Himitsu Teriyaki Review - Maple Leaf - Seattle - The Infatuation

"This Japanese spot in Maple Leaf serves teriyaki and milkshakes—a combination that seems meant to be. Himitsu succeeds at fried snacks like poppable gyoza and pork eggrolls, but the teriyaki leaves a lot to be desired. Their chicken is almost brittle from being pounded out too thin, the salad dressing has a melted butter-like oiliness that doesn’t coat the iceberg very well, and their homemade teriyaki sauce is gritty. The milkshakes, however, are better than some scoop shops in town, so if you’re in the neighborhood craving something sweet, frozen, and sippable, it’s your best option. Spun with mix-ins like Nutella or crushed Butterfingers, they’re thick, frosty, and include a softball-sized mound of ice cream on top. Just in case the 16-ounce cup wasn’t enough." - Aimee Rizzo

My favorite Seattle teriyaki tofu. I used to get takeout a lot when I worked nearby and the tofu was always perfectly crispy outside and tender inside, only in the package for a short time. The sauce is the right amount of both sweet and salty. I order extra sauce sometimes, as I did in the most recent picture, in case I want it for leftovers or for another meal in the next couple days. I got delivery across town this time. You have to set expectations appropriately for delivery teriyaki tofu as it usually loses crispiness on the journey. I went back through old pictures and found one from 2021, and the surface texture does look more different than just a long car ride, honestly, but I was still really happy with my meal, it was delicious. So it’s possible they have a different preparation now than in the old picture. I would like to eat at the restaurant and see what peak crispiness is like, but I have either had a short lunch break or have not been nearby. When I have picked up, the place was always clean and the staff were friendly and efficient. They give a huge portion of tofu! I sometimes make more rice for the leftover tofu. They do not use egg on the tofu and didn’t before either (I checked again because I hadn’t been in a while). I don’t remember it being marked as vegan on the menu but I want to use that word in the review in case anyone is searching. You want this.

Google
Perfect spicy chicken teriyaki. Picked up, but inside is nice, friendly staff. Don't be afraid of the yellow sauce for the salad. Heft amount for $15 after tax!

Me and my mom went for the first time and didn’t realize they weren’t open yet (I assumed bc the door was open) and the owner was kind enough to still take our order. We got chicken and beef, there was a lot of meat, they have two different sauces for the salad which you don’t see anywhere. Overall amazing! I will be back!! I apologized sincerely before I left too!

Google
Delicious food! Fantastic service! Himitsu always goes above and beyond to make sure your dining experience is great. Definitely worth a visit. They get bonus points for offering complimentary soup before you get your meal, as well.

Google
This was an excellent experience and a calm, clean atmosphere. We came here for lunch and the food was delicious. I had the Terriyaki barbecue chicken with kalbi! The food very tasty and tender, the marinade was flavorful. The host was very friendly and we also got complimentary Gyoza! I rate this restaurant 5 out of 5 stars! I will definitely be back to try the house fried rice.

I went to himitsu a couple weeks ago for the 1st time. As we walked in the lady behind the counter greeted us with a big warm smile and a welcome. I tried one of the bento trays they offered. Of course what I wanted was not on the menu. So I asked if she could change a couple of things. And of course they did with no questions asked. She offered us a bowl of the complementary soup 🍲. I said sure. It was hot and spicy soup. It was sooooo delicious. As we are waiting for the food the lady was greeting every one with a big smile and a welcome. She was laughing and joking with what seemed like her regular customers. We got our food and it was delicious. Since I have been back 2 more times. The food great and the lady's welcoming smile. I will continue to go here. Keep up the good work and the great food.

Google
This place is fantastic! Excellent teriyaki, huge portions, gyoza are great. It's our go-to spot for cozy nights with good food. Basically a second kitchen for us. The service is fantastic and really fast for what they do. The owner is one of the nicest and most down to earth people out there.

Google
The spicy teriyaki was great! I really liked the corn added into the salad dressing. And the service was great. Highly recommend.

Yelp

Yelp
Super nice staff! Five stars to the guy with the sincere smile behind the counter. Chicken super spicy! We thought it was good. Portions very reasonably priced. Gyoza would have been tastier if steamed not fried. I did ask if they were fried before ordering...

Yelp
First time here, and last. Flavorless. Completely void of taste. No ginger with the CA rolls and no salad with teriyaki. Who does that? Blah and yuck.

