I came to Hires Big H hungry and left... still hungry and $18 poorer. For that price, I thought I was ordering a deluxe burger combo with a side of stock options. Instead, I got a burger that looked like it was made for a toddler on a diet. I’ve seen sliders with more confidence. As for the ketchup situation, WOW. I asked for extra and you’d think I requested access to a bank safe. The waitress handed me a single, world's smallest sample like it was part of her personal rations during the apocalypse. I’ve seen people be more generous with their Netflix passwords. I ended up rationing it across my fries like I was playing some sad condiment version of “Survivor.”

Extremely poor experience on all sides of the house. Food itself is nothing to write home about. Cheeseburger looks as though it was slapped together, had little to no flavor, and was drowned in ketchup. The root beer, which seems to be this locations’s claim to fame, was extremely weak. It’s more akin to soda water with a couple drops of syrup. Came with a few of the mates and the waitress repeatedly got our orders wrong. Never got the waters we asked for, couple of meals were missing fries, some got onion rings instead of fries, and my burger didn’t come with mustard like the menu advertised. The prices are outrageous for the quality of the food and service our group received. Charging $8 for my sad cheeseburger ought to be a crime, as it’s nothing short of highway robbery. If you’re in the mood for a burger and fries, you’re better off going to another place that’s half the price but twice the food and twice the flavor.

😒 They Put the Grr in Burger We visited Hires Big H today (400 S 700 E) hoping to share a nice meal. Unfortunately, our experience was anything but. We started by ordering a Golden Veggie H burger, which includes a small order of onion rings (as shown on the menu). The carhop informed us they only offered one size of onion rings, so we said ok. We then asked for the burger to be cut in half since we were sharing. The carhop read the order back correctly, and we thought all was clear. However, what we received was a sad little sandwich of only cheese, lettuce, and tomato on a bun, though it was cut in half as requested. My husband went to the carhop entrance to tell the kitchen. After a significant wait, a woman who appeared to be a manager came to our car. We explained the issue, and after another considerable wait, she returned with what seemed to be our correct burger. When my husband reminded her we'd asked for it to be cut in half—I saw her SNATCH the burger from his hand— and storm off without a word. She eventually returned with the halved burger, but at that point, we'd lost our appetite due to her incredibly rude attitude. My husband told her we no longer wanted the meal, explaining it was "because of your attitude." The manager then said “It’s not you”, so while we were disappointed and shocked by the manager's behavior, I suddenly felt badly for her—the carhop didn’t seem to know the menu and the kitchen who let the order be delivered without the main ingredient— I realize everyone has difficult days, and ours and theirs converged today. We’ve been going there for years; I’m probably more willing than my husband to go again, but not any time soon.

Great classic burger and fries! I can’t believe this place is still around. My husband grew up eating here when he was just a little kid. He says the quality hasn’t changed much either, and the food is still delicious.

Google
Fantastic burger joint! Their Big H Country and pastrami burgers were delicious and very flavorful, although the bun was a little dry. Their cheese fries are definitely the way to go, but regular fries are also delicious. They’re cut fresh in the morning and the cheese fries are real shredded cheese, baked in an oven. None of that fake cheese shoved in a microwave crap. Our server was great- attentive but not annoying and she was proactive with refills of the incredible frosted root beer drinks. You can taste the flavor and individual spices in the home brewed root beer. Delicious!! Cherry lime aid was way too sweet.

Google
I lovedddd the frozen root beer float! Every time I go to Utah I try and stop by and get one. If you want a classic old school and family friendly vibe with amazing prices this is the place to go!

Google
Vintage diner feel but the service was not great. We had to ask server to come back when we were ready to order. Burgers were OK, nothing to write home about. Reuben sandwich was delicious and crave-able though! Kids' meal came with fries and a small drink but the cheeseburger was puny and mediocre. Root beer in a cold mug was delicious and nostalgic. Portions were ok for adult meals. Prices were well above average. Combo deals add almost 8 bucks to your meal price for fries and a drink! I would not go out of my way to go here again.

Google
It defines feels like being transported to another era. The food is good, and root beer service friendly. I would absolutely recommended going here if you’re looking for a good old fashioned burger and some killer root beer. The frosted mugs make it all the more refreshing and are a really nice touch.

