Hao Lu Old Town was a wonderful experience—full of charm, history, and atmosphere. The architecture is stunning, with beautifully preserved buildings that transport you back in time. Wandering through the narrow streets, you get a real sense of Vietnam’s rich cultural heritage. The area is well-maintained, with informative signage and friendly locals who are happy to share stories about the place. It’s an ideal spot for photography, quiet reflection, and learning more about the region’s past. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area and interested in something more authentic and peaceful.

I recommend getting there in time for sunset. It's amazing as the lights come on and the atmosphere just lifts. Lots of families and young people about. More tourist focussed food options but nice place to have a chilled tea or beer on the board walk.

We didn't realise how beautiful Hoa Lu old town is. The many food stalls are amazing and there's something for everyone. The beautiful pagodas on the river are spectacular. We would highly recommend visiting

Hoa Lu Old Town is absolutely stunning, especially at night. The streets come alive with colorful lights, creating a magical and vibrant atmosphere. The beautiful Buddhist temples, illuminated after dark, are truly a sight to behold — peaceful, intricate, and full of character. The night market adds even more charm, offering a lively mix of local foods, crafts, and souvenirs. It's the perfect place to take a stroll, soak in the culture, and enjoy the beauty of the town after sunset. Highly recommended for anyone visiting!

We visited Hoa Lu Ancient Town (Walking Street) on a Saturday, and I must say this is a very beautiful place with a small lake around the pagoda. You can also enjoy the stunning view from the Highland Coffee shop here. The walking street mainly starts at night, so there is no meaning in going before evening. At night, the street becomes so engaging and lively, with beautiful lights reflecting on the lake side by side, making it look magical. You shouldn’t miss this place at night if you are staying in Ninh Binh overnight. Highly recommended for a peaceful yet vibrant evening experience. 5/5

We visited at night and have our tea in one of the cafeterias. Plenty of places to eat and drinks from. The lights are so lively must be good visiting during day time as well. Worth a visit, magical place. Plenty of locals, a few families around who bring their own food and alcohol! Some setting are.

If you’re in Ninh Binh, make sure to visit Hoa Lu Old Town — especially at night. The entire area transforms into a magical lantern-lit walkway, with trees draped in glowing orbs and every shopfront adorned with warm lights. It’s peaceful yet full of charm, perfect for an evening stroll or riverside meal. The highlight for me was Tháp Tứ Ân, two towering red-brick temples set on water. They look impressive by day but become even more striking when lit up at night, casting golden reflections across the lake. You’ll also find plenty of cafés, cocktail bars like UME, and even chain options like Highlands Coffee, all nestled along the cobbled lane beside the boats. There’s a real mix of traditional charm and modern comfort. Don’t miss the lantern boat ride if you want a fairytale-like experience after sunset.

This beautiful ancient town is so beautiful at night with the towers and all the streets are lightening up. A lot of shops and restaurants where you can look, buy souvenirs and have meals. We hired a boat and went along the river. That’s wonderful memory.
