9 Local Denver Spots for a Great Bourbon Cocktail | Eater

"This unique spot on South Broadway has one of the only rooftop spaces in the neighborhood. Go for the views of downtown Denver and the Rocky Mountains, stay for a burger, a side of bacon-laced macaroni and cheese, and a tipple from the South Broadway restaurant’s large, world-wide whiskey list. Here you can’t go wrong, whether you choose green chili cheese fries with a dram of Bulleit Bourbon, or a peanut butter and jelly laden burger with fries and an Old Fashioned with Bulleit Rye." - Vox Creative

14 Places to Dine and Drink Outdoors Around Denver - Eater Denver

"This unpretentious South Broadway tavern has more than 40 beers on draft, more than half of which are local. The rooftop patio includes a full bar, two TVs, a fireplace, and westward views. The BLT dip is indulgent, but good for groups, while the burgers are a solid choice for a real meal." - Gigi Sukin

Good food but service experience wasn’t good. Our first time eating here so it was unclear if we seat ourselves. Waited a bit for the bartender to be able to direct us. Once we came back up to the bar to order, service was curt when answering our questions about the food and menu. Closing our tab was hard since there was no one behind the bar when we were finished so we had to close out downstairs.

Google
This is my perfect bar. Exposed brick, painted tin ceiling, old school BAR vibes. Aaaaand huge draft selection, charming bartender, and elevated bar food. The danger with a bar bar is that the food is often the first to suffer. They had chicharrones and queso (what?!?) and in house tater tots that were phenomenal! I *will* be back.

Google
This staff is amazing. Only reason I come back is to see Ray and Cam. They provide an atmosphere that is unmatched. They make sure I am happy and enjoying myself when I am there. They are one of the main reasons I come back here. They are professional and fast servers. They are like McDavid and Draisaitl behind the bar. Can’t thank the two of them enough. They deserve the Stanley Cup!

Google
We came for Saturday brunch and the bottomless mimosas are a great deal! Alicia took great care of us and literally never let my mimosa get empty. The rooftop is so pleasant even on a hot day because they have shade sails and misters. Food is classic bar food, best version of what you think of at a pub. Our server was attentive even with it being busy with larger groups. It’s a staple if you live in the neighborhood or a great destination for out of towners shopping the area.

Google
Styles and Ray are so awesome! I literally come to hangout and catch up with them. Love supporting Historians but when those two are on shift together, its like watching Tony Parker and Tim Duncan! Legends.

Google
The server/bartender Elisha is a gem!! She was so warm, welcoming, and hospitable to our large birthday brunch party, even though we didn’t call ahead. You can’t beat the rooftop for weekend brunch during the summer. Great food, drink options, $12 bottomless mimosas, and most importantly good vibes all around.

Google
We have been to the place a couple times for drinks. Great staff, and drinks are delish, plus they have a wide selection of beer on tap. Tonight my husband and I visited the Historian to try their Fryday Fishn’ Chips special. It was the best fish fry we have had here in Denver or anywhere west of the Mississippi! Also, the special includes a drink (which is included in the $12.78price)! Great food, drinks and people. The staff is attentive but not overly in your face. Ray is one of the weekend bartenders. He is a great server with a great personality too! We highly recommend!

Google
I've got mixed feelings about this place. I've now been twice, about a year apart, and recently they have done away with table service and posted notices of increased prices. Increased prices but no table service? This most recent visit we went at about 3:30 on a Monday so there wasn't any wait to order or get our food and drinks. That's great but what happens when it gets as busy as it was when I visited on a weekend a year ago? I imagine the bar gets swamped given they have to take food and drink orders and the outgoing food is picked up at the same place. I really like the food and drinks. The Steak Arugula salad and BLT Caesar Chicken salad are both great, the fish and chips too. I haven't had a bad drink there, and we've tried just about all of them. On the other hand the high prices mean you can quickly rack up a mean bill, especially if you order an app, an entree, and a drink. Not to mention sides are not included with entrees like burgers so that's an extra cost. The employees are nice and always helpful and the rooftop dining area is great- covered with some shade and plenty of misters. I'd like to eat here again if I'm in the area but man, not sure if my wallet can handle getting myself and the folks lunch.

Yelp
Best air conditioning in town!! Also very bird friendly. Like trust me the air conditioning was so good! Also good beer.

Yelp
Cool spot on south Broadway with a rooftop patio! Great selection of beer on tap. Also food menu. Fun atmosphere for a casual place to relax - happy hour mon- Friday 2-6pm and some other events

Yelp
A pretty good spot with some great deals! The $12 bottomless mimosas with an entree deal is awesome. My favorite thing to get here is the Korean chicken sandwich with fries, the fries are awesome as is the sandwich. A lot of the food is a bit overpriced for what it is in general but when you go for the daily deals they have it's good, love a rooftop of course too!