Yelp
Best local teriyaki in my area. And the people behind the counter are always nice. Take out orders are always correct!

Yelp
Ordered take out, #22 Big Himitsu- Comes with Chicken Egg Roll, Gyoza, Rice and Salad- It was super delicious - Everything was great and the teriyaki sauce was really good also. This is my first time here, won't be my last- Want to try the spicy- Such large portions was two meals for me- Will order again, Yum Yum Yum

Yelp
Food is great for a quick lunch or dinner. I often get the teriyaki chicken and chicken katsu combo and it is a lot of food. I normally have one whole section of protein left over for another meal. The yakisoba is also very good. The teriyaki tofu is a HUGE portion, my mother-in-law got it and we actually were laughing at how much tofu she got. I think we used it in 2 other meals! There is also something magical about their salad dressing. The salad is very basic mixed lettuce but their dressing is sooo good I sometimes get an extra side salad just to get more dressing.

Vlad D.

Yelp
Really small portions, you will either leave hungry or spend 50$ per person it's is pricey

Yelp
Consistent satisfied with orders, staff were pleasant and welcoming and food were good

Yelp
I used to really love teriyaki in Seattle but due to the current trends in casual dining, many teriyaki spots have been replaced with Poke spots... Teriyaki used to be a quick, affordable, and relatively healthy meal. Himitsu charges 70% more than what is expected for gamey chicken, awful sauce, and a "side" salad that is 5 pieces of lettuce with a horrible dressing. The only thing keeping this place in business is it is one of the last standing bastions of teriyaki in town... I wish this place was swapped with a Poke spot. I wouldnt be surprised or upset if this place turned into a Poke spot, the rice would be better, the green would be better, and the protein wouldnt be stringy. Your's truly, An honest teriyaki fan!

Yelp
Himitsu Teriyaki was on the route home, so we randomly choose this teriyaki spot and I'm glad we did. *Ample parking. If you're ordering in person, good amount of space indoors to wait and eat. There is an option to order online and pick up. Kind customer service. Self-sufficient water station. *Food was delicious and reasonably priced. Chicken had a nice char, which my partner was a huge fan of. The tofu was surprisingly huge! I expected little bite size squares of tofu, but was surprised to receive 8 beautifully fried pieces. The side salad dressing was yummy and the greens were crisp. Noodles, egg roll, and potsticker were all really tasty and weren't too oily. We'll be back! And maybe we'll try one of their shakes next time.

Yelp
The food is consistently good. Our favorite is the short rib meal. The milkshakes whatever the flavor is a touch above what you would find at any fast food drive thru or restaurant. Check it out - it's a neighborhood favorite.

Yelp
This is your best neighborhood teriyaki. I've been ordering take out from them and they are clean, sanitized, and have proper protective material placed where necessary. The food is classic. I usually order the #22 Big Himitsu, realy gives you a bang for it's buck. 13.99 ish for chicken teriyaki, chicken egg roll, 4 gyozas, rice, and a nice veggie yakisoba. Their chicken teriyaki will not disappoint- grilled to perfection. I would recommend calling them directly and picking up the food (usually done within 15 minutes of calling) as I've had numerous issues with pick up through a food order app. If it weren't for the pandemic they offer free miso soups self service to go but as it is a pandemic, I would ask nicely on the phone when you're ordering takeout that you want miso soup if you really want it

Yelp
My in laws live in the area; and frequent Himitsu often. I've found myself ordering teriyaki to go; so we can hit up Growler Guys down the road. The food has improved since the last time I reviewed it. I actually wish this was in my hood, because I would definitely make this my weekly teriyaki fix. Their prices are on par with everyone else; but you get so much more bang for your buck here for portion size! They really hook it up! The chicken breast is so good. It's not dry, it's not rubbery; it's perfect! Sauce is great. I love this spot! Disregard my last rating; they've definitely improved!

Ryan W.

Yelp
I really liked this place, but in the last 8 months or so you can tell it's not the same owners and it shows. You used to get a decent amount of food and now you are lucky to be full after eating what you get. The spicy sauce seems to be different. I understand getting teriyaki isn't cheap like it used to be but what happened to having leftovers .
google avatar

Yelp
This place is awsome! I have tried this place for several times and their food is very good. Especially for the price!! No doubt you have to try this place for sure. Also they started Shakes!!! Very nice and must try!!!!

