A Vegan Fast Food Superstar Calls It Quits | Eater Portland

"Smash burger phenom closed after seven years in business—three of them inside the former Brunch Box space on Southeast Morrison—having evolved from a food cart into a restaurant that was a local innovator in the burger game and a mainstay for fries and shakes; as the Oregonian reported, the operation’s savings had run dry." - Paolo Bicchieri

Google
This place lives up to its name and is my absolute breakfast fav in the Denver metro area. Amazing breakfast and lunch menu (DO NOT miss their award-winning green chili sauce), awesome staff (shout-out to the incomparable Michelle), and a authentic diner vibe. Just go.

Google
First visit. Such incredible hospitality… quality food, great service, clean joint. I’ll be back again soon. This is old school food. Not for those looking for average chain restaurant food. This is the real deal. Support local.

Amanda B.

Google
The food tasted great, large portions, actually too much for me, prices are reasonable. I had 2 eggs with sausage and hash browns (they were my fav) my companion had an omelette which was also huge and pancakes which were light and fluffy

Armando De L.

Google
This was my first time there my servers name was Amanda. She was great. The food was delicious it is a place that I will definitely go back to, many times.

Google
Great diner! Its what you look for in a spot. Large menu, walking to the restroom everyone's dishes looked great. They do their own hot sauce, ask for the Reaper if you really like spice. It starts sweet but has a kick! Service was spot on, I'll be back with my wife to try their chilli rellenos!

Google
Wow. I was recommended Hits the Spot Diner by my Airbnb host, and she did not miss with this one. My boyfriend and I are visiting Colorado from DC, and we love a good diner moment— I don’t think we will be able to top this one, ever. The flavors of every little ingredient blended together really ‘hit the spot’ and I’m still in awe of how much food was on each plate. So sad I can only come when visiting CO. I will be honest, there was a bit of a wait for everything. This is where great customer service can make it all worth it, and thankfully we were there during Michelle’s shift. Her positive smile and attentiveness amongst the slightly chaotic Saturday morning rush was much appreciated and really highlighted our experience. As well as the fantastic food of course. Michelle, THANK YOU for doing an amazing job!

Google
Yummy breakfast omelette with bacon and tomato, heat biscuit and gravy, iced tea, pancakes were very nicely done. Wonderful family vibe. Definitely go for it! Update: Has such a great breakfast a while back that we went back for lunch. Disappointed in the hot open turkey sandwich. Very light on the turkey (though it was fresh and seemed homemade), mashed potatoes were replete with huge chunks of unmashed lumps (I generally don’t mind lumpy mashed potatoes, but this was over the top), and smothered in brown, beef gravy - an incongruous combination. My fault in assuming it would be a turkey gravy, but I should have asked - really, Erik, the menu seemed to say it would be between so duh on me - but I held out an assuming hope. Texas toast it was on was good. No veggie side. Still very friendly service. I’m keeping my star rating, but keep this in mind.

Google
Hot damn. Great food and service. 11/10. I got my breakfast burrito covered half green and half red chili to try them both.

Yelp
Quite possibly the best brekkie spot in the Denver area. JMO. It's classic diner food with a back in the day vibe. Owners Manuel and Trish know what they are doing and when things work well no need to improve a thing. We went for the first time for breakfast and then went back the next day because we loved it so much. You'll find Manuel in the kitchen most days and sometimes both. Get the Everyone's Favorite Scrambler chock full of bacon, ham, sausage, onions, peppers, cheddar. I ate super slow cuz I didn't want it to end. Every bite had the perfect amount of everything. Also tried the Santa Fe Skillet with sausage, onions and jalapeños. Smothered with an amazing green chile (folks are particular about chile and here it's ON POINT! Combine all this with good coffee and toast selections and it's a winner. The staff is outstanding and consistently friendly. The whole place is clean and spotless including the restrooms. Ample parking. Only thing I'd change is for them to find additional capable staff for the kitchen so Manuel and Trish could get a day off once in a while! Definitely our new go to. Will be back...and back....