Yelp
Stopped in here on a Saturday and it was busy and popular. We really enjoyed sitting outside on the rooftop and it was pretty big. The burgers we got were really good, we were happy with it the food. Bartenders were nice and chill. Note it can be a bit rowdy so if that's not your vibe maybe not the place for you.
google avatar

Cindy L.

Yelp
4 star rating for a rooftop bar with fun vibes and decent food. Came to hang out on a nice Saturday afternoon. All we were looking for was a rooftop with food where we could hang out and have fun and that's exactly what this place is! Bartenders were super friendly and service was prompt. Overall highly recommend coming here with friends on a Saturday afternoon.

Yelp
Kelli is the greatest that ever existed. I'm coming back just for her. Yes this is after happy hour margs. Cheerssss

Yelp
Historian usually gets it right. Service is always superb! Gunner was our bartender, and he was outstanding. He was prompt. He was attentive. He was kind, and he was sweet. Historian is always pretty good about their food, their service and their drinks. They are consistent and they are one . of the best deals you can find on Broadway with the ambience to match. Not many other bars have a rooftop that you don't even know of by the vibe of the long booths and dark atmosphere the first floor provides. I admit, I don't go up to the patio much, but when I do it full. Definitely a bar you want to check out while you're on Broadway

Yelp
I want to tell everyone to go here but also not so my favorite place doesn't get crowded lol. The food is upscale bar food but they also have a little brunch on the weekends. I came here the first time bc my BIL is Canadian and I saw they had poutine on the menu. I stayed bc the ambiance, drinks and food are on point. I love the Korean chicken sandwich with a king of carrot saison.

Yelp
I've been to historians quite a bit. We had Nick behind the bar today, and he was the best service we've had here by far. Great vibes, very quick, and super kind. 10/10 would recommend brunch at historians when Nick is bartending! Music, food, and drinks were all amazing.

Yelp
love this spot always slaps. I immediately transport to a premier league game and cheering on the lads.

Yelp
Friday lunch hour on a sunny day Plenty of seating on the rooftop Better food options and quality than typical bar and grill Relaxed vibe

Yelp
Food is very delicious and Mac n' cheese was rich (do recommend getting the Mac n' cheese), everyone was very sweet and attentive to your needs.

Yelp
My girlfriends and I decided to stop in for happy hour and their Taco Tuesday special. Well, found out the Taco Tuesday special has ended. Probably some time ago. It had been quite a while since we had been here on a Tuesday. Regardless we were there for happy hour and we had a great time. There were open tables on the patio and it was a nice day except for some light wind, but we didn't let that bother us. The upstairs bartender was on point and great with food suggestions. I went with the French dip with fries based on his recommendation. He made a great rec because the French dip was seasoned well with tender meat and the au jus was delicious and had great flavor. My girlfriends got the fried chicken sandwich, fried pickles and nachos and everyone loved all of it. Overall great happy hour and love that patio.

Yelp
The first floor is always empty, but the roof has the best view on Broadway. I recommend. Food is decent too

Yelp
Fish and chips slaps. Good vibes. Good music. Good service. Good drinks. 85 characters is too many characters.

Yelp
Place rules. Bartenders are great, super kind, quality drinks great burger and fries. 10/10 reccomend as a local or as a place to grab a pint. Certainly my new local
google avatar

Yelp
A nice place to meet up with friends. A good beer selection. The food menu had variety so something for everyone. Staff was really friendly. The outdoor patio was closed, and it was pretty loud inside on a Friday evening.
google avatar

Donny D.

Yelp
Vibes, drinks and food were great! Service was terrible though. No one to greet you or tell you where to go. No "open seating" signs. When we finally got to the rooftop, the bar tender greeted us very poorly and rudely. When we asked her to repeat herself, because the music was so loud, she then proceeded to yell at us like we were children. After saying thank you, she rolled her eyes. Her alone is why I'm giving a bad review. Sad that one person can ruin the whole business reputation.

Yelp
Came to Historians for an easy dinner after a loooong day of travel so I wasn't really wearing my most astute Yelper hat. That said, I was satisfied with my meal here. I ordered the Bootlegger burger. I wasn't sure if they'd be mindful of a specific burger temp request and it was not, in fact, a thing. I asked for medium rare and it came out more toward medium well, but still juicy and flavorful. The fries were pretty meh but the burger was substantial enough that it actually saved me from mindlessly inhaling food I didn't need. The space seemed clean and friendly enough and I was really impressed by the menu selection from a place that seems like it's primarily a bar. There are definitely some other things I'd like to try once I get over the sticker shock of returning to Denver prices after being in another country.

