9 Best SF Restaurants for Sake and Seafood Pairings | Eater

"Hinata translates to “sunny place” in Japanese, and it’s an apt description: The sushi bar is brightly lit with daylight-toned drop lights, bolstered with additional under-bar lighting. It throws the delicate work of the sushi chefs Gavin Leung and Weida Chen into sharp relief: voluptuous scallops with crystal sea salt, Spanish mackerel gently smoked in cherry wood, ankimo (monkfish liver) dotted with ponzu jelly. But don’t let the minimalist décor fool you — the vibe is decidedly relaxed, the music upbeat, and the choose-your-own sake cup process always fun. Reach for a sublime junmai daiginjo like Cold Mountain Water from Kitaya Kansansui or a rice-forward junmai like 9 Headed Dragon from Kokuryu Kuzuryu to end your meal on a high note." - Vox Creative

Google
I dont eat sushi but I came here on a whim to check out the other options. Ordered the katsu chicken, cream cheese rangoons, and my boyfriend got a poke bowl. Would've ordered an appetizer too but thats doing too much. Everything was delicious! My boyfriends poke bowl came with a soup, I tried it but I dont like soup. He said it was good though. My rangoons were crisped well and my katsu was breaded so good, and it was a lot of food so we were both able to eat half and save the other half for lunch the next day. Next time I come here ill try the Thai tea and a vegetable roll (again, I dont like traditional sushi with fish). My server made good recxomendations and I spoke with 2 employees who were both very helpful. I love this place. Giving it a 3 star for atmosphere as I came here on a weekend night and it was busy and seemed a little small. Ill try again on a weekday and come back to update.

😚🤌 We sat near the chefs so we were chatting with them. It was great. Service was good and fast and food was amazing. **Some items we had arent on the menu. We asked if they can make it if we brought uni and the cucumber roll was a special roll

Erika S

Google
The happy hour deal here is great, and the service is really good as well. The actual sushi rolls were just fine in my opinion. They're large, which seems to fit the price, but I had quite a few fishy pieces. (Fishier than l'd like my sushi to taste.) The salmon carpaccio and garlic tofu were very tasty. I'll be back to try the lunch special as well!

Google
First time dining in and everything was good. Good food, good service, amazing choices on the menu. Definitely our go to spot for sushi and it’s not too far from where we live.

Google
Everyone that works at Narumi Sushi is very nice, they treated us well and the food was delicious. We normally eat at the one on Fletcher Parkway but the are only take out now. They have a very large and diverse menu. We tried the Avocado Tempura and it was SO good! Hand rolls were big and full of good stuff. We loved everything and wish we could have eaten more. We will be back.

Google
Good Japanese restaurant. They have a complete Japanese menu -- sushi, rice dishes, fried dishes, bento boxes, and ramen and udon, etc. All dishes are good, but interestingly my favorite is the chicken fried rice. Their tempura dishes are also flavorful. Overall, a tasty Japanese restaurant.

Google
I’ve been to this sushi spot several times and always appreciated their variety and freshness. However, during my most recent visit, the rice was noticeably stiff and tasted as if it might have been old. Hoping this was just an off day, as I’ve usually enjoyed their food!

Erick C.

Google
Service is always accommodating, wait time is minimal... any food off the menu (which I've tried almost all) is above par. Happy hour is worth having an early dinner. There aren't enough stars allowed on the app for my wife and I to rate our busy weekly date night schedule.... could add pictures if I remembered to take them the moment the entrées came out...remembered after I devoured them so an empty plate wouldn't make sense.