Yelp
Great old diner. It reminds me of the spots from my childhood. Food is good and portions are decent. It definitely hits the spot!
google avatar

Sara D.

Yelp
Ohhh it definitely HITS THE SPOT. Perfect over medium eggs (most places can't get them medium). They got the best bacon! We had a long wait but the waitress was on top of it. Has the classic diner feel. Worth the wait on a Saturday morning.

Same M.

Yelp
The place is in need of a renovation. The diner smelt of cigarettes. I ordered a veggie omelet supposedly 3 eggs but must be from miniature chickens - the omelet was as thin as rice paper and had a funny burnt taste . The veggies inside were the best part. However the imitation cheese totally destroyed the omelet. The side said hash browns but they were cut potatoes. The coffee was decent. The place had dust and covwebs throughout the restaurant., and water damage on the ceiling. Service wasn't horrible but it wasn't great either. Parking was also difficult due to construction.

Yelp
Hits the spot , always busy great food portions are hige always ! Love this place but the main reason is Michelle ask for and youll understand .friendly , bubbly personality, welcoming , and always done with a huge smile , We all have problems in life maybe even her , but she doesnt show it everything she does she does with a smile ! Always malw me feel special . This alone is worth the stop at Hots the spot diner . Highly recommend and always ask for Michelle. Happy eating !
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing and abundant food! We couldn't be happier with the experience. This was a Saturday morning at about 1130. Noise level was loud, but we somehow were able to talk. I ordered a club sandwich with fries on wheat toast, but there was so much food that I could not finish it. Took the other half home.
google avatar

Scott L.

Yelp
Love sitting at a diner. Extra attention from Michelle, and all the kind ladies waiting on me. Food was terrific and indeed hit the spot. Since I got the Rellano breakfast burrito. I'll need to return to sample biscuits and gravy. Ambiance at the counter of a deli or diner is usually good. No exceptions here.

Derak K.

Yelp
So went to pull out jellies to get them ready for my toast and was greeted by these folks. Cockroachs not sure why it won't post the picture Shitty diner on Colfax when brought to owners attention he said that I didn't have to eat here. Also if you ever see a picture of the cook/owner he's never wearing gloves
google avatar

Maryanne L.

Yelp
Old school diner perfect for breakfast any day of the week. Breakfast potatoes are exceptionally yummy. Service is fast and friendly. Oh and the coffee is better than your average diner coffee. So happy to have found this little gem in my new neighborhood.
google avatar

Liz M.

Yelp
The food is so good, comfort food. The service is unmatched. The prices are great. There is so much to choose from. Very cute inside. Always clean.

Nicholas B.

Yelp
I've been going here for years. Great staff, low prices, big portions, what else do you want?
google avatar

Sumner H.

Yelp
We enjoyed this place! We were headed toward Sloane's Lake for a walk, and decided to stop here for breakfast first. We had to wait in a short line in the covered porch, but it was probably just about 10-15 minutes. So many great-looking choices on the menu, but we were able to pick out our favorite breakfast to share, from amongst all the choices. The staff was busy but cordial. We were glad to find a parking spot in the small lot behind the building.

Darla W.

Yelp
Ordered breakfast was good . didn't like the sausage links they tasted weird other than that hash browns were great
google avatar

Veronica V.

Yelp
My sister wanted something good to eat and she had been here a few times and said it was good with good service. The food was really good! I had the chorizo skillet, so yummy the only complaint I have with mine was that it was super spicy (I like spicy so for me to say that, it's spicy). Still super flavorful and that green chili sauce, YUMMY! My brother got chicken fried steak and eggs with hash browns and biscuits and gravy, can we just say how yummy that all looked. The outside of this place looks dingy but the inside was ok. Our waitress was horrible, never smiling always looking like she didn't want to be waiting on us and always disappearing. We wish we had the blonde lady who was always smiling and checking on her tables.

Phil L.

