Upscale Japanese restaurant on Madison Ave. Has a great quality of fish. With a bar downstairs and upstairs it creates a nice atmosphere. Only if you reserve and sit at the bar can you get a chef’s combo menu, so if you are going for a prefix make sure to reserve ahead. We sat at the table. Food was delicious but if you have very hungry people this will not be enough or you need to order a few portions extra. Spicy tuna was very very spicy not the usual spicy tuna. All the portions are very small so was the desert, brownie with green tea ice cream. Wine as good. Service was excellent! Its a good but pricy restaurant.

I really wanted to like this place. The food was pretty fresh but those prices... Man...I expect amazing. The portions were somewhat small and we ended up seated in outdoor dining. While the tents were heated the hot food still got cold very quickly. I think that's the main reason the octopus and wagyu A5 for 55 bucks was lukewarm. The octopus was too tender, to the point of soggy/mushy. The black cod came out warm as well. I don't know... I'm sure this place could have been much better... Or maybe it usually is and we just caught them on a bad day. Give it a shot maybe you folks will have a better experience.

I love this restaurant! I have always had a great experience here. The food is delicious, and the service is great. The quality of fish is incredible too! Highly recommend.

We were excited to try this sushi restaurant and it was so disappointing. Ordered Chirashi bowl ($30)and what we got was a bowl of cubed fish pieces all marinated in soy sauce over old rice that was worse than what we would get from a bad Chinese restaurant. The rice was not fresh, all dried up, and we couldn't taste the fish but the soy sauce. This would've been a bad $10 poke bowl if anything. I can't believe they are selling this as a $30 chirashi bowl. As an avid sushi lover, this is truly unacceptable quality food. Please save yourself from going to this restaurant.

Google
An excellent addition to the neighborhood, which has lacked a high-quality sushi restaurant. The service is exceedingly attentive. The food quality is very high. The restaurant itself has clearly undergone a full interior renovation and looks great. Would highly recommend.

AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My friends and I were looking forward to trying this new restaurant. Form the inside and outside it looks very upscale and we were expecting a good meal. On Friday night, they ran out of rice and with our food they gave us cold and terrible Indian rice from the restaurant next door. With the chicken teriyaki platter it was supposed to come with miso soup, sushi rice, and a salad. AFTER AN HOUR AND A HALF of waiting we were served overcooked chicken drowned with sauce, no miso soup, a sad excuse for a salad. We also had ordered a sushi roll that was never given to us. We tried to leave before the food arrived as we were sitting there for an hour with nothing on the table. The restaurant refused to comp the meal after no-one ate their food. Unacceptable for a restaurant on the upper east side to provide such a poor experience on a FRIDAY NIGHT! My friends and I will be sure to tell others in this neighborhood to ignore this restaurant. A WASTE OF MONEY AND TIME. DO NOT GO!

Google
Horrible experience. Waited an hour and a half for an incomplete Chicken Teriyaki. Miso soup didn’t come and the cold, undercooked rice was in a small bowl from the Indian restaurant next door. Treated very poorly. Thought I was going to a nice sushi place with my friends on a Friday evening but it ended up ruining the evening.

Google
We had two nigiri, a roll, a yuzu avocado salad, some wine, on a Monday. All really very good and priced accordingly. Server friendly with no particular knowledge of sushi. Playlist awkwardly loud M.I.A., TLC etc., made the place feel kinda fast food despite the elegant interior but whatever

Yelp
I had a crazy good time here at Hiramasa. The food is just crazy good too! The service is just professional and diligent too! The ambiance is really good also. 5 stars definitely.

Yelp
ORIGIN: Hiramasa opened its doors in fall 2021. LOCATION; Hiramasa is located on corner of Madison and East 93rd Street. CONCEPT: The restaurant primarily serves traditional sushi through bar seating. This allows customers to see the craft of sushi master. AMBIANCE: The interior of the restaurant complements the dishes served, with pale wood-lined walls, black marble tiled floors, and relaxing music. The restaurant is like entering a jewelry box -- the jewels being the glistening fish served on glazed plates. Space is limited, with seating for 9 at the sushi bar at ground level, with more available in an upstairs loft (3 cafe tables and another sushi bar that seats 6). For someone who was in the area to accompany a friend whose husband was undergoing heart surgery, Hiramasa during opening at weekday lunch hour proved to be an oasis from the bustle and noise of the hospital waiting area. FOOD: I was initially drawn to the restaurant by the cheerful festoon of lanterns on its awning, as well as the need to rectify my experience of sushi after bravely trying a container of prepared sushi roll in the Mount Sinai lobby. I ordered a salmon hand roll, and enjoyed the crisp crunch of the dried seaweed and quality of the salmon. An eel roll was tasty as well, although less traditional with the addition of sauces and avocado. (I recommend sticking to traditional sushi to fully enjoy the quality of fish served, as the "specialty" rolls blur the taste of fish.) I also tried the miso soup, which appeared to incorporate a different type of miso paste than I had previously experienced. SERVICE: Service was patient and attentive, especially as we had restaurant to ourselves! TIP: A curbside enclosure with cloth-lined tables allows extended seating. Since the majority of seating inside the restaurant is bar side, large groups may prefer this option. Since the restaurant's interior is unusually small, one plus is that the upstairs loft and/or ground level can be fully reserved for events. Bathroom is upstairs.