Yelp
I absolutely LOVE this place, my daughter and I try to come here at least 1x/week for our dinner date. We love sushi! Hinata Sushi to be exact haha The sushi is always served great and fresh! The staff is absolutely amazing, very friendly and knowledgeable of the food if you're needing assistance. They greet and seat right away! The lighting here seems to be perfect and the music is well diversified. While I sit there I see MANY DoorDash, order going out, but the does not effect the service by no means. Give this place a try, add it to your new favorites and then thank me! Haha

Yelp
My husband and I have been loyal patrons of Hinata Sushi in Lemon Grove for years, through multiple ownership changes, and I can confidently say it's one of our favorite neighborhood gems! The quality has stayed consistently solid, making it a reliable go-to for à la carte sushi when we're not in the mood for all-you-can-eat. We always order the Submarine Roll (so flavorful and perfectly balanced) and a variety of hand rolls--fresh, generous portions every time. The takoyaki is a must; crispy outside, gooey inside, and packed with octopus goodness. Everything we've tried is on point, from the fish quality to the rice seasoning. Seating is quick depending on the time (we love early evenings or weekdays to avoid any wait), and the service is fast and friendly without feeling rushed. It's an overall great experience with delicious food that keeps us coming back. Highly recommend for sushi lovers in the area!

Yelp
Came here with my partner for some late-night sushi. It was my first time, though she's been here a few times before. We were seated within five minutes, and our server came by shortly after to grab our drinks and answer any questions, a solid start. To start, we got the Takoyaki. Then we ordered the Kamikaze Roll Combo and the Protein Rainbow Roll. I'll admit, I'm pretty picky when it comes to sushi since I usually stick to my go-to AYCE spot, but this place was definitely valid. The fish tasted fresh, prices were fair, and the spicy garlic chili oil my partner ordered was to die for. Definitely a spot I'll be coming back to whenever I'm in the Lemon Grove area.

Yelp
Love how this place is 10 min away from home. Dined in once before and it is a really popular place (went during happy hour) so of course there was a wait! Nonetheless sushi and quality is very good! Ever since then, I been ordering to go.

Yelp
BB and I usually get take out from here, but we have dined in once with our neighbors. Usually its packed in the evenings, but we went during lunch on a Saturday it was not so packed, and quite a pleasant experience. This is the best American style fast sushi in San Diego. The fish is always fresh, food tastes good, and quality is consistent. I always get the truckstop roll (fresh yellowfish) and vegetable tempura. We always know that we can count on this place to fulfill our sushi cravings without being dissapointed. Though the parking lot can get packed, there are always spaces available. Service for both dining in and take out are always great. Easy 5 star and part of our regular rotation.

Yelp
SATISFACTION GUARANTEED I'm picky when it comes to sushi and it can be a challenge to find that sweet spot of taste and price. Hinata ranks Top 5 in my sushi discography in San Diego, why you say.... Because the don't do to much, which keeps the flavors consistent and is he cost low. And for a fellow resident of Lemon Grove it's these best in The Grove!!! The bonus for me is the Chili oil!! With the crunchy garlic.. put this on any roll to set it off!!! We Love Hinata Sushi!!!
google avatar

Yelp
Affordable sushi and ramen compared to other Japanese restaurants. The ambiance is good, cozy comfortable seating. We decided to sit in a booth. I had changed my sushi order and the waiter was very understanding. Plenty of parking here! Thank Goodness! This has ONLY been my 2nd visit here. For this visit, I introduced my boyfriend & his best friend to dine here! They enjoyed their food as much as I had.

Yelp
Service ok. Food horrible. Could improve the food. Lots of room for improvement. Greasy and cold

Yelp
Wow, why has no one shared this hidden gem? I've passed this plaza numerous times and never actually noticed this place. We were a party of 2 and came in just before 530pm. We were seated and ordered with our hungry eyes. We enjoyed two large strawberry sake for the happy hour which got us $2 accompaniments - we chose karrage and spicy tuna roll. We also ordered fried soft shell crab and four rolls. Needless to say, there was plenty of food to take home. The food was delicious and a bargain of a deal. Would recommend if you're in the area.

Yelp
Discovered as a total accident after random trip to Kohls. The Samurai and Spider rolls were delicious, the staff was friendly, definitely will visit again next time I'm in the area.

Yelp
Went here for lunch and had a really good experience! The staff were very attentive and friendly--our waitress in particular made us feel welcome right away. The food was pretty good; definitely worth trying! Prices are reasonable, and overall it's a great spot for a casual sushi meal.

