"Hiro Japanese Restaurant offers some of the freshest sushi in the city, featuring premium cuts like Chu toro (medium fatty tuna), saltwater eel, and salmon. For an immersive dining experience, the restaurant provides a 16-course Omakase dinner, available by reservation only, serving a variety of surprise dishes. Beyond sushi, diners can enjoy hibachi dinners, noodle bowls, and rice bowls. A highlight is the chicken katsu curry, combining crispy fried chicken with creamy curry sauce over rice, perfect for curry lovers." - Megan duBois

Google
We had the pleasure of dining at Hiro Japanese Restaurant today and were extremely impressed. The cuisine was exceptional in every way. The sashimi was flavorful and the salmon simply melted in my mouth. The chef's presentation was impeccable (as you can see 🙃). The Katsu Chicken Curry and my Nabeyaki Udon were both delicious. We can’t wait to go back. We enjoyed chatting with the chef who was kind/personable and answered any questions I had.

Google
If you’re looking for a delicious sushi spot, this is the place to go! My boyfriend and I have come a few times now, and the service and food has been wonderful each time. We had the sushi lunch set during our most recent visit, and it’s a great deal. Very reasonable prices and a very friendly staff.

David Kasian

Google
Moved to the Jacksonville area within the past year and have searched and tried for truly good sushi (both raw and cooked) and I can hands down say this place is fantastic. Authentic flavors, healthy portions, and a relaxing atmosphere, topped off by very pleasant and friendly staff. I've found my new go-to!

Bo

Google
Very good and quick service and delicious food, we accidentally drove into the shopping center and found this gem of a place. Definitely recommend and the dons are so good! So are the sushi.

Nikita Thakor

Google
This place is seriously amazing!!! The service was so good—everyone was super friendly and made us feel right at home. The fatty tuna hand roll was insane!! It was buttery, super fresh, and just melts in your mouth. Honestly one of the best I’ve had. Everything we ordered was great, but the tuna stole the show. I’ll definitely be coming back!!

Jimmy Clark

Google
Such a great experience. The sushi was awesome. A great experience with very authentic Japanese sushi. Do not miss out on the chance to eat here.

Erik R

Google
Such a treat to sit at the bar with my youngest daughter and go toe to toe. Variety of fish is great, and the quality is some of the best in the area.

Gabrielle Prieto

Google
Outstanding service and quality Japanese food. I’ve never finished a bowl of unagi don so fast—the delicious flavor melted in my mouth and has necessitated a future trip back to this lovely place. Loved the okonomiyaki too!

Yelp
Hidden gem. New go-to sushi spot. Favorites from the table were the grilled gyoza and the sushi entree (10pcs+chef's roll). Very fresh, very affordable, and great atmosphere. Highly recommend.

Garry S.

Yelp
Got carry out and the sushi was fine but the side orders of fried rice were mushy and looked more like oatmeal. It was clear it had been sitting in a rice cook or other container all day. We returned the fried rice and got a credit but the manager on duty didn't seem happy about it. If you can't get fried rice right, then I don't know.

Raynelle S.

Yelp
This is my first time here and I will definitely come back! I had the NY steak hibachi with fried rice, stir fried noodles, and veggies. The steak was perfectly cooked, tender, and flavorful. The noodles and fired rice were seasoned well and the veggies were fresh.

Jesika K.

Yelp
This place is so cute and cozy. The food is so fresh and on point with flavor. We had great service and we 100% will be back. We went a little ham on our orders but there were too many options. I opted for the lunch teppanyaki salmon with veggies, sweet potato fries and clear soup. I also ordered the lunch sushi special with the salmon skin roll and eel cucumber roll. I've been struggling to find sushi up to my west coast standards and this place is the closest I have gotten. See you again soon!

Thea N.

Yelp
Absolutely one of the best sushi restaurants in town. The place is simple and cozy, the staff very attentive, and the food is simple, but exquisite.

Amarilys T.

Yelp
It's my aunt's bday weekend and my cousin just arrived from NC so we wanted a cute place to eat: I found them on Yelp of course, they got me with their reviews and scoring. We arrived around almost 9pm and no one was there, it's a Friday and then close at 10pm. From the moment we walked in we had excellent service. From the hostess to the waiters, sushi chef and even the manager! The level of attentiveness, efficiency, the quality was all excellent. We were famished so ate a little of everything; from 2 sushi rolls to calamari, to sashimi, to some delicious fried chicken they gave us on the house and even gave us fried Oreos and fried cake and sang my aunt happy bday! They were so nice and make the us feel very welcome for our first time here. I'll definitely be back. Especially since it's so close to my house. I fully recommend.. You'll thank me later.

