12 Best Places to Eat and Drink in Frederick, Maryland | Eater DC

"For a taste of Pakistan in downtown Frederick, head to Hinzi’s Kitchen. Hina “Hinzi” Awan has been perfecting her recipes since she was a middle school student in Gaithersburg, and since 2017, has been dishing up Pakistani favorites alongside her husband. Kati rolls are stuffed with a variety of fillings, from gyro to paneer to potato, while bowls are served atop a base of parsley basmati rice and topped with tabbouleh salad, pickled hummus, house-made sauces (don’t miss the mint) and your choice of protein." - Lulu Chang

Google
Great food, lots of choices and best of all, a deep vegan/ vegetarian selection! Greeted pleasantly, we ordered and had our meals very quickly. The dishes were hearty, with authentic spices and ingredients... this is a must-try place in Frederick's growing, diverse dining landscape. We will be sure to return!

Google
I came to this restaurant because of its high reviews and it did not disappoint. The Pakistani food was flavorful, fresh and warmed my soul. The two gentlemen I encountered there were welcoming, polite and you could tell were well educated. I asked Nick B several questions about the menu and asked for a recommendation on what to order and Nick was very patient and thorough in his explanations of each dish. I went with the gyro and chicken bowl. Very delicious. The vibe and decoration was modern and cozy. Great prices too. I'm jealous of the people who live nearby because if i lived here I'd come back all the time. Thanks Hinizi's Kitchen for a wonderful dining experience!

Google
Ate here based on the phenomenal reddit reviews. I was not disappointed, we lived in NYC for 7 years and this food could be successful there. The butter chicken's heat is PERFECT, the way it slowly builds over your meal. The falafel platter's fixings, the hummus, cilantro, all the sauces, frigging inspired. Do yourself a favor and eat here soon and often!

Google
Fresh and delicious. What a delightful addition to Frederick. The butter chicken is excellent. The sauces and accompanying veggies are really fresh.

Google
Hinzi's food is amazing! I built my own salad bowl with chicken, and my husband got the chicken and gyro bowl. Both were absolutely delicious. If you like spicy food, definitely try the red hot sauce and the spicy green sauce. The prices were relatively affordable, and everything tasted homemade. And while the space is small, it's cute with comfy chairs. But I'm come and sit on a rock if it meant if I could enjoy this food. I wish it weren't over two hours from home!

Andy G.

Google
I enjoyed my gyro and chicken bowl very much here. The service is friendly and fast. I would definitely come here again.

Google
We ordered for a lunch office event. The flavor and price are amazing 🤩. But unfortunately we all had the same complaint that it tasted not made to order. Very leftover texture of the meats.

Krishna D.

Google
Blend of perfection! It is so delicious. If tou haven't tried already, please try their chai! The best chai I have ever had! We cannot get enough of the chai.

Yelp
Good! Great casual dining if you're looking for a quick bite. Service was also quick. The food was also great, no complaints. Out of everything I tried the rasmalai cake def took the "cake" lol. It's a definite try if you're into desserts. Last but not least, cute ambiance.

Yelp
Very good, very quick, very affordable. Each takeout dish was very good! Fresh ingredients! Wonderful flavors, food is honest and good! Well done!

Yelp
This is a fast casual place with a specific Pakistani flair. It is just outside the nice downtown part of Frederick in a banal shopping strip, but it was clean inside. Getting takeout was easy and quick. They had clearly labeled vegan options, and I got their version of red beans and rice, which was a hearty, warm dish for a cold day. Among the vegetarian but not vegan options, I got a samosa chaat which had an appropriately diverse mix of flavors and colors, and a chai, which I asked for unsweetened. The spices worked, but I wished I'd just gotten the lightest sugar level. I got a solid two meals out of it, good value for the money. The menu had more things that would be worth trying from my perspective. As fast food goes, this beats most conventional options easily.

Yelp
I ordered 4 chicken rice bowls for my family for dinner and all of us loved them. I noticed this place had great reviews so I'm so glad we have it a change and I'll be back frequently to try everything on the menu. Just note the hot red pepper sauce in the little containers you get with the meal are very spicy. I poured it on and maybe just try it first to see what level heat you can take. The quality, the sauce, all of it is great and it's pretty quick.

