was the star, but even that was blander than average. I keep hunting for another denver Indian spot in the same tier as "Mehaks India Aroma" but haven't found it. I hate to give a negative rating to a cute local spot with friendly staff, but I do hope this restaurant can level up.

Yelp
My wife and I were craving some tasty Indian cuisine and decided to try Himalayan Spice for the first time. We had an excellent meal and were blown away by the flavor of the dishes. Definitely a go to spot! We chose Samosa for our appetizer - 2 are included to the order and it comes with mint and tamarind chutney. These were hot and fresh and stuffed with delicious curried potatoes and peas. They were very good and had a spicy seasoning on top. For entrees we chose chicken masala and mushroom masala. The dishes are served in a large bowl and come with rice on the side. We also ordered some naan to scoop up all the incredible sauce. We both loved the mushroom dish and the spice level was perfect (medium hot). This was an all around good meal and service was great. This is a great casual lunch or dinner spot. The prices are reasonable and the portions are huge. We definitely had enough for leftovers. The medium hot was pretty spicy so definitely stick to mild if you can't handle the heat. We can't wait to go back and try some other dishes!

Yelp
The place is very ethnic, staff is friendly and the food is delicious. I've had a lot of Indian and Nepali food. This was good.

Yelp
We had a fantastic takeout meal from Himalayan Spice! The dishes we tried were the chicken Biryani, chicken Vindaloo, Tikka Masala, and the Momo's. Everything was absolutely fantastic! I have an allergy to Cilantro so when we called in, we asked if they could double check all the items we were ordering were cilantro free and they ran it by the kitchen. I didn't know how busy they were until we picked up our order, but considering the amount of people dining in, I am still impressed that the hostess took the time to ask the kitchen for each item, call me back and double check that they had verified while making the food that each item was allergy safe. When we picked up the order, each item had a little allergy warning marked on the container in marker and the hostess had double checked. Our food was excellent and everything was cooked perfectly. I also love that the portions were great sizes, something that is harder and harder to find when ordering takeout. We can't wait to try Himilayan Spice again, and hopefully get to dine in!
google avatar

Kat K.

Yelp
I love your wonderful curry! The tomatoes taste amazing and the chicken is perfectly cooked! The rice looks as good as it tastes and the sweet naans have just the right texture and flavor. And my mango lassi is the perfect sweet to top my meal off! Your restaurant is epic!
google avatar

Mj K.

Yelp
I love this restaurant. I always recommend it to people who ask me for an Indian food place in Denver! The food is so flavorful, fresh and delicious--the spicy is actually very spicy. The service is always friendly and quick!

Yelp
I'm finding a new love for Indian, Himalayan and Nepali Cuisine! Everything we had was delicious, seriously!! My favorite dish was the chef special chicken, packed full of flavor.... it took everything not to pick up the bowl and slurp what was left of the sauce! And my favorite appetizer, although they were all very delicious, was the Chicken C MoMo Dumplings!! Also they have a unique selection of different tandoori naan bread. My favorite was the truffle... But they were all delicious! I can't wait to come back and try more of this delicious menu! What we ordered: Chef's special chicken curry C MoMo - appetizer- chicken Gobi Manchurian - appetizer Paneer chili - appetizer Saag with paneer Tandoori shrimp Tandoori mixed- chicken tikka, chicken on the bone, shrimp, and salmon Sun-dried tomato and truffle naan I forgot the name of the cocktail but just think of it as a boozy iced chai tea! Amazing!!

Yelp
I'm not above repeatedly suggesting to my friends that we order Indian food. And when that doesn't work out, I'm also not above ordering Indian alone, as if I was eating with a bunch of friends. This is how I ended up ordering copious quantities of food from Himalayan Spice...twice in one week. This place is AMAZING. My first order I got the vegetarian family meal with an added lamb curry. (Honestly, the family meals are an amazing deal and absolutely fantastic variety). My second order I got some lunch specials; if you need some work from home joy, this may be the closest thing to it. Yum. Here's what I sampled in total: Dal Tadka, Palak Paneer, Aloo Gobi, Lamb Madras, Chicken Korma, Paneer Makhni, and Baigan Bharta. Every single dish was fantastic. Great complex flavors, spot on textures. The lamb was melt in your mouth, the chicken was off the bone perfectly tender (not dry hard chunks of chicken breast). The Dal wasn't too runny (pet peeve of mine). Even the Aloo Gobi, which isn't usual a go-to dish of mine was awesome. I would say the 'medium' to 'medium/high' heat on my first order was a bit too much for me, so I went mild thereafter. I also had veggie pakoras (excellent! chutneys included!) and some of the most delightful garlicky garlic naan. The kheer was a nice treat to end on. (FYI it does seem to include some mango which makes it a little different in terms of texture and flavor). Everything was packaged expertly, and neatly organized in a paper bag. Score. I couldn't justify ordering any more food alone, (at least this week), but honestly I cannot wait to try some of the other Nepali offerings (those momos for starters....). This is definitely my new FAVORITE place. The search is over!
google avatar

Marielle W.

Yelp
Not too busy, really kind service too. We got tikka masala and one other tasting appetizer that's was delicious!!! Cute and casual restaurant, fully recommend!!
google avatar

Yelp
The people who own and run this restaurant, or from Nepal, and having spent three weeks in Nepal myself, I can tell you the food is wonderful and very authentic. There is a nice outdoor patio, and comfortable indoor seating for a group or a smaller party. Highly recommend this place!
google avatar

Sydney F.

