I've been by a couple times now with coworkers and I plan to keep coming back. The food is INCREDIBLE. If you're craving some soul food this is the joint, without question. This last time I got the Experience, which is the best bologna sandwich I've ever had. The other highpoint of His Place Eatery is the staff. They are the best! Our waitress today, Neani was friendly, attentive, and got everything correct. Keep up the excellent work everyone!

The owner, Mr. James is a great man! The food is always great here and just recently my sister passed away and my stepmother works at this restaurant and he made sure that there was enough food for her celebration of life. No questions asked I can’t thank him enough for what he did For our family. A truly compassionate man, and a restaurant with food to die for! I would recommend this restaurant to literally everybody in Indianapolis! There’s no better food like soul food

Oh.My.Goodness! This place is fantastic! The servers are wonderfully kind and personable. The chicken gets a chef's kiss! Seasoned, juicy, and crispy. I drizzled honey on mine. Mac n cheese was delicious. Sweet potatoes were yummy (if they'd throw some roasted brown sugared pecans in there it'd take it to the next level for me), green beans and mashed potatoes with gravy were both good enough to order again (after I try some other stuff but I'm getting the mac n cheese every time) the red velvet waffle with boneless breast and strawberry butter was also super good. I'd been wanting to try it out for years but hadn't stopped in until today, and man I was missing out! We will definitely be back. Thank you! We grabbed banana pudding and peach cobbler to go but I had to roll myself out of there and haven't tried those yet! But I am excited to. Update... the peach cobbler was amazing and the banana pudding was tasty too!

First time eating here and we’re already thinking of what we want to try next!! They seriously treat you like family. The ambiance inside was comfy, cozy, and homey. We were seated as soon as we walked in and asked if we had been there before. Since it was our first time, our waitress, Neani, welcomed us warmly and gave us some recommendations! We ordered the Turkey Manhattan and the chopped brisket sandwich with green beans and mashed potatoes & gravy on the side. Sweet tea too! The food came out fast and as soon as it did the chef came over, welcomed us, and wished us a delicious & blessed meal. From the first bite we were HOOKED!! Our girl, Neani, came back often to check on us and made sure to keep our sweet tea’s filled. Which by the way, the sweet tea was perfect and some of the best we’ve ever had, in the north and the south. Once we were almost fully stuffed, we ordered peach cobbler to share. When I say this peach cobbler was so good it was hard to fathom- I’m not kidding. Warm with a little crunch and a nice scoop of ice cream on top! It was a giant portion that my boyfriend and I could not even finish together! We took leftovers home and ordered a banana pudding to go, which made the BEST leftovers. All this to say, we can’t wait to come back and try something new!!

I ate at this place twice this week! First time was fried pork chops and grilled catfish with Mac and cheese and cream corn. Everything was good but i loved the cream corn! Today i went back for lunch before my flight and had pork belly on a bun and cream corn and sweet potato’s and again the food was GREAT! BTW the sweet tea is awesome too! The sweet potato cheese cake was 👎🏾i had way better!

Awesome food, flavor, quality, some really authentic SOUL FOOD. Catfish was fried perfectly, chicken wings were good and service was great too. Everyone at our table enjoyed their meal. To the His Place team: great job keeping high standards and "excellence" as a priority. Highly recommended, and we will be back.

Someone on my flight to IND recommended this spot and I’m so glad they did. Upon arriving I looked at the menu and instantly my stomach began to say, “FEED ME.” If I had it my way, I would’ve tried one of everything. I was extremely intrigued by the collard greens grilled cheese, because where else would I try one. That bad boy was mouthwatering, savory and had cheese pull like no other. Their yams tasted like a desert instead of a side dish and they fried up some of the crunchiest, crispiest, flavorful fried chicken I’ve ever tasted. Needless to say, my eyes wanted me to try everything but my heart and stomach were too full. We did have the opportunity to chat it up with the owner who shared his reasoning behind his Famous “Collard Green Grilled Cheese.” I will Most definitely make sure to stop and eat here again when in town. Go , EAT, Sing along to the melodies playing in the background, and enjoy a down home southern cooked meal at “His Place Eatery.”