Yelp
We were looking for a new sushi place to try and since this place has really good reviews, we were excited to give it a try. Wow! What a disappointment!!! The restaurant is pretty small and when we got there, there were only us and another table of two. We sat there for a while and finally ordered. When we looked at the sushi menu, we thought it was pretty expensive but if the food is good, totally worth it we thought. Then the food came, the fish on nigiri pieces were so small and weren't cut nicely especially for how much they're charging. The sushi rolls were just ok. Totally not worth the money and the drive. We will not be coming back

Yelp
What a great location, wonderful sushi, crystal clear interior, and fantastic service. Really a great find for our Sunday after church lunch and easy parking is also a big plus. The sushi chef came over to our table and explained that he was trained in Tokyo and had only been in the US for a few months. We may be biased, but we hope he stays. Also, for those of you who like their rolls tightly wrapped, I did not have a problem with mine. Also loved the little things, like the chopstick holder for each person at the table and real chopsticks, not the disposable time. Kudos for the two rolls for $9.99 special every day of the week. (Even Sundays). Most sushi locations will not honor a special like that on Sundays. But you want to hear about the food: Side Salad - good and fresh, they don't the salad with dressing and instead put it on the side. So you can still soak it if you want. Seaweed Salad - served on top of sliced cucumber, it was good. Philadelphia Roll - got rave reviews from our table. Alaska Roll - one of my personal favorites. Sweet Potato Roll - a family favorite and this was do well done. Maybe top it with some eel sauce, but that may just be personal preference. Shrimp Tempura - pretty standard, but we'll executed. Spicy Tuna - paired well with the sweet potato roll, a little sweet and a little spice. Baymeadows Roll - this was in the category of "let's try something" which we all shared and guess what, it was PERFECTION. Really a delicious roll. Also like that the menu specified how many pieces you get with each roll. ONE BIG COMPLAINT. Iced tea was not all you could drink, which is pretty standard in the South. Also, salad or soup is not included with the two roll special, also pretty standard in the South. I hope they rethink both of those policies in the future.

Yelp
Such a great spot! It's rare to find a real deal Japanese restaurant in Jax, so I couldn't contain my excitement to find that this was one! We came in around lunchtime as a party of 11, and had such a great experience. A friend that frequently visits Japan found this spot, so we had to give it a try. The service was great, and both flavor and quality of the food was amazing. We ordered a couple of sushi rolls from the lunch menu, as well as the chicken katsu don and the karaage bento box. We liked how the bento box comes accompanied with tuna and salmon sushi, in addition to the regular California roll and salad. The chicken katsu don was perfectly cooked and was a large enough portion for me to take some home, even with it being the lunch portion. Although a shrimp tempura roll is super basic, you could really taste the flavor and quality of the tempura, which makes me want to give some more of the tempura entrees/appetizers a try next time. I really want to try the ramen and udon next time, and will update the review once we do!

Candace H.

Yelp
I was craving sushi so we went to a close by spot - Hiro - and NOT disappointed. Sushi was high quality and delicious. We were surprised with tempura Oreos, very kind. Delicious food and service was great. Recommend!

Brandon D.

Yelp
We finally found a Japanese restaurant with a Japanese chef and actual Japanese food in Jacksonville. Everything we ordered were amazing and my family and I can't wait to go back. Excellent customer service as well, so definitely a 5 star review for me.

Austin Y.

Yelp
Best sushi in Jacksonville. You can taste the difference in the spicy tuna roll that makes you realize everyone else uses the same wholesale products. The atmosphere and chefs are above and beyond and they value your business. I cant speak highly enough.

Charis W.

Yelp
Really great sushi restaurant with 5-star hospitality! They have a very extensive menu full of authentic Japanese dishes and American Japanese favorites. We ordered four rolls, and they were all great, as well as the tempura combination and oyster fry. I think everything was a bit overpriced. We were served deep fried tempura Oreos for dessert on the house. Overall great experience.

Mikey M.

Yelp
Excellent Sushi, fresh and flavorful. Professional and friendly service, it's evident that the management truly cares about the customer experience. Ambiance is upscale, it feels like a little piece of Japan. Hiro is a hidden gem within baymeadows.