Yelp
My husband brought me a Big H I requested. I am in a long term care facility and I was craving a Big H. It was juicy and the bun was great. Didn't disappoint. Best hamburger and onion rings in Salt Lake. It's not too large-just the right size!
google avatar

Yelp
Ok, for me, Hires Big H is all about the root beer and theirs is five star! This place is hopping and is always packed from wall to wall. This root beer float was insane! And if you can't take the full leaded root beer, they actually have a diet version of their crafted libations. I've never made root beer at home before (I know some who have), but they have their extract so you skilled makers can make as much as you want. Let me know when you and I'll be there.

Yelp
So devastating. I had been coming here for years and always loved it. We moved to Chicago and came back to visit family and this time the burgers were small, the kids meal was pathetic - - there was nothing on the burger and I had a triple patty and was still hungry after all was said and done. Over $100 for four adults and a kid - - what is the world coming to!

Louis W.

Yelp
Big H! Definitely not competing on a "fast food" track! Big menu, high prices! In my opinion, I don't think their burgers are that great, just so-so. Crown Burger would have been a better choice for the Daybreak location.

Robert F.

Yelp
Food is mediocre...Close too damn early....8 pm? That's just bad for business. Rootbeer is nothing fancy...you can make it at home.
google avatar

Cody B.

Yelp
This place has really gone down hill. We used to love Hires. Now we go and spend $50 for food that is on par with fast food. Incredibly pricy and food quality has gone way down

Yelp
Why do I keep coming here? The carhop server took our order, and we ordered three main entrees, large drinks, and sides. She said that fry sauce does not come with the order because we didn't say that we wanted it in a combo. Ironically, we had said that one of the orders is a combo, so should this whole order not intuitively be put in a combo? Or the server could have clarified if we wanted the order as a combo, but she didn't. Before she left to put our order into the kitchen, I asked her if fry sauce comes with the combos (using that word exactly), and she told me no and that they never have. I knew this was wrong, so I ran inside to ask the inside servers to confirmed that the fry sauces DO come with combos. Of course, I've been to other restaurants where the server asks if we want to upgrade to a combo to save money. That type of quality service does not happen here. I'm so unimpressed. We were missing an item when the food came out, and she had to run back and get it. The food is run of the mill, nothing special. The ambiance is a small diner. It's better to eat in your car or at home to avoid screaming kids running around. Ready for the price on the receipt of one Ruben, one grilled ham and cheese, one chili cheese dog, fries, onion rings and drinks? This order came to a total of $65.64. This place is truly a rip off. There is nothing that this place offers but poor service and mediocre food, leaving me disappointed and frustrated with every visit.

Yelp
I had mushroom burger small vanilla shake and fries .. husband had the chili cheese hot dog, Big H burger fries and drink .. portions were good but not for the price. Taste was awesome. Burgers were fresh close to in and out but to me this place was better, again .. just not the price. Fries were cut fresh same day I can tell. Milkshake was house made and real ice cream. Would come back again - mushroom burger was the best out of all the meals this was agreed upon with me and hubby. Surprising that my husband could not start on his hot dog meal that's how large the portions were because he can usually eat two plates this time he couldn't. Service was quick. Staff was very friendly. Place was nice and clean. Got there during lunch hour and even tho it was busy the service was great. Bathroom was really clean too! Would come back again but only for me and husband because it was almost 100$ just for 3 meals and drinks. Burgers do not come with drinks or fries you gotta pay extra. That's a bummer. If it would've been my whole family I'd be scared to think of the cost for a family of 5

Yelp
"Meh" -lindsey "Baaaaah" - keller "Laser show was better. Good ice." -tyler Overall, the vibes were quite good. We did show up 30 minutes before closing, and as I write this review it is 16 minutes passed closing. So please, take that into consideration as you read this. The fries were not really finished cooking, but they still were fries, which were what we ordered. Keller ordered a reuben that did take an extra 20 minutes on the counter to sit and contemplate life before being brought to the table with the rest of the food. Lil guy had first day jitters I guess. Cant tell if the fry sauce and the thousand island are different sauces, and that mystery is more intriguing than you'd think. Keeps me on my toes.