Yelp
I love coming to Hinzi's Kitchen because it is a great lunch or dinner spot. I usually eat here during my lunch time and the food is always hot and delish. My fave is the bowl and this last time I created a bowl with chicken and gyro. The mango lasso never disappoints and the fries are always nice and hot. I'll be back for sure.

Yelp
Hinzi's kitchen is a hidden gem! I found it on Google maps and decided to stop by with my husband for a quick lunch when we were in the area. It's so cute and cozy inside. It actually looks like a cafe. I love the furniture and decor. It seems like a great place to study (not sure if they have wi-fi though) or catch up with a friend over yummy Pakistani food. The service is good here. The person who took my order was friendly and was glad to answer my questions about the menu. I ordered the paneer tikka masala kati wrap. It was flavorful and filling. I also ordered the masala chai which was SOO good! Perfect drink during cold weather. The masala fries were disappointing though because they came out kind of soggy. The flavor was good though.
google avatar

Rupel J.

Yelp
This place was okay. The vibe is very casual and the service is pretty fast so it's great for a casual meal or meet up. However the food was below average imo. The wrap didn't have much flavor and the bowl had too much sauce in it. I got the bowl with greens only and there was barely any lettuce in there...not a salad at all. The Chana was pretty good in the samosa chaat though!
google avatar

Rosemary L.

Yelp
Honestly I would love to leave 5 stars because they're usually on point. But, they have started cutting back on quality. I usually get the butter chicken pizza which never disappoints, but the last one I ordered was half the size that they normally are. They have started making much smaller portions but charge the same. It's super disappointing because this was one of my favorite restaurant in the Frederick area.

Yelp
Expectations: To try something new... never had Pakistani food before- and something casual but sit down. The service: excellent customer service. They walked us through the traditional dishes like chicken biryani (on weekends) and a sandwich that I like.a Pakistani gyro. We had no idea what to order so the explanation helped. I do think a picture menu would be helpful. The Food: both my husband and I cannot wait to return. Both dishes mentioned above were flavorful and actually complimented each other nicely! We just kept sharing and neither of us could decide which was better! The place is small- it is inside the previous Boxcar Burgers joint- - probably has ten tables - if that. However- I think any of the food we had would be excellent for take out as well. The place is adorable inside though. Desserts too! They had a counter with cupcakes and mini desserts. We tried the Biscoff Mouse. It was light and airy and not overly sweet. A perfect ending to a perfect lunch! I'm excited to have this in Frederick.

Yelp
A unique take on Pakistani food. The service is great and the ambiance of the restaurant is very homely. The food tastes great and we've been back multiple times. Their chai is super authentic and tastes just like you'd find one off a street in Lahore, Pakistan.
google avatar

Bruce D.

Yelp
I love Hinzi's - particularly the Kati rolls. And I don't know what is in the "white sauce" but they ought to change the name to "Amazing Sauce" it's unbelievable. Highly recommended!

Yelp
Over the years I've seen this location in particular go through multiple restaurants some were pretty good to be honest but I guess each just fell short of attracting a customer base that is loyal enough to keep the lights on and I really hope that isn't the case with Hinzi's Kitchen. This place is a delight. As someone who lived in this city their entire life I've seen it go through significant changes and many for the better and one thing I'm super happy about is the rise of diversity. I've never had Pakistani food so I'm ecstatic to have some so close to me now especially when it's this good. Everything I tasted was bursting with flavors that I never knew I needed in my life lol The owners remodeled everything incredible. I couldn't believe the change when I first walked in. I've been to 100s of restaurants and the owner was top 5 friendliest.

Yelp
I wanted to try something different so I grabbed takeout from this new Pakistani restaurant! I tried the Samosa Chaat and Aloo Tikki Roll. It came with a couple dipping sauces including a mint chutney. The Samosa Chaat was my favorite! The sweet tangy tamarind flavor balanced out the savory mint chutney and other toppings made for a great dish! The crunch of the samosa was perfectly complimented by the soft chickpeas and other toppings. The Aloo Tikki was something I had never tried before and it was good but maybe not my favorite as the spice combination was different than what I am used to, but I'm glad I tried it and the homemade paratha was delicious! The staff was super nice and friendly! Online ordering was super easy and pick-up was seamless. It was decorated super cute and I would recommend to eat-in if you can.