Amy S.

Yelp
This is by far the worst sushi and hibachi we have ever had. We ordered a spicy tuna roll, a spicy salmon roll, a tuna avocado roll, and a chicken hibachi which comes with 3 sides. We got a side salad with ginger dresser, veggies (only broccoli and zucchini) and a clear soup. The sushi tasted like it was from the Publix next door and they don't even provide wasabi which was a first for me. The hibachi chicken was alright but the veggies were actually squash, broccoli and onions which we asked for no onions as well. The salad was a quarter of a normal side salad (see photo) and the dressing was watery. Rice or noddles were not included which was another first for me. Yes, we knew it came with three sides but we assumed rice would be included as neither of us have ever had hibachi without rice and we are weekly sushi people. All of this was $41.00 which is pretty average for our normal order at our old place. We moved over to E Town and unfortunately, we do not have a near by sushi spot yet so we decided to give Hiro a try and we were very disappointed. When we called to advise them of our experience (I'm not one to normally do this as I had worked in the food industry in the past and understand there can be bad days) all they offered and had to say was they would refund the salad. We will not be returning customers and hope they take this review into consideration and make some changes with their food and their service to customers.

Dashia D.

Yelp
Oh my goodness. This little gem was absolutely amazing. I haven't had sushi this good and well prepared since Sugarfish Beverly Hills. Hiro truly cares and made our first experience memorable, as we sat at his sushi bar. I couldn't believe this place wasn't packed. Only thing I would recommend, is letting us know the tiny thing of sake was $42... a huge sticker price shock at the bill from that. Other than that, it was fantastic!

Kimberly R.

Yelp
Spending the week here in Jax and wanted to try as many of the small local business' a try. Reviews were great in this one so we decided to go. Conveniently located in a Publix plaza so plenty of parking. Super clean restaurant. Small inside but really perfect for a hole in the wall. Greeted right away and seated just as quickly. Menu has many options not just sushi, but we were here for the sushi. We ordered edamame, and 4 different rolls. Absolutely delish! Prices were great too. Left nice and full and overall a great local experience. Staff, ambiance, food were all excellent and deserving of this high rating

Menette I.

Yelp
New sushi spot off Baymeadows and 295. The sushi is fresh and delicious. We also tried the hamachi Kama (grilled yellowtail collar), also delicious! They have lunch specials and Thursdays is ladies day, buy one get one.

Dorothy C.

Yelp
Japanese sushi chef. Excellent sushi Food from the kitchen and service is just okay. Only one server during busy lunch hour. No refills on soft drinks (soda). I got charged for a refill on a soda machine?!?

Annette S.

Yelp
Just went here for the first time for lunch break and got the Alaskan roll and pink lemonade. It was ready the minute I got in (online order). The young woman up front was extremely kind and had a big smile on her face. The food was also very delish

Stephanie L.

Yelp
A few weeks ago, my mother and her friend wanted to go to a Sushi restaurant so my mom did some searching for a good restaurant. The usual restaurants that she goes to, kind of went down hill and she was in search of a new sushi place! BINGO! She found a great hidden gem!! So today, after some retail therapy, she took me to her now FAVORITE MUST GO sushi place. This place is family owned and operated! You see the chef making your sushi as you sit in this really cute place!! Friendly?? Super friendly and welcoming! I had the Love story roll and my sushi connoisseur mother had the caterpillar roll. DEEEELISIOUS!!!! Got a craving for sushi?! This place is a must!

Ronald O.

Yelp
Great food and wonderful people. You can't beat the special sushi for lunch. Just enough food to keep you going for the remainder of the day. We eat here a couple times a month. Come try it out!

Justin L.

Yelp
Not sure how popular this place but if it's not it should be. Absolute hidden gem of a sushi spot in Jacksonville. I would recommended it to everyone. I've had high end sushi and this compares in flavor but fraction of the cost

Alexis F.

Yelp
I had seen this new sushi restaurant open, so I asked a friend to meet me for lunch. There was plenty of parking when I pulled up, and there was a sign outside stating the lunch specials for the day. My friend was sitting near the front of the restaurant, and there was plenty of room for a stroller by the table. The woman who was at the front counter came up and handed me a menu. I asked her to explain the lunch specials to me and to confirm that they were applicable to that day, which she did. I chose the California roll and the Mexican roll for $10.95, plus a side of white rice to feed my infant son for $3.95. There were six pieces each in the rolls, which filled me up quickly. My friend ordered vegetables and chicken teriyaki, and she received plenty of food. She and the sushi chef were super friendly, and the sushi chef checked with us to see how our food was. He even gave my son two pieces of origami, which was super nice. I liked the food and the environment and would highly encourage people to check them out!