Yelp
Chill spot with lots of space for any size of group. Warm ambience on the lower floor with lots of pretty bottles to look at. The rooftop has plenty of heaters and a fireplace to stay warm by while you socialize! Lots of local beers on tap to choose from.

James S.

Yelp
Absolutely fantastic place to come to. Great beer selection. Great music. Ask for Allison. Customer service is superb. They go over and beyond on customer service. HIGHLY recommend.

Yelp
Came upon this place for brunch. When we walked in, the bar was dead. But when the bartender asked us if we wanted the rooftop patio- that is where we went and their are a lot of stairs, but it was a cute outdoor patio. There wasn't a wait for a Sunday brunch which was nice. We ordered the Spanish hangover. It had good flavors, and the entree was filling. Make sure to crack the eggs right away or they will cook if you like it runny. We really liked this, the only recommendation I would have would be to have the green chili on the side or smothered on this. We also tried the chicken tenders and fries come with it. The batter on the chicken was good, but the chicken was a little dry. We will definitely be back!

Yelp
I love Historian's! It's close to my apartment and close to other businesses so it's a great spot on any night of the week. The food here is decent, it's a pub type menu so you won't find any fine dining but what they make is yummy. They have a pretty wide variety of beer on tap and a full bar. Prices are not too bad. Service has always been friendly and I love their rooftop! It's a fun place to chill or party, whichever you're feeling!

Yelp
Good snacks and beer selection. Less annoying south Broadway sports bar, was surprised. Good for happy hour after work.

Yelp
i LOVE this place. i think the reason i'm here so much is not only my friend, but i've never felt more safe anywhere else. i'm safe here. i'm protected here and every single staff member is amazing. everyone is so incredibly supportive and nice. i met my best friend here. it's the staff that makes it great.

Yelp
Haven't been here in a minute so we decided to have lunch. Street parking but we were lucky and found one a few doors down from the restaurant. Bypassed the bar and headed upstairs to the rooftop seating. They have TVs at the bar and dining tables. The upstairs has a bar as well and tables. There is a TV but it was more fun to look out onto the street and at the sky. Followed the adventures of a squirrel as it rooted around on the next rooftop. The server was friendly. She brought us our drinks while we perused the menu. They were out of fish and chips so I went with the sesame encrusted ahi salad. Came with edamame, cucumber and mango on top of romaine and cabbage and then tossed in a soy-ginger vinaigrette. He had the lunch special - cheeseburger, fries and a drink for $5.95. Yummy. The ahi slices were seared just right and tender. The leaves of Romaine and cabbage crisp and fresh. I liked the crunch of the edamame and the sweetness of the mango. I also love cucumbers so this salad was a good idea. I'm glad I followed the server's advice. He enjoyed his burger and the fries were so good. I 'helped' him eat them. I was trying to be good and not eat fried foods but the fries were so tasty. I ate a lot of his fries. I could have also eaten another serving of seared ahi. Will have to come again.

Yelp
No pictures because I didn't even get to eat. I went to the Historians for a family dinner! The rest of my party beat me there so I told them to order without me. Didn't know what time I would make it due to traffic and finding a parking spot haha. When I arrived the waiter was putting down everyone's entree. They asked if they could get me anything but I didn't look at the menu ahead of time so I got a water and told them I will order an entree in a moment. They left to get the water. When they returned I was about to tell them what I would like but they didn't ask, they just sat the cup down and turned right around to assist the table behind us. I figured no big deal it's a busy night, we had a party of six so surly they would return shortly. They did not. Someone at the other end of the table had to wave the waiter down just to order another drink. Unfortunately the person who got the waiters attention didn't know I had not ordered yet so, once again, the waiter got the persons order and quickly left.... I was getting really hungry and a little upset. Again, I understood that the place was busy and maybe they were short staffed but with a large table of 6, why wouldn't you ask if anyone else needed anything?? When the waiter returned with the other persons drink order I waved my hand in the air like I was in elementary school again. I don't know how but the waiter did not even see me. Dropped off the drink and left. At this point everyone was wrapping up their final drinks or last bites of their meals and if I ordered it would hold everyone up so I didn't even bother the next time the waiter came. Someone had to flag the waiter down just to get a to go box and our check. Took forever to come back and get our credit card too. Again, I totally understand being short staffed during this hard time but still, at least ask if anyone else at the table needs anything before running away.