Yelp
Driving back from fixing a door at Spousal Unit's shop I saw a new restaurant in the old Box Car Burgers place, and stopped to see what's what. Very glad I did. Appearance/ambiance: up front are sets of comfortable, upholstered furniture - in a restaurant? Yes indeed. Great for lounging while you wait for pickup, or to eat in if that's your style. A bit further back are traditional small tables and high-tops (all built for two, and you can move them to seat larger groups but beware: the space is small) with metal chairs and stools that are functional and pretty comfortable. Food: smallish menu that befits the limited kitchen space. I ordered the Special Soup (wonderful flavor but a bit heavy on the salt), Chicken Rice Bowl (nice portion size and really, really tasty!), and Signature Chai. I would (and will!) happily order any of them again. Service: I spent a few minutes talking to the owner. He went out of his way to help me pick foods that suit my prefernces without pushing things down my gullet - and checked on me several times as I ate to make sure everything met his and my expectations. Excellent service! i really liked this place, and so did the very chatty diners seated around me - most of whom called themselves regulars. Great googly-moogly; I plan to become a regular too!

Yelp
Tasty authentic food, cool cafe ambiance. Really nice spot to relax and have a great meal near downtown Frederick. Get the roll or a bowl with chai, sit back and enjoy ! Definitely a place I'm gonna keep going back to.

Yelp
Dined in for the first time at Hinzi's. It's a cute restaurant set up with counter ordering, a small waiting area with colorful couches, and a few tables. Prompt and friendly service - a husband/wife who are enthusiastic about sharing Pakistani cuisine with Frederick. We enjoyed everything we ordered: their signature chai (not overly sweet which was a pleasant surprise), beef mantus (fried dumplings), samosa chaat, and chicken kathi roll. The food was well-seasoned and a little spicy (we love the heat though). My only critique is to add reusable plates and silverware for those who choose to dine-in to cut down on the plastic. We're excited to see this new spot with diverse dishes open up in our neighborhood!

Xia B.

Yelp
I didnt take any pictures because i ate the food under 10 minutes. It was great! This was my first time having pakistani food, and i traveled an hour to get this. Worth the gas money. And the food is well priced in my opinion. Must try! Esp the pizza!!
google avatar

Yelp
Love the place. Love the cafe vibe. Amazing food. The biryani was OMG so good. Reminded me of authentic street food from Pakistan. The chicken and beef pastries were amazing. The samosa chat is exactly like what you get at a dhabha in Pakistan. The best was the chicken cheese parta with the mint chutni which reminded me of being home on a Sunday morning. The paratha is very rare to find so really made my day. Great service as well. Will be back to try more of their menu.
google avatar

Elizabeth S.

Yelp
Ordered the gyro bowl and it was lighter than expected. The flavor was good, but it was lacking in toppings. I also ordered the samosa chaat and it was very good. The lady who took my order was very friendly and told me what toppings were on the bowls, but I think it would benefit them if they had them listed in the store as well. Cute little restaurant, not many people dining in but did see people come and go for carry out. I most likely will not go again unless they have heftier rice bowls.
google avatar

Hannah K.

Yelp
The food at this little spot is absolutely delicious, you can tell that it is made authentically. The spices are absolutely amazing, nice heat to it without being over powering, real food not fast food crap.. They have some vegan options I think as well. The decor, seating etc inside Hinzi's Kitchen is so lovely, they really fixed it up nicely. Everyone that has taken my order thus far has been wonderful so I would say that their service and intensiveness is fantastic as well. It's my understanding they're a small business & I love to support them, you should too!!

Meg H.

Yelp
Hinzi's kitchen serves halal cart-style masala and rice bowls. I haven't seen something like it before and was very pleased! All of the meat is halal. We got the chicken masala and chickpea masala bowls. The chickpeas were among the top five I have ever eaten. The chicken had just enough sauce and was well-balanced spice-wise. I hope to come back the next time we are in Frederick!

