Hoàn Kiêm Lake is a beloved and tranquil part of the city to enjoy some peace and quiet not far from the chaos. The city does a great job maintaining the lake and surrounding park, and the day I visited gardeners were busy, tilling the soil and planting hydrangea and other flowering bushes.
Young people love to conduct photo sessions at the park, dressed in traditional garb.
In 1884, when the French colonialists invaded Vietnam, they rebuilt and substantially changed the scenery around the lake, including the Old Quarter. Although the war has ended, Vietnam still keeps the wonders of French architectural works. This place represents a tragic and monumental historical period of the country.
The Turtle Tower in the middle of the lake stands as a testament to the beloved amphibian. Today, there is reportedly still one old turtle living in the lake. It is estimated to have lived for several hundred years. Is this the Hoan Kiem Lake turtle in the legend or just a normal old turtle? This question remains a mystery, and that is also why this lake has a certain attraction to locals and tourists alike. Please, do not consume turtles; instead hold them in esteem as a fellow creature who only wants to live in peace.