Yelp
Stopped by amidst errands in the neighborhood for a quick lunch. The korean chicken sandwich was crispy and spicy, really quite good. Too many things to do to partake in brews but there was a great variety offered so I'll have to stop in again sometime.
google avatar

Kelly A.

Yelp
Poutine: Most places dump oversalted gravy on undercooked fries... Not here! So good and decent happy hour too! Good vibes/atmosphere.
google avatar

Thomas O.

Yelp
Downtown for lunch and we stumbled onto this reall cool pub. No too crowded considering the amazing lunch deal, like step back 20 years ago inexpensive. The bar is SO COOL and comfortable inside. I felt so at home! The food was pretty darn good, and the only problem was it took 40 minutes (FOURTY) to get my burger.. So long, that I had to feed the parking meter before I got to feed me... The wait staff was SUPER friendly and attentive to our little group. So, will we be back? If we have time to wait: heck yeah!!
google avatar

Joey R.

Yelp
Great patio but the food is typical bar food nothing stand out, the staff seem overworked but friendly! Not sure what changed but use to have better food and faster service. Great place to bar hop on broadway

Stephanie H.

Yelp
Food was absolute trash. Drinks were too. Would not return. The atmosphere looked cool but not a very social bar

Krista K.

Yelp
decided on this local Patriots bar all because of the rooftop seen while walking the block. The beer cheese was SO GOOOOOD!
google avatar

Amy D.

Yelp
Excellent experience on the patio! Went around 6:30 on a Weds, had our choice of spots upstairs... we received pretty quick service, everything was extremely clean and organized. We ordered drinks, shared an app and entree. I was extremely happy with all! The staff was happy and attentive. The atmosphere was fun and upbeat. 10/10 would recommend to others, please try for yourself!
google avatar

Brena E.

Yelp
This is a casual seat yourself place. When I was there on a Tuesday (I think that's the right night), there looked to just be one bartender working, but he pretty much immediately got me a water, gave me a sample of a beer that I wanted to try, and brought out my drink. It wasn't super busy, but that's still a lot for one person and he was very on top of it. They had inexpensive tacos for a special (I think they were only a dollar) that had a lot of meat, so it was a very good deal. Nothing fancy, but a good place to grab some beer and food.
google avatar

Kaity K.

Yelp
Love this place! It has a lovely rooftop bar with lots of seating and TVs to watch sports on (my boyfriend loved this haha). Everything is priced really reasonably and the food was delicious. I had the PB&J burger but subbed a veggie patty for the beef one, and it was delicious. My boyfriend created his own burger (an option on the menu) and he loved it as well. It was really filling and a large portion size so you definitely get bang for your buck. The cocktails are also really nice, I can't wait to go back and try more of their options! I also really like how most things here are locally or Colorado-sourced. It's a super cool and unique place! I'm looking forward to bringing friends and family that visit here, and will be back soon!
google avatar

Yelp
always been one of our favorite places... esp. when they had the 6 dollar lunch burger special. it's 14 something now (thanks COVID and inflation lol) GREAT rooftop patio with TVs - the misters are killer. they do bar service right now just so you know.but food quality still great. Just had brunch (biscuits and gravy and the breakfast burrito are still killer) staff is reduced due to difficulties in Denver finding staff but the folks that are here are wonderful. (last two visits in three weeks we've had the absolute pleasure of having Ralmond as our rooftop bartender- the best!) Still one of our favorites for sure.

Kristen B.

Yelp
We love historians! The interior includes beautiful wood booths and a rooftop that is awesome during the summer. The service is always fast, the drinks are great and the prices are cheap. If you haven't been for brunch and bottomless mimosas, definitely check it out!!
google avatar

Nino R.

Yelp
Food was pretty good. I went with a group that used to frequent this place years ago and they didn't have fond memories. But they did a 180 during our group visit. The food was good! We all had sandwiches and no one had anything critical to share. Thumbs up! The only pain point was staffing. Only one bartender for all bar seats and tables in dining room. It was wild. We're talking about 1 person handling nearly 50 customers. Those odds are not good for either party. But other than that sh!t show, it's was a good experience. I'd go back...
google avatar

Devon D.

Yelp
Visited Historians a week or two ago for brunch, we were hankering for a new place to visit and I had heard good things from friends about this place so we decided to take a swing, we ended up on the rooftop patio next to the fireplace. All in all our experience was a very positive one, we sat on the roof for one of the rare winter warm-ish days of the season, the food was great and service was very attentive and friendly. I do, however, have minor critiques of Historians, the menu seemed a little small for brunch, with only 8 options to choose from, I would say adding one or two more options would add a little more variety, maybe adding chilaquiles or some other egg-based variation to the menu would be a welcome addition. Additionally, if you're going to offer pancakes, maybe offer french toast as a similar option, again, minor suggestions to take way, hardly anything major. At the end of the day we had a very good experience and will be back again! Protip: if you're looking to avoid the parking meters along broadway, go a few blocks to the east and you can find plentiful unrestricted parking, if you're having a good time with friends, it helps to not have to worry about when to come back to feed the meter!