Yelp
I have been going here every Sunday morning for at least 15 yrs. I order the same thing every time....cheddar cheese omelet smothered in green chili. It is the best green chili on earth. The hash browns (sliced potatoes) are phenomenal. When I was a child my parents would go here occasionally. It was called the Doll House Cafe. So fun that 60 yrs later my childhood memory still exists. It's everything you could want from a diner. Huge portions, great service and very reasonably priced.
google avatar

Matthew C.

Yelp
Food is always incredible! Came here for my birthday so that I could enjoy a birthday breakfast. Hits the spot, every time! Service is great. Always attentative and you coffee cup is rarely ever empty. Ambiance could be better, but it's a diner and I love the dinginess.

Justin S.

Yelp
This place always seems crowded but that's because everything on their huge menu is delicious. Seriously, you can't go wrong with whatever you pick. The staff is always hopping and will take good care of you.

Mike B.

Yelp
The food was OK but the service was not even close to poor I looked like it was her first day on the job I won't be back
google avatar

Craig B.

Yelp
Great food and service. A nostalgic diner with a large menu. Michelle is always great and prices are in-line with the economy. NOT a chain. Cool old decor and there's never a dull moment on Colfax!
google avatar

Steve M.

Yelp
Just a great diner! Huge portions and tasty food all around. If you like the old timey diner vibe, you will dig this place.
google avatar

Christine H.

Yelp
Arriving early in Denver, Bestie suggested this lil diner, saying it was the best in town. And it was! The early birds were already there when we found a booth. Clean, old time vibe, very relaxed. Nice staff. Good portions. And the best green chili ever!
google avatar

Janet D.

Yelp
Hits The Spot can do what their name says. Hit that hungry spot!! A no fuss spot for breakfast and so affordable! Everything that you see on this review was $20 minus the tip! The food is straight up basic breakfast and tasty! No complain here! The staff are seasoned and attentive! I like looked around and noticed photos of old Hollywood stars from lone ago. Also, this diner is frequented by regulars. Love it! My special pancake was fluffy. My eggs came as requested ; over medium. My sausage although nothing to boast about in size was what sausage should be! seasoned well! So if you're looking for a bfast spot while you're in the west side do not hesitate to stop by and try this folks!

Yelp
My family who is from the area wanted to meet up and eat some really good food and at first I was skeptical because they said the portions of the food was so much that you're gonna need a to-go box and I was like yeah right. As soon as I got my food I had to say I was wrong. Everything was so good and I would definitely come back for more. The service was amazing, it was pretty busy so we had to wait but as soon as we were seated our order was taken and we got our food just as fast. It felt like a true dinner, wonderful waitresses, great decorations, I love the pie container by the checkout desk.
google avatar

Sara N.

Yelp
This place is a gem on Colfax. They do not have a dinner shift and the menu is huge. The service was fast and even packed, the kitchen was cranking out orders. The parking can be a problem as there isn't a lot of it but hopefully you are lucky enough to get a close spot. There are a ton of options on the kids menu as well. It is easy to miss but if you're looking for a breakfast spot, try this place.

Yelp
ATTN SOUTHERNERS: CHICKEN-FRIED CHICKEN IS HERE! Huddled in the bottom of the steak & eggs part of the menu- a rare delicacy here in Denver can be found. It's truly exactly the chicken fried chicken you used to get at your old hometown southern diner. Covered in country gravy it's well-seasoned, crispy outside juicy flavorful chicken inside. Served with 2 eggs your way (also under gravy) and home friend potatoes which are themselves remarkably tasty. I have been searching for C.F. chicken for months now, and my first bite resulted in a fist pump into the air. It's such a taste of home.