So uh yeah. Just incredible food. I had the red velvet chicken and waffles and my goodness, they are incredible I wanna try so many things here.

So happy we came here with friends. I had had His Place food out and about at a catered event, but hadn't had the chance to stop in. It has a good location - lots of main roads nearby. The restaurant itself gives cozy diner vibes, and the service was great. I went for the chicken pot pie (deconstructed) and peach pie. While the food was on the pricier side, I can absolutely see why. It was incredible. The seasoning of the veggies, gravy, and chicken was incredible. I have a hunch they use Crisco instead of butter in their pastry, which I didn't love, but it was still great. The peach cobbler with ice cream was very hearty. I had to take most of it home. Would recommend eating it right away though!

Just go. Thank me later. His Place has some of the best soul food in the city to me! I've not been disappointed yet. This will be my second review, so I'll hit some key points: On Sundays, order ahead and expect long waits because EVERYONE and I mean everyone is going there for Sunday dinner. Online ordering helps. To my knowledge they still only allow parties up to five to dine in. It's a small space soon get it, but be warned. Be patient. All good things to those who wait! Everything single thing about this spot was great. From the service, to the atmosphere to the food. If I find myself in Indianapolis again, I am definitely returning.

You can smell how good the food is from the parking lot & although it may take a little bit for you to get your food, it's worth the wait! Never a miss at His Place! My usual go to is the chicken and waffle but no matter what I decide to get I always leave full, happy & with lunch for the next day because you get plenty of food!

His Place Eatery has two locations, and after recently visiting the one on the north side, I think it might be my favorite--though I'm still deciding! What I can confidently say is that the brisket is an absolute 10/10 at both spots. I also love that the owner takes the time to walk around and check on customers, adding a personal touch to the experience. That said, I've had a few hiccups at both locations. If the food isn't up to par, it's better not to serve it. My mom ordered dessert, but it was burnt, and when they brought out a second serving, it was the same. We were the last ones there, so we understood they were probably winding down for the night, but they should have just said they were out. The sweet potatoes also tasted like we got the last of the batch. Despite those issues, the service and most of the food are too good to keep us away. We'll definitely be back!

Unplanned lunch had us try this restaurant out. Our server was great, greeted us quickly,had good suggestions and took care of us. The place was small but had ample seating and a cute wall with inspirational quotes. The food was delicious. I ordered fried chicken with mashed potatoes and green beans. It was all good but those green beans were the best I've ever had. I'd come back just for those! Too full for dessert but I'm sure it would have been good.

Stopped here as it's a DDD spot. The food was good, Mac and cheese being my favorite. The caramel cake was also good, some desserts were sold out so I didn't get to try what I wanted. Service was lacking.

His Place is pretty consistently good. I've been several times over several years. I've even had some really good experiences with takeout, my food usually stays hot and it's packaged nicely and neatly enough to survive the drive home. I have pretty much found my safe meals which are either fried catfish or friend chicken wings with mac and cheese and sweet potatoes so I haven't had much else on the menu in the last couple of years. I ate inside the restaurant recently, and the ambiance gave old school soul food restaurant. Our server seemed under the weather which was concerning. Otherwise the experience was on par with what I've been experiencing all the years I've been eating here.

Finally got to take my sister and her fiancé here and they were VERY excited. I've lost track of how many times I've come to His Place but it is NEVER disappointing. I always get the smoked Turkey grilled cheese. Unfortunately I was not able to enjoy it this time due to the fact I wasn't feeling so well, but I did get to finally try their yams and I always enjoy their green beans which are cooked with TERKEY! Great service and great environment, of course great food also!

