I have been going here for a while, back when it was still called benna's but something happened today that made me never want to come back. i had just arrived, put my stuff down on a table, and went outside to smoke a cigarette while i debated what i wanted to order. one of the employees stuck their head out the door and said "are you going to order something?" to which i quickly responded yes because i was embarrassed and caught off guard. There were only maybe three customers but it was still really uncomfortable to be called out in this manner in front of them. I was flustered and just went inside, grabbed my backpack, and walked to another coffee shop a few blocks away to get my breakfast.
I go here all the time to wait for my ride to/from work and although I usually only get coffee as opposed to those who get food, maybe they're more valued as customers- I don't really know. Full disclosure, there have been some occasions where I'm not in the mood for coffee so I just sit and quietly read while I wait for my coworker to pick me up but i have never taken up a table or a seat over a paying customer if I am just waiting (but typically there are plenty of empty seats) and I always make sure to leave the area where I was sitting clean. Maybe I'm wrong, but being a semi regular customer I figured that it wasn't a big deal to sit inside and read while I wait since it's cold outside and it's nice to be around other people. I have never had this issue in any other cafe or coffee shop where I have done the same thing. if I'm in the wrong here, I'd be the first one to apologize but I felt like the way they handled it was wrong. If they had such an issue with me waiting inside for a ride, I feel that they could have just said something to me quietly instead of just opening the door and sticking their head out so everyone could hear. plus it gave the wrong impression that I'm not a paying customer which I am more times than I'm not.
The whole thing just made me feel so bad and uncomfortable that I decided just to never go back there. I was fighting back tears as I walked out as I already have social anxiety and being embarrassed publicly and being made to look like a bum or something who doesn't buy things from them made me feel awful. When I got to the other coffee shop today I told them what happened and they agreed with me that it was uncalled for and they had no issue with a semi regular customer sitting in the coffee shop without buying something sometimes because they understand that sometimes people have to wait for a ride or something and don't want to be freezing outside. plus they want them to feel comfortable and continue being a customer. i don't know if i can mention the other coffee shop by name but it's on 15th street and the employees there are amazing, make you feel welcome, and most importantly, treat you with respect. even though it's a little out of the way for me, i'll be strictly going there from now on.