Yelp
Consistently tasty! Excellent katsu, and the standard house special number one feels like decent value for the food you receive. Have also enjoyed their California rolls in the past, would happily try anything on their menu.

Yelp
TL;DR: Great food. Don't order the yakisoba. Excellent teriyaki. I order from here pretty regularly, as I live with in walking distance. Any of the teriyaki dishes are wonderful, and I'd recommend all of them. Great price, too. The salad is a little underwhelming, but it isn't really the focus of the dish anyway, so I never find myself minding too much. I highly recommend AGAINST the yakisoba. Totally flavorless and with a weird, musty scent. Everything else I've tried from here has been great, but the yakisoba is just terrible. I will note one thing, though: as of recently, the sauce has been a little... strange? The teriyaki sauce is normally one of the better ones I've had, but lately, it's had this strange mouthfeel that it leaves, almost like someone tried to thicken it with corn starch but didn't quite finish cooking the corn starch. Strange, dusty, starchy feeling left on the tongue with every bite. Maybe a new cook in the kitchen? No clue. Would recommend anyway. Get the teriyaki, ignore everything else.

Yelp
Sadly the recent reviews are true , this place has just gone downhill and it's normally been great. Got the large spicy teriyaki and it's now $17 / wow. Unpacked it and the scorching sauce and chicken burned my hand. So what appears is happening is they are making large batches of chicken and then throwing it in a microwave for ten minutes and throwing it together like that. Meat was so overcooked it was almost petrified - I'm like WTF - Hot sauce is still great but please go back to making cooked to order and not bulk junk. Avoid until this is fixed. Bummer -
google avatar

Michael W.

Yelp
Great Place. Local Teriyaki joint is always a plus. Consistently severing great tasting, high quality food. Additionally, it's not just teriyaki. As is the case when I go there. They offer a plentiful amount of meats, fish and vegetables to choose from that is cooked and accompanyiand delicacies in your meal. Best of all the take out is only about a three minute wait if you know what you're doing.
google avatar

Walter k.

Yelp
Great food and service we eat here every time we're in Seattle. Prices are reasonable as well.

Michael H.

Yelp
This place used to have excellent teriyaki, but I have been here twice recently and the quality of the food has really tanked. Juicy, sweet, and tender chicken teriyaki should be the flagship menu item for any teriyaki restaurant, but Himitsu's rendition is the exact opposite: dry, bland, and tough. It tastes as if it has been pre-cooked days in advance and heated in the microwave, and then served with generic sauce out of a jug. Even the rice was dry. Adding a star for friendly and expedient service, but it's not enough to keep me coming back, which is unfortunate because the location is very convenient. Advice for the owner: try a little bit harder. It's not terribly difficult to make decent teriyaki, and there are too many excellent teriyaki restaurants around to think that you are going to make it selling subpar microwaved slop once the word gets out.

Jonny C.

Yelp
Really good teriyaki. You gotta get the large though. It's so much more food, even if you eat it over two meals. The guy working there is always super nice and he's consistently got a clean ass cut too. Would definitely recommend if in the Maple Leaf area.

Yelp
I ordered #7 California Rolls and Gyoza 5 Pieces $14.99 Dumpling with a minced filling. The photos in the shop showed normal California roles, but instead of crab they used fake crab salad instead, They used the humans smallest bit of cucumber if that is what it was. The texture and flavor was bad. I don't think that they use real wasabi as it had no flavor and I had to ask for 5 servings and still it was not very spicy. The Gyoza was terrible and had no flavor. My husband did not like his food either. This is a shame as it is right around the corner form my house but we agreed never to go there again.

Yelp
Horrible customer service.. I was alright the first time. Enjoyed the food and what not... but the dude and his wife are complete a**holes honestly the most disrespectful people I've encountered in a while when it comes to eating out or in this case (taking out) I ordered 2 fried rice and 2 salads. I get there and there is only 1 fried rice and 2 salads made.. I said that my wife ordered 2 fried rice and instead of an easy fix (me paying for what i wanted) he would rather argue with me.. his wife last time was the same way. Good food doesn't make up for HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE. I'll never spend another $ here.

M C.

Yelp
Hi Himitsu, years ago your chicken teriyaki used to be really good, juicy and tender. But lately, it's as tough as cardboard. You need to hold back on the grilling maybe cut back about 3 to 4 minutes. It's way too tough. You can see from the photo in the top left what was not chewable, or should I say, the meat was too chewable. I couldn't swallow it because no matter how long I chewed, it never softened up to make it palatable enough to swallow....so I spit it out. Please fix the grill issue. Otherwise, your gyoza is the bomb.