Wow! I was expecting decent, maybe even above average food, but I was pleasantly surprised by the food and the service received at a mid-week lunch! I met a friend for lunch and I was glad we waited until 1pm to meet there. That place was packed! But most folks were leaving to return to work, so our wait was about fifteen minutes. The place was clean! I was half expecting a slightly worn diner experience with an older wait staff , but once seated, we were promptly greeted with a friendly young woman with menus and gave our drink orders. I really wanted sweet tea. That was probably my only complaint--as I was given an overwhelmingly sweet tea that was lemon flavored. I ended up opting for water after. I ordered the catfish and collards. It arrived piping hot! The fish was absolutely delicious and had a very fine cornmeal breading that almost reminded me of a popcorn flavor--so good! It wasn't muddy tasting at all! And the collards? Perfectly cooked and balanced flavor. I could have eaten two bowls! I ordered fried chicken to take home to my husband for an after work snack. I guess it was tasty-- because he inhaled it before I got a chance to ask for a bite! I may have to try it next time. And yes, there will definitely be a next time!

In town for our church convention and found His Place via Yelp. Stopped by and found a quaint white building. Walked in to a friendly greeting and was quickly seated. Our waitress was Makayla who was not just friendly but patient as we figured out our food order. She provided recommendations and samples of sides to help us decide. Even better she brought over a piece of cornbread when my mom's sugar started crashing. So the meals... there were four in our party: 1. Fried catfish and smothered pork chop combo with greens and mashed potatoes . 2. Friend chicken platter with extra fried whiting with corn and fries. 3. Fried wings and smothered wings with corn, greens, and yams. 4. I had rib tips with mashed potatoes and green beans. Everything was phenomenal and all 4 of us had leftovers to go. The portions are huge! If I'm back in town I'll be back!!

Yesterday was my second visit here. Being from the south I love good southern style cooking. They got some of the best fried chicken I have ever eaten and that's saying something for those that know me. I love the macaroni and cheese here as well. The dressing was decent. I wish they would offer fried okra. My last visit I ordered the chicken as well but I added a fried pork chop to see how it was because that's my second favorite meat. It wasn't seasoned as well as the chicken is. But I'm going to try it again. I tasted someone's collards and I think they cook theirs in vinegar which I'm not a fan of that but I do love collards.

Simply an outstanding meal today. Everything was tops! The meatloaf was cooked perfectly with a hint of bbq sauce. The greens were slightly sweet and bitter at the same time. My Mac was cheesy and the noodles perfectly cooked. The stuffing was some of the best I've ever had. This meal didn't have any areas that needed improvement.

The food was awesome! Nice staff and it was quiet but we also went around 1pm! We had our food quick and it was so delicious and great staple!

The place my husband works just opened a new medical facility in the area and open house was today. I did a Yelp search for food in the area and His Place was the first on the list. We had food from here around the start of the Pandemic 3 years ago as curb side but not since then. It was about 2pm on Saturday. The parking lot was packed. We walked in and were asks if we were doing dine in. We put our name on the waitlist and got a text in about 15 min our table was ready. Our server was very friendly. Seriously the best service we've had in a long time from anywhere. She got our drinks and gave us a few minutes. I ordered two meats Grilled Blackened Catfish and Perch. With Mashed Potatoes and Gravy and Candied Yams. With Cornbread muffin. The catfish had great flavor. The Perch was good but not as good as the catfish. I normally hate dirty mashed potatoes but these were really good. The Candied yams were slap your mama good. The Cornbread muffin had great flavor but a little dry. Husband got a Smokehouse Grilled Cheese meat stuffed into a grilled cheese using brioche bread and provolone and Pulled Pork his sides were mashed potatoes no gravy and Mac n cheese. He loved the Grilled cheese. The pork was good ( I tasted it. He loved the Mac n cheese. He wasn't a fan of the mashed. I got Banana Pudding to take home. I ate it later. It was also super good. Nilla wafers with bananas and I'm guessing a pudding mixed with whipped topping. It was a big portion for the price. Very happy we made it back for dine in. As I said a the beginning the service was stellar. The food was excellent.