Yelp
Presentation was beautiful! Always a good time coming here. We got a Godzilla, salmon nigiri, yellowtail nigiri, tamago nigiri, eel nigiri, and special rolls

Yelp
This is my partners and I new GO TO sushi spot now. We discovered it two months ago here on yelp and have been here about 5 times now. Sushi is GOOD. Our favorite is the samurai roll. We have also discovered the samurai plater with 4 different rolls. We typically get that plus a new appetizer to try out. So far my favorite appetizer was the Mushubi. The calamari is also really good, and cheaper than most restaurants. You cant go wrong with the miso soup here too. I will say I was disappointed by the boba but everything has been a hit. I will say the ambience can definitely improve. Most of the booths are ripped and the tables are wobbly. The art here is cool to look at and I always catch myself singing along to the music. (Ty to who ever is on aux and playing frank ocean) also the service is good. They check up on you regularly. Overall I really recommend this spot! And I willll be back

Yelp
Sushi's great here, love the chow mein & Thai tea. Get big servings here & they're very hospitable.

Yelp
Holy jesus Service was great. We sat next to the chefs so we were chatting with them. Food came quick and we even got a cucumber roll one of the chefs was trying to taste. It was super refreshing!

Yelp
Hinata Sushi is a no-frills sushi restaurant that one of my friends recommended in the Lemon Grove area. Since living in San Diego, I have always felt sushi is a little pricey where I live in Hillcrest, however this spot is one of the less trendier places that offer sushi at a very reasonable price. I came here for lunch on a Friday with a couple friends, and we each got their bento box special and shared a couple sushi rolls. Between the three of us, our bill was about $20 including tax and tip which was such a steal! Their lunch bento is $12.95 and you get the pick of two items that range from raw sashimi to tempura or teriyaki chicken, and comes with salad, edamame, rice, and miso soup. For sushi rolls, we got their spicy scallop and yellowtail roll. Each of the rolls were under $10 and were pretty decent in size. If you aren't feeling any bento box or sushi, they have many other options like noodles, curry, and rice bowls. For lunch time, our parking situation was pretty easy in the lot provided. I can see this area get more crowded maybe in the evenings, and it isn't situated in the most convenient area for off-site parking as it's right off the busy freeway. I would definitely come back for another sushi meal if I'm in the area.

Yelp
I have been here a few times and always get the delicious sushi rolls. Today I wanted to try one of the lunch specials. On the menu they have a "Kitchen Lunch Special " options. The prices were very affordable and with your protein option you get rice, salad, miso soup and fried gyoza. It was very good! Great customer, friendly and attentive. 2024(14)

Yelp
Great value, good quality, good quantity. This is my second time at this restaurant and both times i've been very pleased with what we ordered. The restaurant is clean with good seating but doesn't have an overly fancy appearance which is perfect for a quick casual dining experience. The servers were quick to greet us and help us to our table but throughout our dining experience we had to flag them down a couple times to get things. The different rolls were all extremely affordable ranging between $7 for the simple rolls to $15 for the specialty and baked rolls. We did not get to try any of the nigiri. All of the rolls we ordered were very tasty and there weren't any rolls that we thought were particularly bad by any means. One thing we really enjoyed in particular was the Spicy Tofu appetizer. It was so delicious and flavorful and the leftover sauce makes for a great dip to use on other rolls. I personally really like ginger and eel sauce so I asked for those on the side and I thought they really elevated my experience with the sushi. The value at Hinata is unparalleled for the quantity of food you get also. I find myself spending less here to feel the same level of satisfaction than if I were at an AYCE sushi spot. I'd definitely recommend this place if you are looking for a casual sushi dining experience without breaking the bank.

Yelp
for friendly staff, delicious vegetarian options, generous portion sizes, and a large menu of tasty looking food- come to hinata sushi. my family came late on father's day and they were still happy to help us after what i assume was a busy day for everyone there. we will definitely return! everyone in my family loved their food. ( +my mom is gluten free and i am vegetarian and they were more than accommodating and very carefully catered to our needs- checking with the chef on ingredients to make sure everything was to our liking. )

Yelp
Omg the monkey punch roll here! This place is great and what gives them that wow is the one and only money punch roll. Ive never had a roll with banana in it before and I never imagined it would be my fave roll until I tried it here. I would go here pretty often with my best friend for lunch and out of all the rolls I've tried, the monkey punch roll knocked the others out of the ring! Don't get me wrong, the other ones were great! The protein roll is my second fave, but I think it's the Caribbean girl in me that can't get enough of the monkey punch roll.
google avatar

Yelp
I love their ramen, we usually get it with extra pork. The salmon kama is also really good and truck stop roll.
google avatar

Rachel K.