Yelp
A+ sushi and experience, in particular at the counter. Best in the UES. Highly recommend!

Yelp
The food was SO good, the ambiance/interior was incredible and the staff were very friendly. I will be back!

Yelp
A pretty bad experience over all, server was not very quick at service, didn't give separate plates, charged me $12 for a simple bottle of water, food itself was mid. Only reason it's not a 1 star is the pretty place is pretty cozy and warm. Although the cleanup rate is bad.

Yelp
I'm not sure what happened to this place but the previous chef needs to come back. This used to be my favorite place to dine with my daughter and the sushi is not dry and horrible. The shrimp tempura is now 1/3 of the size as before. Please let us know when the old chef returns.

Yelp
Lovely food and service. And the outdoor "sidewalk shed" is comically nice--they call it "the chalet."

Yelp
Unequivocally the best sushi in the upper east side. Ever since moving here, I have been to too many "alright" sushi spots, with none wowing me. Hiramasa did. From the ambiance to the service to the freshness of the fish to the expertise of our sushi chef Isaac, everything about Hiramasa was A+. I would recommend traveling here even if you aren't in the area; the experience is that good.

Yelp
Was so hoping this place was going to live up to the reviews on Yelp. To start with the positive, the service and hospitality were very good. The staff tries hard to make you comfortable and is most accommodating. But the quality of the food is extremely poor and the preparation is dismal. The space is very small and the place is awkward and is not comfortable to enjoy a meal there. They have a great location. Too bad the execution is so poorly done. It was far too cold to sit outside when we were there so can't comment on the outside space.

Yelp
We arrived at 8:20 for an 8:30 reservation. We were told the sushi bar for our $400 omakase meal was full and to walk down the block to a bar and come back at 8:40. We returned, and they still didn't have our spots ready. The waiter asked to seat us in the "chalet" which I assumed was a separate part of the restaurant. It was... it was outside on Valentine's day in February. It was cold. My date said it was OK and tried to assuage my embarrassment. The food was excellent, but the plates seemed to come with random long pauses. The waiters kept leaving the door to the chalet open. I had to keep rising to close it. My date and I were dining in our coats. To their credit, the waiters recognized their failure and provided me with Yuzu sake. My pregnant date couldn't drink it. They had no caffeine or alcohol-free beverages for her. At least the food was good, and the waiters were cognizant of the problem. This was not an omakase experience. This was not seeing the sushi prepared at the bar and having the piece explained to you. I can't believe I paid 400 dollars only to embarrass myself. 3/10 stars.

Yelp
Are at the bar .. One of the most delicious and authentic Japanese meals I have had! Excellent Wagyu and sushi Highly recommend

Yelp
Loving Japanese food, especially sashimi & sushi, my husband & I first didn't want to go to Hiramasa in our neighborhood since the owner who I believe is Italian owns an Italian next door (Vicolina). However my husband one evening tried Hiramasa, sitting at the sushi bar & liked it (I was out of town). Last week my husband invited me; we sat at the sushi bar & had a delicious dinner. Uni tasting ($ 65) each, agedashi dofu, cold tasting items etc.. The 3 chefs were not Japanese but the food was very good. Nice atmosphere. tonight is another experienice. My husband is out of town & I decided to have dinner at the Sushi Bar. The 3 chefs are not the same that last week; was told that they "rotate". Extremely noisy, loud music and loud people at the bar. Friday night perhaps? Just difficult to enjoy the food.., not fair for me or the chefs... Tonight the hostess/waitress is very loud herself; nothing to do with a traditional Japanese hostess. She calls me "love" ?? Hate it... i suppose you have to come early & during mid week. too bad because the fish is very fresh, food delicious. Ambience is not fair to the good chefs

Gabriel W.

Yelp
this place was amazing!! the hostess told me and my fiancé that it was recently remodeled and the place is so lovely. very warm and cozy ambiance and the food and service was spectacular. we specially were fans of the brussel sprouts and the dragon roll. no complaints would recommend!

Jake M.

Yelp
Outstanding, probably best sushi I've ever had in my life, service was impeccable, I got to meet the chefs Issac and scott and watch them make the food at the bar. Eli was the waiter who knew his stuff and was great! Going back!

Aaron M.

Yelp
Very pleasantly surprised by the quality of the Omakase. The chef was very personable and made the evening fun. The fish is as good as any of the top place. Will be back for sure

Claudia M.

Yelp
Love this new gem on the upper east side! Excellent sushi and omakase, as well as cooked options. Very special place. We plan to come often!!!

Gideon Y.

Yelp
catastrophic. The tempura (veg &fish) felt like mushy fish&chips (the fish part even came in a paper bag ...) The salmon was smoked. Expensive, but not good. Spoiled my wife's birthday dinner; A $3.50 (sic!) cupcake partly saved the day. P.S. It was a delivery order. Arrived earlier than the time we asked for; made me delay my after-gym shower, so as not to eat cold hot food.

Yelp
This place was pretty amazing, from the food to the atmosphere. The whole experience from start to finish was great and the service was excellent. A must try if you're in NYC.

Yelp
The Grand Omakase was fabulous, and by NY omakase prices, quite reasonable. The fish was exquisite, and while some of the preparations were quite traditional, many were strongly influenced by the chef's Peruvian heritage. And his tamago was divine--as good as I've ever had in Tokyo.