Talk about GOOD FOOD! Came to Indy for a cheer competition and made a list of places I wanted to dine at. His Place Eatery made the list. At first glance it doesn't look like much but the food absolutely makes up for the looks. Ms. Tracy was our waitress and she was great!. I took her advice and ordered the Fried Whiting which comes with two sides. The first was seasoned beautifully. Nice and crispy. Huge pieces too. The greens were delicious as well. A little stimmy but good. The yams were different. Not like I've had before but good too. I added some Mac & Cheese and Baked beans on the side. Beans were good and tangy as described. Mac & cheese was ok. My wife ordered the meatloaf which she said was delicious The chicken and waffles were good. Chicken could have used more seasoning but it's still good. As far as I'm concerned, when I come back for Jamfest in 2025 I'll definitely be coming here again. Some of the best fried fish I've ever had.

Amazing! I was in Indianapolis looking for lunch when I stumbled across this spot. The food was excellent as was the service. I had perch and wing combo with mac and sweet potatoes. Closest to home cooking I've had on the road in a while. Highly recommended if you are in the area.

The food and the service is awesome. We went on Sunday and I had maybe a five minute wait. we ordered uptowns customized and these were served quickly. Uptowns are essentially Arnold Palmers- 1/2 sweet tea and 1/2 lemonade. Today I had chicken and waffles with side of baked beans and fries. My daughter had a smoked turkey, grilled cheese with mac & cheese and bourbon corn. All of this was delicious and was served pretty quickly. Chef Jones came out and chatted with us. Also, our waitress was awesome as well.

Highly recommended!!! A couple of coworkers and I stopped in here for dinner and the food was delicious!! We were hungry but still had leftovers to take home. The employees were really friendly - we are ready to go back again!

I'm a tough critic when it comes to soul food cause I come from grandma's home grown garden of greens and poppin peas while talkin shz with the cousins, gathering every Sunday for family dinner and not a holiday was missed without warm food and giving thanks! With that said, my experience at His Eatery was inviting, the service was kind and very attentive. If you notice the pic, my corn bread is picked at only cause, again, my "expectations" of moist cornbread, but that wasn't what was on my plate. The Rib Tips were delicious, well cooked and the flavor was perfect, not too sweet and not too spicy. The Mac, tasty, I'd eat the Mac again! Yams were a bit sweet for my taste but if you like "candied yams" order those! Hubby had catfish and that was fried and seasoned perfectly!!!

I was in the area and looking for Mac & Cheese nearby for my daughter, and so glad we stopped by! The service was top notch. Employees were waiting in the front, refilled water, offered a box for multiple to go boxes. All the little things. Like checking in a few min after food drop off to make sure all is good. The fries had a nice crunch. The burger was juicy and the onions and accompanying tomato gave a nice contrast. The real star was the Mac & cheese and the green beans. The Mac had a nice creaminess to it. I think I'm gonna try the brisket or some of the smoked goods next time. Everything that came from the kitchen looked awesome.

Second time visiting and the food did not disappoint. It was a first time visit for my friend so he got a variety of dishes to try. I settled on the fried fish with the cabbage and green beans. And the cornbread muffin while he wanted to try the chicken and waffles as well as the candied yams and Mac and cheese. Initially, I didn't plan on getting dessert but decided I would try it, and we both got the peach cobbler. All the food was well seasoned and delicious. I did find the crust on the fish to be a tiny bit salty I did find the crust on the fish to be a tiny bit salty. And I wasn't automatically offered the tartar sauce and I had to ask for it. The only dish that was a bit of a letdown for my friend was the Mac and cheese because he felt it needed more cheese. The cobbler was delicious but definitely needs the ice cream to dial down the sweetness. Service was excellent and our server was friendly and kept out drinks filled. Will definitely be back.

Wow! Catfish fillet was fresh, thick, and perfectly cooked...and there 2 of them!! Greens, cabbage, and cornbread were equally outstanding as was Lo, my server. Couldn't ask for anything more. Praise the Lord, and praise His Place!!

This place is a 10/10 in my book. I came in during the lunch rush but was promptly seated and waited on. It was pretty busy but my food came out quickly. I got the whiting fish with greens and macaroni. And the macaroni was probably some of the best restaurant macaroni I've ever had!! The fish was also very good and the portions were perfect. The sweet tea was also just the right amount of sweetness and the waitress was kind enough to give me a to go cup. I cannot wait to go back to try some of the other menu items. I highly recommend stopping by!