Hong N.

Yelp
We reserve omesake on Google in a week advance. Serves was all nice. We been to a few omesake and typically omesake has some type of modernization fusion. Here its more of a traditional omesake with simple and clean sushi . Plenty of food with good portion. Fish was fresh and dessert was great.

Rachna K.

Yelp
This was a really cute little Japanese restaurant! We went there for hibachi but it's not your traditional hibachi experience with the grill in front of you. The food however tasted great! Their sushi was also really good and they have a wide array. The service at the restaurant was great! All of the staff were so friendly and gave us free appetizers and dessert on the house!

Rea L.

Yelp
Chef Chika is amazing. We did the omakase and I was blown away by the simplicity of each course. I felt like I was eating at his house. Each dish was a journey . I am so amazed. I can't wait to go back .

John S.

Yelp
Excellent. this place is awesome. Great food. The team makes sure you feel welcome and the surprise of a complimentary appetizer was real nice. Beer, wine, saki. Non alcoholic beverage also. What a great place

Pennie S.

Yelp
Oh my This is the best sushi bar in Jacksonville and I'm not saying that lately I have lived here my entire life. There are a lot of sushi, restaurants in Jax. I have tried most of the sushi restaurants in Jacksonville. But this restaurant is the Best sushi in Jacksonville. I love that the rolls are small enough to fit in your mouth unlike all the rest.

Kevin C.

Yelp
Food is wonderful, great quality and taste amazing. Hiro is a wonderful person and truly customers is really important to him. I'll continue to get my sushi from Hiro. The sushi and sashimi is on par like the sushi restaurants in Tokyo. Totally recommend.

Carolyn S.

Yelp
I could not get to this page fast enough.. I just finished my Sushi dinner and OH MY GOSH that was hands the best meal I had from a Japanese restaurant since being in Japan!. The chefs choice of fish was a total journey of textures and flavors left me having to sit in silence after each piece, reflecting on what the hell I just ate.. soft ,fluffy, and bouncy perfectly fresh fish and beautifully cooked and seasoned rice! Wow Chefs kiss!! I was a little shook on the price... $35 for Sushi Dinner .. but dang that was well worth the quality ! Take my money!! EVERY SUSHI LOVER NEEDS TO EAT HERE

Dave G.

Yelp
Just finished a Pork Katsu Curry, and it couldn't be any better. Reminds me very clearly of my favorite family restaurant in Tokyo. Prompt, polite, knowledgeable, and willing to listen to wants. Not cheap, but Tokyo wasn't cheap either. This is my go to Japanese restaurant from now on!

Keith D.

Yelp
wow!! unexpected delight!! tender habachi, delicious rolls. come try it you won't be disappointed

Foodie1972 F.

Yelp
We have been trying to get in here every time we drove through Jacksonville but it has always been booked but tonight on Christmas Eve on the off chance that we could get in, I called when I knew we would be driving through on our way to Tennessee and we were able to get two seats at the counter. Score! Absolutely delicious and fresh sushi! We ordered almost every piece of nigiri that they had to offer because it is rare to find a place that has many of the items so fresh and from Japan. We took pictures only after we ate 3/4 of our food. Anything on the menu will be delicious and fresh since we tried most of the fish lol A few of the times that stood out for my husband and I were the Otoro, Spanish mackerel and uni. Make sure to ask for anything special that may not be on the menu as well especially since they get fresh items in routinely. The Japanese uni was superb. I finished off with the chawanmushi. Google it if you are unfamiliar. The only thing I can relate it to is a small savory custard with big chicken flavor and the steamed savory custard with a velvety texture with a few pieces of mushroom, chicken and a few other items for texture throughout. It is absolutely comforting. It's especially delicious on cool nights like tonight. Thank you to the staff for such a wonderful experience. Until next time!

Brandon B.

Yelp
The only real sushi experience in Jacksonville. Nothing is under appreciated , even the simple California roll will knock your socks off.

Marcy T.