Yelp
First day back at the historian. Have a really good protection plan for Covid. Free masks, hand sanitizer and a sign up sheet for notifications on the subject. Burger was great besides my lady ordering medium and it not coming that way Love this place and feels good to be back

Scott H.

Yelp
Used to be an awesome place for lunch , burger fries and a 10 oz beer under 10 bucks .. now 25 bucks Come on man ‍

Brian B.

Yelp
The new food and drink ordering system is horrible. We spent more time waiting in line to place our food order and refill drinks and then waiting to get our check than we did eating and drinking. There was 1 person waiting on everyone upstairs on a Saturday afternoon. The food and atmosphere is great but we won't be back until they work out the the service part. Also, what's with the "service fee"?
google avatar

Marissa F.

Yelp
Really fun place for Sunday Funday. $12 bottomless mimosas and $8 bloody marys. The brunch entrees are spot on. We had the Huevos Rancheros, Build-Your-Own-Burger, Spanish Hangover and the Breakfast Burrito. All delicious! Also got the chips and salsa/guacamole to start and it was tasty. Great service by our server, Alexa. Food came out super quick. Restrooms were very clean (weird but it's always something I notice lol). Check this place out if you are in Denver.

Ben J.

Yelp
For a place with only bar service, it's odd to get charged an undisclosed (on the online menu) "service fee." Apparently it's on the hard copy but it's shady business to not show it on the only menu (QR code) I was provided. Decent beer selection and friendly service, but the prices are steep even after happy hour discounts.
google avatar

Tasha J.

Yelp
There is no better place to hang out on a 70 degree day in February. Historians has a fantastic rooftop patio and weekend brunch specials are awesome. I had the $10 bottomless mimosas and my friends the $5 build your own bloody marys. The drinks and atmosphere are the best. The food isn't bad and it's not spectacular either. It's pretty good for the price point. I had the burger without the bun. This came with a side of fries that couldn't be substituted. I thought this was a bit weird because all I wanted was a side salad. The waitress said they don't allow substitutions on the weekend. The burger was probably a frozen patty because it was a bit a sad. My friends had the breakfast burritos and the Spanish Hangover. The burrito looked really good but could use a bit more flavor. The Spanish Hangover had creamed potatoes and with over easy eggs, came out a bit soupy. The biscuit was a highlight of that dish. Overall, historians is def worth going to. Everyone will have fun and this place is a good value.

Yelp
On Saturday night my group and I were getting drinks on their roof top. The server was unquestionably rude to everyone. But as a black female I felt like I was taking on more than my fair share of rudeness. She insisted on giving me a receipt after each drink I ordered. No one else at the table was given the same treatment. Her rational was that "I was the last person to get there so I must want to leave first". I told her that it was It okay I wasn't in a rush but she still proceeded to do it. I cant say for sure if this was a racist act but I was being singled out for one reason or another.

Zach J.

Yelp
Awful service, had a great lunch special. Pricing is out of control. I will miss the hamburgers and fries.

Yelp
This is a great bar and burger joint on S Broadway. The first floor is tall and spacious with ample seating both at the bar and along the wall. The real gem is the rooftop patio. There is limited seating and I could see this place getting packed on a summer weekend. We were there for lunch on Labor Day and had plenty of seating options. There are misters as well as there aren't many shaded areas (and no, dogs are not allowed). There are tons of taps to choose from which range from sours to hoppy IPAs - most seem to be from Colorado, which is cool. I recommend the Juicy Gold for a citrusy IPA. We ordered burgers to go - the Southwestern and two Build Your Own. They are served in brown butchers paper tied with a string (regardless of eat-in or takeway). Adorable! My BYO was beef cooked medium rare with american cheese, onions, and chipotle aioli served on a brioche bun. SO delicious. You can opt for salad, fries or sweet potato fries on the side and they do have veggie and chicken burger options. I went regular and my husband went sweet potato. Both were delicious, though I think the regular ones get a little soggy if you take them to go and don't open the packaging up right away. They're still chewy and have parts of the potato peel on them - just the way I like them. Despite not being totally overwhelmed with customers, the service was a little inattentive. Be prepared to be patient. Overall, solid experience.