Yelp
The ambiance is your standard restaurant but it smells nice and clean when you enter. I ordered the house salad, the dressing is fresh and super good. The ginger doesn't overpower the dish and it has a really good umami taste to it. I also ordered the gyoza, can't really go wrong there. The dipping sauce was really good. For my entree I ordered the pork cutlet with Japanese curry, the rice was sticky enough to where it didn't fall apart in chop sticks. The curry flavor was really good, you have to get their homemade chili garlic oil with it, it adds a lot of flavor to the curry but the curry is a shining star all in itself. The portions are really big and worth the price. Anthony was my server, he was a gem and provided excellent service. He actually suggested the crispy garlic chili oil. Sweet man. 10/10 would recommend coming here for the items I purchased. I'm happy I stopped by.

Yelp
This is my go to for sushi, chicken fried rice, and Yakisoba noodles. They're reasonably priced and you get a good amount of food. I'll have to update my review the next time we go, because there will be a next time. My family and I are always just too busy eating to take pictures. I have a picky 8 year old and a teen and they love it.
google avatar

Yelp
Absolutely amazing! The sushi is fresh, beautifully presented, and full of flavor. The service is warm and attentive, making the whole experience feel special. Hinata Sushi is definitely my new go-to spot!
google avatar

Yelp
This is a good place to go when you're in the neighborhood. The food is good and you get what you expect. The sushi is fresh and the bento boxes are excellent. The whole gang enjoyed their order.

Yelp
My husband has been to Hinata sushi before with a friend, so he suggested going there for dinner. My husband and I arrive around 7:00 pm. There is a roomy parking lot with plenty of parking. We went through the doors of the restaurant and immediately noticed how crowded and stuffy it was. We saw a list to add our name to a waitlist, so I added my name, and immediately, a lady noticed us and sat us at a table in the back. This restaurant was so packed with people that you could barely walk around the tables. We immediately noticed that their thermostat on the wall said it was 84 degrees inside, and the AC was set to 69 degrees. Sounds like they need their AC looked at because that is simply not acceptable. The waitress took our drink order. I ordered a raspberry iced tea, and my husband ordered a coke. Luckily, we had straws because my husband noticed that there was lipstick on the rim of his glass. He didn't want to complain about it, that's his choice. The restaurant was so loud that we could barely hear each other. The music was a horrible tiktok Playlist too. The menu is very large with a huge variety of food. The waitress came over maybe 1 minute later and asked what we wanted to order. We barely had time to look at the menu, so she said she would come back. I ordered fried gyoza as an appetizer for the table. I ordered an avocado and salmon roll and seared avocado nigiri. My husband ordered a Yamato roll and a Philly roll. We waited about 10 minutes or so before they brought over 2 rolls to our table. My husband and I were confused because my roll didn't look like the avocado salmon roll. My husband ate one of the pieces of his roll, but I hadn't touched mine yet. The waitress came back over and said they made a mistake and brought the wrong rolls over, and she took the two rolls away. A minute later, she brings over the fried gyoza. We both tried the gyoza, and it was pretty good, but the sauce they have is extremely salty. Before we are done with the gyoza, the waitress comes back and brings back the roll my husband ate a piece from and said that it was actually the correct roll. My husband went ahead and ate it. He was not impressed with the Yamoto roll at all. The waitress did eventually bring over my avocado salmon roll, and my husband's Philly roll to the table. My husband said the Philly roll was pretty good. My avocado salmon roll was decent, but the avocado was not fully ripe, so the avocado was a little too firm for my taste. The waitress brought out the seared salmon nigiri. The seared salmon nigiri was pretty good. My husband and I were not impressed with this place at all, and we would not come back. Maybe we just went on an off night, I'm not sure. When we were leaving the restaurant, we saw how busy it had gotten in the front with people waiting. I was perplexed as to why all these people who wait in a big line to get a seat here. Maybe they just don't know what good sushi is.