Yelp
We heard from several people that we HAD to check out Hits The Spot. We finally stopped in last Saturday to see what all of the fuss was about. The wait was roughly 45 minutes, which people told us that was longer than usual. I think we also caught them at a crazy time with the end of breakfast and beginning of lunch around 11:45 ish. All good! We were seated in the booth next to the front door which made for a chilly time each time someone opened the door and stood there while it was snowing outside. That is the restaurants fault, just complaining that people would be more aware that they are letting all of the hot air out and making everyone by the door freezing. I am sure if we were farther back in the restaurant we wouldn't even have noticed the waves of cold air. The menu is rather large and I was struggling between breakfast and lunch. I did know that I was feeling like a fountain Dr. Pepper (nursing a hangover) and they instead had Mr. Pibb which was even better. More sugar to cure me. Lol. The server was amazing. She was quick with refills, checking if we wanted anything else, making sure the food and the 40,000 condiments on the table was good enough for us, etc. She handle the craziness very well and you wouldn't even had known that she had other tables. I stuck with breakfast because as my husband pointed out, that IS why we were there. We just got there later than expected. S breakfast it was and I still couldn't make up my mind. I went with the egg and meat plate that comes with potatoes and bread. I got the eggs sunny side up, hash browns that were amazing, sausage patties and the biscuits and gravy, but because I couldn't fully make up my mind I also got the sausage links. way too much food for me but I knew all of this would make fantastic leftovers.... and they did. I loved all of it. The sausage patties were my favorite. My husband got the polish sausage skillet with the pancakes and added peanut butter chips to it. SO MUCH FOOD! Totally worth the price. I am so glad I listened to that random customer at Candlelight Tavern telling the bartender about this place. Then it was on my radar and heard more and more about it. We are definitely coming back to get lunch and more. This place is great! Oh, and something I learned while there. The owner is also the chef, so that is why they are closed on Tuesday so he can have a day off. He does a fantastic job!

Yelp
This I believe is the best place to go for food. I have never been disappointed. am an older person and do not eat much. I ordered the Breakfast Burrito on Saturday, ate about 1/3 took the rest home. Sunday morning, I ate another 1/3. Then today I brought it to work, and I ate the last of it. Besides great food the servers are the best, friendly and very efficient, making sure your beverage is always full. I have never had a bad experience that i have been going there. 5 Stars from me.

Yelp
I LOVE this place. I've been a couple times and it HITS THE SPOT always. Never too long of a wait for the most part, lovely servers and staff, the melodic clanging of dishes in the background. The food never disappoints. Seriously. Diners are my favorite, and this is my favorite favorite.

Rebeca O.

Yelp
This place legit hits the spot, friendly staff with good service and great food at a good price. This place is an awesome diner. Would recommend to anyone looking for a reliable brunch spot!

Stuart L.

Yelp
A great cafe. Food and staff are excellent. Have an especial enthusiam for the Number 1 chili dog and French Toast.
google avatar

Yelp
Definitely " Hits the spot " My Gf & I split the " Biggest breakfast plate " everything that was on our plate was highly satisfactory, pancakes were fluffy and melt in your mouth, coffee cups are a good size with plenty of coffee to consume, our server was extra energetic and kept us happy OH & the pricing was sooper wallet compatible!!... So if you're definitely in this area THIS IS A M U S T !!! Cheers...

Bill M.

Yelp
Good old fashioned diner to have breakfast. Portions were very generous. Enjoyed the experience. Was somewhat loud because of the acoustics. Service was very good

Susan O.

Yelp
Had a great breakfast. Both of us had chicken fried chicken. The chicken was crispy the eggs cooked perfectly. The hash browns were seasoned really well. Waitress was very friendly and helpful. She actually brought us a sample of the green chili. Which was very good! We will definitely be back.
google avatar

Evan N.

Yelp
Near perfection diner. No frills, just classic breakfast food at an affordable price. Getting a side of green chili to dip bites into is definitely the move.

Gabe M.

Yelp
Awesome neighborhood diner with great food and service! The entire staff is always cheerful and welcoming every time I go there.
google avatar

Nicole T.

Yelp
Stopped in for a quick breakfast. This is a busy little diner. We seated ourselves and were greeted by our waitress shortly afterwards. She was very friendly and brought us drinks right away. I ordered the 2-2-2 breakfast. The eggs and bacon were just right. The side of pancakes was HUGE but they lacked flavor and the syrup wasn't very good. It didn't offer the sweet flavor I would expect from a syrup.
google avatar

Robert W.

