Hitsuji Doughnuts

Been to this shop a few times, and it has the best donuts amongst all the competitors I tried. My recommendation is to come on Thursday when the queue is not hours-long. But not too late — even on a Thursday, they were sold out by 4pm. My personal favourites are the wasanbon and chocolate, which I had twice. My recommendation is to eat in because the donuts lose their texture fast when cooled. You can see them subtly getting harder (my fingers don’t squish them as much) as I ate the three I got today. It’s not just exceptionally light (+Coffee’s is actually lighter), but more importantly with an exceptional rebound on each bite. Not just chewy like a mochi but with that “QQ” spring on each bite. I’ve been raving to everyone who would listen about this donut shop for years. Their queue is well deserved.

Crispy on the outside but soft on the inside. Light and airy. Chocolate was the best. Earl grey cream cheese was great too. The doughnuts were so good that we went here two days in a row 🤤 The best donut I've had in my life!

After almost 2 years of passing in front of the shop and deterred by the insanely long queue, today… FINALLY! By a stroke of luck, a rather quiet day, around 13:00h (5 people in front of me), took 15min to order 5 donuts (max allowed per person). Had to return at 15:30h to pick them up. By the time I finished paying, there were 8 people queuing. Returned home, and cycled back 2.5hours later to pick them up, waited for them to be freshly fried and dusted. Please wait 5 minutes to eat them, the lady said. Very unfortunately, they’re totally worth the effort. 😅 Coming from a person who doesn’t really love donuts, I LOVED these donuts. Best I’ve ever had, especially the wasenbon sugar 😭 delicious!!! The question remains, will we ever get to eat them again? 🤣

Still my favourite doughnut in Kyoto, two years later. Hot doughnuts with a mochi mochi texture , filled with a chocolatey dough, dusted with cocoa powder and sugar.

I showed up around 10:15 and the woman in front of me took the final ticket of the day. I was so devastated ( first world problems). However, I was told that if I returned around 1:25 I might have a chance at getting leftover donuts. I returned around 1:05 and was super lucky because I was able to purchase donuts without having a ticket. I purchased the chocolate custard donut, Earl grey cream cheese and kinako black bean donut. Each donut is super fluffy and light and not too sweet they are baked to perfection with care. They also give you directions on how to heat up the donut if you don't eat it immediately as well as a packet of sugary coating to freshly dust your donuts to your own liking. The earl grey cream cheese was my personal favorite it was not too sweet and the tartness of the cream cheese was just perfect with the aromatic flavor of the Earl grey 🩶. I also befriended a very lovely lady who was a customer in front of me and it just made my day even though I was sad in the initially because I didn't get a ticket lol.

Probably the best best donut ever!! Queued for about an hour even thou I reached around 30mins before they open. No regrets 🤤 super duper chewy, soft and light donut! Love the chocolate custard 😍 I should buy more than 3 🥲

Best donuts I've had in Japan by far. It's only a shame that they're so difficult to get! I hope to come back again.