Yelp
One year later and still the #1 sushi spot in San Diego IMO!!! This time we had Louisiana, Ceviche and Hanabi Rolls with an Orion beer !!!!! You have to try this place!! Service is amazing and it's great for families.

Zachary A.

Yelp
I've lived and passed by this place for years, I decided to finally give it a try and what a GEM! They are a small and friendly restaurant with deliciously fresh food!!!! Their service is A+ and they were so attentive the table was clean and ready for the next patron as we left! I'll definitely be back!
google avatar

Bianca R.

Yelp
So fire! I love coming here. Sushi and miso are my fav. Spicy edamame fantastic, service is good and vibes are great. 10/10 recommend.
google avatar

Lucy D.

Yelp
Hinata Sushi has officially become my family's neighborhood sushi spot. Their service is always 10/10. My spouse and I were enjoying our Saturday at home and though we love going to the restaurant and eating there, we decided to order online--their website worked great and our order was ready upon arrival. I love their bento, my spouse ordered chicken yakisoba, and we added egg rolls, takoyaki, garlic green beans, and Thai teas. Everything was perfection and we were happy we ordered takeout. Either dine in or takeout, we highly recommend Hinata Sushi!
google avatar

Vivian T.

Yelp
I believe this establishment used to be called Narumi Sushi as we were told by the map and Yelp. It seems like HINATA has taken over as the outside looked to be remodeled a bit? I would round up my review to a four because the service was friendly and the food came out quick. The prices here are very good for being a sushi restaurant but there are some hits and misses about our meal which I will say is really a 3.5 stars. Yellowtail Crudo (4/5): Really nice thick cuts of yellowtail and the jalapeños were thin and crunchy. A bit too much sriracha and sauce but I liked this fish the most. Salmon Crudo (3/5): I would say the cut is more like a sashimi as the slices were very thick. This had the same sriracha and jalapeño topping so not much else made this appetizer different. Ninja Roll (3/5): Tasted pretty good, but the presentation was pretty lacking and a bit messy at the end of the roll. It had spicy tuna and imitation krab inside and salmon slices on top. It did have a lot of flavor though. I would highly recommend HINATA for a sushi spot that doesn't break the bank. I'd also come back for the convenience.
google avatar

LINA M.

Yelp
This is just basically the old Narumi under new management I believe. The only difference is the name change. I love how they kept their menu, kitchen, chefs, and everything the same. They have an extensive menu that can get overwhelming but I do love options! Their rolls are basic but inexpensive and they offer carpaccios and kamas which I love. They do have lunch specials and happy hour pricing. Their rolls are pretty good for inexpensive rolls.
google avatar

Minola M.

Yelp
Service was exceptional. People were kind and patient. I couldn't make up my mind the menu is massive. It is very causal tape covering holes in cushions. The prices, the service and the food make up for any old furniture.
google avatar

Samir H.

Yelp
One of the best sushi places I've been to. Amazing quality sushi roles with plenty of options and extremely fast service on days that are not very packed. Don't let the reviews disappoint you I've visited various sushi places and I've already loved this place. The Thunder Roll and Submarine are my favorite so far.
google avatar

Catalina C.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I had the best experience at Hinata. The sushi was delicious, our favorite sushi in San Diego and we've tried a lot of places. Highly recommend the spicy edamame and the Louisiana Roll! Every single waiter greeted us or checked on us, they had top tier service and were very friendly! They definitely made us feel like family, and we will be back!
google avatar

Julian C.

Yelp
The place smelled kinda musty. Food felt like it was missing and could have used more flavor and could have been more hotter in temperature . The soup was hot and had good flavor. The booth seating was hard and not comfortable to sit on. The place could use a field day cleaning to be more eye appealing.
google avatar

vanessa c.

Yelp
The food is delicious and I genuinely believe you can't go wrong with any item!! Wait tonight was short and we were helped promptly. Unfortunately from there getting any attention from our server was difficult, we did not have enough chop sticks or napkins and it almost seemed as she avoided the table. Have been here before and am hoping it's just an off day I still recommend due to the food and quality but for a better experience maybe try take out
google avatar

Becca ..