Yelp
Good food, not so great service. Never thought that I would be accused of dining and dashing. When I left my purse and unfinished chili cheese dog on the table. Sure my mistake that husband said i 'm going to the bathroom and me being pregnant thought oh me too. Thinking oh they won't clear the table my purse is here it's obvious i 'm not done with my meal. Well i come back to my husband being accused of dining and dashing. Our table cleared. And them dangling my purse saying you have to pay. Well sir we went to the bathroom. I was going to come back to finish my Coke and my chili. But guess not anymore. They didn't offer to give us another drink. Since they threw the one we had the table along with my unfinished chili dog. So now i 'm going home thinking about my unfinished chili dog. Thanks for ruining my day.

Yelp
We love Hires Big H. Their hamburgers aren't big and stacked like you'll see at other places but they are perfect. The perfect amount of meat, to bun ratio, perfect amount of lettuce and bacon, and perfect amount of special sauce. And everything blends so well together for a great flavor medley that you want in a great hamburger. My go to is the Country H which adds bacon, perfect. They also have one with grilled onions that I like. Their homemade root beer in a frosted mug, instead of ice, is a can't miss if you like cold root beer. Little pieces of frozen root beer from the mug. Hires has probably my second favorite hamburger in the valley, so good every time!

Yelp
*an extra half star for the being a SLC staple I would give this place 3.5 stars. The food is good but not life changing. They have so 'go-to' items like the Wester H and their frozen mug root beer. I orders a double H with onions rings. The onion rings were a little too much onion but not bad. You order at the counter and then food is brought to you. There was plenty of parking and the feel of the restaurant is classic diner style.

Yelp
Ambiance was cute and retro. The food LOOKED so good, but I ordered a root beer float which had a long red hair in it. (My hair is black and the waitresses hair was short and black) my partner asked the waitress if I could have a new one. She became defensive and said "Yeah show me the hair" I showed her as it was connected to the spoon. She proceeded to say "Yeah there was no way that was in there before but okay." She acted like I put the hair in there ??? So we left

Yelp
Hires is a staple in Salt Lake City. I went here today to try the fresh peach sundae with a Tagge's farm fresh peaches! It was delicious! I also love their root beer freezes, shakes and burgers. I usually dine in the restaurant that looks like an old diner. The service is friendly and fast unless they are busy. You know this place is good because it usually is busy! They also have car hops that will get you food right to your car to you. This is a fun place to have yummy food!

James T.

Yelp
Expensive. $93 with tip for 4 adults and one kid! And mine was only a burger with water. I feel suckered. If I go again it's because someone else that loves expensive nostalgia, sugar, and fat is paying. And only after they hear me recommend everything else. I appreciate the vegetarian options. I don't appreciate being up sold and pressured into tips.

Joe K.

Yelp
$57 for dinner, WTF!!!!!!?!?!?. $57 for two and a half meals which they didn't get correct! Been going to this place since the 1980s. Hires has spiraled to the basement since their founder, Don passed away. Our server was lazy; she leaned against a pilar while she took our order, and she didn't check on us after she delivered our food. The restaurant was a quarter full (hmm... a Friday evening before 8pm and the place wasn't busy) full. I had no desire to leave a tip (consistently tip 20-30%) and had no desire to interact with the staff. Dropped $60 on the table and left. Hires has lost a life-long customer and a good word of mouth. The food has gone way down hill as well. Never going back. SHM!!!!!

Yelp
We ordered from here for delivery. For what we received, everything was incredibly over priced. I ordered (3) Mountain Burgers, which is the Big H (quarter pound ground chuck hamburger garnished with fry sauce, lettuce, tomato and American cheese on a Big H bun) with mushrooms. Each burger was over $10, but it sure as hell wasn't worth the money. We ordered one order of onion rings that was just over $7 and was a single serving, and the fry sauce had to be ordered separately. It didn't come with any sauces and you have to pay for sauces separately ($0.64/each). The onion rings were decent, but they would have cost $5 at MOST anywhere else. I ordered my daughter a strawberry shake and we were surprised that it was the same size as a 12 oz can of soda! Especially since we paid over $8.50 for the mediocre shake. We knew it was expensive when we were ordering, but we were expecting the quality would be well worth the price. We were VERY WRONG! I could have bought 3 incredibly delicious burgers at Lucky 13 for a lot less money and we would have all been full and satisfied! Instead we were left still hungry. We won't be eating here again. EDIT: I know that since I ordered via a delivery service that prices are higher because the restaurants are charged by the delivery service as well. I may try this restaurant again in person in the future. However, I order for delivery A LOT and most of my meals are still delicious and satisfying. A majority of my reviews are based on delivery meals.