Yelp
When we walked in, there were about 3 tables being served. My boyfriend ordered a beer, which was flat- but they stated they had just switched over the keg and gave him a new beer right away. The service was a little slow for how idle the restaurant was. Once we ordered, the food did come out quickly. We each ordered our food at level 3 (medium-hot), which was the perfect amount of spice. We ordered the veggie samosas to start, which were flaky and decent sized. We also ordered the chicken vindaloo, palak paneer, butter naan, and garlic cheese naan (sooooo good). The vindaloo had a lot of chicken, which isn't always the case! Staff was friendly and they graciously honored the 10% off coupon available on Yelp at check out when individual "checks-in."
google avatar

Mia L.

Yelp
I had an amazing experience at the Indian restaurant. I asked for the food to be extra spicy and they delivered! The flavors were so rich and delicious. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone who is looking for a flavorful and spicy Indian meal.
google avatar

Emily C.

Yelp
Such a great addition to the awesome restaurant line up on Tennyson St! I placed a lunch order for take out and went with the paneer makhni/makhani lunch special, which came with rice, naan, and a choice of soup or salad. The portion was not huge, with only about 5 pieces of paneer, but was relatively fair for the price ($9.99 + 10% off with a Yelp check-in!). The curry was probably the best makhani I have had in Denver so far... so incredibly creamy and delicious, with the perfect kick of spice! Himalayan Spice is in the process of getting its liquor license and is so excited to start serving some boozy drinks. The staff working when I picked up my order were all so friendly, welcoming, and passionate about creating a positive dining experience for guests. I also really liked looking at the nature pictures hanging on the walls while I waited!

Yelp
This is my 2nd time here. I visited last summer when capacity restrictions were still happening. I started with a Mango Lassi, a sweet yogurt based drink. It can be made hot or salty. My appetizer was Gobi Manchrian (cauliflower florets sauteed in garlic and a medium hot spicy sauce. For my entree, I had Lamb Vindaloo (Indian hot) with basmati rice, Raita ( creamy side with cucumber, carrots and yogurt) and Peshawari Naan (flatbread stuffed with dried coconut, cashews, maraschino cherries & raisins). I finished with Kheer, Indian rice pudding. I couldn't finish the Vindaloo, so I got a take home container. It was the compostable version. The had a sign on the doors that their current hours are 4:30pm-10:30pm. Probably staffing issues. They have a full bar with wine, cocktails, beer. They have a fenced in patio facing north.

Jenny L.

Yelp
Highly recommend! The food is so amazing, and everyone who works there is so kind. The chaat samosas were fantastic, we will definitely be back.

Yelp
Update: Thank you, Ganesh. I emailed and look forward to hearing from you. 2.5 stars. I hate giving this place a negative review, but the food was inedible. I enjoy spicy foods, but this was so spicy that my palms sweat just thinking about it. The curries gave my dining companion and I upset stomachs. We could not taste the food -- just the heat of the chilis. My face was literally sweating while struggling to eat this meal. I believe I ordered one of the curries to be "hot" (4/5) -- NOT "Indian hot" (5/5). However, the other 2 were "medium hot" (3/5) so I thought it would be okay. Spoiler: none of the three curries were edible. This is such a bummer, especially since I hate wasting food and we ordered a lot (the vegetarian family package) planning to have leftovers.

Mariah G.

Yelp
Really great spot! Great portion sizes and everything was very delicious! The garlic naan was perfectly fluffy yet crispy and the chicken tikka masala was fantastic too. Lovely atmosphere to dine in as well and friendly employees.

Dakota S.

Yelp
The food was incredible!! Best Indian we've had so far in the area. Owners were very kind and attentive. Place is cute inside, very comfortable. 10/10 would recommend!
google avatar

Heather C.

Yelp
Best Indian food in Denver. Always super fresh, spicy and still flavorful. Never leave with a stomach ache, which can happen with some of the other places. My go to is mixed veggie korma with butter naan. Naan is super flaky and buttery. Highly recommend.
google avatar

Hannah K.

Yelp
Welcome to Tennyson street! We used to drive for our Indian food fix but now it's right in our neighborhood and walking distance. The menu is LARGE so there truly is something for everyone. Good size portions you could share or take home for great leftovers. We met the owners and they were so kind! Gave us some take out menus with coupons. Will definitely be back to support another delicious local business!
google avatar

Cisko R.

Yelp
It's mid Indian food the garlic cheesy nam is what had me in my food most of the time, they don't put utensils on to go orders.

Jen E.

Yelp
Himalayan Spice is hands down the best Nepalese cuisine in Denver! Try their Raksi white whiskey cocktails. Manoj & Adir are awesome!

Yelp
Had been with family here a few days back. Ordered takeout initially but then wife changed her mind and we converted it to a dine-in. There weren't as many people and so were immediately seated. Staff was very friendly and the service was very good. The ambience was nice with decent lighting and soft music playing in the background. We ordered the Himalayan Spice chicken with Naan (it comes with rice) and Chicken Biryani. The gravy was finger licking good with good amount of boneless chicken pieces in it. Mouth was bursting with flavors. Naan was soft and tasted good too. The chicken biryani served with raita was also tasting very delicious. Decent amount of chicken with all the flavours hitting just the right spot. We loved all that was served and wouldn't mind returning to explore other dishes. Keep up the good work.

Alice L.

Yelp
Had a 44th birthday celebration at Himalayan Spice last night. Both the staff and the food were wonderful.

Yelp
Food was great! Had the butter chicken with some coconut naan! Had the perfect amount of spice and the food was smooth! Great customer service. Listen to their recommendations!!
