Best Sherry Bars in London for Fino, Oloroso, and Pedro Ximenez | Eater London

"To sip in the City, call into Hispania and grab some tapas. Try Matusalem Oloroso seco with a plate of Spanish cheese – Matusalem is the Spanish name for Methusaleh, a reference to the length of the sherry’s ageing. It’s a sherry with edges sanded down into smoothness: perfect for ending the night." - Johanna Derry

We recently visited Hispania, located in the financial district of London City, and I must say it was a delightful experience. As a Spaniard, I often find myself feeling a bit let down by Spanish restaurants abroad, but this was definitely not the case with Hispania. It was refreshing to see a restaurant that not only respects traditional Spanish cuisine but also elevates it with a touch of luxury. The ambiance is warm and welcoming, offering a perfect balance of privacy and comfort. The interior design, paired with the attentive and professional service, makes you feel genuinely valued as a guest. The staff, including the manager, went above and beyond to ensure our experience was nothing short of excellent. The food was genuinely delicious. While every dish was well-prepared and flavorful, the mushroom croquettes were a particular highlight—simply exquisite! The menu offers a broad range of authentic Spanish dishes, all prepared with evident care and quality ingredients. One pleasant surprise was the pricing. Considering the location and the elevated dining experience, the prices were quite reasonable. I left feeling not only satisfied with the food but also pleased with the overall value. If you’re looking for an authentic Spanish dining experience in London, Hispania is a must-visit. Whether you’re Spanish yourself or simply a lover of good food, this restaurant offers a genuine taste of Spain with a level of service and ambiance that makes you want to return. I’d definitely recommend it!

Absolutely delicious! The croquettes are so delicious and melt in your mouth I would eat these everyday if I could (and not put on any weight!!). I want to make everything I tried at home, that's how utterly scrumptious the food was. If I could give 10 stars I would! The staff were super attentive and friendly even though it was very busy, which is a wonderful touch. A lovely place, lovely atmosphere, beautiful plates and decorations. Also the women's toilet wallpaper, wonderful.

Bread is very good. Galicia steak is well cooked and very local. Slightly too raw for my standard but the chef cooked it again to suits my taste. Very good service and location.

Google
Classy tapas place with good selections and Spanish wine. The foods served were delicate and well prepared to perfection. I hope the price point was slightly lower so I can go visit the place more often. Service and environment is superbly cozy.

It was a pleasant experience from start to finish! The staff were very attentive, prompt and friendly. We tried most of the menu options and they were all good! As it’s tapas, recommend 3-4 dishes for person. We got the basque cheesecake for dessert and it was perfect to top off the meal!

Everything was perfect — the food was delicious, the service was attentive, and the design was beautiful. The only downside was the noise level; it got quite loud inside, making conversation a bit difficult. Still, a fantastic experience overall.

The food was great and our server was really nice! Real Spanish food. Great atmosphere and amazing service. The server really knew his stuff.

Yelp
It was only average. Went here for drinks and dinner with a business colleague. Had a variety of tapas and two mains. Pan con tomate was not very good, a disappointment really. Jamon was not bad. I felt the tuna was too salty and the fried veal was really bland. Not very impressed with the service either which started out good but then got very rushed. I felt like they wanted us out of there. With so many great restaurants in London best to try somewhere else.

Yelp
Great food and wine here. Quality of the ingredients is great and the service is attentive and personable. Really nicely set out and good vibe. My only tip is that the food is bigger than traditional tapas! We over ordered against the recommendation of the waitress - but it all sounded so good we wanted to try more! Oh and get the arroz negro! Delicious!

Yelp
Oh my. This is the nicest Spanish food I've had outside Spain! It's right next to Bank station and full of bankers, as you'd expect from the area, so it's not cheap, but it's way worth it! We started off with a beer, some manchego cheese and some little crispy breadsticks as we trawled through the multitude of amazing dishes on the menu. After persuading my brother that you shouldn't go to a fancy Spanish restaurant and order sliders (?!) we ordered two portions of the chicken paella. It was zingy, flavoursome and perfectly cooked. I was concerned that the portion looked a bit meagre, (I've told you I'm greedy before right?) but my fears were unfounded. It was the perfect sized plate of food. The service was really good, and the staff were very friendly and efficient. I can't wait to go back and sample other great things from the menu!

Yelp
The paella during lunch is soooo good. They only make two big paellas, one veggie and one chicken and seafood for lunch so come here by 12 to get a portion. Fantastic tortilla too. For dinner, the squid ink rice is a huge portion, you can easily share it with 4 people. Croquetas and the Crujientes de Queso are also delish. Finish off the meal with the Torrija.

Yelp
I stopped into Hispania this afternoon with high expectations. It has high ratings, everyone around me looked to be wealthy businessmen and women, and the interior/staff attire is designed to make the place look expensive. Unfortunately, the food and service I received did not measure up to the high-end atmosphere Hispania tried to create. First, I was never offered bread, even though I saw many other tables around me being offered bread. My server was ok, but he was a little curt and rushed- he didn't tell me a thing about the menu or give me any recommendations. I ordered the crujientes de queso and the pimientos de padrón as well as a glass of rosé. The rosé was alright, and they do have a decent wine list. The crujientes de queso were like hors d'oeuvres at a fancy event- meant to look pretty and expensive but not to be eaten. The toffee phyllo dough was very light and crispy and allowed them to shape the dish into little triangles, but the filling tasted like a generic cheese dip I could buy at a grocery store. What concerns me even more about this dish is that when I ordered it the server told me it was one of his favorites and a wonderful dish.... really? Is this what they think good food is? The pimientos de padrón were alright but not life changing. I feel like I've had the equivalent dish at much less expensive restaurants. It was essentially cooked peppers with salt. I will say that at least the peppers were cooked well. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone. It wasn't a complete train wreck; nothing was inedible or disgusting, but they really missed the mark given their prices and atmosphere. I won't be going back.