Yelp
Parking here is a challenge on a busy day so beware. We were greeted and seated quickly. Waitress gave us ample time to order. I ordered basic cheeseburger which was good. Wife got the turkey club with a side of cheese fries. Very tasty. Of course she got her chocolate malt which for her is the bread and butter. Kids meal hot dog was plenty good. Son ordered the country cheeseburger and said it was great. Kids cheeseburger and fries. The fries and sauce is what I enjoyed the most. It is a very noisy place so no quiet conversations.

Jane F.

Yelp
My sister brought me a Hires Big H. It was moist, the bun tasted like it was just baked and I was in seventh heaven. There is nothing like their hamburgers. The onion rings were just as good. I'm not able to get out so I would ask her again when I am hankering for another hamburger. Maybe I would ask for a caramel shake. Drive up is convenient.
google avatar

Julian M.

Yelp
Service was fast and food came quickly. The burger was delicious and full but not too messy. Fries were a little soft but great with their fry sauce.

Recquel F.

Yelp
Service was horrible! The whole staff was chilllin at the front register talking while I was needing a refill of water for a long time. I tried to get eye contact with our server, but she was having so much fun with the rest of the staff she didn't notice the one table they had. I then made a point and asked for some water from across the way. I am also a waitress and know how a waitress should act. They should be ashamed. So ridiculous. Kristina was the manager on duty and should know better how to manage her staff.
google avatar

Michael C.

Yelp
The root beer float must be had. Solid if not exceptional burgers and sides and I like the rare carhop vibe. Be extra generous with tips during windy or cold or rainy weather. They deliver outside in weather conditions that can suck.
google avatar

Jafey A.

Yelp
The service was very friendly, but a bit slow, refills were hard to come by. That being said, the food was pretty solid, great sandwiches, fries, and onion rings. My kid was a bit bummed her root beer didn't come in a frosty mug, but it was a neat restaurant to check out for the history and to simply see a blast from the past style restaurant.
google avatar

Chloe C.

Yelp
Hires is a SLC classic. Their burgers are amazing, always great quality service and great vibes.
google avatar

Bret M.

Yelp
The buns/bread are my favorite part, the fry sauce is great too. Food is always fresh and I like the service and atmosphere of the restaurant. It's one of my favorite places in Salt Lake.

Tim F.

Yelp
Great old school burger spot. Tastes just like you would expect - Lovely. Many sandwiches options, and reasonable pricing.

JD J.

Yelp
The service was not great, we got asked for what we wanted as soon as we sat down. After we ordered, there wasn't one of the elements and when we asked for it we got an extra charge when we didn't ask for it. The salted caramel shake wasn't so good as advertised and overall the experience was not great.
google avatar

Jamie N.

Yelp
Great hamburger. The place gets loud. We've been there a couple times and would recommend, however, don't go during school lunchtime. We had lunch on a Monday and it was like a high school cafeteria with screaming teenagers being teenagers.
google avatar

Ann L.

Yelp
We were very happy with Hires Big H. The food was delicious and our only regret was not getting 2 burgers instead of 1. It's a great drive in, where you park in a designated number spot, turn on your car lights and wait for someone to come out and take your order. Our waitress was friendly and helpful to give us recommendations for favorites. We ordered cheese fries since why not? A turkey club which was fine. And a delicious burger. The best part was the Oreo milk shake. Amazing way to end the meal! Thick and creamy, just what you expect at a drive in restaurant.
google avatar

Michelle N.

Yelp
Definitely not as good as I thought 4 years ago! Staff was great and very friendly. I remembered loving the Hawaiian burger years ago but I couldn't find it on the menu. The staff told me that they actually discontinued it but could still make me the burger which was so accommodating! Unfortunately, the food was incredibly underwhelming. Because they no longer had the large pineapple slices for the discontinued burger I wanted, they used mini pineapple pieces which didn't work very well. The lettuce wasn't very fresh and the bun was a bit soggy. The fries and the burger overall were mediocre at best, plus who likes to pay for fry sauce! I won't be coming back because of these reasons.
google avatar

Alina S.