Yelp
My favorite Denver diner. Solid food, reasonably priced and excellent service I'm a huge fan of the Country Benedict.
google avatar

Karen N.

Yelp
Food was excellent and so filling. I got the Mexican Steak and Eggs and a side of pancakes. 10/10 would recommend! Very casual spot, we came early (around 9a on a Sunday) and didn't have to wait for a table, by the time we left they had a bit of a wait.
google avatar

Mathew S.

Yelp
My favorite chef isn't Gordon Ramsay or Bobby Flay, it's the chef at Hits the Spot Diner. With a menu that's 4000 dishes long and unlimited variations, this one dude is reading tickets from a mile away, and spinning in circles while doling out bacon and sausages left and right. He's a wrecking crew delivering perfectly chicken fried steak to me every time I sit down. I had breakfast here this morning for the 80th time and again, it hit the spot.
google avatar

Justin G.

Yelp
I came last month in January 2023, where I ordered huevos rancheros. I thought it was okay, but not great. I thought it was way too saucy, and I would have preferred my hash browns to be shredded. I'd recommend Doug's Diner to be the definitive place to get breakfast in the Denver area and throughout northern Colorado. I do remember the food coming at a quick pace, so that was nice.

Lisa S.

Yelp
Has just about anything you'd want. The Colfax scramble is one of my go to's. The service is amazing.
google avatar

Jerry S.

Yelp
Very good food excellent service , everything I have tried is delicious and I'm picky
google avatar

Yelp
My favorite diner! The food is always delicious and the servers are some of the friendliest in the business. Especially Michelle! They truly keep me coming back. The reason I'm docking a star is the wait times are awful, which isn't their fault because business is booming. However, we had had multiple issues with the hostess. Perhaps she gets stressed out with all the people coming in but she can be rude at times. She has also failed to call our name or really look for us in the waiting area (we've seen people go out there before to look for waiting parties.) on more than one occasion. They take your phone number to contact you if they can't find you but we've learned to ask them to repeat the number because the hostess won't verify it with you. She'll jot down what she hears and call it a day. If they have the wrong number, well sorry you're outta luck. Twice did she write the wrong number, did not once call out our name, and we just sat there waiting until we had to get up to ask what was taking so long. Other than that, great breakfast place.
google avatar

Christina H.

Yelp
If you're looking for a hearty diner breakfast that's cheap but good, this is your place. Just like the name says - hits the spot!!! Great hangover cure or post hike refuel. If you're thinking about going, just do it. It's the best hole in the wall spot. If i lived in Denver, I would be stopping here regularly! Many of the meals come with a side of short stack pancakes, so you will not leave this place hungry. I recommend the Everything Omelet!
google avatar

O Q.

Yelp
Breakfast was very good with decently-sized portions. Self seating when not busy with fast, friendly service. Modern diner feel has counter seating as well.

Marc L.

Yelp
Great for breakfast and friendly servers. Greek influence as well. Simple but adequate presentation.
google avatar

Diana O.

Yelp
Love this restaurant! My boyfriend and I go here often for brunch & we are never disappointed. The steak and mushroom skillet + sub in some french toast - so soo good! So many great options though! We have yet to try the lunch menu lol the breakfast options are just too good, it's hard to switch it up. We recommend this place to all of our visiting family & friends. The BEST brunch in town!
google avatar

Kallee B.

Yelp
I have been here twice and have loved it both times. Both times I got the cinnamon roll French toast with bacon and it was amazing. The waitress remembered me the second time I came in and is very sweet and kind. Both times I went here I drove a ways to come here, it's really good and a true "diner" feel.
google avatar

Yelp
Omgosh if ur visiting, passing by or a local. Stop by to get one of the best meals ever. Freshly made and meatlious. The menu is impressive, hard to decide what to have cause I wanted the whole menu. At least the family let me have a taste of everything they had. Lol...