Yelp
Authentic Japanese, owner is Japanese. Fresh, fresh, fresh! You will never go anywhere else once you dine here!

Earl D.

Yelp
Food from kitchen has no taste whatsoever but hasn't tried sushi yet and service was on the spot, everything was fine but food from kitchen was flat out terrible what a shame...

Florina T.

Yelp
Excellent Sushi. My take is this is better than Hana Moon or O-Ku. Great lunch specials. Coming from CA, this place hands down is the most authentic sushi restaurant I have been to in Jacksonville. And believe me, I have very high expectations.

Laurie B.

Yelp
Wonderful sushi, probably the best in town, but I can no longer afford to eat here. I literally spent $20 on a favorite salmon dish a few weeks ago and now many entrees are as high as $35-$45!! I called and asked why they raised their prices more than two-fold, and the gentlemen claimed door dash and grub hub were more expensive . But these prices were inflated on their website too! Nobody in the area charges $45 for a one person sushi entree. I don't see how they will stay in business like this. They have priced themselves out of the competition in the wrong direction. It's a shame.

Jimmy C.

Yelp
Having visited Japan many times in my career it is refreshing to find a true authentic Japanese sushi bar here in Jacksonville. From the moment you walk in the door you know you are in a Japanese run business. The sushi was fantastic and the service was second to none. If you are in the area and are looking for a more traditional type sushi bar than please try this place. It is not fancy, it is not expensive, it is just good sushi and an affordable price.

Bennie S.

Yelp
Had the pleasure of ordering a dinner last weekend in light of the positive comments from previous customers . The meal was fantastic and the decor reminded me of the sushi bars I visited in Tokyo. The service absolutely wonderful. The meal was delicious so I decided to stop by again this week and order a different meal. Truly a real neighborhood gem and will make this location my new Japanese go-to restaurant.

Ashman40 ..

Yelp
Previously Haley Sushi. Many of the signage still says "Haley". I let this slide as they appear to be under new management. I was attracted by their pics of authentic looking Japanese dishes. I tried the sushi and shrimp tempura appetizer. The sushi was fresh and tasty. But the shrimp tempura was the best I've had since leaving Japan! They served it with a warmed tentsuyu dipping sauce. Not all restaurants provide tentsuyu. But the crowning touch was the daikon oroshi (ground radish) on the side, just as it should be. This is added to the tentsuyu. I've never had daikon oroshi served at any other Japanese restaurant in JAX. Add to that the flakey tempura batter and ample tenkasu over everything. It looked and tasted like it came straight from Japan! I will be back.

Asha A.

Yelp
Delicious and fresh sushi! I ordered the rock n roll roll, salmon sashimi, chutoro nigiri, and a salmon roll. Loved the salmon and the tuna. The chutoro was a perfect balance of buttery umami flavor. The salmon roll was generous. This restaurant has a unique miso soup that has a nice soy flavor to it. My partner got the chicken katsu curry and also enjoyed it. Overall I would definitely come back!

Eric C.

Yelp
New sushi chef from Tokyo. Been coming here for 10 years with new ownership probably the best knife work and quality of sushi. I really appreciate this place close to my home and recommend this place whole heartedly

Jenn D.

Yelp
My family and I ordered takeout sushi. Excellent flavor. So fresh. Great price point. Truly a JAX hidden gem!

Elodie W.

Yelp
Food is excellent and the sushi is very good and the hibachi too the interior is cute and wag. You taste yummy my tummy person that served is really nice. He gave us free onion rings.

Daniel V.

Yelp
Authentic Japanese. Every piece of nigiri was amazing! Will be back for omakase. It's the best one in Jacksonville for sure.

Jesse W.

Yelp
Everything was amazing and great prices. Small dining room but felt very homey. Quick and great service

Hanna T.

Yelp
The food was fantastic. The portions are not like those of a typical habachi/sushi restaurant, but didn't leave hungry and it was delicious. Had the volcano roll which was a touch on the sweet side, but after some hot sauce... my tastebuds were SINGING with delight. Also had the steak & chicken hibachi with was (like I mentioned) not as big as a portion, but was honestly incredible. Also to note - went on a Thursday, which is bogo sake and wine. WORTH IT.

Mary C.

Yelp
Passing through town. This was probably the worst Hibachi food I've ever had. It was over cooked and vegetables were cold. The Hiro near us is totally different. Sashimi was pretty good. Very kind and helpful staff. Clean restaurant.