Yelp
I've been to all the locations but the downtown location is my favorite Hires location. It's convenient and I don't think the food or service is bad. Usually it's not too crowded. They do have car hop and dine in but I prefer dining in. In deciding what to order I like ordering their cheeseburger with side of fries plus fry sauce. For drinks I always recommend getting the cherry limeade and the frosty mug of root beer.
google avatar

Tanner J.

Yelp
A Utah classic! When the fries are hot, they are some of the best you'll ever have. You HAVE to try the root beer, doesn't matter if it's in a freeze, a float, or just in a frosty mug. The burgers aren't incredible, but they are tasty. I'd recommend the patty melt because the toast is better than the regular buns. The diner feel is great!
google avatar

Yelp
I think I'll sum this one up as "next level yum yums." And I didn't have to leave my car. This place has been around forever. People that ate here as teens have already died of old age. Think about that. It was so good people died with a smile on their face having eaten a buger and root beer here. Same menu. Same quality. Same everything. It's like your favorite undies. Why change what already works? I've noticed that a couple non-locals say it's overpriced. To them I say, go eat off the McDonalds dollar menu. Better yet get some McNuggies in a happy meal. The sophisticated customer knows you can't chince on good food. This place is worth paying for....and it really isn't expensive...unless you were hoping to use your tip money from Taco John's.

M S.

Yelp
I always love to support a local spot , being newer to area I had a lot of hope and was excited. I figured it's been around so long it HAS to be above average with good value My burger was average and by average I mean very very normal, nothing to set it above. 15.5 for a burger, fries and soda is pretty AWFUL . I can get the same thing at In and Out for 10 Service was fair, the lady didn't seem to know the menu which is always fun As I waited for my food I decided to pull out my calculator. NOTHING is more annoying then adding 3 items (burger fries and sodas) separately and them equaling less then the advertised combo price
google avatar

Karen F.

Yelp
This is a place that is always fun to eat at. I ordered the hires big h and fries with fry sauce. My sil had the veggie burger and she liked it too. When I'm downtown, this is a burger place that is a good go to. It's busy but the staff get food out quickly. Everyone there is friendly.
google avatar

Cortney M.

Yelp
Food was great! No complaints there The two older ladies working this Monday after Christmas, we're by far the rudest people I have come across In Utah. Being a waitress myself for years, I don't have tolerance for this. One lady almost hit my little two year in the face with her food. Then the lady who took our order messed up( which i have done and that's not the problem) but the attitude that came with us asking where my food was, was the problem. We didn't tip- which I don't ever do, but we couldn't believe how rude they both were. Also- i have worked at a small family owned restaurant that is a tourist attraction- so I understand how the rush and it being busy can sometimes be frustrating- but it wasn't too busy. Also, the busier- the more money! So be nice!!! Might return and do the car service option To the owner who cashed us out- I'm sorry for the no tip, but hire people who are nice and who actually want to be there!
google avatar

Yelp
Omg I've been coming here since I was younger and this is the absolute worst experience I've ever had. Food was gross, service was terrible and the vibe sucked. Going to miss coming here.

Yelp
I have been to Hires Big H total of 2 times. First time I went good was okay, burger tasted better than fast food. But I sure hope it would be better than fast food do to the high prices! I think what made we okay to go back was the services I received was good quality. The second time were I spent $40 bucks on the 2 burgers, basket of cheese fries and a kids meal made me not want to go back at all. Manager was friendly, but my waiter seem not to care about us at all! I was say it was because it was super busy but it wasn't on my said there was a total of 6 people (counting myself and the wife) on the other side 5. (There were 2 servers) when ours would go to our side would ask the other tables if there was anything she could do, refills etc. but us nope saw our waiter 2 times first time to take our order and the second to drop off the food. ( I had to say it but she might have assumed we would not be tipping or a race thing cuz the other people on our side were caucasian, well we were a family of Latinos idk). Normally I tip really will above 20% when I eat at restaurants since I worked in positions where tips was the income but when I have to go ask for refills at the front and ask for boxes at the front. Etc. yay sorry no I did not tip, which I have now done a total of 3 times in my life. I would recommend the habit burger or crown burger is anyone is wanting a burger outside fast food. Food and service will be way better!