K B.

Yelp
We had a great lunch here, there's a lot of variety. The schwarma bowls are full of flavor, good hummus and rice. The woman who was working was really sweet and helpful. Even though it's small and you order at the counter it still has a nice atmosphere.
google avatar

Dante' W.

Yelp
To me, I think all halal restaurants are kind of one and the same, but I do like the quality of the food. Could use bigger portions.
google avatar

Jacqueline R.

Yelp
This place is such a great addition to Frederick! One of the first times I've tried Pakistani food and it did not disappoint! The owner was more than happy to explain a few items on the menu for us, and even brought a tablet out to show us some pictures of the dishes. he triple checked our order to make sure we had everything we needed and even fixed a very small error with a smile on his face. I can't wait to see this place grow! The chicken cheese paratha was so good i wish we ordered 2! The sauce was very refreshing especially when added to the shami kabob roll. The mango tiramisu was SO DELICIOUS! A great twist to your classic tiramisu. He also gave us a sample of the house kashmiri thai..... knocked its out of the ballpark. For someone who doesn't like chai anything, that would definitely be on my next order.
google avatar

Andre G.

Yelp
I went there and they had given my order to someone else so I had to wait for 10 more minutes for them to remake my order. After that I started eating the fries that were average but I got the chicken roll and it was just not that good. It was fine but nothing special. I will probably not go here again.
google avatar

Katelyn R.

Yelp
I've eaten here twice now and both times have been blown away by how amazing it is. I'm usually the person who gets sketched out by a weird texture or piece of cartilage in meats and when I tell you their chicken bowl has the most flavorful, quality meat and is my favorite part, I'm dead serious. Go here. Now. It's amazing. I get the chicken bowl. No idea what they put in it but it's heaven.
google avatar

John E.

Yelp
Hinzis has become one of our regulars in the area. The food is great along with the service. Great vibe, great good...Keep it up team!
google avatar

Scott S.

Yelp
A solid, and delicious, addition to the Frederick food scene. Was getting taken out for the family, so I didn't really soak in the ambiance, but it's decorated nicely, with comfortable seats for those waiting to carry out. I ordered the Samosa Chaat, which is samosas covered in something really delicious. Also the weekend special Beef Muntus, which are fried dumplings and a big hit for the meat eaters in the family. Got an Aloo Paratha and a Chicken Paratha, as well as a Shami Kebab roll, all really good as well. Don't find anything that we ordered to be spicy hot, just delicious spices. Really glad I stopped in and will definitely be doing so again.
google avatar

Becky G.

Yelp
I'm so proud of Frederick everyday with more diverse food choices! Had a taste of Pakistan today and I loved it! Very cute atmosphere for a quick lunch. Super friendly husband/wife team that make everything from scratch daily! I'm impressed. I ordered a chicken kathi roll and the flatbread was made to order and perfect. Filling was great and a good spice level. Will return

A K.

Yelp
DELICIOUS!!! Heard amazing things about Hinzis Kitchen and just had to try it. Ordered the chicken rice bowl, paneer tikka rice bowl and chicken Kati roll. Loved everything. Will need to go back and try other dishes soon.

Sapana S.

Yelp
This place was so lovely. The food (I got the paneer tikka rice bowl) was amazing and very affordable. The young man at the counter was so kind and patient and helpful while I and my family figured out what we wanted. I'll definitely be back for more paneer tikka and to try the khati rolls. Lots of vegan options as well.

Maureen T.

Yelp
Fresh, delicious, very generous portions, chicken rice bowl, chicken gyro bowl, samosa chaat, were amazing, owners delightful...can't wait to go back!

Daniel L.

Yelp
I never leave reviews, but loved this place enough to actually tell people about it. 100% will be back. Went with a group of 4 and tried a bunch of stuff. Stars of the show were the samosa chaat, wings, and Chicken Karahi. The wings were super crispy and had great flavor. Very good. The chicken karahi was the bomb, just a tiny bit spicy, but not overwhelming at all. What was overwhelming was the flavor, and the chicken was nice and tender. Must try. The Kashmiri tea was also very good.