Great food, tremendous service, and a laid back family atmosphere makes this a home run choice for a meal in Indy. My daughter and I were able to split the chicken and red velvet waffles with 2 sides and both feel filled up. The Red Velvet waffle is one of my favorite items to get here with the delicious buttercream icing.

His place omg I have no words this place is awesome it has a-lot of food to choose from on the menu so there is always something for everyone to eat including the children they even have a kids menu the servers are awesome and very nice the food is cooked very good to perfection and also very flavorful I wouldn't trade it in for anything else

Food was great, yummy, I tried their fried chicken pot pie... & that made my day, tastes so different than any other one, and their cornbread is super soft and delectable, this place is a Gem and I'm glad I tried some soul food out east ‼

The service was very welcoming. They let you try out a sample of a side. The greens and Mac n cheese were good. I also tried the fried chicken and rib tips. I would highly recommend coming here. Gives you a home type of feeling with a great staff.

I had some taste for soul food and decided to head out to His Place Eatery. I heard great things about this restaurant and wanted to experience it first hand. It was rather crowded so I decided to get the food to go. The wait time was approximately 20 minutes and it did not seem like it. The staff was super friendly and ensured I had enough time to select the items that I wanted to order. I went straight in with the fried chicken wings, candied yams, and Mac n cheese. Once home I opened the food which was still hot and fresh and oh boy what a treat! The chicken was good to the last bone not to mention the candid yams and mac n cheese. I must say I now understand what the excitement was about. This place is also great for ordering a family sized meal. If you want some good ole fashioned soul food then make it your business to stop in to His Place Eatery. I know I will definitely and then to my top 10 list.

My second visit to this southern soul food Mecca and every bit as great as the first. My first time, the peach marmalade double burger was recommended by my server and was outstanding. Today I chose rib tips - a very generous portion of succulent morsels of smoked pork - flavorful and good enough to chew every last bite from the cartilaginous rib bones. My sides were 1) the best cooked cabbage with bacon I could ever imagine and 2) a creamy flavorful potato salad with just the perfect savoriness. Great personable and efficient service. It's a 'must' try. Next time I have to get the catfish - it looked so good at the next table and, again, huge portions.

I can't believe that I've never been here before. Borderline tragic. I met a friend here for lunch and upon entry I was warmly greeted and seated. Our server, Mikayla, was an absolute gem. I've been living abroad and haven't had even proper soul food awhile, so I was in the mood for allll the deliciousness but couldn't decide. Based on our servers recommendation I went with the grilled cheese with brisket and, of course, Mac 'n cheese and candied yams (and peach cobbler for later) . I also ordered the Uptown which is their version of the Arnold Palmer. I don't normally like Lemonade/Sweet Tea mixes but this www so good. Not too sweet. My thirst was quenched. My food was soooo delicious. Worth every single calorie. I couldn't eat it all but you better believe I will have it later today with the cobbler. All in all a good first trip. I might have to add a second to try the fried fish before heading out of town. Yummmm

Had to come back with my friend! I will say it, everything here is good! She tried the chicken and waffles, loved it - I had the Po Boy, loved it! The sides are just as delicious as the main course! Our server was a polite young man who made sure we were well taken care of! Honestly, It's a pretty busy restaurant but we stopped in right at noon so it was still a little slow, lucky for us our food came out quickly - but it started to fill up as soon as we started to eat! His Place has such a welcoming ambiance, I can't wait to come back again!

We have eaten at His Place Eatery multiple times, and we have not ever been disappointed. The food is what one would expect, in my opinion as; Sundays at grandmother's house. The food is excellent. The portions are plentiful, and the drinks are refillable. The Eatery is a molten pot of diversity. Ask for Miss Loe when you want to go in and sit down to eat. She is a wonderful lady with a dynamic personality. The owner, makes his rounds around the dinning area, which is a wonderful courtesy.

