On the Grid : Good Fortune

"Good Fortune is an experience. In it’s walls you can find anything from Japanese seaweed snacks to dragon fruit, from lovely and fresh fish to bull frogs—no lie. Their prices are extremely competitive for all sorts of exotic ingredients if you are an experimental cook, or even if you’re looking for a nice head of broccoli. Most of the staff does not speak English, but they do have a friendly customer service area that will get you what you need." - the serif design

Always selling expired product! I bought on 4/15 without noticing the yogurt had expired 2 weeks already. Lucky that I didn't get diarrhea after eating it.

Bustling Market. Has the basics and the extraordinary all in one location. This place is busy and the aisles can be tight, keep it moving. The fruit and vegetables impressed me, as did most of the prices. Was able to pick up both food and pottery for small lunar celebration. Employees work hard and keep the store running well, will be back.

HL Supermarket is extremely clean. The employees are nice and helpful. Even though they have a lot of seafood I did not notice any smell. I highly recommend shopping here.

Place is quite big they got a few locations it smells as bad as other typical Chinese grocery price can be fair to high depending on the demand and there is always a secret agent there to check your receipt after you shopped

Great quality and variety, best place to get seasonal fruit

The parking lot is OK, the hygiene in the supermarket is not very good, the meat factory masters are not bad, the food is good, the fruit is good and bad, the first time I know that buying fruit also needs to see luck, sometimes the appearance of buying is good, the inner is rotten. ಥ_ಥ

Wide variety of fruits, vegetables, meats and seafood. Always fresh and the prices are very competitive. The weekly specials are great too. Imported goods are pricey but that's to be expected, and I can get many things here for less than I'd pay at H-Mart. Good selection of bagged tea, bottled tea, and powdered teas. Bring your own bags!

Google
One of the better Asian markets in the neighborhood. The fish and meat are fresh and prices are fair. Parking is not the easiest and cleanliness isn’t too too, but overall ok. Not the widest selection as in other markets in the area but you get 80-90% of what you’ll look for always. Checkout was fast and they even accept Apple Pay.

Yelp
DON'T GO HERE UNLESS YOU SPEAK MANDARIN! I was discriminated against when I asked for ice in Cantonese and then English from the fish department workers. The staff told me in mandarin to "speak in mandarin because I'm Chinese"; then his coworker said "speak mandarin" too. The worker laughed and looked at other customers to get their acknowledgments, but they ignored him. Ice, in mandarin and Cantonese is the same. The staffs were rude and prejudice. I left a message to a worker for the owner, the owner has yet to reply back after a month. People discriminate because of people like you.

Yelp
HL Supermarket is an excellent Chinese supermarket. They carry live seafood, meat, poultry, beverages, groceries, and SNACKS! Lots and lots of delicious Chinese snacks that some you can't even find in Chinatown's supermarket. And when you do, they're overpriced. But here at HL Supermarket, prices are lower and the quality is just as good! For instance, the Brown Sugar Pearl Milk Ice Bar here is at least $2 less than what they sell it for at Chinatown's supermarket. The seaweed here are 2 for $2.19! It is the best value I've seen in NYC! Everything just seems so clean, neat, organized, and affordable at HL Supermarket. It makes me happy. If you're looking for rice vinegar to make sushi, I recommend Mizkan Sushi Seasoning. It consists of invert sugar, water, distilled, vinegar, salt, rice vinegar, brown sugar, and monosodium glutamate. Whenever you see brown sugar, you know it's good stuff! I mean, look at Brown Sugar Pearl Milk! Popular as heck. My mom used my Mizkan Sushi Seasoning to make hot and sour soup and she says this vinegar is absolutely amazing! She could tell right away that it's different from all the other rice vinegar she had used in the past. It's also makes a delicious dressing for your salads! I would not recommend buying the Yaki Sushi Nori roasted seaweed that I took a picture of. It doesn't have the seaweed aroma and it was not crispy. Also very hard to bite off. The fishsnacks and minion fruit snacks were delicious though! They also have a variety of korean instant noodles that they sell in H Mart at the long island location. This place is great! I can't wait to come back and take some of my families with me.

Yelp
This is a supermarket that is close to Borough Park as the ones in Borough Park are small grocery stalls competing with each other. When I entered, I saw that there are Yeo's soymilk that is on sale, where they are two for $1.09 given its size.

Yelp
Came here to purchase grocery essentials and left getting a lot more snacks than I can handle. Produced were fully stocked along with fresh fruits on the inner aisles. Weekdays aren't as crowded and people do tend to keep social distance. Meat department was a bit in disarray, people standing all along the display counter just shouting out their orders. This supermarket has more snack brands to choose from, which keeps me coming back for more.

Yelp
This used to be called Good Fortune market but when I came by recently with my husband, we noticed the name changed. It seems like for every $50 purchase, they give you a free red tote bag with their name on it. We had spent $168 the first time and received 3 bags... you can buy the bag for $1 which are actually nice. They had some more options here than found at JMart or Fei Long market. It was a nice change of pace to visit this market after shopping at Fei Long for the longest time. Long lines to the register is the norm. I finally was able to find a case of the grass jelly drink I like (I only like Taisun brand)!~

Yelp
Excellent 5 STARS customer services! We are blessed to have Asian HL supermarket in Staten Island. We definitely recommend to visit HL Supermarket. Thank you! Good Luck!