Matt S.

Yelp
Food is fantastic. Lovely people. A variety of bowls with different proteins. We had the gyro bowl. It was perfectly spiced and the white sauce is a perfect addition. Macha tea is worth the trip by itself.

Ariba S.

Yelp
Loved Hinzis Kitchen! The samosa chaat was so good and homemade! Definitely recommend for an authentic Pakistani taste! Loved the Kashmiri chai too Will definitely return for more dessert and food!
google avatar

Glenn B.

Yelp
Could be hotter (temperature) but great Vegan options. Seems more like a take out place but nice interiors

Julie E.

Yelp
Finally tried this place. I was not disappointed!. I got the chicken rice bowl, and it was excellent! I'll definitely go back.
google avatar

Chelsea N.

Yelp
My husband and I LOVE this cute, cafe-style, Pakistani restaurant. The chicken Kathi roll and Shami kabob roll are our favorites. Along with the Kashmiri Chai which is OUT OF THIS WORLD delicious! We have gone back multiple weekends in a row just for the chai and rolls. Owners are very friendly.

Alyssa P.

Yelp
Delicious food, great portions, and a really cute vibe inside the restaurant. I had the chicken rice bowl with a side of fries. Really great flavor and the shoestring fries were crispy and had a nice seasoning that was unique to most fries you can get around town.
google avatar

Connie K.

Yelp
Delicious Pakistani/Indian comfort-style food in a chic and welcoming storefront. The paratha rolls are warm, rich and flavorful! Parking is also easy. Will be back again.

Essjohnson J.

Yelp
Very, very good food! Glad Frederick is getting more diversity in cuisine options. The owner is friendly as well. I wasnt too familiar with Pakistan food and he gave me great recommendations and samples to try. I'll definitely be back......soon.
google avatar

Erin M.

Yelp
Such a great restaurant! The nicest people own the restaurant and the food is amazing. Definitely worth checking out if you are looking for Pakistani cuisine. Inside the restaurant has such a cute vibe and very fast service.

Michelle Z.

Yelp
Hinzi's is a total hidden gem in Frederick. It's casual/ takeout with a cute and clean interior, and of course the food is delicious! Give it a try and don't forget the sauces!!
google avatar

Christina W.

Yelp
A friend recommended this place to me and it was absolutely delicious. The owners are so nice and truly care about their customers. I cannot recommend this restaurant more the Dhaba Chicken Karahi and chicken rice bowl are dishes I wish I could eat on the daily.

Anam Y.

Yelp
Hinzi's kitchen had a such a warm and welcoming atmosphere! The staff were super friendly and had fast service! I highly recommend this place! The food was very flavorful and delicious! We tried a few different things off the menu. The papri chaat was rich and tangy topped with nice crispy papri! The dahi bhalla's were soft and the yogurt had a divine blast of flavours! We also had the chicken noodle bowl which gave us a nice spicy kick, but it was so good I couldn't stop eating it. After all that, desserts was a must! They all looked so delicious and mouth watering! I had to get multiple... the gulab jamun cupcake was super moist topped with a light and fluffy icing! My husband enjoyed the biscoff mousse cup, as it had a great twist on flavors and texture! Lastly, the Kashmiri chai was one of the best I've had so far!

Austin D.

Yelp
Truly excellent food. Service was quick and friendly. Dinning area nicely arranged and decorated. Great lunch spot for a quick bite. Cannot recommend higher and certainly will be back!

Simon T.

Yelp
What food in the containers I took home was quite tasty. It's just frustrating that this was priced as premium take out, and it turned out to be mostly white jasmine rice with a tiny bit of meat and sauce on it. Very tasty to be sure, but I wasn't expecting that level of cost cutting for the price I paid.

Danielle B.

Yelp
Food was amazing! Everything homemade! Great customer service! Excellent prices. Definition a must try!

Adam P.

Yelp
This place is terrific! Top notch service and delicious food. The Samosa Chaat side is a good place to start. Chicken rice bowl is a slightly spicy favorite. Plenty of vegetarian options. Also really tasty milk Chai.