Underrated place for a great meal!! Food is so good!! You'll want to find another chance to get back!! I recommend to anyone visiting Indy's east side.

Today I received the best plate of food I've ever had here! The grilled pork chops were tender, juicy and flavorful. The greens were tender and seasoned well and was a great complement to the chops and the potato salad! I can't wait for the new location to open!

Always excellent! I eat here whenever I am in town every couple years. Have eaten here five times. Had smoked meatloaf, green beans, mac n cheese, and cornbread. Hardest thing about the menu is choosing sides!!! Took home banana pudding for dessert. Scratch cooking all day long. Comfort food like my mom would make. Love love love that the chef mingles with the diners. Restaurant is always busy with locals. Good service- seated promptly, server was attentive and friendly. Food arrived in a timely manner. Comfortable setting. I'll be back at least one more time on this trip .

This was a nice surprise! It's a clean and small place with a few tables inside. You walk in and you can approach front counter and they will seat you if you are dining in. They have a nice and friendly staff. We ordered the grilled Cajun tilapia with collard greens and and corn muffin and the grilled cheese with brisket sandwich with candied yams. Holy cow! Food was better than we anticipated - always awesome when this happens! The tilapia was very flavorful with a slight kick to it. The grilled cheese sandwich with brisket - did not ever think this would go well together but it was so fork tender and juicy. This is definitely a good spot for some soul food that will definitely stick to your bones. Haha Check them out - enjoy some finger lickin' good food!!

Everything here, from the service, to the food and timing of everything was perfect!! There was plenty of parking when I arrived close to 12 on a Saturday. The staff were so friendly and asked if it was dine in or carry out. I was seated right away and although I was eating alone, this type of restaurant just made you feel right at home! It reminded me of a place you stop in on a long road trip, hungry and ready for a good meal...but then wanting to stay for hours! I order the fried chicken with a side of mashed potato's. The seasoning of the chicken and the succulent tenderness truly had me doing a lil' food happy dance in my seat. It was SO GOOD! The waitress was attentive and personable and refilled my coffee right when it ran out. She made sure I was well taken care of. I had been told by a friend not to miss out on the banana pudding so it was actually the first thing I ordered! I lived in Georgia for 3 years and the banana pudding at His Place blew me away! It is perfectly creamy and sweet. I cannot wait to come back to this place. A bit of a drive for me but so worth it.

I was in town with a friend for training. We loved this place so much that we ate there three different times! Everything was delicious, but my favorite was the ribs! The staff was friendly responsive as well.

His Place Eatery took us to church. Okay. I made an error and didn't post immediately. I feel that I did my Yelp community wrong by not sharing this place right away. Forgive me. It is the holiday season after all. My friend and fellow Elite were able to meet last minute for lunch on a Saturday. Like hello, stars aligning with our busy schedules. Of course we wanted to try a new place so I suggested His Place because y'all know a good thing when you eat it. Off we went. We arrived just after they opened and it was already booming with business. An excellent sign! The service was immediate. We ordered all the things. My friend had tears in her eyes from the greens. Actual tears. I damn near did too from the chicken and dumplings. The fried chicken? Don't you start with me on some perfectly seasoned, amazingly fresh, juicy deliciousness. I've had some good chicken in this city and this tops them all. The mashed potatoes, the mac, everything just jaw dropping amazing. We really did try it all and it was a religious experience. Must try.

Literally doesn't get better than this. If heaven were a restaurant, it'd be this place. OK, I grant you this isn't fancy dining. And I've had very, very fancy dining. But it's darn good dining. The staff act like family with each other and you in all the best ways. Everyone is friendly and just there to help you have the best breakfast or brunch possible. And the food! This is chicken and waffles done as an art form. The chicken is fried so perfectly. And the waffles were to die for. Both the red velvet specialty waffles I got, and the plain jane waffles some others in my party got. If you want chicken and waffles, this is the place to go. Nowhere else is quite this amazing.

The food is truly outstanding, and the portions are extremely generous. And the times that my wife and I have been there, our wait time is always been less than 15 minutes, which is also extremely helpful, especially when we're really hungry.