Yelp
Food was delicious and reasonably priced. Service was friendly and fast, I highly recommend. We will surely be going back.
google avatar

Drew Y.

Yelp
The sushi here is extremely good, some amazing house rolls and karaage chicken. One of our go-to's if we're in the mood for some good sushi!
google avatar

Kiki H.

Yelp
3.5 stars if I could. Of the two rolls I tried, I liked the Truck Stop Roll the best. It was fresh and light. A little too much green onion (and I like green onion!) Decent size, not too big or too small. I typically enjoy baked rolls but the baked California roll was wayyyyy too rich for me and I couldn't finish it. I can't comment on service since I got delivery but everything was packaged very well and arrived chilled/hot.
google avatar

Bri F.

Yelp
Narumi Sushi quickly became my partner and I's go to sushi spot since moving to the area. We always place our to-go order in over the phone, the service is good, and the food is solid. We really appreciate that there are vegetarian options on the menu since my partner is vegetarian and she struggles to find things to eat at most sushi restaurants. She really enjoys the tempura vegetables and the avocado tempura with cream cheese (appetizers) and the avocado cucumber roll (add cream cheese and substitute soy paper). I've tried quite a few different rolls on the menu and have had a couple of their sushi roll combos. Since I enjoy variety, I usually go with one of their combos, both of which are really great and worth it for how much food you are getting! Solid sushi spot that has decent quality food and good service!

Yelp
I've been to Hinata Sushi about seven times now in the past couple of months. Having been myself in client service/care, in executive jet charter, I take note of consistency in good customer care. Hinata is very consistent in their warm welcome of customers, cleanliness, good wait staff service, and very good food. Their menu has valued priced items, meaning you truly get what you pay for with very fair prices and an abundance of tasty food. Yesterday, I ordered their Bento Box, and really enjoyed it. Two waitresses I've had on repeat visits are awesome in good cheer, explaining their menus and items, and continued checking on you to make sure all is good, or do you need anything. Then when you exit, they always say goodbye and wave. The sushi chefs seem very friendly too. I highly recommend this place. And those two waitress are Nabi & Giau. The other good wait staff, I am sorry I do not know their names.
google avatar

Ruffa G.

Yelp
Servers were friendly. Service was fast. The place needs cleaning. They served the BEST CATERPILLAR ROLL I have ever had!!! The GODZILLA ROLL was good, as well as the Baked scallops ( though there's not a lot of scallops).

Yelp
Great sushi! Awesome service! Super clean and very fresh fish! Great non sushi dishes also!

Yelp
This has become our local, go to sushi spot! Everything is always good and fresh. Love their sushi. Excellent service and great prices.
google avatar

Esperanza O.

Yelp
This is my go-to sushi restaurant. The service is amazing and so quick. My favorite is the salmon carpaccio. Their menu has a wide selection of different dishes and sushi rolls definitely recommend!

Eric L.

Yelp
Well today was a big disappointment. I've been here since this place was called narumi sushi. I order a yakisoba noodle and the only flavor I could taste is how salty it was. I also ordered the fried oysters and the oyster was disgusting. The online order system didn't work so I made a phone order. When I paid for my order, the cashier told me to order online next time. The website ordering system doesn't work on. Please fix it.
google avatar

Brad B.

Yelp
I recently had a chance to go to this place after it was on my radar for a very long time. I'll tell you what, it did not disappoint! I dove into the standard starters with things like edamame, miso soups, and the seaweed salad. While standard they were very good and set the tone for a great meal to follow. I started things off with a spicy tuna roll as I always do when trying a new sushi restaurant because I truly believe it will let you know the quality of the rolls to come. Well, the spicy tuna roll passed the test and my friend and I followed it up with 3-4 specialty rolls but I am blanking on the names! I do remember that we went very tuna heavy and talked about how we didn't miss when ordering them. We were out the door for around $100, which, for me at least is a digestible bill for two people. I will also note that there was a line of people waiting for it to open, another testimony for a quality spot. Oh, also there is no sushi bar seating, only tables but I can overlook that for a few good rolls.