Yelp
Saw this restaurant on the side of the road and was intrigued as a friend had told me they liked the restaurant. It didn't look like much on the outside but the inside was quite nice. They had complimentary (vegetable?) soup that tasted nice, and I had three bowls. I ordered the regular sized chicken teriyaki, which came with a large amount of chicken which surprised me especially for the price which wasn't too high! The chicken teriyaki itself tasted amazing and that plus the soup was a nice combination. The food got to our table quick and the staff was very friendly. While the outside doesn't look like much and there's limited parking in the little area with the restaurant, I'd highly recommend this place!

Michael P.

Yelp
Wow. This place keeps raising their prices which is fine except that the food quality continues to go way down. My buddy and I have been very disappointed the last two times ? We were hoping the first time was a fluke). My friend's Teriyaki was dry and fatty and tough and leathery... the last two times. In the good old days their teriyaki was moist, juicy and delicious. Now it is like jerky.., it literally is hard to chew. The new owners are friendly but even though because of Covid there is no more delicious complimentary soup the prices seem to go up every few months while the food quality has plummeted. Sad, but I won't be going back until I read some reviews that say things are back to normal.
google avatar

Patrick C.

Yelp
Like many of the teriyaki places here in Seattle they're all pretty similar. This place is no exception in terms of menu options. But I feel like the quality and the service or a step above. Staff has always been super nice and kind. The food arrives hot and fresh

Paul T.

Yelp
I've tried this spot 3x in recent months as it's just a few blocks from our home...each time we've been disappointed. Ordered chicken teriyaki on each visit (nothing exotic) and it was tough and overcooked each time. Last night my to-go order was filled in less than 5 minutes and was Luke warm and tough...which suggests there's a big 'ole pile of pre-cooked chicken back in the kitchen just waiting for 1 minute of warming! Definitely Not braving a 4th try!
google avatar

Yelp
I love Himitsu on lake city. I used to live by it and TOTALLY took it for granted. Have moved since and have been searching for the chronic teriyaki.... To be frank, despite the move, I would continue to go OUT OF MY WAY for himitsu teriyaki. It's super well made, fresh ingredients, free tea, free egg drop soup, generous portions, reasonable pricing.... I don't know what you would need besides the promise of immortality...... ..... Heads up, closed on Mondays....

John R.

Yelp
I didn't think it was possible to screw up spicy chicken teriyaki, but my order was nearly inedible. As others have noted, the teriyaki seems to be made in advance and then microwaved when ordered. The result is tough chicken, more like jerky than teriyaki. I, unfortunately, got the large size ($17.72). Very expensive and low quality. Not recommended.
google avatar

Sam S.

Yelp
This is the best teriyaki in town! Teriyaki has been one of my favorite foods for as long as I can remember and I take pride in the fact that I have been almost all teriyaki places in the Seattle area. When it comes down to the sauce, chicken, gyoza and salad dressing this place does it the best. And for a reasonable price. Go get you some himitsu teriyaki!!

Beverly F.

Yelp
Our first time here and they are very friendly and had great customer service. The food was delicious! The best teriyaki I've had in along time. Not to mention the Nutella Shake was yummy! We will definitely be coming back.
google avatar

Kevin W.

Yelp
Himitsu Teriyaki and Zaina are two outstanding restaurants that are close together on this tiny patch of land. Every time I pass by here, I don't know which one I'd rather choose. But I do know that Himitsu will definitely fill you up because its portions are huge at reasonable prices. The special thing about this place is that you will be full no matter what. They provide an endless supply of soup while you wait. One bowl of soup probably fulfills half your sodium needs for the day, but it also means there isn't really any waiting for your food. The dishes themselves are also pretty good and generous with the portions. That's the main draw of this restaurant: quick, easy meals that won't leave you hungry.
google avatar

Samantha B.