Yelp
Great table in the City, nice tapas if sometimes confusing about sizes. Great quality, maybe a little too formal for the type of food. Anyway, great for business meetings...

Yelp
In my opinion one of the best Spanish Restaurants in London. Not the cheapest Spanish but not the most expensive either, specially if you go for a proper plate rather than tapas. Their food has an excellent quality. Apart from the "paella", they serve a lot of dishes from Northern Spain, like fabada or cachopo, less known than the famous paella but very good to. Try something different and very Spanish too!. The black rice is as good as it can be!

Yelp
Good environment and food was decent as well. We ate tuna tartare which was an outstanding dish, the tortilla which was ok (I've had better at Jose), pan con tomate which was delicious - lightly garlicky. Th meatballs- albindigas, also a must have. We both had a couple glasses of wine which were easy drinking wines. Not much to complain about with this place other than slightly pushy waitstaff on number of dishes to order.

Yelp
Spanish people consider it the best tapas restaurant in London and I need to say it is quite good. I have been here few times for lunch and once for dinner. We had a selection of tapas for the table and i must say that the ham and the croquetas were very good. Also worth trying the rice with squid ink and the fried shrimps. Good dessert menu as well (not only spanish stuff) It is not cheap but not uber expensive either

Yelp
We got a Groupon type deal that was for a full course meal of dishes and drink and coffee. We had never heard of this place but saw good things and it was in a location swish with money so thought it must be quite good. What we got was a total experience as soon as we walked in through the door. Mostly clientle from nearby city type places we were welcomed in like old friends and tabled soon after. The waitress (Spanish) was very friendly and always accommodating. What we had: - Starter of Tuna Tartare. Fresh. So fresh and a little zingy with a great sauce to serve with. - - Main of seabass, tomato and potato. Very nice. Nothing spectacular but delicately cooked. - Iberico Pork with apple puree - Dessert of toffee Torija and cream. First time having this it was heavenly (on recommendation of waitress) - Deconstructed Cheesecake with strawberry and mango crumble. Very interesting flavours. - Had a coffee digesif to finish. A perfect end.

Yelp
I went to Hispania this week for my Spanish friends birthday, and it was absolutely delicious! We had the choice to stand or be seated for our tapas and chose the former, unusual but great fun. The plates came out thick and fast and there was more than enough food for all of us. All the food was tasty and cooked perfectly, including plenty of cheese, chorizo, tortilla and fresh fish. We had a half bottle of wine included in our menu but actually they were more than generous and everyone had their fill! The staff were pleasant and attentive, and overall I would definitely recommend this place!!

Yelp
This place is right across from the now-deceased Abacus, so close to Bank Station yet I never noticed it before! Downstairs there are plenty of tables for nice sit-down dinners, but also two bars so one of them had been rented out by a company on the night we were there. Then upstairs, once you go up the grand staircase, it is very spacious and was completely empty on a Tuesday. Our party had reserved an area, so it's quite an impressive that this venue can host up to 3 or 4 private parties at one time. The bar men were very friendly and even let us taste a few wines, since we weren't familiar with a lot of the Spanish ones. I tried a few white wines, but my favorite was the Canals Y Nubiola Brut Cava. And it comes in such a beautiful glass, definitely goes with the fancy surroundings!

Yelp
Amazingly delicious tapas, the friendliest service I have had in London, and gorgeous spacious setting - could it get any better than this? Yes, it could! And I am not talking about the deserts (which are to die for) and the extensive wine list but about how surprisingly reasonable the prices at Hispania are for the outstanding quality of food and service that it offers. The dishes are also very authentic - the first time I went to Hispania was because my Spanish friends wanted me to try the food of their native region Asturias. We ended up ordering pretty much every item on the menu and there wasn't a single one that wasn't fantastic.

Yelp
Amazing place! Great food and service! Definitely try the suckling pig leg and the tuna carpaccio! The Marques de Closa red is a great pairing with the pig too! Cheers!

Yelp
It shouldn't deserve a Michelin. Tried the paella and it was very salty that my friend and I could not finish the whole dish. We even got a bit of stomachs after the salty dish. The oxtail was tasteless that was far from expectations. Got an iberico ham as starters as well and it was ok. Altogether we spent £37 per person which was not worth, and when we told the waiter about the salty paella we just got no response.

Yelp
Probably the best tapas bar in London and definitely the best in the City. Good ambienence and a nice place to bring a client or a date for a drink and good food.

Yelp
So tonight I went again to Hispania and my only regret is not returning sooner. This is hands down the best tapas I've had and I spent this past summer in Spain! I took my colleagues and as all Spanish speakers, the experience was so special because every staff member speaks Spanish and we felt like we were in Spain. The food was mouthwatering. We ordered many tapas, including the Russian salad, the cheese platter (the membrillo paired with cheese is to die for), croquetas, pimientos, patatas bravas and another seafood dish. It was amazing - everything was so delectable that we couldn't stop trying more and more, even though we were feeling full. The portions are quite generous and more importantly, the quality is top notch. And the best part? The service. I've never been in a friendlier and warmer atmosphere than Hispania - the waiters are so attentive, helpful and charming and the manager, Juan, is so personable and truly caters to every client. One of my colleagues and good friend loved it so much that she made a reservation for next Friday! This is the best place for not just tapas, but for a wonderful evening.