Yelp
I remember when this location was actually a movie theater. Although it's sad to see a theater go, this supermarket is a welcome addition to the border of Dyker. I'd say this is a pretty expansive Asian market with great prices. The highlight here, for me, is the selection of exotic fruits that I would normally have trouble finding at my go-to supermarket (like guava, passionfruit, dragonfruit) as well as the live seafood. On the Fourth it July weekend, my friend and I were able to each get 2 massive lobsters at $12 each. Not a bad deal, especially for something we rarely get a chance to eat. The frozen fish selection is also pretty good. We were able to find frozen whole squids and baby octopus at competitive prices. There is parking downstairs although it's very crowded. Still beats finding street parking in the area.

Yelp
First off, I'm a mixed Puerto Rican but I look white. I use to work at the movie theatre that's as here long ago. I remember all the iterations of this market including Good Fortune. I do not speak mandarin. That being said, I have had many many interactions with the staff but always chocked up their attitude with a language barrier. What I do is walk down each aisle and look at labels. Like Andrew Zimmerman said: if it looks good, eat it! The spice/tea aisle is intense. And the noodles and ramen are extensive. The meat and fish aisle is chaotic but when in Rome, jump in and order. Once I started acting like the other customers do, I was helped with no problem. I always say thank you and please as well(it's easy to learn those two words in mandarin btw)The boneless skinless chicken thighs are so much cheaper than in my local American market. Even though Fei long on 8th avenue has a larger produce section, this market has much wider aisles. So no bumping into stuff. Then the location is amazing, Three guys of Brooklyn is literally down the block and for a short 7 block walk so is Circus fruits. Both are on fort Hamilton parkway. They are both 24 hr produce stands that have sales weekly. But the Asian produce is well stocked and always fresh. You can smell how fresh the vegetables are. You just have to have patience and if you don't know what something is, take out your smart phone and google it. The whole market is packed every weekend with locals, which bodes well for the market. I would be concerned if the market was all gentrifiers and everyone spoke English. Instead, it's a culinary adventure. Eventhough it's packed, But they have a lot of cashiers to help you. Be careful though, you may go in for one thing and then blow your budget! One thing I do not recommend is, don't bother with the American food aisle, its the same stuff you see in every grocery store but with higher prices. But do get your local organic free range eggs here. Soy milk and tofu are also here for the vegans. There's also a bathroom but it's being your own toilet paper and I would recommend you stay far away..

Yelp
Ever since the Fortway movie theater closed, this space has been the home of many Chinese supermarkets - it was most recently Good Fortune, and before that Great Wall. Now it's very non-descriptively named HL Supermarket Inc. I can't help but compare it to Fei Long, which is my favorite Asian market in the area. Fei Long is better organized, has better produce, and overall is cheaper for most things. But HL takes American Express, has a pretty good selection of shelf-stable goods, and they have an indoor parking lot (but it's tiny). If you're in the area and for some reason, Fei Long is too far way, then sure, go to HL. Just go to Three Guys from Brooklyn down the block for your fresh produce though.

Yelp
This supermarket was named Good Fortune Supermarket not too long ago. Guessing they may have changed management, thus changed the name to HL Supermarket. The majority of the supermarket is the same as it was when it was called Good Fortune Supermarket. Same layout, same produce, snacks, seafood available. Bigger than the corner ones on 8th Avenue, but smaller than Fei Long. I love that there is free parking available as well.

Yelp
I've only ever come here a handful of times in the last 9yrs since I've been back home in NY. I'll be sure to find another store to shop at for my Asian specialty needs! Came in on Friday to pick up some sparerib sauce, Chinese mustard & duck sauce. The sparerib sauce was easy enough to find. The duck sauce and mustard were harder to find. I spent a good 15mins in the sauce aisle trying to find them. I finally saw a stock person coming down the aisle and politely said, "Excuse me. Do you have hot mustard?"; to which he replied very nasty, "WHAT?!?" (as if he had a disdain for a non-Chinese person, to speak to him, especially one speaking English). I repeated, "mustard, do you carry mustard?". My 2nd inquiry was responded to with a "I don't know what you said", him shaking his head and walking off from me. I found the duck sauce and proceeded to the register. After the cashier rang up my items and placed my 4 glass bottles in two little bags and leaving my plastic bottle of another sauce out next to them, I proceeded to the end of the register to put my card away so I could leave. Apparently, I wasn't getting myself together fast enough, so she pushed my items rather aggressively with the vegetables of the customer behind me. Mind you, there was enough room to place the next customer's items without even having to touch mine. I should have known better. The last time I was in the store a couple of months ago, I asked someone else who worked there for assistance with finding something and was met with the same nasty and aggressive tone. Bottom line, if you're a person not of Asian descent, find another Asian specialty store in which to patronize and spend your dollars!

Yelp
For this new/same market............ it may be the same. They've changed some isles around. The seafood section looks a little downgraded. Prices remained pretty much the same. I do miss Good Fortune though. 3 Guys for the best prices and produce however. Just past the park on the same side of the street.

Yelp
I go here weekly and spend an average of $200 on produce. Today I wanted to order 2 chunks of beef and have it grind. The people at the meat cutting section is overworked and extremely rude. They wanted me to paid at the counter before they grind the beef. This is unheard of.