Yelp
NEVER BUY ANYTHING FROM HERE!! The lady is absolutely rude and hung up on me multiple times when I was trying to resolve a simple issue... I wanted to order salad dressing. We made a door dash order to Seattle children's and she knew exactly where it was going. For someone to know we're obviously staying at the children's hospital for a serious reason and treat us the way they did is BEYOND wrong. This business should be shut down for the lack of customer service. Or the lady should just be fired. The 1 cent it would have costed them to give us a side of salad dressing has cost them a customer who will never go back and will never let anyone I know go there. Every nurse I've talked to here will know never to recommend this place to anyone staying here. Very disappointing.
google avatar

Chelsea P.

Yelp
I didn't even get a chance to try the food because the woman was incredibly rude before I even had a chance to order. I walked in with the intent to order, and I had a small piece of trash that I put in their waste basket as I entered. The woman at the counter yelled at me and said it was for customers only, I explained that I was wanting to order lunch and she wouldn't have it. She told me I couldn't order food and actually made me remove my piece of trash from the wastebasket. I've never had an encounter that ugly before and I can't imagine this person providing polite service based on what I experienced. People shouldn't be able to get away with being so hateful.

Michael C.

Yelp
This was my first visit and likely the last. The few vegetables in the kung pao chicken were wilted and the chicken was unappetizing. The entire entree looked like it was left over from the day before.

frank y.

Yelp
Really bad quality sushi. The California roll looks disgusting. Totally different from pictures on their website. I ordered online and definitely won't try one more time.
google avatar

Manchun Y.

Yelp
We love Himitsu Teriyaki! The foods amazing and the couple that works there are super nice, good portion, cheap price, and close to our house. Our go to is chicken teriyaki and one of the bento boxes, fills us up every time and quality is always good! Love it!
google avatar

Russell J.

Yelp
This place is way better than its star rating! Clean, modern, fast and the food plentiful and delicious. 7.95 for chicken and gyoza! And free soup...go
google avatar

Fatin A.

Yelp
We had wanted to place an order for 20 kids at Meadowbrook Teen Life Center. The worker on the phone said they'd be closing in 30 minutes and did not want to service such a big order.
google avatar

Teresa K.

Yelp
The spicy chicken is particularly good. The teriyaki sauce and katsu chicken were also delicious. The California roll was a little too creamy (if that's a thing) for me. We'll be back.
google avatar

Laura L.

Yelp
We love this lil teriyaki place. It's close to where we live so sometimes we walk over but I've also ordered it on doordash with great success. I love getting the combo because the egg rolls are excellent and I'm a sucker for potstickers. I've always gotten the spicy sauce and it's so good! They also have free soup if you come into the restaurant which is really yummy. My mom said she would come just to eat the soup!
google avatar

J.L. H.

Yelp
Ordered here for the first time tonight to go. Just ordered the basic chicken teriyaki and it was barely warm and very dry. They only included one small container of teriyaki sauce. Definitely NOT enough for this dry teriyaki. Do not recommend!!
google avatar

Red B.

Yelp
It's a good place to stop for a quick, filling meal. I come here often because I work across the street and the options are really this, Subway, Little Caesars and Zaina. So, in order to not eat the same thing over and over, I switch it up. I like this place because of the free soup (awesome during this cold winter) and nice service. However, as far as how it stacks up to other Teriyaki places I've been to, it's not the best. Good, just not AS good. I've had the beef teriyaki, chicken teriyaki, yakisoba and the fried rice. Everything tasted great. The fried rice was a liiiiittle greasier than others that I've had and the chicken was cubed, which was a little weird and unnatural looking. Still, it will do the job and cure your hunger and then some.
google avatar

Nicole F.

Yelp
Cute little spot. I love how they have the complimentary bowl of soup while I'm waiting for my food too!
google avatar

Emanuel M.

Yelp
Just ordered the General Tso's chicken with white to go, and man they were fast!! Really great General Tso's also! Thanks, first time trying the place and it's just down the street. Thank you for your hospitality and friendly staff.
google avatar

Wiz D.

Yelp
Great value, free soup, water, lollipops for the kids... Self serve so you don't have to wait. Teriyaki is nothing special but it's not terrible.
google avatar

Yelp
I love Himitsu. It's my go-to take-out place a couple times a month when my husband's not cooking dinner. Our standard order is a chicken teriyaki and a gyoza plate (extra salad, less rice). My husband and I divvy up the chicken and dumplings, and with rice and salad it's a light but filling dinner. The quality's consistently good - chicken is well-cooked and not fatty; gyoza are deep-fried crisp with tasty filling. Prices are good, service is friendly and quick (especially when you call ahead - just give them 10 minutes). Enjoy.