Yelp
Is this place 5 stars? No, a 5 star burger place is very rare. Is it 3? No, 3 is average. So this place is 4. I've been coming to Hire's since I was little. We lived in Vegas, and anytime we came to SLC, we always are at Hire's. Their root beer is great, their burger are great, their onion rings are great, their fries are not so great. It sucks they charge for extra fry sauce, but I get it, a man's gotta eat, and you don't eat by giving away loads of fry sauce. The fry sauce is good though. It's a wee bit expensive, and the portions are incredibly big, but the food is good, great quality. I always get the Western H. Don't get the fries, get the rings and a root beer, and buy an extra fry sauce.
google avatar

Anna H.

Yelp
This place is so fun! I had heard about it for a long time and have been wanting to try it. The milkshake was SO good! We got raspberry Oreo (shared one with a friend) and it was so worth it. Delish! We even got little chunks of Oreo in it which is always the best part. My burger (avocado country H, I added the avocado as an extra) was really tasty! I love how big the buns are, and that they put fry sauce in the burger. I actually didn't even feel like I needed extra sauce on my burger (I am a huge sauce person)! The only reason why I gave this place 4 stars instead of 5 was because of the fries. The fries were really greasy (but not in the McDonald's kind of way) and didn't have very much flavor. So I'm definitely coming back, but I'll skip the fries and just order a burger and a shake!

Liz M.

Yelp
Hires Big H is not my go-to burger spot in SLC. I wouldn't say their burgers are bad, but they are also not great. Just so-so.
google avatar

Patrick S.

Yelp
Wow I love this place. BIg H combo with root beer in a mug please!! Buns are so fresh and delicious. Burger tastes like it was never frozen. Fresh lettuce. Fry Sauce!! Onion rings that are homemade and special. Quick service too. Sit anywhere you want! Love this place. Don't get to come here often but when I do it's always just right.
google avatar

Holly A.

Yelp
Burgers are so good here. I don't know what they do to their burgers but they taste to darn good. The fries are kinda meh to me not their fault I just like really crispy fries. However let's talk about the colossal onion rings for a sec because they are OMG good. Someone at work told me they are the ones that invented the fry sauce to. The food was so good I didn't snap photos. Next time I go I will take a pic. My combo and a side of onion rings came to almost 18.00 so....not the cheapest meal in the world but def worth trying and I will be back because it looks like they have a pretty big menu as well.
google avatar

Bryant G.

Yelp
Rebecca was so accommodating and took great care and enjoyed our conversation. Appreciate the wonderful food prepared. You just don't find restaurants like Hires anymore. Had to drive 600 miles today to have the hand cut fries and grilled chicken sandwich. Love the tuna and have that ready for my trip back In the morning. Back in the 1980s we printed Hires menus. Great times and still amazing food 35 plus year later!!!! Thank you Hires. Keep bringing the great food to Utah!!!

Frank M.

Yelp
Best onion rings in SLC: homemade, tasty and large-not strings. Burgers are definitely above average. Prompt table service. No overhead cover if you use carhop service. This place is an institution, very well known.

Yelp

Yelp
I have only gone here once and the burger was terrible and looked uncooked. The only thing I would recommend from the menu is their smoothies.

Yelp
Overall impression: Great diner/drive-inn type of place. Old school. And the food was good. Lots of menu items too. Average price: $7-12 I just love the ambience of this place. It has that old school diner/drive in burger place feel. They're super busy because, honestly, they're just good. You can either eat inside (if you can find a seat) or pull up in your car and they will service you. Tons of stuff on the menu but the specialties are the onion rings, shakes, fry sauce, and burgers. Very customizable options too. Only issue is the wait for the food, which isn't too bad but it's a bit long for a burger place but would attribute this to them being so busy. I would come to this place at about 9-11pm to hang out with some friends on a Friday or Saturday night. Definitely a go-to in Salt Lake City.

Yelp
This place has pretty good burgers but they are a little small. They sure are tasty though. They have been around for so long they got their service down to a science. I love the car hop style of being able to order from your car and they bring it to you. The ice cream is straight fire and my fav thing about this place. Would recommend 7.5/10
